We are therefore Christ’s Ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20)
By Jerry Newcombe Well, it’s happened again. Another school shooting. Lives shattered forever by a lone gunman who allegedly took his vengeance into his own hands. “Our family is torn by this loss,” lamented one of the victims’ survivors. Apparently, the 17-year old shooter at Chardon High School in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio was picked on by some fellow students. He was described by classmates as a “bullied outcast.” In a recent Facebook entry, he posted his rage: “Die, all of you.” On Monday, February 27, he sought revenge on some fellow students. And now, as of this writing, two are dead, and others were left wounded. I remember after Columbine I did some televisioninterviews in Littleton, Colorado (in the greater Denver area) with some of the surviving family members of those shot and killed in the worst school shooting in our history. One young man who was familiar with the school and its environment before the 1999 shootings told me something I have never forgotten. He said that one of the killers---long before he and his comrade took revenge into their own
WWW.AMBASSADORNEWSPAPER.COM
hands---had been humiliated in the cafeteria, in front of scores of his classmates by a fellow student (a jock) who poured a milk shake all over him (the shooter-tobe). You will recall that shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold sought out to kill jocks, among other victims.
Does anybody really have a worry that the United States is becoming overly pious? None of this is to imply that any of these shootings are justified. Even if they have been bullied by classmates, these murderers are the ultimate bullies---as they play judge, jury, and executioner. Many times their victims are purely innocent, as was the case in Columbine. There were never school shootings when prayer was in school. Nothing even remotely like it. But now, for the most part, God has been thrown out of our public schools, and they have had to install the metal detector instead. Even that is not fail-proof. Virtue guru, Bill Bennett, once told me “Does anybody really have a worry that the United States is becoming overly

pious? That our young people are dedicating too much of their lives to prayer and to reflection? That teenagers in this country are preoccupied with thoughts of eternity and their own readiness for eternity?” I find it ironic that yesterday’s shooting would occur in the shadow of the 50th anniversary of the infamous school prayer decision. In June 1962, in Engel v. Vitale, the Supreme Court ruled that schools could not officially participate in prayer. Specifically, the High Court banned this seemingly innocuous prayer: “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessing upon us, our parents, our teachers and our country.” At that time, only one Supreme Court Justice dissented (and Byron White, new to the court, didn’t vote). “I think this decision is wrong,” said the lone dissenter, Justice Potter Stewart [“While Most Believe in God...” Newsweek, July 9, 1962, p. 44.].

THE AMBASSADOR The Ambassador is a free, monthly publication promoting unity and revival among the local Yuba-Sutter area Bible-believing churches. The Ambassador has a circulation of 6,000 and is distributed in local churches and businesses in the community. The purpose of The Ambassador is to pursue the great commission of Christ by making disciples and to encourage, inform, challenge and connect the local body of Christ. We believe in the inspiration and authority of the Bible as the written word of God. We believe that God exists as One, in three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that the atoning work of Christ (His death) on the cross and His resurrection is the ONLY means of salvation and the only way to Eternal Life in Heaven. ever is not from faith is sin.” Whatever is done without a conviction of its approval by God is sinful. Change your outlook on being a Christian If you think the Christian life is boring, then you haven’t yet learned how to walk with God. He will change your outlook on life. I think a Christian can look at a beautiful sunset and enjoy it more than anyone else, because the Bible says God has given us as Christians all things to richly enjoy. There is a deeper level of appreciation on our part. We can appreciate the simple things in life and find more pleasure and more fulfillment-not because we are looking to things, but because we are looking to God. Consider the words of Psalm 1:1: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.” Here, the word “blessed” means, “Oh, how happy.” So if you want to be a happy person, then walk with God as closely as you can, as opposed to trying to figure out how much you can get away with and still be a Christian. Cosmetic Theology
Is It Okay For A Christian To...? We’ve all heard the question before. “Is it okay for a Christian to. . . .(fill in blank here)?” Perhaps you are asking it right now. As Christians, we want to avoid the things that will hurt us spiritually. There are not only things that will build us up, but there are also things that will tear us down. When we start to do something, we should ask ourselves, “Does this build me up spiritually?” The apostle Paul wrote, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify” (1 Corinthians 10:23). The Amplified Bible expands these thoughts like this: “All things are legitimate [permissible--and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].” Try this test. The next time you are considering doing a particular activity, ask yourself this: Does this activity you are considering bring you under its power? You don’t want to be under the power of anything but Jesus Christ. Do you have an uneasy conscience about it? As Romans 14:23 says, “What-

One of the fastest growing segments of medical science is the increasingly popular trend of cosmetic surgery. Tens of thousands of women, as well as men, are flocking to these gifted surgeons every year to undergo some form of plastic surgery. What began as a means of helping those disfigured by war, fire, or accident, has now broadened to the removal or correction of something that these people feel hinders their overall appearance or well being. Listed under the heading of cosmetic surgery you will find the following: liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, face lift, tummy tuck, forehead lift, collagen injections etc. The list is almost endless. Ask anyone who has had this type of surgery and they will tell you how much better they feel about themselves. Surgery had removed for them their ‘problem’ and given them the appearance and acceptance they always wanted. While I don’t begrudge these people this luxury, I’m more concerned with the spiritual counterpart that I see happening in the Body of Christ. I’m referring to what I call ‘cosmetic theology’. There is a new generation of believers who seem to think that God is too old
and decrepit, and therefore greatly in need of a ‘facelift’ to enhance His image. They reason that in order to ‘sell’ God to the masses He needs to shed a few pounds, remove a few wrinkles, and adopt a more positive image. One of the blemishes that these ‘plastic theologians’ have tried to remove is the occasional scowl they see on God’s face. Nobody likes to be around someone who gets angry, jealous, or revengeful. After all, everybody knows that a smile will win you , but a frown will put people off. A ‘god’ that would send someone to hell is just not marketable. Neither is a ‘god’ of absolutes. Who wants a ‘god’ that doesn’t compromise or bend a little? If we can do away with the moral Law, and substitute it with ‘grace’ instead, perhaps then ‘god’ will be a little more appealing. Have you noticed the recent ‘Botox’ injection? God is increasingly being referred to these days as ‘Papa’. Now I don’t have a problem with God as our Father, but He is also the Judge of all the earth, as well as the King of Kings. Papas are loving, playful, and fun to hang around. Kings and Judges on the other hand are not so endearing. You get my point. CONTINUED ON PG. 7 - THEOLOGY

up and conceited. She thinks she is so much better than us.” “Oh, I see,” said Father. Another took a turn as tears ran down Sister’s face. “All the boys look at her because she flirts with them.” “It’s the way she dresses” said another. “She’s simply too alluring with her hair being so blond. I think she dyes it.” Another stood. “She thinks she’s so smart because teacher hangs up her work all the time. And when her story got published, Teacher made a big deal about it and made us all read it!” Seeing the problem clearly now, Father quickly sought to end the ridiculous trial. Mother wanted to throw them all out. Before closing with another prayer, Father stopped and looked directly at me. “What do you have to say about all this?” My eyes caught hers and I was shocked at my own reaction. I understood all too well the feelings of inferiority, and insecurity that her perfectly perfect presence brought to the surface. I began to answer. “Well, I can understand how they feel…” Her eyes caught mine and I was so ashamed. The sadness had grown exponentially now and covered her entire face. I wonder if it has ever really gone away. Suddenly, I remembered the time she taught me how to count change and helped me learn my spelling words. I thought of the secrets we shared and the inside jokes that only we laughed at. Love triumphed over envy and I finished with a rigorous defense. As the haters and their embarrassed parents went home, I took a long look at Sister. I contemplated those golden curls and her pale blue dress with flowers that seemed to dance all the way to the ground. Keenly aware that her beauty and brain far surpassed my own, I was strangely proud instead of bitter. I whiped the stringy brown hair from my eyes and decided to investigate and see just what gifts and talents God had graciously given me. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy … 1 Corinthians 13:4
At that time, Newsweek quotes Stewart as saying he couldn’t see how “’an official religion’ is established by letting those who want to say a prayer to say it. Citing several examples of U.S. institutions that invoke prayer (including the Supreme Court itself, which opens with the words, ‘God save the United States and this honorable Court’), the Ohio jurist summed up his attitude with a line from a ten year old Court decision [Zorach v. Clauson]: ‘We are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being.’” My late pastor, Dr. D. James Kennedy, once told me this (in the mid-1990s), on the subject of school prayer: “I am very definitely in favor of school prayer. I favor a voluntary, student led prayer. I believe the Jew should have the right to pray to God in his way, the Muslim to Allah, and the Christian to Jesus Christ. I think there’s a definite need for us to develop a little tolerance in this country about religion and not feel we have to throw a tantrum every time somebody prays in a way that we don’t particularly approve or like. Tolerance is supposedly this great
ideal that is so important. Our culture is always blasting people who are intolerant, but when it comes to religion, then intolerance seems to be the thing to have.” Certainly, voluntary prayer, even at school, should fall under the first amendment protection---as part of the “free exercise” of religion clause. Our schools today don’t have a prayer, yet the Bible tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. To me, this is like a baseball player who supposedly hits a home run but is called out because when he ran around the bases, he did not in fact touch first base. As long as our schools don’t have a prayer, I suppose some of them need to have a sign installed out in front: Enter at your own risk. Jerry Newcombe is host of and spokesman for Truth that Transforms with D. James Kennedy (formerly The Coral Ridge Hour). He has also written or co-written 23 books, including The Book That Made America: How the Bible Formed Our Nation and Answers from the Founding Fathers. Jerry co-wrote (with Dr. Peter Lillback) the bestselling, George Washington’s Sacred Fire. He hosts the website www.jerrynewcombe. com.

The haters, disguised as friends, were there in abundance. Their whispered rumors echoed through the halls of our small country school. The distain was intensified by the fact that her intelligence surpassed her striking beauty. She wrote stories that Teacher hung on the wall, won every spelling bee and could conquer mathematical equations with ease. Still, there was a kind of sadness behind her sea green eyes. Mother often had her assist me with my homework as I couldn’t quite get it no matter how hard I tried. She patiently helped me as I stared at her long blond curls. She never meant to make me feel stupid, but I did. Science fair time rolled around and she won the blue ribbon of course. Mom and Dad never saw the project as the latest accolade infuriated the haters so they ripped it to shreds along with the blue ribbon. Consumed by jealousy, they begrudged the talents and gifts God had obviously bestowed upon her instead of nurturing the ones He had no doubt given them. How miserable the trap of comparison. The sadness behind her eyes grew deeper one day as the parents of the haters called for a meeting with Mom and Dad to discuss recent events at school. Along with the science project, some of Sister’s assignments had gone missing and vulgar graffiti regarding her had been prominently plastered all over the walls of the girl’s bathroom and up and down the stucco walls. Teacher had finally had enough and the haters were strictly disciplined. This only made matters worse as the parents of the haters assumed that Sister must have done something to deserve it. They converged on my father’s small church prepared to prove once and for all that Sister was not as she seemed. Father suddenly found himself in the awkward position of being both Pastor to the haters and loving father of Sister who he adored. I sat close to father. He asked for love and peace to prevail in the meeting. Unfortunately, love was loudly absent. One by one, they took turns while mother sat silent holding Sister’s hand. “What seems to be the problem?” Father asked the first accuser. “Has my daughter done something wrong? Has she harmed you in any way?” “Well, I wouldn’t call it harm exactly.” said the hater. “ What then?” He gently pressed not yet understanding. “For one thing she is stuck

THEOLOGY
Continued from pg. 4 This type of cosmetic theology has been taking place for some time now without us even being aware of what has been happening. We tend to focus on all the so called positive attributes of God, and avoid anything that we deem negative. I remember as a child people having promise boxes, from which they would draw a promise from the Scriptures. Like fortune cookies, they always had something good to say to the reader. This is like Moses reading only the blessings of God to His people, but never the curses that resulted from their disobedience. Yes, I too love verses like Jeremiah 29:11 ‘For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and hope’ But God also warns His people what will happen to them if they disobey Him – ‘For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “As my anger and my

wrath have been poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. And you will become a curse, an object of horror…” Jeremiah 42:18. The leader of the nation’s largest ‘church’ openly admits he is not called to preach against sin but rather to encourage people. We all love ice cream, but a good preacher, like a good parent, will make us eat our spinach too. Well, you get my point. God isn’t in need of our help. He’s not looking for a new PR firm to help Him bolster His image. He is perfect in all His ways, and therefore, has no need for plastic surgery! CLASS Act Initiative To Overturn SB 48” by Capitol Resource Family Impact
Taking On The Spaghetti Monster By: Chuck Colson On March 24th, the masses are expected to descend on the Washington Mall for what is being labeled as “largest secular event in world history.” The ill-named “Reason Rally” will celebrate atheism, complete with live music, food, comedians, and a speaker line-up that includes famed atheists like Richard Dawkins and PZ Myers. I don’t know about you, but it strikes me as strange that people - like the members of Missouri State University’s atheist club known as the “Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster” - are gathering to revel in their shared bond of not believing in something. It might sound like nonsense to you or me, but maybe not too many Americans in the under-30 crowd. While there are no hard facts on how many young Americans don’t believe in God, we do know that atheist - or non-theist - groups are on the rise on college campuses, filled with kids who grew up in Christian homes. According to the Barna Research Group, three in five “Christian” kids abandon the church after the age of 15. Eightyfour percent of 18- to 29- year olds who call themselves “Christians” admit that they have no idea how the Bible applies to their occupation. It’s no understatement that the church has done a poor job in teaching our young people that reason and faith are not opposites, and that atheists are far from being on the side of reason. You can find on our website a chart which I use to demonstrate the various worldviews work out, and which one, Christianity, is rational. Many kids, however, who grow up huddled in a Christian environment find themselves in the university setting completely unequipped to defend the rationality of the Christian faith against the secular human-

ist worldview so prevalent on college campuses. Well, there are several Christian groups doing something about it. Last September, I heard about a new group called “Ratio Christi” - Latin for “The Reason for Christ” - that is starting up student apologetics clubs to reclaim the intellectual battleground on college campuses. The first club began at Appalachian State University in 2008; it has since grown to 65 chapters, including one in South Africa that draws over 200 students. By coming alongside campus ministries, not starting their own, these grassroots groups are filling a very obvious need. At weekly meetings, students can interact with trained apologists who give them with credible answers and deal with the crucial questions of life, like “Does God really exist?” and “Is Christianity consistent with science?” Let me share what one student said after participating in a Ratio Christi club at North Carolina State: “Ratio Christi has given me something that I did not know exists - a rational and logical defense for my faith. When I dialogue with atheists, they are shocked I have a defense. When I run into skeptics, they are overwhelmed by the amount of evidence supporting creation. Last but not least, when I talk to Christians with questions about this, they find that their belief has a strong, historical foundation that cannot be shaken.” Folks, this is music to my ears. A young, bright, college kid who gets it and who is willing to defend the faith and make the case that Christianity is truly the only reasonable worldview there is.
Senate Bill 48, signed into law (Chapter 81, Statutes of 2011) by Governor Brown on July 13, 2011, amends the Education Code to include lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons in the classes of ethnic and cultural groups which may not be discriminated against in our schools. The other groups identified in the Code are: Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, European Americans, persons with disabilities, and other ethnic cultural groups. A campaign was initiated to overturn this law and to bring the issue before the voters before it went into effect on January 1, 2012. Many churches gathered signatures in support of this referendum. Unfortunately, the campaign was unsuccessful. 497,000 of the needed 505,000 signatures were collected. Those
churches and many more are ready to take up the cause once again. The Stop SB48 coalition has filed an initiative called the CLASS (Children Learning Accurate Social Sciences) Act. This Act would repeal SB48. It advocates an accurate teaching of history. This initiative ensures that people included in social science curriculum are included for their contributions to society, not their sexual orientation. It demands that no one be left out because of their sexual preferences, but that their contribution to history is what the curriculum focuses on. The new petitions will be ready for distribution very soon. Please send an e-mail to danielle@stopsb48.com or call (916) 498-1940 x10 for more information or to express your willingness to volunteer for this effort.

Autism Service Dogs - Nor Cal Org Offers “Pawsitive Solutions” By Carmel L. Mooney
Autism Service Dogs, commonly referred to as Sig Dogs, Sensory Signal Dogs, or Social Signal Dogs are a relatively new trend in service animals as more children are diagnosed each year with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), than with Diabetes, Cancer, and AIDS combined. Autism service dogs are specifically trained to mitigate the growing number of challenges these special children and their families face. For children challenged by Autism and their families, a simple outing to a shopping mall, an excursion to the grocery store, or an afternoon errand is often a sheer impossibility. When attempted, these seemingly normal family activities often result in behavioral meltdowns, tantrums, wandering, and a multitude of dangerous behaviors which could easily endanger the entire family while in busy parking lots, in public places, and in crowds. Further challenges are experienced in public when the individual challenged with Autism is unfairly ridiculed, and judged, often along with the parents and siblings, by uninformed or ignorant passers-by who mistakenly judge the child as misbehaving, undisciplined, or being raised by “bad parents.” Sometimes law
enforcement or security are even summoned by passers-by in public places and many times they are uninformed or uneducated about Autism and its manifestations. Things are not much better at home. Often these young people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders escape during the night, damage property by head banging, kicking, or throwing objects or even themselves. Sometimes they eat unacceptable items from the home and yard. Many of them engage in repetitious behaviors both at home and in their educational environments. Parents and siblings are in a constant state of stress, duress, exhaustion, and sleep deprivation. Marriages fall apart, siblings endure physical and emotional consequences, and the families, as a whole, are taxed physically, emotionally, and financially. Recently, hundreds of families dealing with ASD have found peace of mind, reprieve, safety, security, and a new sense of freedom and normalcy due to the relatively new existence of Autism Service Dogs. These highly trained service dogs not only help to keep a child from wandering, can find a child in a crowd, can help halt repetitive behaviors, can calm meltdowns and prevent them, but they serve as a reminder and educational tool of awareness to the public that the child has a disability and needs compassion and empathy rather than judgment and ridicule. Several organizations are beginning to fill this growing niche and serve families struggling with Autism’s unique challenges. Pawsitive Service Dog Solutions (www.pawsitivesolutions.org) is one such non-profit organization whose mission is to train and partner healthy, reliable, exclusively bred, highly-trained service dogs with individuals of all ages challenged by Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities. I have wondered through life’s tears. Sometimes wandered in my fears. Left your side from time to time. Yet You insist, ‘This one is mine.’ I have doubted, fallen through. Thought perhaps, You left me too. Broken more times, than made new. Yet You insist, ‘I so love you.’ I think of all You left behind. Sacrificed, to lead the blind. Knowing all the world would do, and cannot help but Love You too. I see my life, and see Your Hand. So many miracles, unplanned. So many times The world said ‘Done,’ Yet You insist, ‘I’ve got this one.’ So Dear Lord, I thank You so. For all the times I let You go. For all the times You carried me. All the times I could not see. Every sadness, every pain, to find my Truth in You again.
‘and lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world’ Jesus.

Continued from pg 11 The cost to raise, train, and place an Autism Service Dog isn’t cheap, running between $20,000-30,000 per dog. Many organizations, including Pawsitive Service Dog Solutions are overcoming the cost barrier by providing these highlytrained dogs to their families with little or no cost to the recipient families by cooperative fund raising efforts, scholarships, grants, and donations. In addition to the wonderful support and safety measures they offer, an Autism Service Dog often becomes a friend that the child may speak to when they won’t speak to adults. These dogs are also frequently fitted with two leashes — one for the child to hold or be tethered to and another one for the parent/handler/caregiver to hold. The dog will accept commands from the parent/handler/caregiver, thus providing a new sense of freedom and safety for the child and the parents. Service dogs help increase the willingness of those with Autism to communicate with others and to make improved eye contact. All of this can happen when a child’s life is enriched with an Autism Service Dog. www.pawsitivesolutions.org Co founders Carmel Mooney and her husband Bob both attend Bayside Plumas Lake. “God has really laid a burden on our heart for special families affected by Autism. It’s our prayer to offer a blessing of assistance to these challenged families.” Pawsitive Service Dog Solutions is currently in need of volunteer puppyraisers who will foster one of their current puppies in training for service work. All expenses are paid by the organization. Individuals willing to offer 8-10 months of love, affection, and socialization to a puppy are urged to contact Pawsitive Service Dog Solutions: info@pawsitivesolutions. org

Redefining God by Dave Kugelman
“My God would never send anyone to hell!” I have heard this quoted a number of times from a variety of Christians as well as non-Christians alike. We live in a Christian culture where His “followers” continue to redefine Him. They say things like: • God does not condemn homosexuality • God does not condemn fornication (sex outside of marriage) • God is pro-choice (had a man tell me that he was a Christian and if Jesus was here, he would certainly support abortion) • Even though Jesus Himself said He was the only way to heaven, approximately 50% say otherwise We know God loves us and wants a relationship with us but the Bible is also clear that God has standards. Our efforts to “make Him nicer” isn’t doing anyone any favors. People need to know that it is sin that is destroying their lives and
the lives of their families. But we also need to tell them that there is a remedy for their sins and His name is Jesus. We can make it clear when witnessing that God loves them but He also says some very sobering things in His word. For example, refer back to my headline. Then read the following passage: Luke 12:4-5 (NIV) “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” That, by the way, is a quote from the politically incorrect Jesus Christ himself. Let’s stop redefining God and present him as he presents himself in the Bible. The Holy Spirit will do the rest! David Kugelman is the president of the Christian Business Alliance which meets each Tuesday at noon at various locations.

CALLUSES AND BURRS
AS WE SEE IT
By Jon Skillman
all kinds of evil. Children murdered by the very person they turn to for protection. Children sexually abused by those we entrust to teach them. And parishioners led astray by their Shepherd. The vile content of prime time TV and a general abandonment of morality. Could these things have callused my heart and kept it from feeling pain? As much as I wanted to believe these outside influences were to blame… I couldn’t. The more I thought about it, the more I realized the calluses on my heart had formed from within. It always hurts when God humbles me. He saw the true cause and was now making it abundantly clear. I have, and it pains me to admit it, a judgmental nature. This nature, if not held in check, tends to produce an arrogance that rubs my tender little heart the wrong way. So here’s the deal. I judged Whitney to have made some bad life choices. I determine her lifestyle to be decadent and not of my liking. In short, my arrogance says she brought it on herself and was therefore, unworthy of any sympathy or compassion. Ouch! I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful when God humbles me. When he shows me the error of my ways and the truth of His. Yes it hurts, but in the end it’s a good hurt… kind of like a burr on a beautiful summer day.

Teach Your Children Well Seth Halpern
After being shocked recently by news of a Planned Parenthood campaign to indoctrinate public school children with sexual material, I contacted every private Christian school that I knew of in the area. I invited them to promote their program at a significantly reduced rate in an effort to help shelter our kids from the bombardment of ungodliness that is hurled at them day in and day out. (Only one school took me up on that offer. You can find their ad in this issue). By the way, I made this offer a week or two before the recent school shootings in Ohio. Read the cover story for more on that tragedy. We are still fighting against the law that compels public schools to emphasize the homosexual lifestyle in their textbooks. I was a teacher earlier in my career and quite frankly, I admire (and sympathize) with today’s teachers. Public school teachers have a tough job. Not only do they face the challenge of teaching children who don’t want to
Seth Halpern - Editor learn from families that don’t encourage learning, but they face the political agendas and laws that bind their hands to speak truth and life into the very kids that need it. Before you send me an opposing email, please understand that I am well aware that “good” public schools with wonderful and Godly staff do exist. However, they are getting more difficult to find and more opposition from politically correct monitors. I simply suggest, encourage (ok, truth be told, “I urge you”) to consider a school for your children where they are free from political agendas and destructive mandates and spend their time learning to read, write and know the love of God!

I remember those days of my youth when the end of school signaled the end of shoes. It was like baring my soles to the joys of summer. But those first barefoot steps were taken on tender feet… feet that had grown soft in the protective confines of thick-soled Keds. But with each passing day, calluses formed to keep the roughness of the earth from agitating the sensitive nerves on the bottom of my feet, and by summers end I believed I could have walk on burning coals. Fortunately, I never had the urge to do so. Calluses are yet another wonderful feature God has built into our wonderfully designed bodies. Think about it, instead of wearing out, our skin actually gets thicker through use. Have you ever looked at the hands of a carpenter or the knees of a carpet layer. They wear the gloves and kneepads of God… the calluses that protect the sensitive flesh just beneath the skin… calluses that simply grow without our bidding or even our notice. So what is it that caused me to meditate on the virtues of calluses? Well, when the news of Whitney Houston’s sudden death reached me, it didn’t reach my heart. There was no feeling of sympathy, not sense or loss. What the heck is wrong with me? Where’s my compassion? Why is my reaction to her death so callous? I thought about the twenty-four/seven news cycle, the constant exposure to
