SPATIAL NARRATIVE

01 MARKER LAYERING “Follow format/demonstration discussed in class to render, on marker paper, an array of squares and spheres with your design markers: rows one and two, 4 - 3”x3” squares, row three, 4 spheres; ½” margins between rows and columns. Render different tone and color combinations and observe how layering marker strokes react to one another. Remember to not cover each square in its entirety with markers but, instead, let the paper breathe and come through at times.”

02 RENDERING A CUBE “Render three cubes and their backgrounds in 2 point perspective. In each pair, delineate the horizon line and vanishing points. Also, compose each pair in different positions above or below the horizon line and to the left or right of center of the picture plane.”

03 RENDERING SIMPLE SPACES 1 “Follow the steps in the posted Drpic resource to construct a variety of small perspective thumbnails. On two sheets of marker paper, render six 1 point perspective studies and six 2 point perspective studies. Shift the horizon line up and down and vanishing points right and left. Studies need to show line weight variety and style as well as marker stroke variety/style/ color/tone. “

04 RENDERING SIMPLE SPACES 2 “Follow the same format and method as Simple Spaces 1 above but this time include additions and subtraction on planes within your perspective studies. Work to achieve accurate perspective forms or voids and overall shadow believability. Also, work toward a harmony between marker stroke and pen lines using various hatch techniques.”

05 PASSAGES “Revisit and delve deeper into your understanding of the interior concept of passage using the sectional doodling method presented in class. First, sketch and render on one sheet of marker paper 12 sectional passage studies. Second, draw and render one larger passage study on a second sheet of marker paper. Carefully consider color harmonies and sensitively address line weights and styles as well as hatch and tone techniques.”

06 DIAGRAMMING: BLACKSBURG STORIES “Using diagrams, tell a story that speaks to an aspect of Blacksburg that characterizes the town’s identity or your experience living here. Stories might include, but are not limited to, places, events, time of day, history, activity, landscape, cityscape, etc. Use maps, images, or other graphics as a layer under your diagramming or referenced in your diagramming. One sheet of Bristol Paper (19”x24”), one story. Carefully and artfully compose your diagramming story using appropriate diagramming language and text/notes/graphics where necessary. Evaluation based on depth of story, effective use of diagramming that story, and overall design composition.”

DISTRICTS OF BLACKSBURG

07 MATERIAL SIMULATIONS 1 “First, practice your material simulations in your sketchbook then use the template provided to you during class to render two sets of simulations: 2 woods, 2 marbles, 1 metal, and 1 glass. Strive for material believability: material depth, detail, color, contrast, etc.”

08 MATERIAL SIMULATIONS 2 “Building upon this week’s sketch assignment, draw and render 5 pieces of furniture on one sheet of marker paper. Refer to pictorial resources from print or from web. Use a variety of line widths, styles, and hatching to build your furniture forms and portray materials in a believable manner.”

09 ROOM VIGNETTE “This assignment has a 2-week duration and requires 2 renders: First, looking at a photograph of interior design, accurately portray the variety of elements you see in perspective, materials, colors, light, and shadow. Second, consider the material/color concept palate that the designer selected then consider your own material/color concept palette to illustrate an alternate scheme.”

Design: Tribeca Apartment by Enze Architects

10 ALTERED STATES “This assignment has a 2-week duration. 1 rendering of an interior or architectural scene from an unfamiliar or unique vantage point. In other words, find an interior or architectural scene that would be exciting for you to draw. Change your position or viewpoint so that when you construct the perspective drawing, the perspective is ‘altered’ or ‘skewed’ compared to normal eye level viewpoints. Consider laying on the floor and looking up or standing on a chair/ladder and looking down. Frame your drawing showing space-shape compositional elements and render the final version with different line weights, hatch, color, material, light and shadow.”

11 SPATIAL NARRATIVES “This rendering assignment explores the mechanics of two point perspective drawing and encourages the explorative process of using perspective drawing methods to define and illustrate an imaginary space that is governed by the principles of perspective and the language of design. You will use drawing as a means to discover the design concept. Through this drawing experience, you will come to a better understanding of perspective mechanics and formulate a distinct design concept. You will improve your drawing technique of line, shade, light, color, material and texture. The final product will be a developed two point perspective rendering that illustrates the overarching concept of ‘interiority’. While you are involved in the drawing process, consider what defines space, the principles underlying spatial organization and hierarchy, and the elements that contribute to building and enriching a spatial experience.”
