Hi Moms, Dads & Kidz! My name is Benny the Bee!
I started my new job at The Kidz Digest this month. I was selected as the “official spokesbee” for The Kidz Digest. Why was I selected you ask? Well besides being extremely cute, thank you very much, I’m a hardworker! Bees are social bugs that are very organized and follow a strict set of guidelines to get our jobs done. We may be small, but we are very important to big people like you. Because we help “pollinate” flowers & plants to make them grow and produce honey and beeswax. That makes me very qualified to help you Kidz learn to be hardworkers, follow the rules and realize that even though you are small...you are important! We will have lots of fun together learning and growing. You will see me throughout The Kidz Digest to help you learn new things, teach you fun games, learn to be safe and watch for dangerous situations and I’m here to create a little Kidz Community where you can show your funny pictures, share your drawings, tell stories or ask for advice. Parents are encouraged to join in the fun and send in your Kidz cute pictures, drawings, funny things they say or do, or exemplary behavior or achievements. We will also have parenting tips and articles from experts in their field on how to enrich your children’s lives. I would also like to get your opinions on child related businesses and services to see if they deserve my “seal of approval”. Send me your suggestions on how we can make The Kidz Digest something both you and your children can enjoy!
You can mail whatever you like to: 1610 S. Washington Amarillo, Texas 79102 or you can email me at: benny@amarillokidz.com
See you in the next issue!
:)Benny

DENTIST
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, so we wanted to see what a local dentist had to say about his job as a dentist. Dr. Shane Moore, with Amarillo Pediatric Denistry says as for schooling he has taken to become a dentist, “My name is Dr. Shane Moore D.D.S. I graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with my Doctorate in Dental Surgery. I completed my Pediatric Specialist Residency at the University of Tennessee Dental School and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.” When is comes to the goals the dentists at the Amarillo Pediatric Dentistry feel are important to be a good dentist and make their patients, parents and staff happy...they want to represent themselves, family, and staff with integrity and an openly Christian faith. Provide very high quality dental care for children and adolescents. Provide an environment where Dr.’s staff, and parents are inspired and encouraged. Continually strive for good communication with patients and parents, and staff. Offer the latest in innovation and technology. Treat each patient and parent with a legitimate concern and interest. Give a significant amount of time, money and education back to the community. Prioritize care for any child in pain that needs my ser-
vice. Offer honest and friendly service with integrity. Treat each child as a close friend. Personally, Dr. Moore says, “I have three children, Preston, Emily and John. I like to coach my son’s basketball team and participate in the children’s puppet ministry at my church. My wife Nicole and I are excited and proud to be apart of this wonderful community. My favorite color is green. If I were a cartoon character I would be Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb because he always has a plan.”

Artist Info: Lesley Ingham ~ I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty!

My Life With Seizures by Landri Thompson
Hi, my name is Landri. I am thirteen years old, and I live in Texas. Currently I am going through a battery of test because I have unexplained seizures. The summer of 2008 I started having these episodes where my heart would race. They would last anywhere from two to five minutes. This left me tired and a little scared. My family and I just thought that I was nervous about the upcoming school year. I would be going to middle school, in a different building, and lots of changes. Even though school had started I kept having these episodes. In January, we saw our family doctor. He though maybe it was an arrhythmia. An arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat, so he put me on some vitamins. We then started seeing his Physician’s Assistant. During a later visit he witnessed one of these episodes. After that, he ordered a twenty-four hour EKG (a test that records your heart rate for twentyfour hours). The results came back normal. With these results he set up an appointment with a Pediatric Cardiologist. A cardiologist is a doctor specializing in the heart. One day I came home from school complaining about some pain in my chest. We all thought I was too tired. I began getting very pale and the pains started going into my left arm, neck and back. These are sometimes symptoms of a heart attack. We called

the doctor, and he said to go straight to the emergency room. At the ER, one doctor noticed that my eyes were dilated. These two symptoms together can be a sign of drug use. Of course, that was not true. Another ER doctor thought that my heart was weak, and that I needed to start running two or three miles a day. We though that was ridiculous. We went home after six hours disappointed. In the early summer of 2009, we went down for the cardiologist appointment. We learned that I didn’t have an arrhythmia, but my heart did race at times for no apparent reason, but still no diagnosis. The
w w w. A m a r i l l o K i d z . c o m cardiologist prescribed a heart medication, but there was no improvement. My episodes continued. We began looking up my symptoms online. That is how we came upon the idea that these episodes could be seizures. My doctor said that could be a possibility. We did lots of research over the summer. In August, school started. I went the first week, and the episodes got worse. That weekend my legs started to twitch. By Monday I was having full body convulsions. Convulsions are very scary. Convulsions are when your body takes over and the muscles jerk and twitch uncontrollably. Some people pass out, but I don’t. However, I must be in a safe place, so I cannot go to school. A teacher comes to me. Guess what...I miss school! That Wednesday we went to the emergency room because I was have one convulsion an hour. They ran more test, but we would have to wait awhile for results. Before this had happened my doctor had scheduled an appointment with a Pediatric Neurologist (a neurologist is a doctor specializing in the brain). The appointment however was four months away on December 1st. In the meantime, I got a prescriptions for an anti-seizure medication. I worked, I was feeling so much better. December 1st arrived and the doctor wants more test. On December twenty-first I will be going into the hospital for a twenty-four hour EEG. This will measure my brain waves while I am having these seizures, but I have to be completely off my medication. Even though I have had such a hard time these past two years I am okay. Yes, it is scary at first, but I know that by having all these test and things we are getting closer to a diagnosis. It is hard to be away from school and my friends, but I have had to come to terms with it. We are hoping that I can go back at the beginning of the second semester. In a way this has been good for me. I feel that I have become more mature, and view on life has changed. Now I am grateful that we are able to go to these doctors. I also find comfort in knowing there are other children and young adults going through this. Even if you have been diagnosed, or if you are like me and it just seems they will never find what is

So just remember that, it is okay to be afraid. It is scary, but when you find out what is wrong then everything will be worth it. I hope that if you have seizures or even if you don’t , that after you read this that you will feel more secure. By secure I mean that you can tell yourself, “I am going to be okay” and don’t worry, your family won’t let anything happen to you. Even if you have to have surgery, or something else if seriously wrong, just remember you are not the only one. Exactly sixty-eight percent of people with seizure disorders never discover the cause. I hope that you learned something new, or feel better about what is happening in your life. I hope that by sharing my experience with seizures, others will learn something new and feel better about what is happening in their lives or someone they know.
February is National Heart Health Month! Thank you for sharing your story Landri! It sounds like you have a big strong heart to me...
:) Benny
