DIGEST
Who we are... We are moms, dads and grandparents just like you. We have the same concerns for our children’s health, safety and education that you do. We created the Kidz Digest because there was nothing like it in Amarillo. We as parents and grandparents are always looking to improve and enrich our children’s lives and we assumed that many of our readers would feel the same way. Our mission is to make a meaningful contribution to our community. The Kidz Digest targets parents, grandparents and children themselves with a concentration on education, health, positive activities and community information. Besides providing a much needed service, we feel blessed to have happy, healthy children so we would like to give back by helping children in need in our area. So 10% of the proceeds of the Kidz Digest go to The Panhandle Assessment Center. The Panhandle Assessment Center is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency shelter and foster placement for abused or abandoned children in Child Protective Services (CPS) custody.
The Kidz Digest is distributed in American Classifieds once a month throughout Amarillo, Canyon, Bushland and Boys Ranch. We also distribute to the medical center, mall area and our advertisers locations. We also have a fun, interactive website at www.amarillokidz.com, (that is under construction right not) that you can view the entire magazine and find useful tools, information, entertainment and other fun stuff for your children. We hope you grow to love and use this magazine as much as we do! We would like to thank you for your support and our advertisers for their contribution.
Sincerely, Debby, Cristi, Ryan, Jennelle, Tammy, Becky, Jimmy, Teri, Leslie, Cherisa, Candy and all of our little rug rats!

feature article... A Mother’s “Vision”... by Lesley Ingham Company Overview: The focus of my business is decorating baby and childrens’ rooms, with a specialty in artistic murals. My slogan is “Snazzy Pizazzy: Happy Rooms for Happy Kids!” Mission: My Story I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty! With my son, (a shocking but joyous 18 months later,) I was inspired by the natural, light-heartedness of the
“Classic Winnie-thePooh” theme. I painted a “Hundred Acre Wood” mural in Kahlon’s room in hopes that his room would be as special and delightful as he would be! It turns out that both of my children were a few weeks premature and spent 10 days in the BSA NICU, where they had a chance to develop stronger lungs. The ten days seemed like an eternity at the time, but my husband and I both felt very fortunate to just have a 10-day experience there, unlike many of our baby’s neighbors, some of whom were spending months there. Because of their first few days in this world, I am dedicated to donating a portion of each product that I sell to the Neo Natal Intensive Care Units of Baptist St. Anthony and Northwest Texas Heathcare Systems in Amarillo, Texas. Presently, Alli and Kahlon are rambunctious and freespirited toddlers who both spend many hours a day playing in their butterfly and Winnie-the-Pooh rooms with smiles on their faces. My kids make me smile, and their bedrooms make them smile. Art has the power to soothe, inspire, and make children feel special! From the inspiration of my children and my love of out grew “Snazzy Pizzazzy”. I would love to give you the experience that I was forturnate enough to have, by creating a magical, personalized haven ready for my new arrival. When it comes to what I do, my motto is: “If it’s a surface, I can paint it!”

Vaccines are offered all year round at D&S pharmacy but School Registration time is usually the busiest time. This year is expected to be the busiest yet. Entering 7th Graders in the AISD will be required to have 3 New immunizations this year. (2) Varicella, TDAP, and Meningococcal. The Varicella vaccine (chickenpox) not only protects vaccinated persons, it also reduces the risk for exposure in the community for persons unable to be vaccinate because of illness or other conditions. While no vaccine is 100% effective in preventing disease, the chickenpox vaccine is very effective: about 8 to 9 out of every 10 people who are vaccinated are completely protected from chickenpox. In addition, the vaccine almost always prevents against severe disease. If a vaccinated person does get chickenpox, it is usually a very mild case lasting only a few days and involving fewer skin lesions, mild or no fever, and few other symptoms. The TDAP (Tetanus Diphtheria Acellular Pertussis). What is Pertussis? Pertussis is something we know as Whooping Cough. It is a highly contagious bacterial disease that can be fatal. You may have though of whooping cough a thing of the past, but this isn’t the case. In fact, in 2006 over 15,000 cases of Pertussis were reported in the United States. The last 2 years this number has continued to increase. When a person first contracts this disease, symptoms can be very mild and may resemble the common cold. Most people don’t even know they have Pertussis and it usually goes on undiagnosed. While many childhood diseases have been nearly eliminated by vaccinations, Pertussis is still a major problem. In recent years, the disease has made a Significant comeback since the early 1980’s.

The third vaccination that will be required this year for 7th graders is the Meningococcal (Meningitis Vaccine) The Old Saying “Know your Enemy definitely applies to this disease. Vaccinations are recommended for College students and adolescents. Although Meningitis can strike at any age, teens and college students are at highest risk. This disease is often mistaken as the flu. Meningitis is relatively rare but the consequences can be severe. If you are a parent of a teenager, you probably have talked with your child about dangers that they can avoid, such as smoking, drinking and drugs. When it comes to Meningitis protecting your child also protects your family and your community.

feature article... 2 Sisters Confections and Crafts By Cherisa Felder “2 Sisters, 1 Dream..... 2 Passions, 1 Team”. Heidi Ochs and Holly Robinett wanted to start a business doing something that they could do “Twogether”. Heidi’s passion for cooking and Holly’s amazing talent for sewing, sparked a creativity in this duo to make their dreams a reality. The 2 sisters have 8 children between the 2 of them, each having 4 of their own. Spare time is scarce but they make it. Holly designs a fine line of handcrafted baby gifts that are absolutely adorable. “Woobies” and “Burpies” can be personalized and are sure to become a keepsake for that special baby in your life. The Embroidered “Burpies” are made of 100% cotton, Chinese prefold cloth diapers. What’s a “Woobie” you ask? It is 2 Sisters’ version of the beloved security blanket. 10 designs to choose from and each “Woobie” is handcrafted from the finest Minky fabric. All “Woobies” can be machine washed and dried. You are sure to fall in love with these little guys. Their secret recipe “Spoon” Fudge is rich, creamy and decadent. Fresh quality ingredients and lots of love are put into every little tin. They offer 82 flavors right now, but Heidi is still finding time to create new recipes and add to the list.
Special Holiday flavors include.... Amaretto Almond Apple Pie - Milk Chocolate Orange - Cherry Almond Peppermint Brownie - Pumpkin - Pumpkin Cheesecake Cranberry Orange - and Gingerbread. Heidi has a special talent to capture these flavors, some of them being a flavor I personally wouldn’t think to have as a fudge flavor but I am sure their unique taste is Scrumptious. Some of their best sellers include..... Banana Pudding - Blueberry Cheesecake - Milk Chocolate Pecan - Peanut Butter - Pralines and Cream Chocolate Covered Strawberry - Cinnamon Sticky Bun Dark Chocolate Brownie and Key Lime. Also offered are fudge tarts, fudge bars and fudge “Stuffed” cookies that are delicious!! If you have an upcoming Wedding, Bridal Shower, Baby Shower or any other special occasion, “Spoon” Fudge Favors are the perfect way to say Thank You. 2 Sisters will be more than happy to offer you a personal consult and they can match your colors, and themes. Add a label to your favor for that special touch that makes it completely unique for your special occasion. 2 Sisters is a charitable organization. They are proud to serve as a benefactor for the High Plains Children’s Home. 2 Sisters will be providing every child a tin of Gourmet “Spoon” fudge when they arrive at HPCH. “Our way of giving back” says Heidi. $1 of every 8 oz. tin of fudge they sell will be donated to benefit those precious children who deserve and need so much. You can find 2 Sisters Confections and Crafts located at 6010 SW 34th Avenue, Suite E, behind Kaleidoscoops at 34th and Bell. 806.46.SWEET

PANHANDLE ASSESSMENT CENTER The Panhandle Assessment Center opened it’s doors in Amarillo, Texas in March of 1990 and was the first and only facility of it’s kind in Amarillo and the Panhandle. The Panhandle Assessment Center (PAC) is an emergency shelter and child placing agency for neglected and abused children who have been placed into foster care. PAC operates 24 hours 7 days a week providing care for abandoned, homeless and abused children. During 2005, Panhandle Assessment Center provided services to more than 300 young victims and their families in crisis situations throughout Amarillo, Lubbock and the surrounding communities of the Panhandle and South Plains. These children had been referred by law enforcement or Children’s Protective Services and other various government agencies all working together to comprehensively aid the abused child to prevent trauma and revictimization by the system.
