WORLD RECORD! S
ydney McLaughlin obliterated the women’s 400m hurdles world record at the US Olympic trials on Sunday. The 21-year-old ran an astonishing 51.90 seconds, smashing the previous record by .26 seconds to become the first woman to run the 400m hurdles in less than 52 seconds. In the process of winning, McLaughlin beat the previous world record holder Dalilah Muhammad to cement herself as the favorite for the Tokyo Games this year.Following a powerful finish, McLaughlin sank to her haunches, mouth gaping in surprise. ”This season, working with my new coach and just my new support system, it’s truly just faith and trusting the process, and I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said McLaughlin after the race. It’s been a remarkable record progression for the women’s 400m hurdles, which was only improved on four times from 1986 to 2019, now the record has been toppled three times in two years, with Muhammad breaking her own record, now McLaughlin taking the crown. The duo represent USA’s dominance in the sport, and a very real chance they could finish 1st and 2nd in Tokyo. It’s going to be one of the most fun battles to watch at the 2021 Olympics. McLaughlin has been chasing Muhammad for the last few years and finally beat her rival on one of the biggest stages in Eugene, Oregon. The 21-year-old became the youngest American track and field athlete to compete in the Olympics in 44 years when she advanced to the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles in Rio.
After one year at the University of Kentucky—which included a collegiate record in her signature event—McLaughlin turned pro and has since earned a silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles and gold as a member of Team USA’s winning 4x400-meter relay at the 2019 IAAF World Championships. “All of the glory to God. Honestly this season, working with my new coach and new support system is truly about faith and trusting the process,” McLaughlin said on the NBC broadcast.

NOAH LYLES
REMEMBER THAT NAME! How did you summon the best race of the season that you needed in this Olympic trial final? I relaxed, I stopped stressing, and I let my body do what it does. I was asking for alotin the prelims I was just thinking more, more. Then back there after the break we came back and jusst thought to just flow and let it come. I am tired of stressing and fighting. My colleagues were commenting on how well you ran the turn was that of a key to win tonight? Yes, I was practicing alot of that turn and that first 120 meters and it has really come into handy. Now eventhough I am three months behind of training, I am ready to go out there and come after everything. How does it sound to be an OLympian? It sounds nice and I have been waiting for nine years. After, 2016 I came up short by one place, my mindset on becoming an OLympian again has been on my mind. After not finishing first in the qualying did you feel like you had something to prove in the final? Sometimes I do and you know sometimes the thought of that you did not get first. What I know is that who I am in the semis is not who I am going to be in the finals. No I am not pressing or gasing it. Me and Erryon were talking about the race. How his running is great and tells me he running of out fear. What did you think about Knighton? I am so proud of him. I was so happy and I was hoping his name would pop up in the screen and it did. I was so happy for him because he literally bodied what I wanted to do in 2016 and it hurt so much knowing I did not make the team. Seeing him improve round after round, I was just hoping he would not gas out. I am just so happy for him.
SHA’CARRI RICHARDSON
THE RISING STAR With her long orange hair and long, multi-colored nails, Sha’Carri Richardson sprinted straight to her Olympic debut in Tokyo. The 21-year-old won the women’s 100m at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials with a time of 10.86 seconds, bursting into the lead in the final few meters. She immediately ran up into the stands at the new Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, for a long embrace with her grandmother, Betty Harp. “Emotionally — unbelievable,” Richardson told NBC reporter Lewis Johnson, “the fact that I am an Olympian no matter what, a dream since I was young. Being happy is an understatement. Happy, nervous, all of those emotions.” Though she was racing with her usual confidence, the 5-foot-1 sprinter was carrying a lot of emotion with her on the track after losing her biological mother last week. Richardson told reporters her family dynamic is a “very, very, very confusing and sensitive topic,” but that she loves her biological mother and will pay her respect every time she steps onto the track. Given what they have been through recently — and how Richardson’s grandmother has helped shape her — she said that the time spent holding her grandmother after the race was more exciting than winning the race itself. “My grandmother is my heart, my grandmother is my superwoman, so to be able to have her here at the biggest meet of my life, and being able to cross the finish line and run up the steps knowing I’m an Olympian now, it just felt amazing,” Richardson said.
