parenting tips... How To Build A Good Relationship With Your Child’s Elementary Teacher You can stay up all night baking birthday cupcakes for your child’s class and help him with his presentations, but nothing is as important as building a good working relationship with his teacher. “It’s the best gift you can give your child,” says Doctor of Education Trudy Carpenter, director of special services for Ledyard public schools in Connecticut. Your child will thrive in school if you can create a “circle of support” that includes the three of you (your child, his teacher, and you), says Carpenter. The more freely information flows back and forth between home and school, the better your child will feel about learning. The circle of support needs to be especially strong when your child first begins school, but it will remain important throughout his school years. Here are some ways to build and sustain good communication with your child’s teacher: Get to know the teacher right away. It’s best to talk to the teacher before a problem surfaces. Although some teachers might want to wait until the first school-scheduled conference to meet, try to arrange at least a quick conversation at the beginning of the year. Make it casual; briefly introduce yourself and your child to the teacher and mention any special concerns. Let your child see you speak with his teacher, or tell him that you did. Children feel safe when the important adults in their lives

work together. Keep in regular touch. Use your first meeting to create a plan for staying in regular contact throughout the year. Perhaps you can pass notes back and forth in a spiral notebook or blank journal each week; a brief comment or two will suffice. If you choose a system such as this, involve your child. Let him pick his favorite notebook, and give him the responsibility of carrying it between you and his teacher. If you’d rather chat than write, ask his teacher when you might call or meet with her briefly, either before or after school. Say thank you. Pass along compliments as well as suggestions and criticism. Everyone appreciates a kind word. If your child comes home bubbling over with how much fun school was that day, let the teacher know. Thank her when she shows special sensitivity toward your child or pays him extra attention. Stay involved with the class. Even if you work full time, you can still help. A small gesture goes a long way to show you care. You could collect art supplies for a class project and drop them off at school. You could also call parents about upcoming events. Your child’s teacher will appreciate your help and make note of your willingness to be involved.

“Happy Rooms For Happy Kids!” Artist Info: Lesley Ingham ~ I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty!

Talk about school at home. Ask your child about school every day. Questions such as “How was school?” are too vague. Try to ask specific questions, such as “Did you start on your rain-forest project today?” or “Were you able to go outside at recess or was it too rainy?” Children are more likely to answer these questions and you can use this information when talking with the teacher. Be discreet but take action if problems arise. If you are angry with the teacher, take steps to address your feelings with her as soon as possible. Don’t criticize her in front of your child. He’s attached to both of you and if feels he’s in the middle of your dispute, it could make him anxious. Respect the chain of command. If you have a serious concern about your child or the class, speak to the teacher first. Arrange a problem-solving or brainstorm-

ing meeting in which you and the teacher try to work out the issues. If you’re still unhappy, let the teacher know that you want to continue the discussion with her supervisor (if the teacher is the director of the school, you may have to consider changing schools). By including the teacher in future discussions, you’re being respectful of her relationship with your child. Remember what PARENT stands for: Partner. Be there for your child and his teacher. Help your child prepare for school at home, and keep abreast of school events. Advocate. Work for change in the classroom, school, and district. Attend school board and PTA meetings. Lobby to make a difference. Resource. Help your child by providing his teacher with information about him. The more she knows about your child’s home life, the more she’ll be able to help him learn. Encourager. Support your child and his teacher. Believe in them. Compliment jobs well done. Negotiator. Be willing to talk. Be open to finding innovative solutions. Team member. Do your share of the work. Teachers can’t fix everything themselves. A child’s education takes place at home, too.

feature article... The MAAC Attack... By Cherisa Felder The MAAC (Martial Arts and Athletic Center) is the only mixed martial arts program in Texas that is also a licensed Child Care Facility. The MAAC offers an after school program that introduces Martial Art Education. After School pick-up is a nice alternative to your kids riding the bus home. This is something that the MAAC offers with their after school program. Martial Art Education offers many different disciplines for your child such as: Exercise, Self Defense, Self Control, Motivation, Life and Social Skills, and Foremost.... RESPECT. “Every Child at some point should experience Martial Arts” says Eric Braly. Eric has been under Master Lister for 20 years now. Master Lister knows and works with Area School Principals and encourages his kids to do well and excel in school. Behaviorally as well as educationally. He keeps a close watch on all of the children’s progress and attitude throughout the school year. Lister has been working in the school system for over 19 years now. He

teaches a Tae Kwon Do course as a P.E. credit at Amarillo High School every year. “The soul is healed by dealing with children” Lister says. The MAAC excepts CCS and most of the children they have come from single parent homes. Master Lister and his staff are excellent adult role models to have in your child’s life. They instill “old fashioned” values and teach discipline and self control. Just 60 minutes a day of Martial Arts training will make a big difference in their lives. Training children in Martial Arts also helps to keep them from getting into trouble at school. They learn to direct their energy in a positive direction. Not only does the MAAC offer this excellent after school program but they also have a Youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class at 4:30pm Monday through Friday. During the Summer they have Samurai Summer Camp. This time is dedicated and devoted to FUN! They go on a weekly field trips, Swimming, Palo Duro Canyon, Mini Golf. This past summer Master Lister took some of his older students that were well behaved and did well in school to Schlitterbahn for a week! So when you consider what to do with your child after school, don’t forget the MAAC and their amazing staff. Your child will feel like they have a second home there. 3820 Line Avenue Amarillo, TX 79106. 806 322-1080. Email: master@mail2blackbelt.com or rrknow@live.com

kidsfest 2009...

entertainment... Annual Tri-State Fair Set To Begin! The 86th edition of the Texas Ford Dealers Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is just around the corner and that means just one thing. It is time for a Parade! “Back to the Good Ol’ Days – 40’s and 50’s” will be the theme for the 2009 event which will take place Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 10:00 am. “The Parade is a spectacular way to get everyone excited about the Texas Ford Dealers Tri-State Fair & Rodeo. It is an event that is looked forward to by the participants as well as the spectators year after year,” said Angela Ragland, Marketing Director for the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo. “This year the prize money for the three floats best representing the theme has been increased to $400.00 for first place, $300.00 for second place and $200.00 for third place,” according to Walt Kelley, Parade Chairman. “The parade committee hopes that the increased prize money will encourage more organizations or businesses to enter a float in the parade.” Parade awards will be passed out Saturday, September 19 at 5:00 pm on the Coca-Cola Family Stage at the TriState Fairgrounds. The parade will begin at 10am leading off at 11th Avenue and Polk Street and disperse in the north parking lot on 3rd Avenue between Buchanan and Johnson streets. KVII will continue the tradition of televising the parade live on Channel 7.

The Texas Ford Dealers Tri-State Fair & Rodeo is set for Sept. 18-26, 2009. The Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is Amarillo’s largest annual event attracting over 150,000 visitors from all over the nation. The Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is one of many events that are held by the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition. “We are really trying to enhance the image of the fairgrounds, we have added a new administrative office, renovated facilities and bid farewell to some of the older historic buildings,” said Virgil Bartlett, General Manager, “We have modernized many of the facilities located on the fairgrounds.” The Tri-State Fair and Rodeo is celebrating 86 years of history. The first event held was in September 1923, when local ranchers congregated for cattle shows and rodeos. Since 1923, the Tri-State Fairgrounds has added several facilities, including the Amarillo National Center. “We are really excited about the 2009 fair season. We have rides for every age on the Xcel Energy Midway, several new exhibits and a list of top notch food vendors that will allow you to indulge upon your fair food cravings,” said Angela Ragland, Marketing Director. Daily entertainment on the Coca-Cola Stage will be Paul Isaac “Funny Juggler,” Jeff Martin “The Blond Curly Haired Magician” and Jerry Harris “Master Hypnotist.” For more information on the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo, visit www.tristatefair.com or contact the administrative office at (806) 376-7767.
