SITE ANALYSIS Movement This map shows the circulation of pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles through the Concrete Lawn at different times of the day. This helped me further my understanding of the space and how it is navigated. It is primarily a space that is passed through by many and is often congested.

Action I included this action map in my portfolio as it heavily influenced my final project. As was determined by my movement map, the most prominent activity to take place on Concrete Lawn is walking; a place that is often passed through but not as often a place to stop.

SPATIAL COMPOSITION I explored spatial composition by using and pushing the boundaries of two materials: wood and metal wire. Each material has different qualities; the wood is stiff and hard, the wire on the other hand is malleable and can be shaped. I wanted to make the wood appear to be bent and curved, something that was against its nature. I wanted to use the wire as a stiff, strong support that would not move. That is how I arrived at this model after many trials. Plan 1:1 @ A3

LANDFORMING Landforming was about subtraction and extrusion, which is what led to my model.

I

chose

this

material,

reinforcement tape, as the ideas behind landforming reminded me of natural, organic forms and I found this tape to be organic in its movement.

I liked the way the material could not be controlled. It made really interesting layers portraying light and dark in the areas where it would overlap and warp.

ASSEMBLAGE Grafting Grafting is about the conjunction of two distinct characteristics in a way that is stabilised through modification.

Plan 1:1 @ A3

I combined the stiffness of the balsa

wood that was used in my spatial composition model and combined it with the organic reinforcement tape that I used for landforming. I then balanced them by creating different heights, densities, and focus points.

SPATIO-TEMPORAL DEB ATE Mind sharp but blurry, Reality messy but clear, Or is it? Thoughts unleash themselves, They clash, What was first clear now fades away, Fantasy and reality do not agree, they drift apart, Further and further, The will has no effect in the present, We are stuck in the past, The way ahead is blocked. A spark alights. Existence is strong but without purpose.

SUPERIMPOSITION My superimposition collage was made by layering the following: 1. Site ‘Action’ map 2. Assemblage plan 3. Spatio-temporal collage

I created many trials in order to decide on the finished collage; I aimed to create balanced overlapping densities – points of complexity and points of simplicity.

FINAL PROJECT My final project incorporates metal and reinforcement tape. The way that I have used the tape has evolved greatly; at the beginning, its natural movement controlled how I used it. But after carefully considering my feedback, I started to gain more control over the material with every model I built.

1:200 @ A1 I wanted to think how the space could be used more efficiently; instead of merely a place that is passed through it could become a place where you can stop and enjoy.

I used the tape in two different ways in this model. It is used to symbolise water as shown in the image to the right. This showcases its organic side. This water was adapted from the action map, which was one of the overlays on the superimposition collage.

The partial section below shows how the body of water is surrounded by soil, which is done to regulate its temperature and provide a border to the pool. Only this area is filled with soil, there is also space under the platform for the circulation of people.

Full section 1:100 @ A1 I also used the reinforcement tape to create the pavilion’s roof membrane. I purposefully wanted to use a material that resembled netting as it allows for the growth of plants such as a deciduous vine. This would be beneficial in the space as it is leafy through summer thus providing shade from the harsh summer sun, and it loses its leaves in winter, allowing warmth to reach the space. I wanted to allow nature to grow on something that I had forced to become unnatural.
