KAVES Condominium Date: Summer 2017 Type: Collaboration Contributors: Amanda Stein, Esmeralda Campos, Khadijah Jhuboo, Sola Da Silva, Valentine Ansari KAVES Condominium makes use of sustainable features and design principles to deliver a design that breaks the pattern of the eastern Toronto Lakeshore area. Maintaining the exterior glazed area to less than 40%, this building greatly enhanced its envelope’s insulation value. This mixed-use project is intimately integrated to the city grid, providing a TTC bus stop right out front, city bicycles for rent, and electric car charging stations available for each underground parking spot. These convenient features, in combination with a premium location by Lake Ontario, make the KAVES Condominium the ultimate Toronto experience. This high-rise building was the result of 5th semester studio.

The Tollkeeper’s Park Date: Fall 2016 Type: Design excercise A space where families can spend time together and teachers can take students to learn about sustainability. A platform for conscious energy use and efficient design. The Tollkeeper's Park is an opportunity for Toronto to showcase sustainable architecture in cold climates. Shares a site with the Tollkeeper’s Cottage, the oldest such structure standing in Canada. The proposed design uses the principles of net-zero energy, stack effect, water-wise systems, underfloor heating and natural light to achieve occupant well-being as well as low-cost maintenance. This design is a product of 3rd semester studio.

Tubular skylight creates stack effect, pushing the hot air out in the summer when skylight is open. Storm water is collected, treated, and stored underground below the frost line before supplied to the building. Gray water is collected, treated, and pumped back to the building for use in the water closet. Underfloor radiator uses electrically heated stormwater. Skylight tilted south, allows for natural lighting and solar heat gain in the winter.
