DESIGN PORTFOLIO

HELLO! Thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio. A little bit about myself before you dive into my work: I can turn almost any situation into a song, I apply my creative energy to everything I do, and I love a good challenge. I am passionate, honest, and dedicated to work. I love to build with my hands and my dream is to have my own workshop/hobby shed one day. I want to apply my skills in an innovative, collaborative, and inspiring environment that will challenge me to learn and grow.

Although my degree will tell you that I am wishing to pursue a career in interior design or interior architecture, my degree doesn’t tell my whole story. I do truly love interiors, but I believe that I have the skills, motivation, and persistence to successfully work in any design discipline. I am open minded to new and exciting opportunities, and I hope you are too!

FAHRENHEIT Project completion: Fall 2014 Location: City North, Phoenix, AZ 90,000 square feet Collaborative project in collaboration with: Sheelah Noffz, Emily Park, Katheryn Fischer

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A 90,000 square foot tenant improvement in Phoenix, Arizona challenged us to design and space plan a workplace environment that encompassed in-depth workplace research trends. Architectural transformations allow the building to utilize the Phoenix sunlight, and detailed space planning allow for employees to experience the building as a positive and collaborative work environment.

Skills: Full construction document set (will provide upon request), client meeting and communication, research, concept development, design development, schematic design, rebranding, logo design, space planning, blocking diagrams, stacking diagrams, rendered floorplans, research, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, CAD, SketchUp, Podium, hand-sketching, handrendering, team collaboration

RESEARCH AND BRANDING

Extensive technical research was done about work-place trends and employees health and happiness. The research was completed and configured into the info-graphic pictured above to convey the physical, social, mental, and life balance that was considered during the design process. The logo was designed to match the geometrical architectural expression of the workplace.

CONCEPT AND PROCESS

light well and atrium diagram

space planning design around light wells

block diagram emphasize stacking

The concept from this project stemmed from the story of the Phoenix bird: The Phoenix exposes itself to the sun until it dissolves into ashes, only to rise above the ashes feeling rejuvenated. Space planning was designed so that all employee amenities are located on the ground floor. Employees leave the workspace to use the amenities, and return to their workstations by rising up the central circulation feeling mentally rejuvenated and inspired. The structure was influenced by the forms of the wings of the phoenix bird. Light define circulation paths.

STRUCTURAL TRANSFORM TO ENHANCE SUNLIGHT Sunlight is the proven to keep employees happy and motivated. Natural light was emphasized by designing a grand atrium, where light floods the entry. As the building rises, the facade cantilevers in the abstracted form of the bird wing over the street to create spaces on each workplace level where employees can interact with the community and experience full daylight.

Sunlight study of sunlight and structure relationship: sun rises in the east atrium, and the lightwells allow Fahrenheit employees to experience sunlight as an interactive module as it moves throughout the day.

LIGHT DIAGRAMS Diagrams to show the architectural incisions made. Cantilevering and the light-wells are used to maximize daylight. Light-well diagram shows how light from the fourth level is transferred to the entire structure, and how light defines the main circulation paths so that movement throughout the space is encouraged and experienced in memorable ways.

WORKSPACE SPACE PLANNING

Computer generated model built in design development phase to show emphasis on the atrium, natural daylight, and finish selections. Space planning of the work stations are designed around circulation that is defined by lightwells. At the end of all circulation spaces are collaboration stations designed for casual meetings and workspaces.

ATRIUM ENTRANCE AND RECEPTION Entrance of building on ground floor pictured below, where amenities are accessible to public and to employees. Atrium is open to all four levels, with circulation and the act of “rising in the building as the emphasis in the atrium space. The reception of Fahrenheit is pictured above left, and located on the second floor and separated by an architectural library so that visitors do not enter workspaces.

CONSTRUCTION AND MODEL BUILDING A total of three models were made to show spatial relationships, scale, and to emphasize the abstracted shapes of a leaf. -A full model of the entire structure -A study model of atrium circulation -A detail model of the stair offset with glass side rail

CIRCULATION STUDY The stairs in Verde are the central element that acts as the “vein of the leaf by connecting all circulation elements. The stairs are locating in the main atrium, and provide memorable experiences for building users. The stairs wrap around the elevator, forcing those traveling to experience all aspects of the atrium space.

FACADE The facade of the building uses corten steel in an angular and modern language that contrasts with the historic red brick buildings of mill avenue, but compliments the street’s modern day environment.

Skills: KeyShot rendering, SketchUp building, Photoshop, Illustrator, collaboration with architect, collaboration with industrial designer, collaboration with landscape architect

YOUTH PROGRAM Instead of designing withing the boundaries of the given interior, we challenged ourselves by researching ways to empower youth. We designed an after school program, in which students travel with the Build Truck throughout the county and gain essential life-long skills. The program encourages at risk youth to participate in community “building, by allowing youth to work under supervision on fun and challenging hands-on projects.

Skills: UX design, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, extensive research, client consultation, public presentation, mentor communication, hand-sketching, social media, web design, photography

DEFINING DIVERSITY We redefined diversity: Diversity is the varied identities of each individual within a community. Accepting diversity allows people to understand one another and to go beyond tolerating differences, by embracing and celebrating them in a safe, nurturing and positive environment.

diverse identities...

Through extensive research on diversity, we have concluded that the above diverse identities are what create intolerant behaviors. The pyramid of intolerant behaviors is what we designed as a tool to show how bullying is an umbrella for intolerable behaviors. We have redefined bullying as the exposure to repeated derogatory actions toward an individual or group. Current antibullying campaigns target the bully, and provide awareness to the negative impacts of bullying. We wish to do the opposite, and diffuse the issue of bullying through empowering individuals.
