POROSITY - A CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE -Connecting “House” and Community

0.4 PROJECT ABSTRACT

POROSITY My thesis proposition is an architecture that examines and redefines the orphanage in the context of Saudi Arabia. The fundamental question addresses what makes a house a home, that makes a community a family? While cultural and support systems need to be in place, it is the design strategy of the spatial and functional environment that creates the setting for opportunities to be explored. This project pursues these ideas: 1 - connecting the house scale to the urban scale 2 - redefining the meaning of courtyards 3 - elevating the meaning of “house” 4 - exploring “tera”, the tiers of social spaces and “floating lofts”. The concept of porosity reveals spaces defining degrees of publicness and privacy. The program and its architecture creates a relationship between community and the house of orphans. The social spaces reveals itself when opened out to the community. Otherwise, the privacy of this orphanage remains a “house” for its inhabitants, growing from infant to young adult. The “house” itself is arranged in tiers of hierachial spaces. The infants’ realm is on the lower level or “tera”. As a child grows, their units are located on the floors above till you reach the “floating lofts”. Each inhabitant navigates in this large “house” and ventures out to the community when they are ready.

POROSITY - A CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE -Connecting “House” and Community

1.01 CONCEPT STATEMENT POROSITY This orphanage redefines itself as a “house” and endeavors through the design strategy and program by having social spaces for the community and residential spaces for orphans. The social spaces open out to the public and create an interactive relationship between community and inhabitants who are orphans. The concept of interaction are through layers of porosity deployed by architectural screens on the exterior and tiers of spatial volumes at the interior. The architecture consists of four component parts: 1 - the screen or the rawasheen 2 - “tera”, the first two levels are grounded and constructed of concrete bearing walls. This contains the rooms for the infant orphans and their play spaces. The community program also are a aprt of this realm. These two floors represent the concept for grounding and anchoring. The screens at this level as “porosity” have large doors which open to the public for community events. This is the public frontage and includes the programs of marketplace, gallery, workshops, retail and cafe. Across the street at the park are open stalls to sell the wares and produce created by this orphanage. 3 - social spaces occur at the mid levels of floors three and four. In program, these are the floral and vegetable gardens, the theatre, the computer school and gym. 1- Through intergrating the urban park with the house. 2- The intersecting of programatic spaces. 3- The roof top as a fifth facade. 4- Through method of porosity. The architecure elements can expand by the space needs. The typology of house is re-constructed from the normitive “House” idea is Saudi Arabia. “ A house must be like a small city if it is to be a real house, a city must be like a large house if it is to be a real city” Aldo Van Eyck (4)

RESEARCH STUDIES ORPHANS’ LONELY BEGINNINGS REVEAL HOW PARENTS SHAPE A CHILD’S BRAIN.

NEGLECT

1

More than a decade of research on children raised in institutions shows that “neglect is awful for the brain,” says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. Without someone who is a reliable source of attention, affection and stimulation, he says, “the wiring of the brain goes awry.” The result can be long-term mental and emotional problems. (5)

36

1-problems with brain development. 2-odd behavior. 3- delayed language

Children who get adopted at age 2 are most likely to grow up with typical brains LANGUAGE Language development suffers when a child is isolated from others. This directly affects the ability of the child to communicate in social situations

EMOTIONS Emotional instability is very common among isolated children. A child may be fearful of a situation, whether it is one-onone or among group of people, but this is only one emotion that is close to the surface. Other emotions that occur when an isolated child is around other people include anxiety, stress, and apprehension

ISOLATION

Social interaction provides sensory stimulation, which leads to the creation of short- and long-term memories

SOCIAL CUES Social cues are learned activities, and a child kept in isolation does not learn social cues

BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND LOBES The size of the brain of a child at age 3 from the neglect in comparison with the size of healthy child in a naturing family setting (5)

SELF-IMAGE AND SELF-ESTEEM Interaction with others is imperative to develop a child’s healthy self-image or self-esteem. Isolated children do not feel comfortable around others because they lack the ability to communicate and follow social cues. They may feel they do not look good enough to fit societal norms, thus creating a poor self-image. (5)

RESEARCH STUDIES IZIDOR RUCKLE STORY

I am appalled at the number of children who remain in abusive and inhumane institutions around the world, forgotten and voiceless. I spent the first 11 years of my life in such a place, and can tell you it is a cruel solution for “unwanted” children. Through my own survival, as well as that of my former-orphan friends, I have seen how the stability and love of a family can change a child from hopeless and wild into a healed and a compassionate human being. Many years ago, through God’s intervention, some courageous people spoke up on my behalf, gave me an opportunity outside the walls of my orphanage, and changed my life forever. Now, I am called to be a voice for those left behind (6) 1

The Orphanges are designed istitution- like design. There fore it does not feel as a home .Also, the living space lacks a healthy environment, functionality, natural light, gardens and outdoor spaces In summary: My design intent for this project is to challenge the typology of the current orphange design as well as the typology of the Saudi house design. This create an enviroment which encompasses intergration between spaces with nature and the urban fabric. The concept of interaction and porosity will be explored. 1

RESEARCH STUDIES FAMILY UNITE IN SAUDI ARABIA AND HOUSEING SPACES ANALYSIS

Average Household Size in Saudi Arabia is 5-8 Parents and children. In the Saudi Culture kids live with there parents until they get married. Then they can move out into their own home. In some families, where they own and live in an apartment building or a duplex villa, they live there so the family grows and united togethe. Parents “ grandparents” their kids who have become parents them self and their kids “ grandchildren”. In Conclution, this united family culture requares large houses and more than one living room to fill full their occupints needs and privecy.

2.09 SUSTAINABILITY STRAGERY

In my Design intent, I want to create a public vegetable garden that will bring the orphans and the community together.Further more, the kids can will learn about healthy food and social skills as well through the farmer’s market in that community. This will enrich the porosity concept. The sustainability of this approch is to use gray water to water the gardens.
