Tips for Spending Quality Time with Your Family Looking for some quality family bonding time? Family movie nights are the perfect solution for some serious family fun. Never had one? Well they are a little more structured than heading down to your local video store, sitting the kids in front of the television and popping in a DVD. The whole point here is to get the family together for a truly special night for the entire family. Why It’s Important: Today’s world is busy and everyone in your household has a hectic schedule. A pre-planned movie night can give your family something to look forward to at the end of a long week as well as being a great excuse to spend some well needed time together. Taking time to have a regular family movie night with your children, even if it is only once a month, can help you create fun memories you’re your kids. Think about it... you’re not only spending fun, quality time with them, but you are also creating a bonding and learning experience for everyone in the house. Make it a tradition that your kids will remember long into adulthood.

“Week of the Young Child” Sponsored by Panhandle Association for the Education of Young Children

Saturday, April 10, 2010 2:00-5:00pm Zoo-ba-lee at the Amarillo City Zoo East Parking Lot. We will provide a number of activities and information for children and families in the following areas:

Imaginative Play, Community Information, Gross Motor activities, Creative Art, Science, Story telling, Fine Motor, and Block Play Contact: Tommye Lou Jones ESC16 School Readiness 1601 S. Cleveland Amarillo, TX. 79102-4221 (806) 677-5365 • Fax (806) 677-5309 tommyelou.jones@esc16.net

Getting Started: Whatever movie you choose, make it an event in your household. Planning your movie night ahead of time can make a huge difference in how successful your movie night ends up. Try picking a night a week in advance and get everyone involved in the planning. Yup that’s right! Make sure that your kids contribute to planning the big night… It will make them feel even more excited to dim the lights. Picking The Movie: Picking the right movie for your entire family can be a the biggest challenge for the event. If you have young children and toddlers then your movie choices are going to be very different then if you have teens. If there is a wide range of ages in the household it can be a little more difficult to pick out a film for everyone but don’t worry there are tons of films out there. Of course only you can decide what is appropriate for your family given what ages your children are. Consider A Theme: Every once in a while consider creating a theme for your movie night... You can picks snacks and food that matches the theme of the movie! Food Ideas: Family movie food and snacks are a must have for your night in. Make sure that dinner is light and easy so everyone has room for some snacks when it’s time to put the movie in. If mom is not in the mood to cook… take-out is always an excellent option. Prior to pressing play prepare all of the food for your big night and get everything set up in the living room. Try getting the kids involved in every aspect including: picking the food, preparing and setting the food stations up. Set The Scene: Get everyone to pitch in and turn your living room into a dim room with plenty of comfy cushions on the floor. Throw in a couple of blankets and pillows and you are ready to go. Schedule An Intermission: It can be a long night and some little guys have little bladders! Half way through make sure you hit the pause button and give everyone a chance to fill up their glasses and take a potty break. Serving Amarillo Since 1999

“Happy Rooms For Happy Kids!” Artist Info: Lesley Ingham ~ I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty!

Kidz Krafts Easter Bunny Difficulty: Easy • Age: 3 and up

This cute Easter bunny craft is easy to make. Use a foam ball and cotton balls for a fun bunny craft the kids will think is adorable. What you'll need: Cotton balls White chenille stem (pipe cleaner) Wiggle eyes Thin wire Cardboard Glue

Foam (polystyrene) egg Thicker pink chenille stem (pipe cleaner) Small pink pom-pom Wire cutters Scissors Fabric or lace

How to make it: Glue cotton balls on a foam egg for tail and feet. Bend white pipe cleaner around a thicker pink pipe cleaner for the ears. Stick a pair at the top of the egg. Add wiggle eyes, a small pink pom-pom nose and thin wire whiskers. Place on a cardboard circle with hole cut out for base of egg to rest in. The cardboard can be covered with fabric or lace. Tips: Tacky Glue is better for crafts than hot glue, which kids can easily get hurt using; it's thicker and tackier than white craft glue and dries quickly.
