Autism Awareness... April Is National Autism Awareness Month
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? Autism is a neurological disorder which disrupts normal child development in the first few years of life. Symptoms are typically present by the age of three, although sometimes these will be very subtle and diagnosis may not occur till some years later. Autism is characterized by differences and delays in: Communication– both verbal (understanding and 3806 S. Bowie Amarillo, TX 79110

They might be able to recite whole scripts from videos but be unable to have a two-way conversation. Social Interaction– relating to other people and sharing emotions. Young children with autism don’t share their experiences with you: they don’t tell you “Look at me, Mom” like typical kids. They usually play alone even when other children are around and Infant andofToddler oftenExpanding appear to Our lack awareness others. Program Routines and repetitive (or stereotyped) behaviors – such as repeating words (echolalia) or body movements (hand flapping, toe walking). Kids with autism often having a liking for sameness and will rigidly follow routines. They may play in an unusual way (lining toy cars up in a perfect line rather than playing imaginatively with them). Older children may talk obsessively about one topic. Children with autism usually don’t look physically different from other children and there is not a laboratory test to tell if they have autism; it is diagnosed only by observing behavior. In recent times we’ve also recognized that people with autism often display an under-or oversensitivity to sensory stimuli – for example, they may block their ears at the sound of the vacuum cleaner and refuse to wear certain clothes, but then, paradoxically, not seem to notice pain –but

these sensitivities are not part of the diagnostic criteria for ASD. Autism Facts: • The current estimates are that 1 in every 110 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. • Statistics indicate that the prevalence rate of Autism is increasing 10-17% annually. • There is not an established explanation for this increase, although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered. • Studies also suggest that boys are more likely than girls to develop Autism and receive the diagnosis three to four times more frequently. In the United States alone, one out of 70 boys is diagnosed with Autism. • The cause is unknown. The majority of cases are idiopathic. • A small number of cases can be linked to genetic disorders, as well as environmental agents such as infections or chemicals during pregnancy. (http://www. autismspeaks.org) Amarillo Area Autism in Action as a part of Helping Hands was founded in May of 2010 to promote parent support, advocacy, community education, and awareness to foster a sense of belonging for families who feel isolated and improve the lives of those affected by Autism.
