7 Real-Mom New Year’s Resolutions
Here are our favorite sweet, funny, and totally doable resolutions any parent can make. We love the clean slate of a brand-new year. Whatever parenting blunders you made over the last 12 months (from getting lazy about veggies to BlackBerry-ing through family dinners) -- that was then, and this is now. Make a promise to be a more patient, present, and imaginative parent. What could be more important, after all? We asked real moms for their resolutions. Make these totally doable changes today -- and keep them up all year long.
reason, maybe it will stick more since they are not barraged by “don’ts” constantly. -- Laura Put a Cap on Your Work Day I try never to check e-mail after 6 p.m. -- even though it never stops coming in. I let the day’s tasks, hassles, and responsibilities slowly melt off me as I become present for my daughter. The computer got my attention all day, now
Don’t Say “Don’t” I want to reduce how often I use the word “don’t.” That means I’ll say, “Pease be kind to your brother” instead of “Don’t talk to him that way.” I think it’s better for our relationship for me not to always be the source of negative reminders. When I do say “don’t” for an important

it’s my daughter’s turn. -- Jaine Make One Dinner I’d like to be better about letting the kids have what we’re having for dinner (even though we eat it after they’re in bed). If we’re having French lentils with carrots, they can, too -- no real reason why I can’t prepare and assemble that in kidsize bites and portions, too. Sometimes I use

the justification that I just want them to eat, no arguments. But then sometimes they don’t eat the peas and pizza anyway! May as well be trying for something a little more adventurous and expanding their palates. -- Melisa Make Exercise More Than a Game One son is a jock but the other is not. I want to make sure he doesn’t learn to dislike physical activity just because he’s not the pitcher on the Little League team. I want to try to find more ways to sneak non competitionrelated exercise into my days with the boys -- more bike rides, more walking scavenger hunts, more silly relay races, more dance contests. -- Katherine Go Domestic My resolution is to create a clean home environment for them -- to be a cleaning lady, stay on top of laundry and all household chores. I want the baby to have an area to crawl around in without clutter, my 4-year-old to be able to play

Healthy Snacks...
• Baked chips. Deep-fried potato chips typically get more than half of their calories from fat. Stock up on baked chips instead. Baked tortilla chips are another good choice; you can find flavorful brands that get only a third of their calories from fat. • Granola bars. A great alternative to a gooey candy bar, a sweet, crunchy granola bar has fiber and far less fat. • Fruit bars. Fig Newtons are low in fat and provide fiber and potassium. Raisin biscuits are another great choice. • Frozen fruit bars. The best of these frozen treats contain chunks of real fruit — orange, pineapple, peach, and banana, to name a few. • Frozen grapes. If your child resists eating fruit, try keeping a bowl of rinsed grapes in the freezer. (Remember to cut them in quarters for a young child.) They’re rich in antioxidants — and freezing seems to transform them into bonbons in the eyes of kids. • Fruit juice. Make sure it’s 100 percent fruit, with no added sugar, and you’ll give your child the goodness of fruit in a tall, refreshing glass. • Energy drinks. On a hot day when your kid just won’t slow down, a sports drink like Gatorade can stave off dehydration. • Fruit shakes. Whip together a banana, a splash of fruit juice, and a handful of berries in your blender, and you’ve got a nutritious shake. You can add yogurt for more protein and calcium.

Winter Crafts... Let-It-Snow T-Shirt
Making this one-of-a-kind tee involves some waiting time, so it’s a perfect craft for sleepovers, winter break or a snow day! Materials Permanent marker Paper Cardboard White cotton shirt Tacky glue Sponge brush (or a new kitchen sponge) Fabric paint
amarilloclimbing.com

500 S. Fannin • Amarillo, Texas Instructions Use a permanent marker to draw a thick-lined snowflake template on the paper, or download ours here. Place the template over the cardboard and slip both inside the shirt, centering them behind the upper front of the garment. You should be able to see the template through the shirt. Using a thin line of tacky glue (about 1/4-inch wide), trace the snowflake design onto the shirt. Let it dry for 10 minutes, then fill in any gaps with additional glue. Let the glue dry completely, until it is transparent (approximately 3 hours). Dip the sponge brush in the paint and dab around the snowflake, completely covering the surrounding area. Use less paint toward the outer edge of the design. Let the paint dry overnight. Soak the tee in warm water for about 10 minutes or until the glue softens. Peel off the glue and let the shirt dry, then follow the package instructions to set the fabric paint.

Great Indoor Games...
Marshmallow Tinkertoys A bag of marshmallows and some thin pretzel sticks are all you need to build the perfect puff y pal, a 3-D house, or tepee. Your child simply skewers the marshmallows with the sticks to create his own masterpiece. Add to the fun by placing toy pigs or other animals in the house and challenging your child to be the big bad wolf and blow it down. Family-Photo Bingo Improve your child’s memory and help him learn who’s who in your family tree with this photo game. Take nine family photos and arrange them into rows of three, then give your child nine playing cards or checkers pieces to serve as bingo chips. When someone calls out “Daddy” or “Grandma,” your toddler covers the photo with the card. Whoever gets three in a row wins. Create an In-Home Theater Set up chairs or pillows in the living room, turn out the lights, grab popcorn and beverages, and put on a classic like Lady and the Tramp or Cinderella.

(For an ancient look, let some coffee soak into the map to brown it with age; while the paper is wet, rip it around the edges). You can even hide the map somewhere in the house and let the kids find it while making the bed or putting away toys.
Pretend to Go Camping Build a tent in your living room out of blankets and chairs. Don’t forget to bring the flashlights, snacks, and books. Or make it an igloo and pretend to hunt for polar bears and go ice fishing. Create a Dress-Up Box On a rainy day, weed out unwanted dresses, hats, shoes, and costume jewelry from your closets. After your kids have picked out all the items they want for their costume box, take the rejects to a thrift shop.
