By John Stonestreet Breakpoint.org Some acts are so terrible, it seems masochistic to talk about them. Some acts are so gracious, we marvel at them and must talk about them. Today, we felt compelled to talk about the events of last week, the horrific killing of nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Why? Because we’re seeing in those events how light overcomes darkness. How love overcomes hate. As you almost undoubtedly know, on June 17, a man described as “white, with sandy-blond hair, around 21 years old and 5 feet 9 inches in height, wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans” entered Emanuel

and participated in a Bible study led by the Church’s pastor, Clementa C. Pinckney. At about 9pm, the man, subsequently identified as Dylann Roof, opened fire killing nine people, including Pastor Pinckney. Scarcely had the news broken than pundits – both liberal and conservative – started using the shooting to further pet causes, from banning the Confederate flag to the need to permit people to carry guns in church. But, remarkably, the people of Emanuel wanted to talk about something far more important: grace and forgiveness. In an interview with the BBC, the children of Sharonda Singleton, one of the victims, told the reporter “We already forgive [Dylann Roof] and there’s nothing

but love from our side of the family.” And they weren’t alone. Stephen Singleton, Emanuel’s former pastor, told NPR that “we’re people of faith, and people of faith know that we heal. God helps us heal. This doesn’t drive us away from God. This drives us to God, and that’s why I’m here now.” When asked what his former parishioners had told him, he continued, “There are a lot of broken hearts, a lot of sorrow and a lot of healing to be done. And that’s what we’re going to work on, and that’s what we’re going to focus on because if we get bitter and angry, we just make a bad situation worse.” Thus, a relative of another victim, Myra Thompson, said “I forgive him and my family forgives him. But we would like
him to take this opportunity to repent” and “give your life to the one who matters most: Christ.” Senator Tim Scott, appearing on “Face the Nation” said that while Roof may have intended to ignite a war between the races, he brought the people of Charleston closer together. And that’s because the people of Emanuel have responded in a way that is distinctly, if not uniquely, Christian: loving those who hate you, forgiving those who sin against you, and blessing those who would persecute you. Christian ideas may no longer have power in our culture that they once had. But to paraphrase the Apostle Paul,

RETURNING TO JERUSALEM By Paula McBride Hogar Para Ninos, Vicente Guerrero, Mexico I’m returning to Jerusalem. Not the literal Jerusalem in Israel, although I sure would like to revisit there. Remember when Jesus was being taken up into heaven, he promised his Holy Spirit would come on believers and they would be witnesses in Jerusalem, Samaria, and the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8)? Bible scholars teach that Jerusalem alludes to our home location. That’s right. I’m going home. I consider myself a “late bloomer” when it comes to missions. Easing into my first “Samaria” (outside my home location) just as I entered my sixth decade was a grand adventure. A random comment— in reality a divine encounter—put me in contact with YWAM-Chico who leads week-long trips to Vicente Guerrero every month. I chose to be part of the orphanage trip. Others chose the house-building trip. That week in 2011 changed my life forever. When I returned with YWAM in 2012, God called me to serve full time, and I began ministry in January, 2013. Perhaps you’ve been reading about what God has done in and through this mission and in me for the past thirty

"You Will Be My Witness In Jerusalem And In All Judea And Samaria, And To The Ends Of The Earth". Acts 1:8
months. “How can you leave that wonderful place?” you might say. Centuries ago, the first missionary, Paul, left a comfortable ministry in Ephesus to return to the literal Jerusalem. I’m sure his struggle was intense. For three years, he poured into the lives of both Jews and Greeks (Acts 20). He suffered severe testing from his Jewish opponents, but still found a cocoon of love that embraced him. He was going to Jerusalem not knowing what would happen there. At his departure, Paul knelt with his friends, those he had birthed into the kingdom.
They prayed and wept, embraced and kissed. It is comfortable in the mission cocoon of Christ’s presence. We are surrounded by enthusiastic love of children and sweet fellowship with believers. We see evidence of God’s work within our walls and in the community. Yes, there are troubles, but they seem small. I ask myself, “How can I leave?” But then I look at the ultimate missionary, Jesus Christ. His home was a celestial palace, yet he left it willingly to take up residence in tight skin bearing the weight of gravity. Oswald Chambers writes that Jesus never chose his own circumstances, but was meek, submitting to his Father’s plans for him. Chambers
commented, “Just think of how amazingly relaxed our Lord’s life was! He was at home with God wherever his body was.” So when rumblings began in my spirit that it was time to go home, I was challenged to remember it is God who chooses my circumstances, just as he chooses yours. Perhaps that will include a short or long-term mission trip for yourself. God’s plans are always good, and one thing is sure: I will always be a missionary, whether at home or in a foreign country. My heart is enlarged to a degree I never could have imagined. Where will I serve when I get home? You will find out in the August issue of The Ambassador, Lord Willing!

INTO THE WORLD By April James
compromising the message or turning listeners off? I was curious, so I tuned in. Later I sat down with the Simple Man, Jack Sutcliffe, to get his heartbeat on why he is doing this. Jack describes himself as a simple man, with a simple love - for who God loves. The show is geared to bring some good news to a dying world, and draw back those who have left their beliefs due to church hurts. To bring the good news of Jesus, to a group of people who do not think of Christianity as good news. He explains the format changed how the message is presented, but doesn’t change the message. The secular music is screened to have redeeming qualities and tie into the message he presents. Doing a radio show was not on Jack’s bucket list and came about ironically by a call received at a wrong number. Making
“Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all. Mark 16:15 MSG Jesus instructs us to go, to get out from the safety of the church walls and into the world. What does going into the world look like? What compels us to go besides a scripture passage? Are we limited to places we can go? I recently listened to the Simple Man Radio Show on 93.3 FM which is broadcast Sunday’s from 1 – 3 PM. This is a Christian man presenting the good news on a non-Christian rock station. I wondered - why go there instead of a Christian station where people tuning in expect to hear a message about Christ? How do you present the gospel without
a long story short, he did an Easter show for the station. However, when the opportunity presented itself to do a regular show, he had to overcome fear. He started making excuses: I don’t have the right voice; never did it before; etc. The enemy was playing on his insecurities, trying to stop him from doing something God wanted. I left my time with the Simple Man challenged, encouraged and humbled. I reflected on how God doesn’t always ask our opinion about something; instead tells us what to do. And, like Joshua, He tells us to be strong and courageous. Is it easy? Well, since God repeated himself to Joshua, to be strong and courageous, perhaps it’s not as easy as we would like. A familiar saying is “Do it afraid”. Courage is not the absence of fear, but moving forward doing what we should in
spite of fear. Sometimes we have to push through insecurities to really do something amazing. If we are not courageous to step into what we believe the Lord is calling us to do, we may never know if we missed a life’s calling. Is there something stirring inside that just won’t be shaken off; a dream, a heart’s desire; nudging from the Holy One? What will become of it?
Forgiveness - Continued from Page 1 right place at the right time that the Lord puts you.” This was so reminiscent of the horrific event from years ago, the murder of five Amish girls in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. The members of the Amish community forgave the murderer. The families of the victims reached out to the widow of the perpetrator. And
against the kind of grace on display in Charleston there is no argument. We even saw it on display in Roof’s capture. A North Carolina woman, at great personal risk, followed Roof’s car until she was sure it was him and then called the police. When asked why, she replied, “I had been praying for those people on my way to work . . . I was in the
on this program then, Chuck Colson asked questions we should ask again today: “How are we working in our own communities to build cultures of grace? Are we teaching our children to forgive? Are we actively working to restore offenders and reach out in aid to victims? Are we overcoming evil in the world by good, as we are commanded to do?” And
I would add: “If evil and tragedy come our way, are we ready to respond in love the same way our brothers and sisters in Charleston have?” What happened in Charleston is a tragic reminder of the great darkness in the world. But in the aftermath we see the truth that the “light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it.”

Most of us recognize this famous question that came from Pilate after Jesus said this from John 18:37b (NIV) “…for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” So many denominations along with numerous Christians (or should I say questionable Christians) have willingly and knowingly walked away from Jesus Christ. How can I make such a statement? When you walk away from Truth, you are walking away from Jesus Christ. John 14:6 is often quoted because of the exclusivity of salvation that only comes through Jesus. However, He also identified himself as Truth. Christian denominations are voting on moral and spiritual issues that have been clear Biblical teachings for centuries. For example: • Jesus being the only way to heaven (approximately 25% of Christians say there are other roads or methods to get to heaven)
• Traditional marriage (God has not changed his mind on this issue) • Abortion (though hard to believe, a local church brought in Planned Parenthood to speak to their youth) Does the Bible warn us about deception? Absolutely! Matthew 24:24 (NIV) For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible. 1 Timothy 4:1 (NIV) The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. The solution: Trust Jesus Christ. Trust the Word of God (all of it!) – Read the Word. Know the Word so that no one (even a wayward Pastor) cannot deceive you. Build your life on the Jesus the Rock so when the storm comes (potential deception) you will still be standing!

Pro-Life Matters presented by Yuba-Sutter Right to Life Denying The Slaughter
By Bradley Mattes If Roe vs. Wade were overturned today, I wonder if people would, after several decades or so, deny that 57 million children had been killed by abortion in the United States. If they did admit it, would they whitewash the reality, pretending it was always safe and rare? January marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the massive death camp where the Nazis killed more than a million people during World War II. Auschwitz was the largest of the extermination camps, but there were
others, all built to rid the world of people the Nazis condemned as something less than human. Incredibly, despite testimony, photos and ID tattoos, some today deny the Nazi Holocaust ever happened. Others don’t outright deny the Holocaust but fudge the truth: people did die but certainly not by the multimillions. Camps did exist and people may have died there, but their deaths weren’t intentional. And that haunting diary kept by Anne Frank? It’s a forgery. At great risk, resistance fighters smuggled information about the slaughter out of Germany. The reports, passed hand to hand, were largely dismissed as propaganda. In this day of social media and the Internet, reports and photos of abortion don’t have to be smuggled out. They’re a click away. But when news of abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s butchery in Philadelphia broke, pro-abortion activists were desperate to spin the story. While they couldn’t deny what he did, they pretended he was a lone wolf, an anomaly in the world of safe legal abortion. Maybe people really want to believe

hard-core pro-abortionists celebrate “abortion on demand with no apologies.” Others may feel sad in the abstract that babies die, but it’s the law after all, and who are they to interfere with a woman’s personal choice about her own body? Butchers like Gosnell seem to revel in their depravity, but hundreds of people work in abortion facilities and somehow distance themselves from what they do, going home to their own kids as if a job is a job is a job. Like the Nazis hid behind the euphemism The Final Solution, our nation collectively hides behind such words as choice and reproductive justice. Lawmakers debate whether a child feels pain and write exceptions for rape, as if it’s acceptable to kill this innocent child but not that one. Please pray tough love for those in the industry, that they will see—truly see— what they do. Please pray courage for lawmakers. I urge you to speak up, and loudly, to your representatives, to your neighbors and friends, on social media, and anywhere you have opportunity. The liberators had to battle the enemy to reach Auschwitz. We must not give up the fight to reach hearts and minds imprisoned by abortion.

that. Ordinary German citizens managed somehow to ignore columns of emaciated prisoners marching from barracks to factory and columns of smoke rising from the crematories. While some guards reveled in their sadism, many others claimed they were only following orders. Somehow they were able to distance themselves from what they were doing to their fellow human beings. No doubt some sneaked a starving prisoner an extra piece of bread, ashamed of their role in the depravity but afraid to speak out. A few did speak out, and were imprisoned or executed for their bravery. Today, our job as pro-lifers is made more difficult by a general human desire to think abortion is sterile—both medically and emotionally—and the baby doesn’t become human until some law says so. Like the sadistic guards,

By Dan Wooding, Founder of ASSIST and the ASSIST News Service TLC is exploring modern-day miracles with ANSWERED PRAYERS, an allnew series hosted by celebrated actress and producer Roma Downey (“The Bible Series,” “Son of God,” “AD,” “Touched by an Angel”). Premiering Sunday, July 26 at 10/9c, this six-part series follows the remarkable stories of people in life-threatening situations who have experienced moments so inexplicable, so incredible that they can only be described as divine intervention. According to a news release, using a blend of heart-wrenching interviews, thrilling recreations and dramatic real footage, each hour-long episode paints a vivid portrait of ordinary people who have face extraordinary circumstances— and miraculously lived to tell the tale. Each individual’s unwavering faith and trust in the power of prayer has transformed potentially heartbreaking situations into stories of true inspiration— from a young boy buried for hours under eleven feet of sand, to the horror of a pastor stabbed 37 times, to a family that survives their car plunging upside down into an icy river bank. The premiere episode introduces viewers to two amazing families. An Indiana mother hears the voice of God
telling her to prepare for a possibly devastating storm and protect her three children. She acts on her instinct and huddles in a closet with her husband and kids—mere moments before a tornado rips through their home, hurling it hundreds of feet through the air. Though she loses hold of her family, she never gives up faith that God will keep them safe, even if she can’t. Next, in Florida a young boy suffers a horrific lawnmower accident. Distraught, his parents make the agonizing decision to have his leg amputated—but pray for a sign they are doing the right thing. On the day of the operation, what their son sees on the ride to the hospital could be the answer to their prayers and may change his life…for good. With authenticity, insight, compassion and heart, the astounding stories featured on ANSWERED PRAYERS will leave even the most skeptical viewer considering if a divine force was at work. ANSWERED PRAYERS is produced for TLC by Downey’s LightWorkers Media, a division of United Artists Media Group (a newly formed joint venture among MGM, Mark Burnett, Roma Downey and Hearst Entertainment). Executive producers
for LightWorkers Media are Downey, Mark Burnett and Tom Shelly. Wendy Hinton is co-executive producer.

12 Questions for a Six-Month Spiritual Checkup By Chuck Lawless At this time last year, I wrote a post on “10 Questions for a Six-Month Spiritual Checkup.” If you haven’t done a spiritual self-reflection yet this year, I encourage you to take time to read those previous questions and analyze your spiritual life today. Then, review the questions in this post to look at your life at an even deeper level. 1. Do you need to forgive someone? Jesus is clear that if we don’t forgive others, the Father does not forgive us (Matt. 6:14-15). So, while we may think our anger is justified, it only hurts us to stay bitter. The cost, in fact, is serious as it harms our relationship with God. 2. Does your daily talk reflect godliness? It’s hard to read Ephesians 5:4 (“Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving”) without evaluating our daily conversations. If other believers heard everything you said last week, would your witness be strengthened or harmed? 3. Does your budget reflect a commitment to God’s work? I know it sounds trite, but what we give toward God’s work really does have eternal dividends. Any sacrifice so others may know Jesus is no sacrifice at all. Would your checkbook show you prioritize God’s kingdom? 4. Do you know your neighbors and co-workers? It’s easy to be so “on the go” that we know our neighbors and co-workers on only a superficial basis, if we know them at all – which makes it difficult to share Christ with them. Even our prayer for them is surface-level if we don’t know them. 5. Do you pray regularly for leaders? Regardless of our political positions, we are mandated to pray for those in authority (1 Tim. 2:1-2).
Think about those for whom you might pray: school officials, bosses, mayors, governors, the president. Obedience here is especially important in this election season. 6. Do you read more blog posts than you do the Bible? Obviously, I tread softly here, as I’m deeply grateful you’re reading this post. On the other hand, what bloggers have to say is nothing compared to the Word of God. 7. Do you pray only when you have to? Many of us pray more reactively than proactively. Prayer is not in our DNA; it is only our response when we face something we can’t handle. That kind of praying misses the point of being in a relationship with God. 8. If you’re married, does your marriage reflect the love of Jesus for His church? Do you love your spouse sacrificially (Eph. 5:25), to the point of being willing to die? Would your spouse agree with your response to that question? 9. Are you hiding anything? Hiddenness is usually a sign the enemy is winning in one’s life. Then, the anguish of such sin is only deepened by the efforts we expend trying to keep it covered up. 10. Do you really love God’s church? Paul thanked God for the Corinthians at the beginning of his letter to them (1 Cor. 1:4-9) and expressed his love for them in his closing (1 Cor. 16:24). In between, though, he described them as a mess. Only God can give us this kind of love for His bride, especially when the
church is problematic. 11. Are you ready to quit? Maybe your church role has drained you to the point you wonder if it’s worth the effort. If your faith is being stretched to its limit, I encourage you to gather prayer partners and talk with friends before giving up. 12. Where do you most need to strengthen your walk with God for the rest of this year? Reading this post will
make no difference unless you make an intentional plan to change. Tell us what commitments you are making, and give us the privilege of praying for you. ________________________________ Chuck Lawless currently serves as Professor of Evangelism and Missions and Dean of Graduate Studies at Southeastern Seminary. Ramadan: What You Need To Know By Ryan Denison Denisonforum.org Ramadan, the holiest month of the year for Muslims, began this past Wednesday evening and will continue until July 17th. It’s considered the holiest month because Muslim tradition teaches that the Qur’an was revealed around this time of the year to the prophet Muhammad in 610 CE. So for the next 28 days, most of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims will be fasting from dawn to dusk. Each day will end with an evening meal called the Iftar, which traditionally begins by eating a date or something else sweet. The meal is often shared with neighbors and friends or taken at the local mosque with the rest of the community. The basic goal of the fast is the purification of one’s mind and body while also increasing one’s patience and generosity towards others. The Arabic word for fasting (sawm) literally means “to refrain.” As such, it refers not only to food and drink but also to things like smoking, gossip, and foul language. It is a far more holistic understanding of fasting than we are perhaps accustomed to. During the fast, Muslims are encouraged to go about their lives as
normal but with an increased awareness of the needs around them as well as a greater focus on prayer and reading the Qur’an. That focus will only intensify as the month progresses. One of the primary goals of Ramadan is to search for the “Night of Power” (Laylat al-Qadr) which is typically thought to fall in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. According to Islamic tradition, that night marks the time when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed and is considered the holiest day of the year for Muslims. They believe that God is especially receptive to one’s prayers on this night and are encouraged to stay awake in order to pray for blessings and forgiveness. Ramadan ends with the world-wide celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival for breaking the fast. It is believed that those who fasted will be rewarded by God on this day and all Muslims are forbidden from fasting in order to join the celebration. Many Muslims will give gifts, wear new clothes, and visit with family and friends as part of the festival. So how should Christians respond to Ramadan? Two thoughts: First, we must show respect for Muslims and their observance of this fast. While we do not share their beliefs, their
devotion and commitment are worthy of our respect. Moreover, Christ teaches that we are to love all people regardless of their beliefs (Luke 10:27) and his word tells us to “show proper respect to everyone” (1 Peter 2:17). That is what Jesus would do and it is vital that we do the same if we want to earn the right to share the truth of the gospel with them.
Second, pray that God speaks in powerful and supernatural ways over the next several weeks. There have been countless stories in recent years of Jesus appearing to Muslims in dreams and visions in order to lead them to salvation. This month, more Muslims will be earnestly seeking such guidance and open to the possibility of God speaking

than at any other time during the year. As Christians, we must join together in praying that he does. Ministries like 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World can offer a helpful guide to that end but the best way to begin is by simply asking the Lord how to pray. No one wants to see awakening in the Muslim world more than God so trust that he has a plan and be open to whatever role he calls you to play. So let us treat those Muslims that God has placed in our lives with respect, honoring their religious devotion while also praying that the Lord would speak to them in powerful and supernatural ways in order to lead them to Christ. And then pray with equal devotion that God would bring a similar awakening in the life of every lost person you know. Ramadan can and should be a call to prayer and intercession for more than just the Muslim world. Well over a billion Muslims will be spending the next month seeking God’s will and instruction on how to live a better life. Can you imagine what the Lord could do if the 2.17 billion people who identify themselves as Christians were to show a similar desire to improve their relationship with him? God can and is calling us to do just that today. What are you waiting for?

IN THE NEWS Armed Robber Returns Phone, Wallet When Victim Prays for Him Christian News Network An armed robber reportedly returned a victim’s wallet and cell phone after the victim prayed for him aloud. Christian News Network reports 21-year-old Shaquille Hairston was riding a bus home from work in Euclid, Ohio when a man followed him at his stop. The robber pulled out a gun and demanded Hairston give him everything he had. When Hairston told the mugger that he did not have much money with him, the man struck him in the head with the gun. Hairston gave the mugger his wallet and phone and began praying aloud for the gunman and his family. The robber then handed the stolen items back, apologizing and explaining that this was his first robbery; he had done it because
he was unemployed. Hairston invited the man to church and offered to help him in any way he could. The men shook hands before the robber left, Hairston promising to pray for him. Hairston told reporters after the incident that he prayed, “Because even if that was gonna be my last night living, I wanted to go out knowing that God was with me and I had God on my mind and if I did go, I would be with him when I wake up on the other side.” Police are now looking for the wouldbe mugger, but Hairston says he has forgiven him. “My concern has been on him, and that God will touch his heart and tender his heart so he won’t even feel that he has to do that,” he said.

Finding Freedom in God’s Perfect Peace If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that God can provide through Jesus Christ and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (ANS - June 22, 2015) -- Stephen Curry, who picked the lock to Cleveland’s defense to win the NBA championship, likes to point people to “the Man who died for our sins on the cross.” Curry was named the NBA 2015 most valuable player and led the Golden State Warriors to the championship, but he said worldly prizes don’t compare with Heavenly ones. “I know I have a place in Heaven waiting for me because of Him, and that’s something no earthly prize or trophy could ever top,” Curry told Fellowship of Christian Athletes. LeBron James seemed to be willing his way to the championship for the Cleveland Cavaliers, without two of his supporting stars who were injured. Curry was floundering with low points as the finals initially favored the Cavaliers 2-1. Then Curry, 27, started dropping his trade-mark, high-arched three-pointers. When double-teamed, he would make miraculous passes. And for the rest of the finals, the Cavaliers played a futile game of catch-up as the Warriors won each of the next three games to clinch the championship. Curry was 13 when he accepted Jesus as his Savior. “It was a big decision that my parents couldn’t make for me,” he said. “It’s been a great walk since then. He means everything to me.”
Stephen Curry With Christian humility at the MVP ceremony, Curry showed up void of all the mad-dogging swagger of other superstar ballers. He credited his wife for being his “backbone” and his parents for teaching him that studying and washing the dishes were more important than basketball. “First and foremost, I have to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for blessing me with the talents to play this game,” said the 6’3”, 190-pound point guard. “I’m His humble servant right now, and I can’t say enough how important my faith is to who I am and how I play the game.” Steph – as he’s called by his teammates – was raised in Charlotte, NC, the son of a 16-year NBA veteran. He had a brother and a sister. His mom was something of a Christian disciplinarian, keeping the sports-obsessed boys on track with firmly established priorities.

The Sinking Of America By Jon Skillman Once upon a time there was a great ship. A mighty ship the likes of which the world had never seen. She was fueled by a higher power and guided from above and she ran a true course to liberty and justice. Many great men stood at her helm and steered a course set by those who formed her. They guided her over troubled waters and through many storms. This great ship was christened The S.S. America, and she became a beacon unto the world. But it came to pass that a new skipper felt the ship had become obsolete and in need of a complete makeover. So America was ordered into dry dock to be fundamentally transformed…into a cruise ship. The shipyard workers removed every vestige of the higher power and fitted the ship with engines that ran on PC ideology and hot air. They junked out the guidance from above system and installed one that homed in on tolerance and rainbows. When all was said and done the once great ship was recommissioned the S.S. Lollipop. On her shakedown cruise the Lollipop listed noticeably to port…but that was by design. Her crew tried desperately to calibrate the new navigation system
but with no absolute value and no moral compass she drifted aimlessly. This seemed to please the skipper because he actually got to steer the boat. I know, I know…all you Navy guys and gals out there are yelling; “IT’S NOT A BOAT… IT’S A SHIP!” Well it used to be a ship but now she’s nothing more than a love boat. The maiden voyage went fairly well but a few passengers found they could not afford the fare so the benevolent skipper subsidized their passage and all seemed peachy aboard the Lolliipop. But some of the crew began to grumble saying; “Hey wait a minute, why am I bustin’ my hump
while these guys are getting a free ride.” So some crew members quit and started lounging around on deck chairs and taking advantage of the midnight buffet. Well the skipper was in a bit of a conundrum. The income from the dwindling number of paying passengers no longer covered the cost of subsidizing the increasing number of non-payers. This created a bit of a budget dilemma and the skipper was forced to borrow funds from foreign ships to keep his boat afloat (this is the origin of the phrase… Whatever floats your boat). Anyway, the skipper, misguided by a flaky navigation system sailed into
The Sea of Red Ink where the mounting dead weight pushed the good ship ever lower into the sea and she began taking on water. When the engines flooded the Lollipop was set adrift. And with no higher power and no guidance from above, she floundered and sank into The Sea of Red Ink. A single life preserver was the only trace of the once mighty ship. It must have been the only remnant from the original ship that had not been fundamentally transformed. It read…S.S. America on one side and on the other were the words...

FREE for All! What do you think of when you read the word FREE? Perhaps you think of freedom and liberty. The lack of restriction and/or bondage. Maybe you think of the best price of all…Zero! I always look for the “Buy One get one FREE” ads. I love to get something for nothing. Don’t you? The problem that comes with that is the sense that the “Free” item seems to lose value. I’ve been to garage sales where there was a box of free items that no one would touch but they would pay good money other items of similar value. I’ve even been told that when people slapped a FREE label on something there was less interest. The Ambassador has always been Free to our readers and I wonder if it has lowered its perceived value because of it. Many who read The Ambassador faithfully, and those who contribute to its production,
know the value of it- the value of having a publication that not only represents our values (no pun intended) and brings the hope of the Gospel to the marketplace in our community. Yet, I fear that there are many who don’t see the value in it. The inspiring stories, testimonies of God’s power, information on important issues and events. These seem to be lost among many, many people in the church. The value of The Ambassador is in the contents within. I believe (and have for 10 years) that each and every issue carries in it life giving words. These are not usually my words (there are many contributors) and they are NOT on the level of scripture, but rather point people TO scripture AND to Jesus, the One that all of scripture points to. Whether to encourage them through a trial, connect them to others to partner in ministry, or

to challenge them to cease compromising and rededicate themselves to following Christ in holiness, the Holy Spirit can work in the hearts of readers on each and every page. There’s another thing that is free and often taken for granted. It is much, much greater than The Ambassador - God’s gift of Salvation. Unfortunately, many people enjoy the free gift of salvation, but don’t consider what it costs. It cost Jesus, the Son of God, His very life. What has it cost you? This Independence Day we light fireworks, have BBQ’s and enjoy family and friends. Perhaps we think of freedom. I wonder if we think about the cost of those freedom fighter over two centuries ago and the cost they paid for freedom? Probably not. But the the cost that they paid and even more the cost that Jesus paid should change us. His death and
Seth Halpern - Editor resurrection that we celebrate at Easter, did change us whether we are aware of it or not. It changed our status before Holy God, cleansing us of sin, so that we can have a relationship with our Father in Heaven. I admit that sometimes I don’t place appropriate value on this Godbestowed Grace and Mercy. I want to change that this year. How about you?
