ENGAGE My goal through the following proposals is to engage the present and future, by linking it to the past.

George Washington Carver museum and cultural center’s mission is to be a positive force for diversity and inclusion within Arizona and beyond. It is a historical preservation site that is dedicated to the collection, documentation, preservation, study, and dissemination of the history and culture of Africans and Americans of African Descent in Arizona. My hope for this site and the organization, is to create a space of engagement to greater strengthen the community. Engagement is super important to me because when people not only enjoy themselves, but invest or engage themselves into something, it becomes of greater value and meaning to them. While this building and the history within it is already of great value to some, I want to increase the visibility of that value, so that its reach continues to grow and prosper. I believe increasing engagement in these spaces will do just that.

“When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way you will command the attention of the world . - George Washington Carver I propose we increase visitor engagement in the museum through curated storytelling, interactive exhibits, and by inviting visitors to add or contribute to the museum archives. I propose we increase the community and visitor engagement in the library by providing work and study space that is welcoming and comfortable to encourage visitors to stay for longer periods of time. Finally, I propose that by flooding the exterior with pops of color, GWCMCC will attract the public, and increase engagement on site though sport courts, playing fields, picnic areas, parking gardens, and the grandstand.

“When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way you will command the attention of the world . - George Washington Carver

Part of increasing visibility includes creating brand standards that create consistency from things like space all the way to graphics. This is important because it will ensure that Carver starts creating a recognizable, consistent, and marketable identity. I spent the majority of my time documenting the building by documenting paint colors in each of the rooms on the first and second floor. This got me really engaged into the history and character of the building, and I quickly fell in love with it. The colors I chose to create the brand standard came from the paint colors found in caver, linking the new current brand to its long history and creating an engaging color pallet that has endless color combinations to represent the unity though diversity.

THE MUSEUM My goal through all of these proposals is to engage the present and future, by linking it to the past.

How can we re-design these spaces to get the public engaged on site but also engaged in the mission of GWCMCC? Because honoring history is one of the main goals of Carver, the museum is one of the most important spaces to increase engagement. I propose we increase visitor engagement through curated storytelling, interactive exhibits, and by inviting visitors to add or contribute to the museum archives. 1. Elevate the museums presence and impact by Engage history through other’s stories. 2. Create a way of displaying artifacts that allows visitors to physically or digitally add their stories or family’s stories to these artifacts—as many of them currently don’t have clear identifiable or relevant stories. This could include adding images, posting comments, uploading videos, playing audio, or even donating physical artifacts.

THE MUSEUM My goal through all of these proposals is to engage the present and future, by linking it to the past. 3. Adding music, video footage, or projections to the exhibit will capture the attention of visitors in more varying ways that cater to different generations or learning capabilities. 4.Making the museum exhibits interactive could be a really fun opportunity to engage with all age groups and visitors. I propose that some of the museum artifacts like typewriters and similar artifacts are restored to working order and then a type writing station could be created allowing visitors to use these pieces of history in a more intimate way than just viewing them. The same could be done with cameras and film. Visitors could use Polaroid cameras. They could take a picture to take home and picture to leave on a visitor’s photo wall. This is a fun way for them to preserve memories and leaves pieces of themselves at the museum.

GALLERY HALL

FRONT GALLER

5. Creating small souvenirs that can be sold at the entrance/exit gift shop will help visitors keep the memory of their experience, and also could also promote interest and visibility to those who haven’t visited yet.

GEN EALOGY CEN TER

6. Adding a small designated workspace for visitors to do genealogy work will engage visitors for longer and will likely, mean that they visit more than once. Information discovered by visitors during genealogy work could also be of value to the museum and collection.

ONLINE GALLERY For use during visit, after visit or without visiting. The online exhibit has two main objectives. The first is to allow visitors to have more interaction and contribute to the collection, if they have stories, recipes, recordings, etc. to contribute. The second is a result of the first—by collecting information from more people the museum and can start to more efficiently record history and curate its exhibits. Each mobile Gallery or podium will have a posted QR code that will take visitors straight to the online collection that features the items in the mobile case. Visitors can bookmark certain things they wish to revisit later.

THE LIBRARY My goal through all of these proposals is to engage the present and future, by linking it to the past. GWCMCC tells the story of—the African American community, and how they came together back in 1925 to fight for their right to a good education. Once they had this building they began to thrive. Alumni from the school went on to be great contributors to the phoenix area and beyond. The community respected their educations so much that the alumni bought historic sight to ensure it remained. So in addition to telling this story of community education and success in the museum I want the auxiliary spaces to continue to continue writing the story by providing programs to the current community that are educational and will lead to individual’s success and thus a community’s success. With literacy being a focus for GWCMCC, I believe the library could add a lot of value to the site. I propose we increase the community and visitor engagement here by providing work and study space that is welcoming and comfortable to encourage visitors to stay for longer periods of time. Catering this space to all age groups will also increase engagement as this library can become a family outing for the local community. I want the space to be filled with books for educating, but also to be filled with accessible technology, to those who may not have easy access.

EXTERIOR PROGRAM My goal through all of these proposals is to engage the present and future, by linking it to the past. I refer to the back of the property, with the large metal shed, as the depot. I call it the depot since it used to be a bus depot for the school district. I believe that flooding the depot( currently a sea of black asphalt, gray concrete, and beige stucco) with color will instantly bring the depot back to life.

MUSEUM

In tandem with GWCMCC’s focus on health and wellness, I believe engagement will be increased by bringing sports back to the site with sport courts and a field. In addition, creating multiple spaces for groups of people to gather including the courts, picnic areas, parking gardens, and the grandstand will increase activity on the site and bring it to life.

THE DEPOT My goal through all of these proposals is to engage the present and future, by linking it to the past.

All sports courts are regulation size. On site there will be two tennis courts, two volley ball courts, and two basketball courts (inside the metal shed). There will also be a grass field for sports activities and community use. The Grandstand will serve as gathering space for CrossFit groups, an outdoor venue to eat lunch, an amphitheater, and an outdoor theater on the weekends. Inside the grandstand will be a concession stand (only used for special events or rentals) and a recreation equipment rental shop to service the sports courts and community. On occasion there will be a community event called “The food truck roundup. Small restaurants, local vendors, or food trucks can register with GWCMCC to participate. On the day of the event They can pull in and park in the parking gardens where locals can come and eat with friends and family.
