Holiday traditions make the season bright By LAUREN EBBEN Ranger Reporter
As the winter season rolls in, the time comes to get together with families and reflect on the past year before preparing for the next one. It’s a time rooted in warmth and tradition. “One of my favorite Christmas traditions is when my family and I play the domino game Chickenfoot after we have finished our meal,” Michelle Wittler, a biology pre-med major, said. “It’s like monopoly to us.” “We normally put up the tree as a family and then, a week or two before Christmas, we all go to the Hallmark store and pick out Christmas ornaments for the year together,” Juliana Sandridge, a nursing major, said about her STEVI BRESHEARS | The Ranger own family traditions. The Amarillo College Presidential Scholars will be spending part of the winter vacation in the Dominican Republic. Twelve AC students and their sponsors will be collaborating with Outreach 360, an international volunteer program that connects groups to service opportunities abroad. The Scholars will be serving the children of an elementary school in the town of Monte Cristi. They will spend four days with the children, coordinating activities for them, such as games, sports and crafts and teaching them English. “We learn cultural lessons from traveling, but what really sticks with the students is interacting with the locals,” said Lesley Ingham, honors program co-coordinator and speech instructor. “I think it will be a culture shock but I will step back and take time to appreciate the little things and give back. I am looking forward to working with the kids,” Olivia Moctezuma, a psychology major and Scholar, said. The Scholars are a group of AC students who have been selected to become a part of

Servers are people, too Like many college students I start out my weekend by getting ready for work. I get paid to be nice to people and hand out food, you guessed it, I’m a server. Sounds easy right? Wrong. So here’s a little insight into the life of an every day server and what you should or shouldn’t do when you encounter us beasts in our natural habitat. First of all, let me speak. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone over to greet a party and the first words out of people’s mouth is “water.” Immediately that tells me that they don’t care about me at all. At least let me get my name out. If something is wrong, tell me ASAP. I will fix it then and there. Tip your servers. An average server makes $2.13 an hour plus tips… without people tipping them, there is no way they can make money. This doesn’t mean you have to leave a ton of cash each time, just don’t leave them nothing. This is how people make a living, including mothers, fathers and college students. “Server” is not a synonym for “slave.” I’m overjoyed that
JOSH BALLARD Ranger Reporter
you’ve graced me with your presence... for about three hours. Eat, talk and then leave after you’re done. I’ve had my first party I serve be my last party to leave. This is not OK. Like I said before, this is how people make a living. When you decide to stay for a really long time, you are essentially taking a table away from that server. Just remember this holiday season when you go out to eat, the mother who serves you is trying to buy Christmas gifts for her children; the student who serves you is saving up for next semester; the young man is struggling to pay his rent.Never forget that a server is just as much a person as you are.

Grab a spare can of cranberry sauce and strap in; it’s about to get crazy out there. You’ve been bombarded all year with requests to help the needy, but during this holiday season, you’re going to encounter so many more organizations and events that are attempting to guilt you into blessing others with your hard-earned abundance. We, the Ranger staff, are taking a stand against yearround giving. We feel that you shouldn’t have to worry about blessing your fellow man during the rest of the year because that’s precisely why our world created this “season of joy and cheer” between Thanksgiving and Christmas. First of all, meeting a person’s basic needs so that they have an opportunity to improve their future is a load of hooey. It’s not your responsibility 11 months out of the year to help people realize their full potential. If your neighbor wants to eat, get her kids to school, or find himself a better job, you shouldn’t need to do anything than encourage them to
pull themselves up by their bootstraps. You got yourself through hard times alone, why should they be treated any differently? With that said, we feel it’s important to help out the less fortunate during the holiday season because they may need support in purchasing game stations and foot spas for their friends and family. Next, we feel that being consistently charitable throughout the year makes your holiday gifts seem less valuable. Think of it this way: if you’ve been supportive of a less fortunate individual January through October, then these freeloading scuzzbuckets are going to feel entitled to even better blessings at Christmas time. It’s time to stop sending people into the last part of the year with the expectation that they will get assistance with food and housing. They should struggle like the rest of us so that they are pleasantly surprised in the event that they are selected for a holiday miracle.
Lastly, when you bless people around you during the rest of the year, you make them feel like they should be loved during the holiday season. People aren’t that important. Sure, they might help you out when you hit dire straights, but realistically, you’re only going to have issues from overspending on Black Friday and after Christmas you’ll be back on track. All this year-round charity simply elevates people’s selfesteem and makes them feel worthy of love. It’s total crap. Other than boosting performance at work and creating positive social experiences, how have selfworth and a positive self-image ever put food on the table? So go ahead, tithe a little extra, buy gifts for a kid on an angel tree, say hello to friends you know and everyone you meet, but for heaven’s sake, please do humanity a favor and, by December 26, take down your lights, cancel that auto-drafted donation, and flip your neighbor the partridge in a pear tree.

The time is here for holiday cheer. Thanksgiving Day officially kicked off the holiday season with X-mas trailing right behind it, which means consumerism will be at an alltime high. Do we really need all this nonsense in order to have a valid X-mas day? Soon, mothers will be driving in their oversized SUVs to purchase last-minute gifts. I can almost guarantee I will be cut off by one of these SUVs pulling out of a WalMart parking lot, spreading frustration along with holiday joy. or celebrated X-mas in years. You should see the looks I get when people find this out. I’m all for the family gatherings though. That is the one thing I do take away from the season. Sadly, I believe a lot of us have gotten away from the truer meaning and are simply trying to outdo each other with bogus gifts. I recall being sad many times growing up, because kids would show up at school with their new presents. Now, I understand you can’t buy happiness. So, I’m going to teach my son to enjoy his quality time with his family during the holidays and instead of buying useless junk, I’m going to put my money toward his future or invest in a personal experience, such as a family vacation. Fall graduates set to walk the stage Nursing Shannon Knebusch fall 2017 commencement speaker
By MACKENZIE FARMER and CARTER HALL Ranger Reporters For many students, the end of the fall semester means a break from school, but for some, it means their time at Amarillo College is coming to an end. “I have had wonderful professors that I have learned so much from,” Chelsea Rhodes, a graduating psychology major, said. “I feel that I have enough information to go forward and pursue my dream career.” Fall 2017 graduates will walk the stage Friday, Dec. 15 and from there will begin a new chapter, whether it’s entering the workforce or continuing on and furthering their education. “After graduation, I am going to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then obtain my masters in clinical psychology,” said Rhodes. “I plan to become a licensed therapist and have my own practice. I later want to pursue my doctoral degree in cognitive behavioral therapy and extend my practice to help those with autism.”

Students say commencement is an event they look forward to because it shows the success they have achieved through those long days of coffeefueled studying and late-night Whataburger runs. My Nguyen is a graduating biology major. She said she owes her success to hard work and the many resources available at AC. “They are there to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help because the professors want to help,” Nguyen said. “In order to be successful
in college you have to put in effort,” Rhodes said. “Every assignment requires diligence and hard work in order to complete it.” As graduation draws closer, the commencement committee has been busy planning. “We have a committee of faculty and staff. We meet and divide up the duties into smaller subcommittees. Each subcommittee is responsible for various items in relation to the ceremony,” Diane Brice, registrar and director of enrollment services, said.
At the ceremony, musical performances will be provided by AC professors Mary Jane Johnson, an opera singer, and Diego Caetano, a pianist. “I am really excited about the piano, it is going to be very cool,” Lesley Ingham, a commencement committee member, said. Another addition this year will be large TV screens outside the coliseum so people who arrive late will still be able to see the ceremony, which will also be livestreamed online. AC officials select a graduating student to speak at each commencement ceremony. Shannon Knebusch, this fall semester’s chosen speaker, will earn an associate degree in general studies. She plans to go on to earn a second associate degree in nursing and then transfer to Texas Tech to complete a nursing bachelor’s degree. Knebusch is a mother of five who lost her 16-year-old daughter to cancer in 2012. She and her husband founded a local pediatric cancer charity, the MTK Foundation, named in honor of her daughter, Madison Taylor Knebusch.
AEL department wins second place By KEEGAN RIED Ranger Reporter
The Amarillo College Adult Education and Literacy department (AEL) is receiving statewide recognition. AC’s AEL department recently won second place for the College Integration award and received a check worth $30,000 from the Texas Workfore Commission. The College Integration award is presented to organizations that exemplify excellence in providing services to high school equivalency (HSE), English as a second language (ESL) and college transitions students. “I am so very proud of the work of the AEL team,” Edie Carter, dean of academic success, said. Carter noted that when it comes to integrating HSE and ESL students with the rest of the college student body, AC is the exception rather than the rule. “Traditionally, adult education has been viewed as a separate program. Amarillo College’s leaders have worked hard to integrate AEL students,” said Alicia Panelli, AEL data

analyst. “This integration allows us to encourage and support the students as they move beyond their GED to receive a certificate or college degree.” Getting a GED is an integral step in obtaining a higher education, but Carter said these students face many other challenges. “Breaking down barriers for HSE, ESL and transitions students has led
individuals toward a brighter tomorrow, which, in turn, strengthens our community,” Carter said. AC’s programs have been so successful that the institution is now helping other colleges by providing guidance and mentoring. “AC faculty and staff are developing a national reputation for educating and supporting our students and
ensuring they are able to achieve a college certificate or degree no matter what level they start in their education journey,” Dr. Russell LoweryHart, AC president, said. “If our community is going to diversify its economy and grow our economic opportunities, we have to educate every student in our community - including those who need GED and ESL services.”

program receives honor By BRETT HERRING Ranger Reporter
As the director of Amarillo College’s associate degree nursing program prepares to retire, the program will be honored by the Texas Board of Nursing. AC’s nursing department has received several commendations over the years, but this is the third time in a row it will be recognized by the state board. The benchmark for registered nurse licensure pass rates is 80 percent or above each year and AC’s licensure pass rates have been over 90 percent. “Around 70% of RN’s in the area are Amarillo College graduates. They start out with a dream of being a nurse, of bettering the lives of their families and those that they care for as a Nurse,” Lyndi Shadbolt, the director of the ADN program, said. Shadbolt noted that her students receive hands-on training and preparation to enter the workforce. AC’s nursing department has been ranked 10th largest associate degree nursing program in Texas according to the Texas Board of Nursing’s report. While in the program, students have the privilege of getting help to guide them along the way as they become professionals. Community colleges have the unique opportunity of truly contributing to the community with the school’s program graduates. “I’m heading into my last semester of this degree, and it’s been an honor to learn from such an amazing group of people and be able to be a part of this outstanding program,” Megan Smith, a nursing major said. “The feeling of knowing I was enrolled in one of the best programs in Texas is the topping of the cake.” “As I retire next semester, I know that this great legacy of nursing education at Amarillo College will continue. We provide a strong foundational education that serves our graduates and our community,” Shadbolt, the director of the ADN program, said. The recognition the nursing program received from the Texas Board of Nursing is something to be proud of, Shadbolt said. The announcement will be made at the Texas Board of Nursing meeting in Austin this January.

There’s nothing quite like a little holiday competition to get everyone excited this time of year. The AC faculty and staff have come together to decorate doors and trees not only to win prizes, but to spread joy and cheer throughout the campus. The department doors and trees will be judged and the champions will win great prizes such as a highly-coveted trophy and breakfast with the college president.

Relax, end of semester is here SGA offers distractions to keep finals anxiety to a minimum

Music, free food and free games--that is what the Student Government Association of Amarillo College is offering at the end-of-the-year party Dec. 8. The party will take place at Mr. Gatti’s from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and it is exclusively for AC students. Since the event is a lock-in, a student ID is required to attend and students who leave the party will not be allowed to come back in. SGA officials said they are hoping that students
will attend and get involved with their student body representatives. “We hope this event will get all of the students motivated and it just kind of keeps them involved with what’s going on at their college, just kind of something fun for somebody to look forward to,” Genie Barcroft, SGA publicity chair, said. SGA also held campus spa day Dec. 4 and 5 on the West and Washington Street Campuses. The event was held to help students relax on the week before finals. Professionals gave free massages, foot rubs and paraffin treatments.

No justice in this league BY DRAKE HUTTON Ranger Reporter
CORTESSY PHOTO
“Justice League” premiered Nov. 17 and since the film’s release it has done no justice whatsoever. Lacking a strong storyline, with terrible CGI, the film is another disappointment to the DC Fans. The film starts out as Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) go out and seek to form a team of people with extraordinary capabilities. This group includes The Flash, Aquaman, Superman and Cyborg. They hope to be able to take on Steppenwolf and his henchmen. Zack Snyder, the director of the film, created a weak storyline with an even worse
Dive into dystopian novel that defies expectations BY JOSH BALLARD Ranger Reporter
The young adult novel “Divergent” by Veronica Roth is an action-filled read that not only provides entertainment, but also presents real world issues in society. Roth spins the world of “Divergent” in an interesting tale told by Beatrice Prior, a sixteen-year-old who lives in post-apocalyptic Chicago. Beatrice lives in a divided world where everyone is put
into factions that represent their personality. Beatrice is born into Abnegation, the selfless and lives alongside four other factions: Amity, the peaceful; Candor, the honest; Dauntless, the brave; and Erudite, the intellectuals. Roth fills “Divergent” with action, mystery and romance fairly well. If you’ve ever read “The Hunger Games,” it’s similar. Although it isn’t the most spectacular thing I’ve read, you’ve got to give it props.
It quickly goes from “Oh this is probably another high school angst novel” to “Viva la révolution.” The trilogy gets better as the books progress. One thing I recommend about this series is that if you start it, finish it. Roth could have improved “Divergent” by avoiding the romance cliché of many similar novels, however the twists and cliffhangers throughout the book are truly great and offer enough reasons to give it a read.
take him in and name him Buddy, where he is raised by Papa elf (Bob Newhart). After realizing how different he is from the other elves, he eventually learns the truth of what he is and sets out to find his real father, Walter Hobbs ( James Caan). Upon learning that his father is on the naughty list, Buddy will do everything in his power to bring Christmas spirit to not only his father but to the rest of New York City. The film also has an appearance by Zooey Deschanel, who plays Jovie as Buddy’s love interest. We get to hear her beautiful singing voice in a moment she shares with Buddy singing “Baby It’s C o l d Outside.”
“The Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage, as Miles Finch, also makes an appearance as a children’s book author who is no elf by any means. The movie portrays Ferrell as clueless and often dumbfounded, which can be frustrating but comes with laughs not only for adults but for children as well. Throughout the movie, memorable quotes help establish Buddy as a pure-hearted person who sees good in everything. The film was released Nov. 7, 2003, and came in at No. 2 during its release week. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie grossed $173 million worldwide. This is one holiday film that will keep the audiences laughing. It has become a holiday classic over time and is a must-watch for the whole family. The movie is rated PG and is available on Amazon Video.
villain. The plot lacks the character development that you’d want to see and it is predictable from the start. The CGI is cheap and awful. I’m not sure, with a budget of just $250 million, what kind of CGI you can get, but apparently, it’s not good enough. Often in the film, there are frame lapses and it is noticeable. Superman’s face appears really distorted and apparently it is because the actor wanted to sport a mustache, so they just used CGI over it. Superman should have stayed deceased. One of great plot twists in the film is the reviving of Superman, as the league is incapable of taking on Steppenwolf without him. It shows the league’s inferiority to Superman and that
he will come to rescue them when times are tough. Overall, his character hurts the development of the others. In light of the success of “Wonder Women,” many fans had higher hopes that the new Justice League movie would prove that DC has finally turned their franchise around, especially since the failure of “Batman versus Superman.” However, even with all the hype, we are disappointed once again. Will DC ever create a good movie? If they can’t, then it would at least be great if Christopher Nolan just did another Batman franchise. Overall, this movie proves to be a disappointment. For now, there’s no justice in this league.

Spy sequel has A movie yule definitely love humor, intrigue BY DONOVAN ORTIZ Ranger Reporter
“Elf ” is a movie yule want to watch during the holidays. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film gives an excellent example of how good old holiday cheer turns the meanest people into believers of Christmas spirit. This colorful and happy film is nothing without the comedic genius of Will Ferrell, who plays an overgrown elf. Ferrell, who has appeared on “Saturday Night Live,” gives the viewers a taste of his art in this holiday film. We see Ferrell in a green suit with yellow tights that clearly make him a standout with his group of elves and fellow humans as he prances around. The story begins when a baby at an orphanage stows away into Santa’s bag and eventually ends up at the North Pole. The elves

Matthew Vaughn creates a hell of a sequel to “Kingsman: The Secret Service” with “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”-- an action packed spy adventure that sprinkles humor in all the right places. Imagine a James Bond movie with hints of Austin Powers. The action scenes are exquisitely filmed and the movie is fast-paced, but just fast enough that it doesn’t leave you with the feeling of “What just happened?” all while making you laugh hysterically. “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” presents another villain, Poppy Adams, an international drug lord of the largest drug cartel obsessed with the 50s. This time instead of wanting to kill billions of people like the last Kingsman villain, Poppy just wants to hold millions hostage and
it’s once again up to the Kingsman to stop her. Overall, this movie is a blast to watch. It takes the saving the world scenario and sprinkles humor throughout the film. From the serious spy shenanigans to Elton John doing a flying side kick, this movie leaves watchers with a good feeling of money well spent. Matthew Vaughn has managed to create a sequel that meets the standards of the first movie. Now I eagerly await to see what he comes up with in the third and final installment in this spy fiasco that is the “Kingsman.”

College is expensive and with all money going to tuition, gas and bills there is not much left over for presents. That’s why many students are turning to Do-It-Yourself gifts. DIY gifts can be tailored to the person receiving them and can give you the sense of satisfaction that you made a gift with your hard-working hands. Also, you can avoid those crazy soccer moms buying their daughter-in-law six Keurigs. Some people prefer getting DIY gifts over store-bought ones. “My sister draws me a card every year. She gets a box and fills it with treats and her drawings it means a lot to me. I love my sister,” Valentine Chase, a nursing major, said. A good DIY option is making a scrapbook. Choose photos that capture the good times you’ve gone through and add some stickers or concert tickets or other mementos. “I like DIY gifts because they come from the heart and mean more to you,” Chase said.
Gifts for co-workers
A personalized coffee mug from zazzle.com. Candles or a fragrance plug from Bath and Body Works. Gift cards for restaurants or a Visa gift card they can use anywhere they want. A DIY or purchased gift basket from websites like ediblearrangements.com. A mini desk zen garden from amazon.com.
Gifts for pets
A cat scratcher lounge infused with catnip from amazon.com. A hand-held dog treat launcher from Kohls. Cat Catch interactive LED light pointer from amazon.com. KONG slow feeder puzzle dog bowl from places like Petsmart or Petco. A doggie water fountain from amazon.com.
Gabriel Garcia, a nursing major, receives a yearly gift from his aunt. “My aunt fills up a jar with candy and after I eat all the candy in the jar there is a $100 bill. I love DIYs because they save money for us struggling college students,” Garcia said. Filling a decorated box or container with the recipient’s favorite snacks or treats is a good way to guarantee that what they get will be used and appreciated. Another gift for people who love to cook or bake are Mason jar recipes. These jars are an entire recipe measured and placed into an aesthetically pleasing Mason jar, minus the perishable items like eggs and milk. “The best DIY gift I have ever gotten could not be returned because it was some good old home cooked food,” Haley Harris, a nursing major, said. “Living off microwavable pizzas is fine, but nothing beats homemade food.” Remember, DIY gifts may not be appropriate for everyone. “DIY gifts can be overrated at times and overdone,” Harris said. “There are gifts in the stores and ways to go about a gift that won’t break your bank account.”
