Dean’s Letter
March 14, 2017 Greetings from the Downtown Campus! People ask me “What is continuing education?” Well, I think of it like this: work and fun. From fall through spring, most of our focus is on the work side, with the fun side in the planning stages, and then summer brings FUN!
On the work side, this fall and winter we saw an increase in contracts from local businesses and municipalities for Microsoft Excel training, classes in leadership, supervision, management, customer service, and project management. We’re thrilled that businesses are investing to improve productivity and retention, so if you’re interested in customized training classes give Leslie Shelton a call at (806) 371-2904 or lgshelton@actx.edu. We’d love to show you how to train your employees for free, compliments of the Texas Workforce Commission. The fun side, classes in community enrichment and Kids’ College, happens all year round too, but it really takes off with the summer camps when school lets out. Our staff has worked hard to craft a dynamic range of fun and educational week-long camps that will engage your school-age children to explore and participate in a wide variety of activities. Everyone’s talking about science and technology, so starting on page 20, you’ll find an entire section of camps related to the S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concept for grades 6-9 that will inspire and stimulate the curiosity and imagination of middle-schoolers. Subject areas include robotics, genetics, anatomy, programming, physics, and more. We’ve made sure that learning can be fun with these hands-on camps. For the younger set you’ll find a summer’s worth of delightful morning and afternoon camps at Ascension Academy. All day, half day, your way…whatever your family needs to keep young hands and minds busy. Please join us this summer and have some FUN! We’ve worked hard all winter to make sure you can have FUN this summer! Warm regards, Toni Gray Dean, Continuing Education

Clogging is a percussive dance like tap dancing which originated in the Appalachian Mountains. Although Bluegrass or old time fiddle music is the traditional music that cloggers dance to, today we clog to many styles of music like pop, country, and even rap. Some of you may have seen clogging groups on America's Got Talent TV show or You Tube. It does take some time to get the hang of it, but once you learn to clog, it's a lot of fun and very good exercise.
