December 2015
By: Seth Halpern, Editor Christmas is a time of family traditions. Some of those traditions lead to embarrassment for many years to come. Not all Christmas photos are bad, in fact, you’ll see some of our sponsors in the following pages – and they look great! Many of us do something special for this season. We are a people who like to remember certain events in our own special way whether there is a history of several generations or a newly minted tradition. For many, choosing and decorating the tree is a longstanding tradition, as well as sending out greeting cards, putting out cookies

for Santa, going caroling, or a host of other activities. Other nations have their own unique traditions to celebrate the season. In Japan, many families have Christmas with the Colonel- they eat KFC on Christmas Eve! Many German families hide a pickle in the Christmas tree, earning a gift for the child who finds it. Ethiopians celebrate Christmas on January 7th. Theologians have long debated when Jesus was really born and today most scholars believe it wasn’t Dec 25th. There are so many opinions and traditions around the world that what’s important is what it means to you and your family. Right? Well, yes and no.

The Christmas season is undoubtedly one of the most special times of year. It brings families and loved ones together with warm memories of the past and thankfulness of the present. We enjoy watching the children’s excitement over gifts and reflect over the passage of time. Unfortunately, for some, the holiday season is a difficult time of loneliness or regret over past mistakes. The truth is that whether the Christmas season for you represents a time of happiness and fun or a time that you would rather sleep through, something critical is being left out. That “something” is really “someone” and it is how the day derives its name. This is the day that our world has chosen to

honor and celebrate the birth of Jesus the Messiah (“Christ” in the Greek language). It’s His birthday (or at least the day we’ve decided to honor Him). It is odd that most who “celebrate” His birthday don’t even recognize Him on this very day. It would be like having a birthday party for your Uncle Joe and not inviting him! Even for many who do understand that this is about the birth of “Baby Jesus”, we often don’t portray the story as it was. It was not a “Silent Night”, but more likely a cold night in a noisy, smelly barn. It would be a time when a madman ruler stirred by the devil would seek to kill babies

Sanctuary lights fade, leaving a glow from two Christmas trees on the platform. Whispers hush and music begins. “Love transcending!” the choir announces. The music is double forte (loud) and the voices are majestic and rather slow. “Love, unending. It was love and love alone that brought Him down!” There are some recitations and solos almost word-for-word from Scripture, then the tempo slows and a ladies’ chorus sings, “In a virgin mother’s keeping/, He, the Savior humbly lay./ Oh, what grace and love beyond compare!/ He whose train of heavenly glory/ could have filled the earth,/ stooped to write love’s sweetest story/ by His lowly birth.” Then the triumphant interlude, “Love transcending!” This musical, written by John Peterson in 1957, continues in song and word climaxing with “Oh, Holy Night” in counter melody with “Love transcending!” (If I’ve piqued your interest, you can find videos of Love Transcending on YouTube. Music books are available at Amazon.com). Christmas music has a way of invading my spirit in its deepest parts. Our church performed this cantata in 1964 (according to my mother’s copy of the book). She sang in the choir. I kept the book, played the piano score, and held a concert of one when no one was listening. Many years have passed since then, and I am still impacted by the lyrics. What is love transcending? There’s lots to love about Christmas. We love the decorations, parties, presents, carols, and family gettogethers, but this is love that feeds our senses. The love of the Father who sent his son from heaven is so much more than that. It’s an unconditional
December, it’s here, with Christmas just around the corner and a new year right on its heels. But, let’s not rush the New Year, instead let’s delight in this moment in time we have been given; the time to celebrate an event that changed the course of history for you, me and all mankind; one that would alter the human relationship with the living God, all because of a baby’s birth. What seemed an ordinary event in life had an extraordinary beginning, when the seed of God was planted in the womb of a virgin girl, resulting in an anything but an ordinary newborn child. A birth that warranted the angels of heaven announcing its birth. Although this baby named Jesus came to save all, his birth was not announced to the elite in society, instead to the lowly shepherds who then did an extraordinary thing, they risked their very livelihood by leaving their sheep alone in order to seek out the baby, the foretold Messiah, the Savior. Fast forward two thousand plus years to you and I today. What are we willing to potentially sacrifice in order to seek out our Savior? Are we willing to be inconvenienced as the Magi were when they traveled a great distance to be in

love that sees us as we really are and accepts us regardless of our flaws. It’s a sacrificial love, giving without expecting anything in return. It’s love in action, a committed and chosen love. How do you define transcending? You may know that “trans” means to go across or beyond, and that’s exactly what transcending means: going beyond the limits of possible expression; exceeds belief, surpasses; excels. What God did in sending Jesus is beyond expression. It’s a marvel. Jesus went beyond time and space to enter earth’s atmosphere. He shed his immortal body to take on human flesh. He set aside his role as Prince of Heaven to become a helpless infant. The hand that flung stars into the universe, pounded a carpenter’s hammer. The one adored by angels was rejected by the very ones he created. The next question is “Why?” Why would the celestial become terrestrial, the infinite become finite, the everlasting destined to die? Peterson wrote, “It was love and love alone that brought him down.” And for whom? For you and for me. The King of Heaven cannot bear that one of his creation be separated from him because of an inherited sinful nature. By becoming like us, Jesus became our substitute. His righteousness in exchange for our guilt, his purity for our stains. There just aren’t words that can express the magnitude of God’s gift of Jesus. John Peterson came mighty close. Love transcending! Let’s sing our hearts out in celebration!
His presence? Are we willing to lay our treasures at Jesus’ feet? Are we willing to risk being ridiculed, slandered, gossiped about and misjudged as Mary was, in order to carry Jesus inside us, letting others see the evidence of Him growing in us, birthing a new life? Are we willing to be a Joseph, taking on the great responsibility of raising Godly children, those born to us - as well of those who need a Godly influence where we have the opportunity to be spiritual parents? Are we willing to be, as Jesus was, about the Father’s business, despite the potential consequences and hardships; even unto death? God gave us His greatest gift, his Son Jesus. Jesus gave us His greatest gift, His life. What shall we give Him; what is our greatest gift?

Burned Alive In The Womb, She Miraculously Survived A Failed Abortion By Mark Ellis Blog.godreports.com She was born weighing only two pounds, with cerebral palsy, and grotesque burn marks covering most of her body. But she should not have been born at all because she is one of a very few human beings to survive a saline abortion. “After 18 hours of being burned in my mother’s womb, I was delivered alive in an abortion clinic in Los Angeles,” Gianna Jessen, 38, testified in a congressional hearing September 9th. “If abortion is about women’s rights, then what were mine?” she asked. The House Judiciary Committee is probing Planned Parenthood’s activities related to the harvesting and sale of fetal body parts, based on 10 undercover videos released recently by the Center for Medical Progress. Jessen, born at 30-weeks of pregnancy to a 17-year-old mom, became a pro-life activist after her adoptive mom conveyed the truth to her when she was 12. “I am alive because of the Power of Jesus Christ alone. In whom I live, move, and have my being. Without Him I would have nothing; with Him, I
to walk, but by the age of three I was walking with a frame and leg braces.” In 2004, she ran her first marathon in seven-and-a-half hours. While Jessen has forgiven her biological mother, she has not developed a relationship with her. She remains very close to her adoptive mom, Dianna DePaul. Jessen’s life was the inspiration for the movie “October Baby,” which grossed more than $5 million, and received high marks from many observers.
Abortion survivor Gianna Jessen testifies before Congress on September 9, 2015 have all,” Jessen said in her testimony. “Thankfully, the abortionist was not at work yet,” she recounted to the committee. Her birth happened at 6 a.m., three hours ahead of the abortionist’s scheduled arrival. “If he had been there, he would have ended my life with strangulation, suffocation, or leaving me there to die. Instead a nurse called an ambulance, and I was rushed to the hospital.” “There were many witnesses to my entry into this world,” she told the BBC. “My biological mother and other young girls at the clinic, who also awaited the death of their babies, were
the first to greet me and I am told this was a hysterical moment.” Jessen was hospitalized for three months before she was placed in foster care. She was adopted at the age of four. Doctors discovered Jessen had cerebral palsy when she was 17-monthsold, because her brain was starved of oxygen during the failed abortion. “The doctors said I was in a horrible state,” she told The Telegraph. “They said I would never be able to lift up my head, but eventually I did. “Then they said I would never be able to sit up straight, but I sat up straight. Then they said I would never be able

“...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matt 25:40
Since when did the greeting Merry Christmas become offensive? Maybe you don’t follow this “war on Christmas” as closely as I do but it is real and it is ridiculous! One quick suggestion. Consider (follower of Jesus Christ) to not do your Christmas shopping at any retailer that excludes Christmas from their marketing strategy. I could give example after example of the reality of this politically correct trend, but for the sake of space I encourage you to do your own research to see for yourself. The reason they (retailers) give for not mentioning the word Christmas in their Christmas advertising (no pun intended) is because they don’t want to offend people who don’t celebrate Christmas. Ok, then let’s take that a step further shall we? Then we shouldn’t mention the name of the following holidays because….
Offensive?
• Thanksgiving – potential to offend ungrateful people. • Valentine’s Day – Potential to offend unloving people. • Groundhogs DayPotential to offend PETA because of the exploitation of animals. • Independence Day – potential to offend those who hate America (there is unfortunately a reality to this one) • Labor Day – potential to offend the unemployed or lazy people. Okay, maybe my logic is a tad insane, but you get the point. So where to from here. Stand for what you believe in. Stand for Jesus Christ. Stand against this politically correct world. If you are a true disciple of Christ, remember this, if something is politically correct, it is usually Biblically corrupt. I wrap up with this. Merry Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season. Pass it on.

13 Christians Who Risked Everything to Defend Biblical Truth
abortion giant was more real to this young woman with only two hundred dollars in her bank account; It was overwhelming,” Perkins wrote. “But Lila refused to yield to fear, no matter how strong the attacks against her.”
By Samuel Smith, CP Reporter Christian Post (www.christianpost.com)
As America continues to grow more hostile toward public prayer and conservative religious viewpoints, younger generations of courageous Christians will be faced with the challenge of defying the norm of secular culture to defend prayer and biblical truth. In his book No Fear: Real Stories of a Courageous New Generation Standing for Truth, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins highlights 11 instances when young men and women risked everything to defend biblical truth and their religious beliefs from intense societal, political, cultural and spiritual opposition. Perkins hopes readers, especially younger Christians, will be inspired to live out their faith with the same courage displayed in the real-life stories exhibited in his book, No Fear, which was praised by leading evangelist Franklin Graham, who believes the book will “help raise up a new generation of world changers.” The 13 Christians Perkins writes about in his book,
Chad Farnan In 2008, 16-year-old Chad Farnan of Mission Viejo, California, filed a federal lawsuit against his history teacher and charged that the Capistrano Valley High School teacher made a habit of mocking Christianity by saying things like “Jesus glasses” obscure truth. The lawsuit states that the teacher violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment by promoting irreligion over religion. Although a federal court ruled in 2009 that the teacher did violate the First Amendment, the ruling was overturned by a federal appeals court in 2011. The Supreme Court declined to review Farnan’s case in 2012. “Increasingly, more and more ordinary people like Chad will be faced with the same decision,” Perkins wrote. “Do I stand on the sidelines as my faith and values are threatened?”
Lila Rose Rose, who at the age of 15 began pro-life activism by founding the organization Live Action, made a name for herself during her college days at UCLA by continuously standing up to many of America’s largest abortion providers. Rose produced several undercover videos that targeted Planned Parenthood to prove that, in many cities across the U.S., abortion provider were covering up abuse and prostitution of underage children, and performing sex-selective abortions. Considering that Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry had much to lose from the Live Action videos, Rose was faced with death threats and lawsuits. Despite the threats, she continues her pro-life activism and her role as president of Live Action. “The threat from a billion-dollar

Moriah Peters Peters, a Texas girl who always dreamed of a career in show business, moved to Los Angeles in 2001. Being a devout Christian, she had her own policy of waiting until marriage to kiss. Peters, 23, auditioned for American Idol in 2010 but was turned away by the reality show’s judges — Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Avril Lavigne. She was told that her image was too wholesome. Lavigne told Peters that she should go experience the world, “feel sexy” and “kiss a guy” in order to make it in the music business. “God opened doors for me to get this far and then closed them, and I am not going to question it because I know He has bigger things for me,” Peters said in an interview during the show.
Despite comments from the judges, Peters stayed true to her convictions and eventually earned a record deal on her own. She has released two albums: I Choose Jesus, which debuted in 2012, and Brave, released in 2014.

Should We Pray For ISIS To Be Defeated Or Converted? Russell Moore Russellmoore.com Recently, many of us watched with horror and heartbreak as reports came of terrorism in Paris. At least 120 people were killed in what appears to be a coordinated operation by the Islamic State (ISIS), a terror organization that has murdered thousands of innocent people over the last year, including many Christians. ISIS is one of the clearest embodiments of persecution and evil that we in the West have seen in many years. Their very existence is a commitment to wiping out political and cultural opposition through violence. They prey relentlessly on the innocent, including children. There’s no question that ISIS is a menace that must be engaged through just war. But is justice the only thing that Christians should pray for when it comes to ISIS? Should we pray that our military, in the words of singer Toby Keith, “light up their world like the Fourth of July”? Or should we pray that, as a friend of mine posted on social media, there would be a Saul among those ISIS militants, whose salvation might turn the Arab world upside down with the gospel? These are not contradictory prayers, and to each of them I say, “Amen!” Jesus says to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us (Mat. 5:44). The Spirit of Jesus in the prophets and in the apostles also tells us that those who turn a blind eye to the killing of others are wrong. The fact that we feel contradictory praying both for justice against the Islamic State and for salvation for Islamic State terrorists is partly because we fail to distinguish between the mission of the state in the use of the temporal sword against

evildoers (Rom. 13:4) and the mission of the church in the use of the sword of the Spirit against sin and death and the devil (Eph. 6). But that’s not, I think, the main problem. The main problem is that we sometimes forget that we are called to be a people of both justice and justification, and that these two are not contradictory. It sounds awfully spiritual, at first blush, to say that we should not pray for the defeat of our enemies on the field of battle. But that’s only the case if these enemies are not actually doing anything. This terrorist group is raping, enslaving, beheading, crucifying our brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as other innocent people. To not pray for swift action against them is to not care about what Jesus said we should seek, what we should hunger and thirst for, for justice. A world in which murderous gangs commit genocide without penalty is not a “merciful” world but an unjust horror show. As Christians, we ought to be, above all people, concerned with such justice. We not only have the common grace standing of caring about stopping murder and injustice, rooted in the image of God and the law written on the heart. We also have the personal implication here. It’s our household being wiped out in the Middle East, the very place where our church started. For us, this isn’t a matter of “they;” it’s a matter of “us.” At the same time, praying for the salvation of our enemies, even those committing the most horrific of crimes, is not a call to stop praying for justice against them. The cross, after all, is not forgiveness in a contemporary therapeutic sense—in which one is merely absolved of wrongdoing as
though it were all a misunderstanding. No, that’s precisely the Apostle Paul’s point in the Book of Romans. The gospel does not say, “Don’t’ worry about it; it’s okay.” The gospel points us to the cross where sin is absorbed in a substitute. God’s righteous condemnation of sin is there. He does not, and cannot, enable wickedness. And God’s mercy is there in that he is the One who sends his Son as the propitiation for sin. He is both “just and the justifier of the One who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26). The gospel doesn’t leave sin unpunished. Every sin is punished, either a the Place of the Skull, in Christ, or in the judgment of hell, on one’s own. The thief on the cross—a Middle Eastern terrorist by Rome’s standards— in his act of faith did not believe that his salvation exempted him from justice. He confessed that his sentence
was justice, and that he was receiving “the due reward for our deeds” (Lk. 23:41) even as he cried out to Jesus for merciful entrance into the kingdom of Christ (Lk. 23:42). We ought, indeed, to pray for the gospel to go forward, and that there might be a new Saul of Tarsus turned away from murdering to gospel witness. At the same time, we ought to pray, with the martyrs in heaven, for justice against those who do such wickedness. Praying for the military defeat of our enemies, and that they might turn to Christ, these are not contradictory prayers because salvation doesn’t mean turning an eye away from justice. We can pray for gospel rootedness in the Middle East, and we can pray to light up their world like the Fourth of July, at the same time. We are, after all, the people of the cross.

‘Suicidal’ Nickelodeon Star Kel Mitchell Finds ‘Peace’ After Turning to Christ Samuel Smith, CP Reporter Christian Post (www.christianpost.com) Former Nickelodeon teen star Kel Mitchell says his rekindled relationship with Christ has saved him from a life of suicidal depression and drug abuse after his time in the television spotlight came to a crashing halt. Although Mitchell and “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson arrived on the Nickelodeon scene at the same time and co-starred in a few hit productions in the mid to late 1990s, such as “Kenan & Kel,” “All That” and the movie “Good Burger,” Mitchell’s post-Nickelodeon career had struggled to gain traction or attention. After the “Kenan & Kel” series came to a close in 2000, both Thompson and Mitchell tried out for SNL in 2003. Although Thompson was hired on as an SNL cast member, Mitchell’s audition did not go well and he was not chosen to star in the NBC weekend sketch program. As Thompson remained in the spotlight, many kids of the 90s began wondering what happened to Kel. Rumors of Mitchell’s death eventually began to swirl. In a testimony shared on his website,
the 37-year-old Mitchell admits that, although he did not die, his life became mired in severe depression, sin and suicidal thoughts while dealing with his divorce and other issues. “I have been through so many ups and downs in my life,” Mitchell wrote. “Suicidal, divorce, drug and alcohol usage, deep in sin, dealing with the lost of [loved] ones to gang violence, debt, hurt, pain, vanity, lust, heartbreak, feeling LOST looking for answers. I have seen, felt and been in all types of sin and have been done wrong by others.” Mitchell told People Magazine in October that after his marriage to Tyisha Hampton ended in divorce in 2004, he felt like he had “hit a wall.” “I was like, ‘Okay. I need to figure out what I need to do in my life,’” he

his name with praying and song.” The actor has returned to Nickelodeon and now stars in the network’s new series “Game Shakers,” which airs on Saturday nights. Mitchell also tours as a standup comedian and motivational speaker. “When sorrow [tries] to come knocking, I know I have my God that will destroy sorrow in its tracks,” Mitchell wrote. “People always gossip about a new diet they found and lay out a plan so you can do it. Well, I want to gossip about the Word of God and tell you how it saved me, feels good and it works! If you are what you eat, then I am eating SPIRIT FOOD daily. I’m YOUNG FLY AND SAVED!” The actor concludes his testimony post by asking readers who are ready give their lives to Christ to recite the “sinner’s prayer.” He then lists five things for readers to do to “follow up” on their commitments to Christ — get baptized, tell somebody about their new faith, spend time with God in prayer and in Scripture, spend time in fellowship with other followers of Christ and go to church. “If you are ready to admit your need for a clean slate in life, the God of second chances is waiting to give it to you,” Mitchell asserts.

Mitchell, who grew up on Chicago’s South Side as a pastor’s grandson, said that in an effort to ease his pain, he decided to return to the true source of comfort that he knew as a child. “I was trying to figure it all out on my own. But what I needed to do was turn to Him,” the actor said. “Once I found that clarity with Christ, I knew everything would work out.” Mitchell eventually became the stage manager at a non-denominational Christian church in Los Angeles while he continued his acting career. In 2012, the actor remarried to his new wife, rapper Asia Lee. Mitchell told People that he is now at “peace” with his life because of the relationships he has formed with God, his two children and his wife. “Let go of your past, be a new creature in Christ!” Mitchell instructs readers of his testimony. “I did! LIFE MATTERS presented by Yuba-Sutter Right To Life Focusing On the Cobwebs and Missing the Message
By Heather Pugh I was at Church one Sunday and happened to look up during a prayer when something caught my eye and grabbed my attention. A cobweb. But not just any cobweb. This cobweb was happily clinging to a corner of the ceiling and it appeared to have escaped notice for at least 6 months, all the while feasting on Miracle Grow. That’s how big it was. Prayers continued. The Scriptures were read. A sermon was given but I couldn’t take my eyes off the cobweb. “How could that be removed?”, I wondered to myself. The ceilings must be 25 feet high. I continued pondering the dilemma. “Are there ladders that tall that could be employed?” The ceiling fans came whirring on and the cobweb swayed sweetly to and fro as if attempting to bring attention to itself with a lovely dance. It worked. I was fixated. Just as the sweet swaying was lulling me in to what threatened to be a permanent state of indifference, the cobweb appeared as though it were reaching for something. Stretching its dusty arms toward something greater than itself. I broadened my focus and saw the crucifix. A beautiful cross with an even more beautiful savior adorning the surface – blood, scourges, and crown of thorns. I scolded myself for focusing on the cobweb and missing the message.
This world is, was, and always will be full of cobwebs. Some are dusty and clinging to ceilings, while others are disguised as the troubles and worries of everyday living. We all have more than our fair share of things to lose our thoughts and selves in. But God is there patiently waiting for us to see His love that is displayed right before our very eyes in so many beautiful ways. The colors, sounds, and smells of Christmas can at times be both overwhelming and heartwarming. But before you allow yourself to be caught up in the gift-buying frenzy and the cookie baking marathons, remember the sweetest gift that ever was given. The gift of Jesus to every man, woman, and child in every corner of the globe from the beginning of time until the very last day on Earth. And he came as a newborn child. If this doesn’t speak to the preciousness of the unborn, nothing will. Please, this Christmas, as you decorate your homes, churches, and yards with nativity scenes of varying sizes and states of grandeur, remember to say a prayer for all children around the world, especially those still growing within their mothers. Let us together make this Christmas and coming new year a time of focusing on God’s message of love for us all, especially the unborn babies who are the most helpless, and ignoring those ever-present cobweb
Finding Freedom in God’s Perfect Peace If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that God can provide through Jesus Christ and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control. This Pastor’s Message for the Man Who Killed His Pregnant Wife Should Bring Us All to Our Knees Indianapolis pastor Davey Blackburn has an amazing message for the man who killed his wife and unborn child. Only God, my friends. Only God. Two weeks ago, Indianapolis Pastor Davey Blackburn came home from the gym and was met with unimaginable tragedy. His pregnant wife had been shot in the head during a home invasion. (Ed Note: There was also evidence of sexual assault) Amanda, the 28-year-old mother of a 1-year-old son (and baby on the way) was rushed to the hospital after being found “unresponsive and suffering
from apparent signs of trauma” by first responders last Tuesday. Sadly, she passed away in the hospital in critical condition. Sunday night, an arrest was made in the case and an 18-year-old man will be charged with Amanda’s murder. Davey released a statement after the arrest, and his words cut my heart clean in two. He said: “Though it does not undo the pain we are feeling, I was extremely relieved to get the news of the arrest made last night of Amanda’s killer. The investigators have assured me they have a solidly-

But it was the beginning of what would become our freedom. Our freedom from death, our freedom from the evil, and even our freedom from ourselves. This baby would live a perfect life and then pay the price of a tortured death so that we can be reconciled to God. So that God HIS Father, would become God OUR Father. The skeptics can argue about dates, locations and all the rest, but there can be no argument about
who is the most significant person in the history of the world. This is why the calendar is divided into the years before He came to us (B.C.) and after (A.D.). He changed the world. He changed the calendar. Have you let Him change your heart? It doesn’t matter what traditions and activities you and your family participate in this Christmas or whether you have family or not. The important issue this Christmas is whether or not you have invited Jesus to celebrate it with you. Merry CHRISTmas!

built case to ensure justice is levied and the process is expedited. The family and I couldn’t be more thankful for the level of compassion and professionalism the IMPD and investigators have shown us through the last couple of weeks. My hope is for 3 things in the weeks and months to come: (1) That the court system would have wisdom on how to prosecute this man, so that no one else endures the pain Amanda and our family have had to endure because of his actions. (2) That through all of this and although there will be great consequences for his actions, he would become truly sorry for what he has done and would even begin to experience the lifetransforming power of the Grace and Mercy of Jesus Christ. (3) That Jesus would give me and our family a heart of forgiveness. Though everything inside of me wants to hate, be angry, and slip into despair I choose the route of forgiveness, grace and hope. If there is one thing I’ve learned from Amanda in the 10 years we were together, it’s this: Choosing to let my emotions drive my decisions is recipe for a hopeless and fruitless life. Today I am deciding to love, not hate. Today I am deciding to extend forgiveness, not bitterness. Today I am
Davey & Amanda Blackburn deciding to hope, not despair. By Jesus’ power at work within us, the best is STILL yet to come. Even when I don’t see it, I believe it to be true.” I can’t imagine going through such a tragedy and responding with such love. Blackburn’s response is a true testament of what the power of Christ can do to the hearts of men and women, and like Davey, I pray that Amanda’s killer will come to know that power of Christ too. Please join me in praying for the Blackburns and for the young man who took Amanda’s life, too.

Helping Syrian Christians By: John Stonestreet In all the confusion over the Syrian refugee crisis, one thing is clear: Christians are targets of genocide. Yet our government refuses to acknowledge it. A week after the ISIS-directed attacks in Paris, Christians are uncertain, even divided, over what to do with the millions of refugees created by the wars in Syria and Iraq. But on this we should be united: helping our fellow Christians escape. Unfortunately, we have to begin by getting our leaders to understand the peril our brothers and sisters are even in. After countless reports of antiChristian outrages by ISIS, including mass beheadings and executions, you’d think that the peril and the need for rescue would be obvious. But it’s not, at least not to government officials. According to an article by Nina Shea at National Review, “Christians are to be excluded from an impending official United States government declaration of ISIS genocide.” Shea cites a Yahoo News report which states that the ISIS attacks against the Yazidis will be designated as acts of genocide, but not attacks against Christians. This matters because, as Shea writes,
“A genocide designation would have significant policy implications for America … offers of aid, asylum, and other protections to such victims.” Without this designation, the U.S. and other governments would not be bound to act to suppress or even prevent the genocide of these Christians. And a glimpse of what this inaction might look like is provided by a recent story at CNS news, based on State Department data. “Of [the] 2,184 Syrian refugees admitted into the U.S. since the Syrian civil war erupted in 2011, only 53 (or, 2.4 percent) have been Christians.” Now for anyone with even a passing familiarity with what’s going on in Syria, these numbers should raise all sorts of red flags. First, according to Wikipedia and the CIA Fact Book, Christians make up 10 percent of Syria’s population. What’s more, according to the Catholic organization Aid to the Church in Need, between 500,000 and 700,000 Syrian Christians have fled the country. That’s between 16 and 23 percent of the estimated 3,000,000 Syrian refugees who have fled. The high percentage of Christian refugees, relative to their percentage of the population, makes perfect sense,

given their being the principal target of ISIS violence. What doesn’t make sense is that Christians are such a tiny percentage of the Syrians who have been granted asylum in the U.S. Why? Well, according to Shea, a significant part of the problem is “American reliance on a United Nations refugee-resettlement program that disproportionately excludes them.” This program is centered on UN-sponsored refugee camps that are far from where most Christians live, because they are largely urban-dwellers. What’s more, according to Shea, “many non-Muslim refugees try hard to avoid these camps.” Christian Aid Mission reports that “U.N. camps are ‘dangerous’ places where ISIS, militias, and gangs traffic in women and threaten men who refuse to swear allegiance to the caliphate.” Shea adds that “such intimidation is also reportedly evident in migrant camps in Europe, as well, leading the German police union to recommend separate shelters for Christian and Muslim migrant groups.” This puts Christians at a disadvantage when it comes to applying for refugee status within the U. S. So our first take has to be to urge our
leaders to remove this disadvantage. Call your elected representatives and urge them to push the administration to recognize Christians in Syria and Iraq as targets of genocide. At the very least, the U.S. should reach out to those groups who are caring for Christian refugees and end its over-reliance on the UN program. This is a goal that all Christians can agree upon.

EDITORIAL A LAND WITHOUT A KING By Jon Skillman “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.” Judges 21:25. When I read this last verse in the book of Judges, it struck me that America, in these days, is without her King…and now everyone is doing what he sees fit. You are probably saying, wait a minute, we’ve never had a king in America. Well some may argue about that but no, we have not had an actual monarch rule over this nation. But I submit, we indeed had a king…The King of Kings! A King who set the nation’s moral standards and America grew powerful and prosperous because of Him. Was it perfect? Far from it! But it was probably as perfect as anything could be when placed in the hands of imperfect men. And so it came to pass that America took her eyes off the King and everyone set to doing what they saw fit…in other words America went from a moral monarchy to moral anarchy. The King’s laws were ignored or rationalized away by simply redefining or renaming sin. For example: The King’s commandment not to murder, you know, don’t kill an innocent human being, was rationalized away by renaming an innocent human being as a blob of tissue, and then redefining murder as, “a woman’s right to choose.” Voila! Problem solved! In the case of homosexuality, which
the King had declared detestable and a perversion (Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:27) a quick name change from homosexual to gay, and the sanctification of homosexuality by redefining marriage, and presto change-o, it’s as right as rain. “So God” (The King) “created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27. But some felt the King didn’t know what He was doing so they set to redefining themselves as they saw fit. They renamed themselves from, oh I don’t know, let’s just use, Bruce to Caitlyn. Then, Bruce revamped himself into herself by dressing himself as herself…But the King had said, “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.” Deuteronomy 22:5. One day we will all stand before the King and He will judge as He sees fit. You may have had a right to choose… but you chose murderer. He won’t see a gay, He will see a homosexual. And He will call Bruce, Bruce…no matter how he dresses, or how badly he mutilated the body He gave him. God will not be mocked! The good news is, no one is beyond the grace of the King…but on that day, those who continue to mock the King will be.

Reflections & Resolutions As I consider the end of this year, it occurred to me that most of us reflect on the past 12 months, usually wondering where the time went and think about what went well and what didn’t. At the end of December, we start planning our course for next year and consider our new (or maybe repeated) resolutions for the new year. We all know how that goes. We start with determination and then by February (or even January) we give it up. I thought to myself, why do we even wait until January 1 as if there is some magical power or spiritual significance? The truth is that we can make a change to our life, attitude or behavior at any time on any day. I can start a good habit on Dec 13 or Mar 5. I can also begin a destructive behavior or attitude at any time as well. That is called sin and we can become entangled in it any time of year (the devil takes no vacation). This led me to think about how our life can end on any given day. We do not have a guarantee of tomorrow (or for that matter, even later today). No, we don’t need to wait until New Year’s Day to make that change because you or I may not be here by then. If there is a change needed in your life then make that change today…not Jan 1. If it is a destructive habit, you may not be
Seth Halpern - Editor around by then to change it. If you do not know the Lord then today, right now, is a good time to surrender to Jesus. By January, you may already be standing before Him and He will ask you why He should let you into Heaven. (Spoiler Alert: “I was a good person” is not an acceptable answer). If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus as your Savior and Lord, now is the time to start, not January 1st… not even tomorrow! If you need help with that decision, please contact us at the Ambassador (contact info on the front page) or the churches listed on page 3. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!
