Personal Profile for Creative and Professional Practice Skills and Knowledge
Being aware of diverse and global range of design cultures and language is a must, as I do not want to insult or offend potential client or users. Designs which are acceptable in one country might not be acceptable in another due to religious beliefs, sensitive issues etc. When producing a design make sure that you always do research into where the design is going to be and who is going to be using it. Throughout college and university I have a large experience of how much research, analysis and synthesis is important to the design stages through previous projects. This needs to be kept to a high standard so you have all the information which is required for the design and also through analysis you will see where you have gone wrong or what you can change to make the design more suitable. Visualising/Prototyping skills are very important to be able to see the design outcome, what works more effectively and how you can change the design and make it visually appealing. I have worked with many types of media and formats but feel that there is significant room for improvement. Applying this I have noticed which works and what benefits a design in the best way. With future projects I will look back at designs and take the most effective sections and incorporate them into future projects. With interim and summative design presentations I have had some experience, I feel I can show where my first ideas have come from, then through critical judgements this leads me to my final presentations showing how I have changed and produced the design to a higher standard. I have an adequate knowledge of process, component and production technology but it is based on university projects at present and I look forward to adding to this knowledge when I undergo work experience. In relation to digital design work I feel that I lack computer knowledge as I find it quite difficult to get my head around. Even though I have developed my skills to a higher level I still feel that this is a major weakness and this year need to focus on how to develop my skills further as design work, now and in the future, will strongly base itself around digital design.
Project Process For 13 years I have worked for a company where I have needed to take into account the client’s needs, making sure that those needs are met within a certain time frame. The way I speak and behave towards the client in a professional, respectable and sufficient manner has resulted in a relaxed relationship with the client and promoted my professionalism for the company. This approach I want to keep at a high standard as it is extremely important to gain the trust and respect from not only a client but also a colleague. Within work and university I have had experience with working with one person and within a group in a professional manner. .Collaboration is a key tool for bouncing ideas off each other but also this will help achieve the best desired outcome for the project. For 6 years I have been a team leader for up to 25 members of staff, engaging in team management throughout these shifts. It is my responsibility for the shift to run smoothly by assigning team members responsibilities which need to be upheld. I am there to support staff but also to make sure all jobs are completed within a certain time frame. This is important to ensure all members of the team know their roles and know who to come to if any problems arise, so management know exactly what is going on throughout and if a client wants to know what progress is being made they can be fully informed. This leadership I want to continue through group work within projects, to be more aware of the time frames which need to be upheld. As a team leader I have to plan shifts, mostly by what benefits the company but also the staff. I take into account staffs strengths and weaknesses and assign jobs which they can perform to the best of their ability. This will be monitored throughout the shift in case changes need to be made. This is needed to produce the best outcome in the time frame given. Making sure you adhere to time scales and knowing exactly what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and by whom. I intend to improve and apply this to every project for my own self-management but also future projects within a group or future employment. I have a limited range of project types which have been through university. Despite this I understand the importance of innovation for clients, and to keep in touch with the modern times and forward thinking. This year I want to add to my project range and design knowledge through research into these fields. I have no experience of costing or negotiation, though I feel this is important. For
my next designs I am going to look into daily rates for an Interior designer and material costs to see if the final amount would be adequate for the project and the client. I have gained good understanding of design processes and methodologies within the past two years, through initial, developing and refining ideas leading to final designs. I understand the importance they hold to produce a well-executed design. In my next projects I wish to improve and refine these skills to a higher standard.
Enterprise and Marketing I have limited experience of project procurement and client consultation, I only have university project briefs to go by and what the client want through this. I fully understand the importance, not only to explain my ideas but also to fully understand what the client is requesting. From these you can adapt ideas to be more appropriate to the client’s needs and wishes, making them more comfortable with the design. This year I want to gain some experience with clients through work experience. Whilst undertaking the foundation year of my degree, I gained knowledge of different design sectors, including graphic design, product design, fine arts and interior design. I feel all these areas are interlinked within the creative industries. This knowledge is essential for me, giving me a broader base to draw from. My experience of planning continuing professional development started at high school deciding which GCSE’s to take. Followed by attending 6thform College and undertake A Levels. I then decided to gain experience in a work environment to help me decide which path to take, followed by college leading to university. I have a good knowledge and experience of regulations through the company that I work for and university. Such as health and safety responsibilities including risk management. Legislations and regulations are to be complied with and put into place not only for the client’s, designers and contractors safety. Despite this knowledge, I feel I need more experience within this field and to undertake more research into legislations. I have limited experience of design budgets. I have my own experience from moving house and the budget available to design and redecorate. In relation to personal account management, I have had to ensure I have sufficient income in order to meet my day to day outgoings. Budgets are very important when it comes to design, taking into account cost effectiveness. Deciding which materials would be best for the job and the quality of the materials to fit within the budget. Throughout projects, account management is extremely important making sure you have adequate funds to complete the job and you do not run out of money half way through.
This is something I am going to take into my next projects to ensure I can work within a budget as this is highly important when working in the industry. I have no experience of design practice marketing and promotion. This knowledge will be extremely useful to my future career and will be gained as the course progresses and through work experience.
Values and Vision When it comes to ethical practices through business you need to analyse and recognise situations such as Cultures and religion, remembering to be sensitive towards their needs through your thought process. With this you need to look at yourself, other people or companies and how they should behave. Making sure you are punctual, meet agreed targets and provide reasons for your choices and behaviour when it is going to affect other people. Throughout a professional career you will adhere to many policies and standards of ethical design. These are set in place by companies/clients to ensure consistency and professionalism. Within the company I work for I have to set a high standard of professional practice. This is highly important, as the way I behave and act towards clients reflect majorly on the company and the way it will be perceived. Being untidy, rude, unapproachable etc. shows a lack of professionalism. Whereas being on time, polite, presentable, sensitive to people’s needs and going that extra step for a client will hugely benefit you and the company’s vision and image. I am aware that the future of design and trends will change, that many new designs have their origins in the past and with the use of modern technology will have been given a more modernised outcome. For example: mobile phones and the dramatic changes in design in such a short period of time. When designing, remember who you are designing for. For this you need to extensively pay attention to all stages of the design process and remember to test out designs with the user/clients. This will give you an insight to how the client can, want or needs to use the space. You can then adapt it to them rather than designing something which might look good, but realistically will not work in practice. For example designing an interior for people with disabilities you need to make sure that you are asking them what would help then in everyday life. Speak to the carers who work with them on how your designs can be adapted to benefit their needs.
