PROJECT OVERVIEW Coral Reefs in the Caribbean, important for many ecological, economical, and cultural uses, have been affected by a number of natural and anthropogenic events, all of which have led to the decline in species diversity and abundance in the area. In 2005, coral reefs throughout the US Virgin Islands were severely compromised by a mass coral bleaching event triggered by prolonged exposure to above normal water temperatures. Researchers are cultivating underwater nurseries to revive bleached and dying reefs. Small fragments of wild staghorn coral are grown atop concrete blocks and later transplanted to damaged reefs. The resulting pockets of genetic diversity can help jump-start regeneration of reefs.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The proposed designed begins with the typology of a public pier. The program is weaved under and over a public path that extends a quarter mile towards the coral reefs. Classrooms, laboratories, and student housing are accessed along the pier. The linearity of the pier allows for minimal obstruction to the underwater ecosystem and maximum sunlight to reach the regenerative coral laboratories. The design emphasizes movement and fluidity with elegant spaces, circulation paths, and facade systems.

PROJECT OVERVIEW The RAND Corporation, currently located in Santa Monica, is an independent, nonprofit research institution. RAND has continued to grow, as the value of “ideas has increased in world culture and the world market. The location for the new RAND headquarters is a vacant site in San Jose, California, predominately zoned for industrial purposes. The site is comprised of two parcels totaling 40 acres which will be used for the one million s.f. RAND Headquarters Campus. The program of the campus consists of research towers, required parking, retail and commerical space, a hotel and a conference center. The challange of the project was masterplan development and designing a model for future educational campuses.

The proposed design serves as a large network for all employees and visitors by using innovative strategies. The surrounding context consists of industrial or corporate offices that lack open green space. This project proposes an urban park extension that will eventually lead to other surrounding sites. With the required program, the proposal consists of two main towers which hold the research spaces for employees. In addition, there is a running track elevated above the site that connects several buildings to one another. The purpose of this track is to provide employees a creative mode of walking transportation throughout the site and promote physical well-being.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Nestled between the RAND corporation headquarters, Santa Monica City Hall, the termination of the 10 freeway and the Pacific Ocean, lies a stretch of land that is proposed as an urban park.

FLUID CONVERGENCE

The intent of the project maintains the proposed open space while infusing the site with a building program and necessary circulation routes. The design integrates landscape and structure while composing parametric programming to elevate textural surface articulation in support or their design criteria. The program is a mid-size, 20,000-s.f. institutional building partially submerged or subterranean which aims to weave itself into the parks open space.

Elements of nature are constantly forced through paths of linearity. However, these elements instintively move in spiraling or curved motions. This project aims to apply this conclusion to people and their relationship to movement and space. Fluid convergence proposes a design that supports curved paths to enhance the experience through a space using the fluidity and opportunities formed by spiraled paths.

PROJECT OVERVIEW The design for the purposed community civic center integrates the required public spaces with a designated hybrid program. The site is located in Venice, California in the middle of a dense, low-rise residential area. The hybrid program is an interactive children’s museum which will programmatically link to the adjacent public library and provide a community-oriented center. The development of the project includes an analysis of schematic designs, organizational concepts, interior spaces, structural systems and circulation strategies. Additionally, there was an exploration of the tectonic nature of the primary structure, skin sub-structure, enclosure, facade strategies, and material studies through large-scale models.

PROGRAMMATIC LINK

DESIGN CONCEPT In the final design, Programmatic Link proposes an innovative bridge that will be used to provide direct access for museum visitors to and from the library. As a community civic center, the design of the hybrid programs serves to close the gap civic employees and community members.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Located in the Hollywood Hills, these two challenging hillside parcels were conventionally unbuildable as a city storm sewer easement traverses the canyon section of the property. With a nod to several dramatic precedents, this proposal literally joins the two properties by bridging them from side to side with an 85 foot Pratt truss. A lap pool with canyon vistas as well as a garden roof terrace take full advantage of the recreational landscape in which the project is sited.

Truss Haus was a collaboration between four designers at Space International. The renderings and concept plans were individually created.

PROJECT OVERVIEW This comprehensive addition & renovation in Beverly Hills to an existing residential property enhances the existing utilitarian floor plan with a clerestory roof accentuating the spacious views to the canyon beyond. Tactical design alterations to the main house are bracketed by the addition of new guest wing and extended wood terrace creating a “courtyard residence made up of multiple functions. The landscape design completes the attention to detail at every scale of the property. This project was a collaboration between three designers at Space International. The renderings and construction documents were created on a team and used for an approved design review submittal.

PROJECT OVERVIEW “It all starts with an Absolut blank page. This is the name of the Absolut Vodka campaign. The campaign is an art collaboration with MADE and is based on the idea of producing a large-scale art installation in public space. The scheme combines an urban largescale advertisement poster with physical art located in Alexanderplatz, the heart of the city of Berlin. Using the Absolut bottle silhouette, over 190 4.5 liter bottles are arranged to emphasize the form. The bottle array has the ability to depict various designs through LED-illuminated bottles of various colors. Once completed, the installation will illuminate for two-weeks then travel to various locations to be displayed including Art Basel Miami.
