a poem... By Cherisa Felder Waking up to pop-tart kisses Time to start the day. Seize this rare opportunity Embrace all that is today. Take advantage of every kiss And every chance to cuddle. Take time to dance in the rain And splash in every puddle. Build a fort under the table Or an office under the sink. Make believe in fairies And pretend to all have wings.

Forget about the dishes And the laundry in your room. Sacrifice your weekly shows And let them pick cartoons. Splash with them at bath time And get a tad bit wet. Read them bedtime stories But don’t retire just yet. Now go into their room tonight And watch them while they sleep. This is what life’s all about And you’ve got front row seats.

feature article... Redheads...Mutants or a Special Breed? By Cherisa Felder Being a red head myself, with two little red-headed ruggrats, led me through a fascinating internet maze with a bundle of very interesting facts on the distinct differences between red-headed people and those with other hair coloring. Redheads are considered mutants...or at least have a mutated gene. In the late 1990’s, scientists discovered that red hair is the result of a mutation of the Melanocortin - 1 receptor (MC1R) gene. As research progressed, they found that MC1R mutations affected the perception of pain and the effectiveness of certain drugs meant to block or numb the sensation of pain. The only problem with this study is that some redheads were more sensitive to pain while others had a higher tolerance. A new study headed by Dr. Daniel Sissler of the University of Louisville suggests people with naturally red hair need about 20 percent more anesthesia than patients with other hair colors. “Anesthesiologist have long grumbled that redheads can be a little harder to put under, but no one had ever studied if that was real or folklore.” Said Dr. Andrea Kurz of Washington
University in St. Louis, who praised the research. You might be asking yourself, “Why would hair color have anything to do with it?” The theory hinges on melanin, which is a pigment that is responsible for skin and hair color. Neither of my parents have red hair, but both of my sons do. The gene is recessive and may skip generations but in order to produce redhead offspring both parents must be carriers of the gene. The US can surely boast, anywhere from 2-6% of the population has red tresses. A seemingly obsolete figure, but with a massive population, that give the United State the largest number of redheads in the world with 6-18 million. Compare that to 650,000 in Scotland and 420,000 in Ireland. Throughout History redheads have been feared and revered, hated and adored, degraded and exalted. How is it that hair-color could evoke such a variety of emotions? The color red itself that conjures up a variety of emotions such passion to rage. Studies show that the color red can actually have a physical effect, by increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure. There are several different terms when referring to different shades of redheadedness, including - Ginger, Aubern, and Strawberry Blonde. Through our Genetic quirks, redheads have inspired research that may one day lead to safer medicine. We may not fight crime but I like to think that in this small way, redheads are using their mutant powers for good.

Some interesting FACTS about Redheads. 1. Redheads feel the cold 10 degrees lower then others 2. Redheads bleed more profusely then other people when cut. 3. Redheads are more prone to fainting spells. 4. Natural Redheads have the red coloration in all their hair, facial and body hair. 5. Redheads are 3 times more sensitive than others to the effect of drugs. 6. Redheadedness has been linked to skin cancer. 7. Redheads are found almost exclusively in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand 8. Bees are thought to sting redheads more often. 9. It’s harder to find a vein on redheads to draw blood or insert an IV 10. Adults have about 120,000 hairs on their head. Redheads have fewer, blondes more and brunettes most. 11. Redheads have higher IQ’s than ANYONE! Ok Ok that’s not a fact, Just checking to see if you were still paying attention. 12. Redheads Make up only 1% of the World’s Population. (We literally are one in a million!) *Please note these are just interesting & fun tidbits found on the internet and not to be taken to be an indication of problematic health issues associated with people who have red hair.

local event... Herp Herp Hooray!
Grand Opening of the Amarillo Zoo Herpetarium Join us for the much anticipated grand opening of the Amarillo Zoo Herpetarium. After almost 2 years of planning and construction the Zoo’s Herpetarium will open its doors for visitors on Saturday, October 24th. The Herpetarium will house 26 exhibits featuring over 35 live snakes, turtles, lizards and frogs from throughout the world. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10:00 am at the entrance to the herpetarium. That will be followed by grand opening activities including temporary snake tattoos, a kids’ craft tent, and even a chance to touch a live snake! “The Amarillo Zoo herpetarium gives families a unique opportunity to see scaly and slimy creatures more closely than ever before—and that kind of interaction makes a lasting impression on Zoo visitors”, said Rhonda Votino, Zoo Curator.
“The Amarillo Zoo is truly a gem in our community,” Larry Offerdahl, Director of Parks and Recreation said. “Our Zoo has the unique ability to create lasting memories while also inspiring young people to care about animals and the world in which we live. It is my pleasure to support the learning, fun and excitement that the zoo brings to the people who visit.”
Future projects include a new education center that will provide both on and off-site educational programs, camps, overnights and more to area children. In addition to formal class programs the educational center will also house exhibits on wildlife and conservation. Saturday also marks the day that the Amarillo Zoo will begin charging admission. The new fees will help the zoo continue its growth and improvement by adding new exhibits and visitor amenities. Founded in 1955, the Amarillo Zoo is an exciting family destination that provides a unique educational and conservation resource that serves over 200,000 guests annually. Set in a 15-acre beautifully landscaped site inside Thompson Park, the Zoo is home to more than 95 species of exotic and native animals. The Amarillo Zoo is located at NE 24 th Ave. and Dumas Highway in Thompson Park. The Zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Day). Admission is $3 for adults (ages 13-61), $2 for seniors (ages 62 and up), $1 for children (ages 3-12) and free for children under 3.
