01 the hut a place for women and children Carlton was once and is still known to be a place for women and children. Through the years, changes in melbourne's urban planning resulted in major changes within the Carlton area, compromising places and spaces that was once created for these women and children. Thus, the aim of this project is to create a health care and community centre for women/mothers and children. The name of the project; the hut, which also sounds like the heart; seeks to be a place of comfort and security for mothers and their children, staff and patients from carlton and surrounding communities.
mother & child
protection
growth
bond
the concept begins with a simple diagram; the outer circle representing the mother and the inner circle representing the child, symbolizing a mother's embrace and protection she has for her child.
the circular forms then evolve to a house looking shape. not only was this inspired by iconic toy library within the site, it also represents the place in which we seek comfort and protection from daily; our homes.
as the child grows, he/she starts to develop; in form, features, behaviour, habits, etc.. thus the inner form starting to differ from the outer form; representing a mother's constant guidance for her child's growth.
evenutally, the child finds his/her identity and is ready to be slowly let on his/her own in the world. however, the mother is always there to comfort and protect him/her. thus the bond that still remains, which grows into something unique and beautiful.

03 studio air computation architectural design the aim of this studio is to create an installation; to send an intended message regarding a specific issue, but only through parametric design(concept of L-systems with basic looping); using softwares like rhino and grasshopper. the issue i chose to work with was how there was a lack of work spaces for student in the architecture building in school;that more attention was given to the aesthetics of the building rather than the needs of the students. thus the concept of the project was act as a protest against the school's priority over the welfare of the students, mocking the design of the school; aesthetics over practicality. the design of the parent component is a design of an arm; representing the unity of the students, coming together to protest against the school. the secondary component is a torn; representing the anger and frustration;larger at points with more human contact, vice versa. the colour red was used to portray anger and also it stands out the most.

04 site tectonics landscape architecture this elective's aim was to allow us to have a better understanding of the basics of landscaping and after which create our own design with the basic knowledge of cut and fill, through hand drawing, autocad and basic 3DSmax + vray. the task was to provide and create an access path/ route that connects the client's house to an existing pathway system. the concept of my project was in exploring the idea of transition spaces; something that we tend to forget and neglect, but yet is so important as it helps the human mind and soul adjust gradually and comfortably from one space to another.
05 reuniting the old & new. mixed commercial chinatown was once an area which had a historically concentrated ethnic chinese population. through the years, it began losing its essence due to singapore's evolution, changing to become a better place for both work and and living. as a result, chinatown became segregated not only into modern and traditional architecture, but also users of both the shop house and offices, causing the gap to widen, bereft of transition. in addition, being one of the most popular tourist spots in singapore, the area lacks free sitting areas, where tourists and existing users can sit and enjoy the beauty of chinatown. thus, this project aims to be the missing "puzzle piece" to the site; a mixed commercial project that not only provides a conducive working environment for office users and also a place for tourists and existing users to seek joy. it is also a platform that provides facilities for interaction for the old and new, office users, shop house owners and tourists. the project's exterior is a combination of the old and new through the play of different facades, determining the type of zoning of the project.

multi-residential commonwealth is the first satellite town in singapore where the first set of hdbs were built. through the years, it has retain its historic vibe through its slow paced of living and homely atmosphere. however, the liveliness of the place has been lost through the generations as residences began moving out of their homes, resulting the area to consist of mainly the ageing population. thus, the concept of this project, to revive the family spirit and create a more accessible environment for the people living there as well as those who are currently living there.
strategy: creation of spaces for the community to re-connect the different generations that have been segregated over the years. these communal areas enables interaction amongst the different generations. the allocation of units is such that it aligns with the scheme, where it enables parents to live with their children within the same apartment or independently yet still beside each other, further enhancing the family spirit. this has been implemented as based on observations at the existing apartments, the current size of the units prevents families from living with each other the unit will not have enough space eventually. also, larger units are placed mainly on the upper floor for families who already have relatives living in the current apartments in commonwealth. in addition, based on studies and surveys, majority of the ageing population prefer not to live on higher floors. accessibility is also another driving factor of this project as based on observations, current residences uses the site very often to cut through from their homes to the supermarket and coffee shops. thus, providing sheltered walkways and even spaces for the people to relax.
