This Asian nation is one of the first countries in the world to reconsider how to control this societal nemesis. But, aren’t you already wondering whether that story is also fake news? Since Missourians live in the Show-Me State, I wonder how they’re dealing with this dilemma. Is seeing believing? There’s a scam going around currently where people are called by someone claiming to be an official with the IRS. That “official” claims that the victim owes a bogus tax bill. is conned into sending cash through wire transfers or prepaid debit cards to settle a fake debt. The IRS has told the public time and again that they will not use this kind of tactic. In an age when pictures are photoshopped, stories are spun, and anonymous slander is rampant, who or what can you believe? Last week I received a notice by email that a wellknown bank had sent over $1,000 out of my account to a named payee. The email
asked me to verify the transaction by replying to the email. Trouble is, I don’t have any accounts at that particular bank. Upon closer inspection of the email, the bank’s logo was not authentic, and the email address of the sender was in no way connected to that bank. Now, more than ever, caveat emptor: buyer beware. Fake news is everywhere.

Fake news is not new But, fake news is NOT new. In 1981, Janet Leslie Cooke won a Pulitzer Prize for an article titled “Jimmy’s World” written for the Washington Post. It was later discovered to be fake. After admitting she had fabricated the story, she returned the prize. What persuades you that something is true? Are we all “Missourians” at heart? Is seeing that effective? (Think Photoshop.) For centuries we’ve tried to understand persuasion. Rhetorical appeals are sometimes classified as ethos, pathos, and logos, according to Aristotle. How are you persuaded to believe something?

Unfailing Love by April James www.BeyondTheSilverCoin.org The longer I live, the easier it is to admit I make mistakes, and am grateful that God’s mercies are new every day. Per Isaiah 54:10 “For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then, my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you. A covenant is an agreement, contract, or promise usually between two or more parties for the performance of some action. In this case, the promise is between the Lord and us; the action being that God’s love will remain, it’s unfailing. I’m certain we’ve all experienced the hurt of someone leaving us due to conflict, death, moving, or other reason… but Jesus said he would never leave us, and others can’t make Him leave. This doesn’t mean life is going to be problem free. it does mean He will be there with us during the hard times when others may leave us to suffer alone. It also doesn’t mean we will always feel his presence or that we cannot move away from Him. There’s the story of a couple riding in a car, sitting close to each other, side by side as the husband
drives, but eventually the space between them begins to grow wider until they are eventually sitting at opposite ends of the seat. The wife longingly says to her husband she misses the time when they sat close together – side by side, to which the husband replies – I never changed where I was sitting. Like our relationship with God, He never moves, He is right where he was, but for whatever reason, friends, busyness, job, etc, we moved away from him, quite possibly without intention or realizing it as it is happening. There’s good news, He is waiting for us to look His way; He’s saying “hey - remember me, I still love you; I still want to be your friend”. His love is unfailing. God still has good plans for us. Jeremiah 29:11 states – “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for harm, to give you a future and a hope”. I want that - don’t you? God paid a ransom to save us from the empty life we inherited from our ancestors. Do you feel a void inside? It’s the shape of Jesus and He’s the only one who can fill it. Stuffing it with anything else will not completely satisfy. Are you ready to walk in His unfailing love? He’s looking our way.
INSPIRATION Good To The Last Drop by Christy Boals www.gracefilledpurpose.com Do you ever get to the end of the day and feel like you just don’t have anything left to give? After giving to my children and others all day, by the time dinner is over I sometimes feel as though I am wrung out to my last drop of energy. I was feeling a little bad about this, after all I really love my family and want to give them my all. Also, didn’t Jesus go to the cross and literally give us His everything, right to His last drop of blood? Obviously, I am not Jesus, but I was still feeling a little guilty about how “done” I feel by evening. Then I came across Mark 6:30-32 in the Bible. In the passage, the apostles were coming to Jesus to give Him a report of all they had been doing, and the things they had been teaching. In other words, it was the end of a long day. The passage goes on to say that because so many people were coming and going that they didn’t even get to eat. I know about that! Sometimes I realize my mood has more to do with a lack of food than with anything else. What happens next in the account though, was what really caught my attention. Jesus tells them to come with
Him to a quiet place to rest, (and I would assume, eat.) Now if even the apostles needed to take some time out, I guess that means we as busy people need some rest as well. After all, it is probably my pride getting in my way if I think I don’t need something that even Jesus and His disciples needed. I have now found that if I take a fiveminute break here and there, to take a deep breath and regroup, I can come back in ready to give and love again. Rest for each of us can look different, and I do take a longer time in the morning to mentally and spiritually prepare for my day. I would encourage you to find what works for you, to figure out what fills you up in order to pour out to those you love. Whatever it is, Jesus is waiting, saying, “Come with me by yourself to a quiet place and get some rest.” “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So, they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.” Mark 6:30-32

Are You Listening? By Paula McBride Recently, while cruising the aisles of a popular store, my eyes landed on a T-shirt worn by a girl who might have been ten years old. Screen-printed in bold letters, the shirt proclaimed, “I am not listening.” Knowing school was starting, my heart broke for that girl’s teacher. Perhaps I received the wrong message. Perhaps the shirt meant that she would not listen to insults or gossip. Maybe she wouldn’t listen to messages that she is not good enough or pretty enough. Yet, somehow, I believe it means what I think. She really is not listening to messages of love, or hope, or the thrill of learning new things and experiencing new friendships. The finger pointing at that girl points right back at me. My daughter is faithful to call me regularly from her home in a neighboring state, but she sometimes asks, “Are you listening?” She can tell if I am looking at Facebook, email, or text messages while she’s telling me about her day. I am not actively engaged in what she has to say. Shame on me. So, what’s the big deal about listening anyway? Isn’t it a lost art as we absorb ourselves more and more into our media? Staying caught up with the latest text or Facebook post is more important than listening to the teacher. It’s more important than listening to those actually in your presence. It’s thinking, “No one is more important than me right now.” In a culture where many believe God does not listen, Christ followers have a
different model to follow. God’s Son, Jesus Christ was the ultimate listener, and He calls us to be the same. Why? Very importantly, God does listen to us. The Psalmist wrote, “… the Lord hears when I call to Him” (4:3) and “In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice” (5:3). Scripture is filled with accounts of the Lord’s hearing the cries of His people. Yes, you say, but is He listening? Many times, we blame God for inactivity in our lives when perhaps we’ve had the attitude of not listening to Him. Not intentionally, of course. We are just distracted. Yet, God hears our words and our tones. He hears our hearts and our thoughts. He hears our attitudes and our motivations. He hears when we’re not fully honest with him and with others. He hears things we’d rather He didn’t hear, and He loves us still. He loves us enough to hear and listen. We hear lots of things that require no response: a helicopter overhead or a train rumbling on its track. Listening is active. We have control over it using our focus and our presence. We know our omniscient God is always present. Our good God is always focused on our best. What if we were fully present in His presence? What if we were focused on His work and His ways? Could it be that our times with Him would take on a communion we’ve never known before? Tonight, when the phone rings, I will intentionally focus. You can be sure I’ll say, “Yes, sweet daughter. I’m listening! I’m so glad you called!” That’s exactly what the Heavenly Father does with me!

What Local (or National) Christian Ministry(ies) Do You Support and Why? I support Yuba Sutter Food Bank (Gleaners). The summer months experience a drought of giving every year for many ministries. When school starts, many families have little funds or jobs to purchase food after school necessities are obtained. LIFE MATTERS presented by Yuba-Sutter Right To Life Chelsea Clinton Claims Aborting 60 Million Babies Since Roe “Added $3.5 Trillion to Our Economy” Micaiah Bilger LifeNews.com If you can’t convince someone to support abortion with bodily rights arguments, try pushing the money angle, Chelsea Clinton told a group of abortion activists Saturday. CNS News reports Clinton claimed the infamous U.S. Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was a good thing, not only because it gave women the “dignity to make our own choices,” but also because it led to a $3.5 trillion boost to America’s economy. “It is not a disconnected fact … that American women entering the labor force from 1973 to 2009 added three and a half trillion dollars to our economy. Right?” Clinton said during a “Rise Up for Roe” rally protesting U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. “The net, new entrance of women – that is not disconnected from the fact that Roe became the law of the land in January of 1973,” she continued. Clinton said the money argument may convince some people to support Roe, which led to the legalized killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth. Since the 1973 ruling, about 60 million unborn babies have been legally aborted in America. “So, I think, whatever it is that people
say they care about, I think that you can connect to this issue,” she said. “Of course, I would hope that they would care about our equal rights and dignity to make our own choices – but, if that is not sufficiently persuasive, hopefully, some of these other arguments that you’ve expressed so beautifully, will be,” Clinton continued. Her comments about using financial persuasion to support the killing of unborn babies are extremely disturbing, but they also are incorrect. Just because Roe v. Wade and a growing economy coincide does not mean one caused the other. More importantly, research suggests the opposite may be true – that the legalized killing of 60 million babies since Roe v. Wade has hurt the American economy. In 1998, the late Larry Burkett, a
highly-regarded financial adviser, argued: This growing parity between the old and the young is at the heart of the demographic challenges that face Medicare and Social Security. Incredible as it may seem,by the time the peak of the baby boom generation reaches retirement age, the number of abortions since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision will equal the number of births in the baby boom. “If only one-third of those who have been aborted were available to start work on their 18th birthday,” speculated USA Today, “the demise of Social Security would be put off for decades.” Indeed, it is largely because of abortionon-demand that by the year 2030 the ratio of workers to Social Security beneficiaries
will be reduced to only 2-to-1, according to a projection from the Social Security Board of Trustees. In other words, two workers will be supporting one retiree. (When the program began in the 1930s, 42 workers supported each retiree.) Similarly, Dennis Howard, president of the pro-life group Movement for a Better America, argued in 2008 that the abortion deaths of 50 million unborn babies cost the U.S. about $35 trillion in gross domestic product (GDP). Still more research estimates a federal tax revenue loss of about $16 trillion due to the lost workforce. But even if Clinton was correct, society would be left with the question of which is more important: money or human lives.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1: “FAKE NEWS” Is it based on the source or the person telling you? That’s ethos. Impassioned pleas or convincing stories create emotional responses that can convince us something is true. That’s called pathos. Logos is a way of mounting an appeal based on “evidence,” like fact, figures, and words. A lot of us like this kind of “proof.”
Fake Good News Even the gospel of Jesus Christ has been twisted by fake news. Joseph Smith’s Book of Mormon, Jehovah’s Witnesses’ New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, and Sun Myung Moon’s Divine Principle are all examples of fake news disguising itself as “good news.” Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of people have been taken in by these and hundreds of other fake gospels. While there are many markers of fake “good news,” the most telling is the question that Jesus asked his disciples in Matthew 16:13: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” The disciples responded in the next verse with lofty and honorable titles and positions: “John the Baptist, others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” But none were correct, even though they were all complimentary. And, while all of the above examples I gave of modern-day “fake good news” have a significant place for Jesus, they do not afford him his rightful place. Jesus then asked the disciples in Matthew 16:15, “But who do you say that I am?” In verse 16, Peter claims, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” While Jesus is fully man, he is also fully God. A mystery, to be sure. But it’s the truth. Anyone or anything that gives him any lesser place is fake news.

When Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life,” (John 14:6) he was telling us that we can trust him. In other words, he’s the ethos, logos and pathos– completely believable.
Ready for the fake news I have my Bible marked in such a way to show Jesus is God to anyone who knocks on my door wanting to share their “news” with me. I don’t ignore them or send them away. While I am willing to hear what they have to say, they have to be willing to hear what God’s Word has to say. Most leave without giving me the chance. But, I am prepared. Sometimes, they question the veracity of the Bible. If you fear answering such questions, I encourage you to request the latest book in Jim Denison’s new series, Biblical Insight to Tough Questions volume 2. He gives a clear, succinct answer to the question, “Why do we believe that the Bible is actually the Word of God?” 1 Peter 3:15: “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (emphasis mine). Finally, fake news has been around since the Garden of Eden. Didn’t the serpent deliver fake news to Eve about the results of eating from the forbidden tree? “But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die’” (Genesis 3:4). And, for the first time, mankind fell for fake news. We all know (and live) the end of that story. So, for Missourians and everyone else, we have to accept the reality that seeing is NOT necessarily believing. But, be sure–believing “the way, the truth and the life” is always seeing.

A Story of Friendship, Tragedy and Trust in the Lord by Clay Maynard Miracles seem to happen when we least expect them. At a recent Christian Business Alliance meeting, Pastor Greg Mansur of Adventure Church said, “Sometimes we pray for help but don’t really expect it.” Haven’t we all prayed for a miracle but didn’t really believe it would really occur. God only knows why things happen the way they do, but what makes miracles different from chance is that we believe miracles could only happen with God’s help. About five years ago, my wife, Marilyn and I met Don & Cindy Pitter and became the best of friends. We enjoyed being together and our friendship seemed like a perfect fit. We all seemed like old friends and found out that we had lived in
the same area of Santa Cruz County years ago. Now the four of us were in Yuba City at church together. We were all Christians who believed that miracles can and do
in March of 2016 when Cindy had to go on dialysis because her kidneys were shutting down. Finding a donor with a kidney match was going to be difficult

REUBEN THE COMFORT DOG Hi! My name’s Reuben. I’m a Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog and I’m looking for some help. I’ve been very busy lately. I recently spent a week in Redding bringing comfort and warm doggie hugs to all those affected by the devastating fires – people displaced from their homes and dedicated firefighters and disaster workers. Three other LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs (Moses, Eddie, and Priscilla) joined me from Nebraska along with Comfort Dog Aaron from Napa. When not deployed to scenes of disaster (like the Carr fire or the Las Vegas shooting last year), I spend my time traveling to schools, nursing homes, churches, group homes, homebound persons, senior centers, hospitals, or scenes of local emergencies. I am also vested (specially trained) to work with veterans and active duty military and their families. Okay, now for my main point. Even though Seth had a vision for this article, I often (90% of the time) wrote about issues unrelated to CBA. However, this month is the third time in 2018 that I am writing about the CBA. There is a significant reason for this. The CBA has experienced great growth this year. Not only are we seeing in increase in attendance, but also an increase in membership. What can you expect if you join us? During the last few months, we
have heard stories on how Jesus Christ powerfully impacts lives. Here are a few examples: • Helping people overcome drug and alcohol addiction. • How a man continues to serve others even after experiencing personal loss. • How a small family business grew from a few employees to over 100 and then how God used that family business to bless and help the homeless and youth in our community. • Calling a person to become active in local government (without hiding Jesus in the process) • A man in his 80’s on a mission trip to Russia. Most importantly, we hear about those who surrender their lives to Jesus Christ, who accept His free gift of forgiveness, and recognize his sacrificial death on the cross are given eternal life. Don and I flew back to Yuba City. Later, Don got a call from the hospital saying they could do the operation. Encouraged by the news, Don made another trip to Seattle. Disappointingly, the doctors discovered the cancer had spread and determined they could not do the operation after all. Don passed away on November 7, 2016. Our focus naturally shifted back to Cindy. Marilyn helped Cindy as much as possible by driving her to UC Davis Med for appointments and just being a friend. However, things would take a drastic turn when in July of 2017, Marilyn’s
bodily systems started shutting down, so she couldn’t eat, drink, urinate or have a bowel movement. She also lost most of her eyesight, equilibrium and balance. I took her to the Rideout ER many times trying to get her admitted for a diagnosis. Each time I was told her primary doctor needed to treat the symptoms because she could not be admitted as long as her vital signs were good. There was no process to appeal even though she was struggling to stay alive. Marilyn was finally able to get an appointment with the head of the Neurology Department at UC Davis. On January 9, 2018 she was diagnosed with a rare condition called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. It attacks the autonomic nervous system that controls
almost everything and it is usually progressive and terminal. Marilyn was home with partial blindness and an equilibrium problem when she got up from bed in the middle of the night, fell and broke her left arm. I woke up hearing her yelling for help on the floor. Again, I took her to the Rideout ER and after the usual tests and an X-ray she got admitted because a broken arm is a qualifying condition. When the doctor examined her he said, “The broken arm is the least of her problems.” They performed several tests, treated her and in short, they saved her life. We wouldn’t have scripted it that way. We tried hard to get Marilyn into the hospital because of her rapidly deteriorating condition. They said no because her vitals showed well. It took her breaking her arm to get admitted. Part of me is frustrated that she couldn’t get treatment before that due to “policy”. Yet, another part of me stood amazed at God. I know He didn’t “want” Marilyn to break her arm, and I don’t know if it was His design or a miraculous, alternative method of answering prayer and eventually saving and prolonging her life. God certainly works in “mysterious” ways as the saying goes. After many weeks Marilyn was
released from the hospital and sent to The Fountains for rehab. A few months later she was sent home. At that point I became her caregiver with the help of a nurse and of course, Cindy. Cindy was a big help fixing meals for Marilyn and doing much of the housework. She would also stay with Marilyn when Clay was shopping or out of town. On June 28th of this year, Cindy received a call from UC Davis Med that they had a kidney for her. The surgery was successful, and her body has received the new kidney well. This was certainly a huge answer to a persistent prayer from many friends in our community. As for Marilyn, she is still fighting for her life everyday as we continue to pray for her miracle. The Pitters and the Maynards met in church, experienced tragedy together and witnessed God’s hand in what could be considered an unfolding of unlikely events. Just maybe, we have also experienced a few miracles along the way (Editor’s Note: Just days before this issue went to print, Marilyn Maynard passed from this life to receive her final reward and ran to the loving arms of her Savior. Please keep Clay in your prayers.).
