It’s Showtime... Alpha and Omega

www.AmarilloKidz.com

Starts: Sept. 17th • Rated: PG Two mismatched wolves embark on a cross-country quest to get back home and restore peace in their pack after being relocated thousands of miles away by well-meaning park rangers. Quick-witted Humphrey (voice of Justin Long) likes to frolic with friends and play video games with squirrels; disciplined Kate (voice of Hayden Panettiere) likes to call the shots and hunt caribou. Normally, an omega wolf like Humphrey would never stand a chance with an alpha wolf like Kate, but when they’re both transported halfway across the country they must work together to get back to their natural habitat. And it won’t be easy either, because the one thing Humphrey and Kate can agree on is that they don’t have anything in common. Perhaps by working together toward a common goal, however, the two contentious traveling companions will finally realize that even lone wolves can use a helping paw every once in a while.

AMoment with Marissa Moss: T

Children’s Book Author and Illustrator hrough her stories and vibrant illust illustrations, rations, rations, best-selling author Marissa Moss has introduced children of all ages to the art of “journaling.” With over forty books published in the form a t of a personal diary, Marissa is most known for her children’s series, Amelia’s Notebook. The notebooks, created in a signature black and white composition design, are chronicled through the eyes of a young girl who loves drawing, storytelling, and having a little sibling rivalry with her pesky older sister, Cleo. Each notebook shows a glance into the golden moments of girlhood; secrets and note-passing included. Marissa’s other fiction memoirs include Amelia’s Notebook, the middle school series, Max Disaster, and diaries based on historical eras and events including Galen: My Life in Imperial Rome and Hannah’s Journal: The Story of an Immigrant Girl. Since early childhood, Marissa Moss wanted to become an illustrator and author. “As a kid, I drew constantly and was a voracious reader. And I was a storyteller,” says Marissa who took her first art class at the age of five. Born 1959 in Pennsylvania and raised in California, the young artist began her career as an illustrator when she didn’t

believe her stories would sell, “I majored in art until I realized that the trend (then) was to do abstract art and there was no place for the narrative images I wanted to do. Then I spent a year at the California College of Arts and Crafts, trying to learn how to put together a portfolio and make it as a children’s books illustrator.”

As a Berkeley graduate, Marissa sent out her stories and drawings to editors. After five years, she accumulated a whole shoe box full of rejection letters, but her determination and persistent creativity and wit pulled her through to the publishing world. Amelia’s Notebook was formed when Marissa was picking out school supplies for her son. The notepads motivated her to write memories from her childhood in Amelia’s Notebook. Part memoir, part fiction, the Amelia series is full to the brim with colorful depictions of people and places. And whether it’s through art, a journal, or simply a good children’s book, Marissa Moss’s stories can inspire all readers to look back on their childhood. The Kidz Digest was able to have an interview with the bestselling children’s book author, Marissa Moss. Visit her website (www.marissamoss.com) for more information.

Q: How important is it for this generation to read? A: I think it’s crucial for every generation to read!

How else do you explore other worlds, other experiences, other personalities beyond what you see in your own life? Books are like doors into other universes. I can’t imagine life without them because then our experiences would be so narrow.

Q: Do you have advice for our young readers, writers, and artists? A: I think everyone has great stories to tell. You just have to

give yourself permission to tell them. You can’t listen to criticism when you’re creating, you need to just create.

Q: Is there any morals/themes that you hope your books will share with children? A: Each book has a message, but the main message throughout the notebooks is that anyone can keep a journal like this. Everyone has an interesting story to tell. Kids think their lives are boring, but Amelia’s life is totally ordinary. It’s her funny, idiosyncratic perspective that makes it interesting. It’s all in HOW you tell the story. --Rachel Currie

According to an A.C Neilson Study, the average amount of time that parents spend in meaningful conversation with their children is 3.5 minutes per day. Chelsea was born in an unfortunate situation. For the first six weeks of life she struggled to survive. Due to severe neglect, Chelsea was denied basic human needs such as food and a clean environment. One of the most important basic needs she was denied was love and attention. Chelsea was rescued by a loving adoptive couple. Her new parents kept her clean, fed, and entertained. Eventually her body healed from malnutrition and broken skin from diaper rash. However, she never fully healed from the lack of emotional attachment that was missing in her first six weeks of life.

Building Relationships

Bonding and love is one of the most important pieces to a healthy well adjusted individual. While Chelsea enjoyed a comfortable home, her parents noticed something was wrong. She threw temper tantrums frequently, was stunted in development, and refused to

Stephanie is a local accountant in Amarillo. Like most working parents, she struggled to balance a family life with a career. She often felt guilty for missing out on her children’s school events and at times family vacations. Stephanie justified to herself that providing income to her family was just as important, if not more, then spending one on one time with her family. During another hectic day at the office she was informed her 4:00 appointment had arrived. Stephanie was stunned to see her beautiful nine year old daughter entering her office. Haley shared several events of the past year that Stephanie had missed including parent/ teacher night, soccer games, and choir concerts. Haley handed her mom her most recent art project and said she was worried mom would never see it unless she made an appointment. Stephanie suddenly realized that she had been valuing her client’s time more than her own family. Stephanie vowed to make family time a priority.

form bonds with her parents, grandparents, and others. Chelsea’s story is an extreme example of what lack of parental bonding can do. Although Chelsea was given a wonderful loving home, her lack of affection during the first six weeks of life will not be forgotten. A child’s development works on a step by step basis. A child cannot complete the next stage unless the previous stage has been mastered. Everything a parent does with a child, from a kiss to a smile, shapes his emotional foundation of health. Gentle touching, talking, eye contact, congratulating, playing, and explaining helps to form a child’s understanding of their world. Positive relationships and attachment can help a child to excel intellectually and emotionally forming solid relation-

VIRGO: AUG. 23-SEPT. 22 Practicality and conscientious attention to detail are two of your Virgo child’s foremost traits, even from an early age. You might find her organizing her toys or saving her allowance to buy some coveted item while other children spend their money on immediate gratification. Your little Virgo isn’t likely to be frivolous. Rather, she measures the pros and cons of a situation and goes with what makes the most

sense. Virgo children have high standards and are naturally cautious, so they can seem picky or reserved, but this is simply because they prefer to stand back and assess a situation rather than throwing themselves into it. Your Virgo child is a natural helper. She appreciates order and genuinely wants to pitch in and be of service to the family and, later, to the world -- a trait that should be commended and developed. As the parent of a Virgo, you’ll need to temper your child’s expectation of perfection with the message that sometimes, good enough is just that -- good enough. Build up her confidence as much as you can, for your child is likely to be self-effacing and overly humble. Help your little Virgo relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life by getting outside into nature -- going swimming or for a long, meandering walk. Balanced meals, scheduled naps, and regular downtime will all be important for your Virgo child, who may tend to be rather fretful and anxious. Anything that promotes relaxation will help your child stay calm and centered.

• Baked chips. Deep-fried potato chips typically get more than half of their calories from fat. Stock up on baked chips instead. Baked tortilla chips are another good choice; you can find flavorful brands that get only a third of their calories from fat. • Granola bars. A great alternative to a gooey candy bar, a sweet, crunchy granola bar has fiber and far less fat. • Fruit bars. Fig Newtons are low in fat and provide fiber and potassium. Raisin biscuits are another great choice. • Frozen fruit bars. The best of these frozen treats contain chunks of real fruit — orange, pineapple, peach, and banana, to name a few. • Frozen grapes. If your child resists eating fruit, try keeping a bowl of rinsed grapes in the freezer. (Remember to cut them in quarters for a young child.) They’re rich in antioxidants — and freezing seems to transform them into bonbons in the eyes of kids. • Fruit juice. Make sure it’s 100 percent fruit, with no added sugar, and you’ll give your child the goodness of fruit in a tall, refreshing glass. • Energy drinks. On a hot day when your kid just won’t slow down, a sports drink like Gatorade can stave off dehydration. • Fruit shakes. Whip together a banana, a splash of fruit juice, and a handful of berries in your blender, and you’ve got a nutritious shake. You can add yogurt for more protein and calcium.

Submit Your FREE or Discounted Services For Children At No Charge! Email to: submit@amarillokidz.com While the majority of the listings are places where kids eat free some of the restaurants charge a small amount – in most occasions $.99 so they are not actually “free” but a very good deal nonetheless. You will also find that some of the restaurants where kids eat free have certain restrictions whether it be limited hours on a certain day, the number of kids eating free per purchasing adult or age restrictions. Please call the restaurant location you plan on attending to get your free kids meal before you pack the kids in the car to go. Some of the individual restaurants may choose to opt out of the promotion or have slight differences. And please let us know if any of these special offers expire or have changed.
