Temptation Free April James Page 5
By Seth Halpern, Editor We Christians often hear of The Fall as it relates to our fallen and sinful nature going back to our first father Adam. It certainly is a dark subject in that it reminds us of our rebellion against God and resulting gap in our relationship with Him until our restoration and forgiveness as we accept His sacrificial death as our means of salvation. Putting biblical theology aside for a moment, there is another side to “The Fall” and it is a wonderful thing. It means the coming of cooler weather, needed rain and for the Yuba-Sutter community a ton of Christian activity! Yes, it seems that almost every day in September and October is filled with Christ honoring events. There are many to choose from, and many to support. There are fundraisers, banquets, desserts, outreaches and more. You will find many of them listed in our calendar on p. 7 or you can check out the Ambassador Online Calendar (www.ambasadornewspaper.
Kidz Korner Page 9
com/ambassadorcalendar) You will also find that this current issue is Chock full of Ads with info on each one. The main thing is this: It is important to support and participate with in these events and with their corresponding ministries. We are blessed to have an active Christian community where God is moving and producing much fruit. However, it is like the old 80/20 rule in which 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. These wonderful ministries need your support and participation. You may not be able to attend every event (I love to see a more “balanced” calendar), but you can and should schedule to be a part of what’s going on in our Christian community. So, look inside, pray for guidance, and decide to be part of the 20%. Who knows maybe we will change it to the 50/50 rule and we will all share the load and the blessings of God! One way to participate in our community, is to spread the word and find a kidney for Cindy Pitter. (See article on this page)

AND CINDY MAKES THREE

Cindy Pitter attends Hope Point Nazarene church in Yuba City and is actively involved in our community with her yellow labs Honey and Ziggy. But the most notable thing about Cindy is her upbeat attitude and caring for others. You see, Cindy is on dialysis three times a week and prays that God will send someone to step forward and donate a kidney (blood type O+) to save her life.
SB 1146 Update Assemblyman James Gallagher
Page 15
Cindy often takes Honey to visit many people in a local care facility to help cheer them up. Of course they really enjoy visitors and petting Honey. Ziggy enjoys his training to be a future service dog and is very sensitive to everyone’s needs. Cindy trains dogs like Ziggy to be companions and helpers for those in need. Now you may have to adjust your glasses because there are really only two dogs in this picture. About the Lab T-shirt Cindy is wearing, it would really be something to “howl” about when God provides a kidney donor. For questions, please contact Cindy at creekside41@yahoo.com

DEALING WITH STRESS IN EVERYDAY LIFE By Josh Vanassche I once had a few major issues happen in my work life. My personal life was fantastic: healthy family, new home and stability in my marriage. My work life, however, was the polar opposite: chaotic and stressful! I felt like I had no control over anything in this area. It seemed that no matter how hard I try to win people over, stay at work late, etc., the stress continued! Have you felt the same as me in an area of your life? What does God teach about dealing with situations that we have absolutely no control over? There are many biblical examples but I want to share an event recorded in Matthew chapter 14: “…the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’ clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage, I am here!” Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come.” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But he was terrified and began to
sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him…When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.” (24-32) The disciples were in stormy weather. They were completely scared and helpless against the wind and waves. Even when they saw Jesus coming toward them, they were still scared! Do you still feel fear even when you know intellectually that Jesus will get you through? I’m willing to bet that the disciples were in one of these situations. One of them, Peter, was brave enough to reach out to Jesus in faith and cry for help. How did Jesus respond to Peter’s plea? Did he immediately stop the storm? He could have! No. Instead, Jesus asked Peter to trust him in midst of the storm. When Peter had faith, Jesus pulled him out of the waves and wind! Interestingly, the storm stopped after

INSPIRATION TEMPTATION FREE By April James Temptation Free! What a nice thought. The question is how to get there. Alas I must say there isn’t, pardon my language here but – bummer. According to 1 Corinthian 10:13 TLB “But remember this - the wrong desires [temptations] that come into your life aren’t anything new and different. Many others have faced exactly the same problems before you.” It’s attributed to Rick Warren the statement that “ since God intends to make us like Jesus he will take you through the same experiences Jesus went through, that includes loneliness, temptation, stress, criticism, rejection and a lot of other problems.” How often we admire Jesus, how he defeated Satan, outwitted the Pharisees and Sadducees, his great wisdom, the power and authority he walked in, the relationship he had with God and Holy Spirit, and then lightly glaze over the temptations, sacrifices and sufferings that contributed to who He was. Although there is no escape from facing temptation - do not abandon hope, all is not lost. 1 Corinthians 10:13 continues with “And no temptation is irresistible. You can trust God to keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it, for he has promised this and will do what he says. He will
show you how to escape temptation’s power so that you can bear up patiently against it.” So, technically speaking, the temptations we face are in a controlled environment. God doesn’t allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear; now it doesn’t say what we think we can bear, God alone truly knows what we can bear. But it is not us bearing it or going through it alone. Hebrews 2:18 states “For since he [Jesus] himself has now been through suffering and temptation, he knows what it is like when we suffer and are tempted, and he is wonderfully able to help us.” Jesus has been there and will help us through. We don’t have to ask to be tempted, temptation finds us. God provides a way out but we have to take it. He doesn’t force us to say no, turn or look the other way. Sometimes we need to resist, other times run or flee. Temptation is not sin, otherwise Jesus would have sinned, sin comes when we give in to it. There are many treasures in scripture to help us overcome temptation. Let us never think we won’t fall to temptation. Matt 6:13 and 26:41 encourages us to pray for help before temptation comes. It’s like buying insurance, best to do it in advance of the need so we are prepared for trouble.

What Lies Ahead?
By Tamera Sturgis A homemade, bulletproof coffee, made with cold brew, grass fed butter, extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil, cacao, cinnamon, vanilla bone broth and heavy cream (MmmMmm that’s a wonderful, lonely road, accompaniment) a tub of mixed nuts, the train to my left keeping pace, Interstate 80 stretched out in front of me as far west as it can go, my husband and my dogs, each nestled in their own rolling beds, and me, as I, almost effortlessly, maneuver my big, beautiful, blue, 18 wheeler, through the cool, dark and moonless, Wyoming night. These things and my thoughts, are my late night companions as I make my way through this current stretch of time. I’m unable to see what’s ahead of me past the glow of my headlights. It could be a family of Antelope, a fox, coyote, stray dog, a wreck or...nothing...nothing but the cool, mild, beautiful, moonless night, smooth asphalt and white slashes of line that look more like dots at the new Wyoming speed limits. It’s at this point that I have a decision to make. A choice. Mine and mine alone. No one can help me with this. It’s up to me. What will it be? Fear or Faith? Fear that there may be a rough road ahead, that there may be peril, danger, debris. Will I have to swerve? No, I can’t

do that, I will have to run them over...that poor family of antelope! What if it’s a car wreck? I’ll HAVE to swerve, then! Oh my!!! Hours of flying ahead through the night, practically blind, nothing to do but fret and worry about what may lie ahead. The unknown. Or can I rest in faith? Faith that the road is stretched out in front of me, as it should be, clear from debris, danger, peril (and animal families shooting dice or whatever it is that they do in the middle of the road) as it should be. I think I’ll choose faith because it’s the same as choosing peace and peace is way better than fear. All of that worry though, won’t clear the road’s debris, anyway. Or life’s debris, for that matter. Everyday, I am presented with the same choices and every day I make a deliberate effort-ed choice to pick faith. It’s too easy to run with fear, but the consequences stink because even if nothing happens, my time was spent poorly. I like the result of the effort to resist fear: Peace. Having so much time to myself out here on the road, to think, ponder and pray, one thing I’ve come to realize is this: Life is made up of little moments and little moments are manageable. Those little moments gather and turn into days. So, how you spend your moments is ultimately, how you spend your life. Since moments are little, it’s sometimes easy to give in to worry thought, but it is also very doable to take every thought captive! One thought at a time, one moment at a time. You got this! Tamera is a former Roller Derby “Queen” who enjoys an unusual life in Christ while hauling freight with her husband, Todd. You can follow her journey at her Facebook page “Trucking is Glamorous”.

The Bride Church Children’s Ministry has approximately 150 children each week. We have utilized David C Cook’s “Tru” curriculum over the past two years. Tru is a spiritually forming, familyempowering ministry philosophy that offers a vibrant curriculum and resources for today’s families. Children explore Scripture chronologically, from Genesis to Revelation, and see how God’s Big Story connects to their own story. God is at the center of every lesson, and the focus shows kids that no matter the story, God is always present. We believe that family is the primary spiritual educator in their children’s lives, and give weekly tools to encourage parents to get into God’s Word with their children and prepare them for the upcoming week’s lesson. The term “Big God Story” is used in each lesson and throughout the year as children learn that the Bible is God’s Story and that each of us play a very important part in that BIG story. So, as our year has drawn to a close we took the opportunity to ask a few of our school-age kiddos this question—
“What’s your favorite part of the Big God Story?” Here are their answers:
Cameron Burns Age 12
Madeline Lathrop Age 10
Aspen Turner Age 11
Zac Jellsey Age 12
“When it starts talking about the miracles of Jesus that seem impossible to us, but they’re not with Him”
“When Jesus brings Lazarus back to life. When Jesus brought him back to life his family was really happy.”
“The treasures we will have in heaven”
“When Jesus died on the cross to free us from our sins, so we can have relationship with Him. If He didn’t die on the cross I wouldn’t have hope.”

Finding Freedom in God’s Perfect Peace If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that God can provide through Jesus Christ and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control.
The Live Oak Festival is a celebration of the role agriculture plays in our community. No one imagined 168 years ago that Live Oak’s riches would come from the earth in the form of crops harvested instead of gold. Speaking of gold, two-time Olympic gold medalist, Ruthie Bolton, will be speaking and signing autographs. She is a devout Christian who, in addition to bringing home Olympic gold, has won state championships and a WNBA championship, and is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. But, more importantly, she knows that this life is about more than trophies that tarnish, metals that rust and ribbons that fade. Ruthie believes that this life is really a journey with and to Jesus. She looks forward to making your acquaintance. The Festival begins with a parade in our Historic Commercial District at 10:00 a.m. and runs down Broadway. Opening ceremonies will follow at noon in Live Oak Memorial Park between O and P Streets, just off Pennington Road. The Festival opens at 11:00 a.m. and closes at 9:00 p.m. Admission and parking are free! The Festival includes live entertainment, craft vendors, delicious
food, children’s activities, and a wonderful and varied car show. Prizes will be given away throughout the day. For a number of years, the Live Oak Festival committee partnered with the Yuba-Sutter Fair in conjunction with the Miss Yuba-Sutter Scholarship Competition to crown a title holder to represent Live Oak. Starting this year, however, non-profit organizations in Live Oak will do the selecting. From 2002 through 2007 there was a Miss Live Oak Peach Festival. With the changing of the festival’s name came the changing of the young lady’s title, and from 2008 through 2015 there was a Miss Live Oak Festival. Come meet the newly crowned Miss Live Oak, as this is sure to be an exciting year in the journey of Live Oak royalty. Spread The Light Puppet Ministries from The Father’s House church is returning to our stage, along with a host of other local talent that is sure to please. For more information, please visit www.liveoakchamber.org or call (530) 695-1519. Come one, come all to the 63rd Live Oak Festival on Saturday, September 17, 2016, where there will definitely be “FUN FOR ALL AGES!”

INSPIRATION
THE JOY IN GOAL SETTING By Dr. Ronald Harden, President,
EPIC Bible College and Graduate School
Nehemiah 8:10: “Go, and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” In this third editorial, of several which are focused on “Joy,” we’ve learned that the Biblical state of being, known as “joy,” is best defined as, “the assurance that produces peace, in the midst of external or internal difficulties.” The key to joy is found in our ability to focus. So, today are you attempting to walk and live in joy based upon how all of the different circumstances and situations around you? One of the things we have to do, in the midst of all of the difficulties going on in our world today, is to just take a moment to focus our attention on a goal that is bigger than ourselves and the limited scope of our view of the situation that can trouble our heart and burden our mind. That need to focus on a goal is “to drink the sweet,” as Nehemiah said. This is based on persistence, a real desire to focus on what we want to see produced, and reflect on the end result. The Bible tells us that to obey the Lord is better than
any sacrifice you can offer. In fact, it is contingent upon us to serve the Lord with gladness in that way. The joy of peace is something that God gives so freely to us! End result, a goal should be something measurable and achievable in God’s strength and help. Perhaps some of us have a personal goal to see our communication skills improve, our relationships to deepen, and maybe even an educational goal. Remember, the purpose of education should be to produce a change in life for the better. Not just a change, not just to produce confusion, but to solidify and strengthen us as we study the Word of God. In getting to know more about Him, we end up seeing His great love expressed in tangible ways as we see the goal of truly serving others for no other reason than to serve. Many times, our goals are met as we remain faithful through the pressure of affliction. I suggest that as we drink the sweet and focus on God given goals of improving relationships and of working on our inner person through education, God can help us reach our goals as we follow His purpose! The Bible tells us to give diligence to show ourselves approved unto God. God is pleased at all of those ways— visible and quiet, behind-the-scenes
opportunities to help us to help others. It truly shows our heart for Him. Let’s make sure we focus on a God-sized goal that is bigger than ourselves so we may see magnificent changes in us and all those that we serve! Dr. Ronald Harden is President and CEO of Epic Bible College and Graduate School, located at 4330 Auburn Blvd. in Sacramento, www.EPIC.edu., one of the region’s Top 25 colleges and universities and among the Top 10 U.S. faith-based colleges in the U.S., now offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs with online and standard classroom options.

“Life Matters” presented by Y-S Right to Life OUR BIRTH RATE IS SO LOW IT’S A NATIONAL EMERGENCY By John Stonestreet LifeNews.com Is America heading for a demographic cold snap? The fertility forecast is gloomy these days. We’ve talked before on BreakPoint about the fertility crisis facing China, Japan, and much of Europe—all of which face what has been called a “demographic winter.” Until recently, the United States has been an exception to this distressing trend, but this seems no longer the case. To understand why, here’s a primer. Demographers use two numbers to measure fertility rates: the average number of children a woman gives birth to during her lifetime—that’s called the “total fertility rate”—and the number of births per 1,000 women, often referred to as the “birth rate.” If the “total fertility rate” drops below 2.1 children per woman, a country’s population will shrink unless there are compensating levels of immigration. And that’s what’s been happening in the U.S. since at least 2008. Our total fertility rate has dropped below replacement levels, but has been masked by high levels of immigration in two distinct, but
related, ways. First, immigrants replaced children that native-born Americans weren’t having. Second, immigrant women had higher than replacement-level fertility rates, which, as Jonathan Last of the Weekly Standard pointed out in his book, “What to Expect When No One is Expecting,” made our total fertility rate significantly higher than it would have otherwise been. The boost from immigration, however, appears to have ended. According to the CIA’s World Factbook, our total fertility rate mirrors Sweden’s, Norway’s, and the United Kingdom’s, and is even lower than France’s. And a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control suggests it may drop more. According to the report, the U.S. birth rate has dropped to an all-time low of 59.6 births per 1,000 women. So what’s the big deal? Well, only economic catastrophe. Writing at The Week, Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry calls the record low birth rate a “national emergency.” And yet people are responding with a shrug. Here’s a case in point: the Washington Post’s treatment of the story. To the Post, the story was about policy. Young women
are postponing childbirth, and thus, having fewer children, because “Building a family, regardless of age, is expensive.” But the Post, like Gobry, acknowledges that it’s not at all clear that governmental support programs would make much difference. Places like Denmark couldn’t be more generous to would-be parents and yet Denmark has resorted to advertisements urging people to “do it for Denmark.” As Last pointed out, once fertility rates drop below a certain level, as they have in places like Japan, a kind of demographic snowball effect makes raising them almost impossible. Now don’t get me wrong: We should welcome any policy that helps people who want more children afford them. But no government policy can make people want to have children. That’s a function of worldview.
Which brings me to what Christians should think about this. As my colleague Warren Cole Smith points out, the solution is obvious: Start making babies again. It’s easy. It’s fun. It’s good for America. And it brings great joy! But you might be surprised at how resistant many Christians are, including young people, to this counsel. Twice this summer, I’ve made students cry just by suggesting that marriage and babies are biblically a package deal. Though Christians disagree about the morality of artificial birth control, we should agree that the contraceptive mindset, which treats children as optional only if we want them, runs contrary to God’s intention for marriage. The demographic winter is coming. In fact, the first snows have already fallen. Will we make what is already “disaster” even worse?
We build structures and relationships to last.

By Invitation Only By Doug Hileman I can’t begin an article like this without first saying that the main thing is not getting people to come to Church. The main thing is getting them to come to Christ. But that being said, church plays a significant role in the conversion of the vast majority of those who do ultimately come to Christ; and it is with that understanding that I write these things. Millions of people in America do not attend church, and their numbers are steadily growing. Surveys have been conducted on the subject, and when people are asked why they don’t go to church, a surprising number say that they never go simply because no one has invited them. And what’s more, they say that if they ever were actually invited to go to church by someone they know, they would give the invitation very serious consideration. Although there are many contexts and settings in which people make a decision for Christ, the majority of people will make their decision in a church. And in line with that, here’s something to think over—80% of first-time visitors come to church because they have been invited. Countless conversions are directly linked to invitations. One of the most powerful and effective ways for the average Christian to impact
the lives of others is to make inviting people to church a priority. But how to go about it? There is one method that never fails. It always gets things moving in the right direction. This wisdom is recorded in the book of Nike. “Just Do It.” How you go about inviting people is not nearly as important as just making sure that you actually do it. Most of us struggle with a natural reluctance in this area. Here are a few considerations that might help you clear that hurdle. From I Corinthians 13. Just three words—Faith, Hope, and Love. Make them the foundation of your invitations. First, faith. Nobody wants to invite someone to a mundane experience. And religion—in and of itself—can be pretty mundane. Most people are not attracted to religion, per se. But they are very intrigued by the possibility of encountering God in some tangible way. To be able to sense His presence. So work towards that end. How? You can begin by making sure to prepare your own heart before you go to church. Come with the expectation that God is going to show up. Such an attitude is quite contagious. Secondly, hope. You need to be full of hope regarding what God is doing

RESOURCES Legislative Update from Assemblyman James Gallagher The community of faith in California has come under attack once again in the halls of our Legislature. SB 1146 authored by Senator Ricardo Lara sought to regulate private religious learning institutions across the state. Specifically, the proposed law would have required religious schools to provide married student housing to same-sex couples and accommodations to transgender students if the colleges took any state money, including Cal Grants that are the source of financial aid for low-income students attending these schools. It also would have subjected schools to lawsuits for any teaching or school policies deemed to be “discriminatory”. Numerous religious leaders spoke out in opposition to how their beliefs, inside of their own churches and institutions, would be undermined by this state law. The prior versions of SB 1146 threatened religious liberty protections that are enshrined in both state and federal law, most notably the free exercise clause of the 1st Amendment. This legislation would have set a dangerous precedent by allowing the state to determine what is or is not religious, at a religious college or university. Additionally, this version would have forced religious institutions to enact transgender and sexual orientation policies that are inconsistent with their religious beliefs. SB 1146 would have jeopardized the ability of religious colleges and universities to participate in the Cal Grant program and disrupted the financial aid of California students who choose to attend these colleges and universities; they want a religious education! When I saw SB 1146 in the Judiciary Committee, I spoke out in defense of our
James Gallagher constitutional freedoms and highlighted the many problems I saw with the bill. I respectfully shared my concerns with Senator Lara. In August, the Assembly Appropriations Committee (of which I am also a member) worked with Senator Lara to amend SB 1146, successfully removing key provisions that would have infringed on our religious liberties. I have been working very hard on this issue and these amendments are a huge victory for religious freedom. I would like to thank Senator Lara for recognizing these concerns and working with us to remove these provisions. This victory in the State Assembly goes to show how strong the collective voice of the religious community in California can be when we stand together. During this process we heard from religious universities like William Jessup, students and from denominations across the spectrum including a lobby day by one of the largest churches in Los Angeles. Everyone helped make a difference. I will continue to stand on this issue and do everything in my power to protect the religious freedoms of all Californians.

Jesus took ahold of Peter and brought him to safety. Why didn’t God stop the storm from the start? Perhaps, he wanted to instill a mature faith in his disciple. It was true when this event was recorded and it is true today! The next time you feel overwhelmed and helpless in a situation in your life, reach out to God in faith. It is not always easy, and often it takes courage, as it did for Peter. How do you reach out to Jesus? You do it through prayer and petition, as well as understanding His written Word. This combination is an effective onetwo punch against overwhelming wind and waves in your life, and will also strengthen your faith.
Every one of us has experienced very stressful times and we will continue to throughout the rest of our lives. Depending on Jesus’ peace and power, in faith, will get us through! Imagine if we all practiced dependence on Jesus consistently? I believe there would less tension in our homes, work places, and community overall because we would be less prone to taking matters into our own hands (which usually results in our problems becoming even more stressful!). Vacation from God?
If you are reading this article, my wife and I are currently on vacation. (Lord willing) I wrote this in early August because I’m typically late with my monthly submissions. (Seth usually reminds me at least twice; yes, I know I need to work on this). This is the September issue of the Ambassador and the month of September is usually associated with back to school. It is a time for students to refocus their attention on their continuing education along with the needed disciplines that come with it; i.e. appropriate amount of sleep, time set aside each day for homework, limited TV, video games etc. It can be difficult getting back into a routine after having the summer off. What about us as Christians. Do we take a break from personal discipleship; reading, praying, church fellowship etc? If so, then it also can be difficult to get back into a routine. So, the purpose of this article is to challenge you (yes, me
too) to evaluate where you are in your relationship with Jesus Christ. Only you and God know the honest answer to that question. So if you have taken the summer off or any time for that matter, then today is a good day to refocus your attention on what really matters in this life and that is a solid committed, sold out relationship with Jesus Christ. Two reasons: For your personal benefit and secondly for all those who come in contact with you because your faith (either strong or weak) is contagious. Don’t wait for a New Year’s resolution to get back on track. Start today. The world is in need of our Savior and the Irish evangelist Gypsy Smith once said, “There are five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the Christian, and some people will never read the first four.” So what impression of Jesus Christ will they get from observing your life and mine? Something to ponder….
