EXHIBITION DESIGN HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN RESEARCH PROJECT

OBJECTIVE: The Hiding Place is an exhibition space that is a part of a Design Knowledge Center, located in Baltimore, Maryland. This exhibition space must implement the knowledge learned from a chosen topic of Senior Thesis - Advancements in Mental Health Facilities:Therapeutic Interiors for the Benefit of Individuals with Mental Illnesses. Using approximately 4,520 sq ft of the center, the exhibition space should resemble a well designed mental health facility and implement the appropriate materials, finishes, and furnishings that benefit today’s mental health facilities.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION: The Hiding Placeis an exhibition space informing the public of the interior elements that can be beneficial to the health of those with mental illness.Comparing today’s mental health facilities to Mental Asylums of the 19th and 20th centuries, The Hiding Place successfullylaysout what materials, finishes, furnishings, and services are appropriate for mental health facilities today.

THE HIDING PLACE THESIS STATEMENT: Some believe the reestablishment of the typical standard for mental asylums would help individuals with mental illnesses today; however, there are too many stigmas attached to this former system. So presenting a facility with a therapeutic atmosphere incorporating the interior design elements proven to be beneficial for this population is the necessary approach to undertake the mental health crisis in our country.

PRELIMINARY SKETCHES / BRAINSTORMING The first mental health facilities, asylums, were not properly designed architecturally, nor were they equipped with the appropriate materials and finishes needed to benefit the wellness of those with mental illnesses. Moving forward in the design of today’smental health facilities, elements such as artwork need to be incorporated. Artwork, among many other design elements stimulates calmness, peace and relaxation. Interiors were not the only improvements needed to better treat mental health patients. Organizing the proper services in a green surrounding environment are what can expedite healing in patients.

Concrete wasincorporated in old mental asylums. This hard material may have made it difficult for patients to connect with their environment as a place of healing. Concrete is a very hard, cold, and dark material. The wallsof mental asylums were covered in paint that easily attracted dirt and damage. Chosen paint colors were also not at all appropriate for a healing environment.

Soft fabric upholstery is important for the comfort of patients and guests. Allowing for a more quiet and peaceful environment as well in regards to acoustics. Having a light and neutral color on the walls is less of a distraction for patients but also presents more of a clean environment.

Wood can bring a nature feel to the environment and provide some necessary texture. Including dark and light wood tones can provide a contrast in neutral tones, visuallybringing the space together.

HEALTHCARE DESIGN PEDIATRIC OFFICE

OBJECTIVE: An up and coming pediatric center, located in one of Connecticut’s small towns, wishes to accept small patients into an exciting environment that is safe and universally accessible. A center with a specific theme but maintains the appropriate privacy for a healthcare facility is essential. DESIGN DESCRIPTION: This butterfly themed pediatric center provides a playful, yet professional, environment that is accessible for all individuals. Incorporating the colors of nature and materials resembling elements from the outdoors, this pediatrics center serves as a calming environment that suits the needs of the young patients, their parents, and the employees. RETAIL DESIGN WILDFANG OBJECTIVE: Wildfang, a women’s clothing store founded in Portland, Oregon, is expanding their brand and placing new stores across the country. Destiny USA Mall of Syracuse, NY will hold Wildfang’s first mall outlet. Maintaining its current industrial, geometrical, bright theme and color scheme, their first outlet will invite new customers from the upper regions of New York State.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION: The theme of this Widfang location almost mirrors that of the already existing Wildfang locations as the brand must remain consistent in its look and marketing. The triangular arches at both the entrance and the cash wrap present an intriguing structural feature, inviting customers into the store. Triangular clothing displays and hexagonal accessory displays are incorporated to continue the stores modern and sharp qualities. The geometric theme is then carried out onto the ceiling with wooden beams and drop down feature. The materials, finishes, and color scheme precisely represents Wildfang’s company, ultimately creating an environment that works, is familiar and inviting.
