INSPIRATION Thanks For Nothing by Paula McBride Rosa has nothing. Well, nothing in my American middle class way of thinking. She is better off than some in that she has a two-bedroom concrete block home, electricity, and running water. She has one tattered easy chair, a four-burner hot plate perched on a scarred wooden table, one ancient iron-framed single bed, and one double mattress on the floor. The outdoor bathroom has a flush toilet, but the shower is a hose from the ceiling that sprays into a small plastic tub. Yet, Rosa’s toothless smile outshines the flowers edging her grassless yard. During my brief visit to her home in Nicaragua, the ninety-three year old grandma had gnarled arms continually lifted in praise to the Lord. She expressed heartfelt gratefulness for the box of food we gave her, and for the training her granddaughters received at the Compassion International project nearby. When asked what she wanted most of all, her desire was for her children to walk close to the Lord. Here in the States, my friend has nothing. Following the Lord’s call to minister to a seriously ill loved one, she sold her household furnishings. She put a few boxes of family memorabilia in storage and traveled to another state to give herself and her unemployment check for the care of her friend. These are two women who have very little of what we consider necessities of life, yet they have everything in the eyes of the Lord--a consuming love for Him and an irrepressible spirit of thankfulness. I confess that I am attached to the things I possess. I give thanks every day for the benefits that make life easy. Could I be thankful if my worldly resources were lost? The truth from God’s Word is that

our worldly resources will be lost. In His Sovereignty, God blesses His children with varying degrees of material wealth as will benefit His kingdom. But He wants absolutely nothing to attract us more than we are attracted to Him. Augustus Toplady, the writer of the hymn “Rock of Ages,” understood this when he wrote, “Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling.” From God’s perspective, the “nothing” of empty hands is His opportunity to fill them with what really matters. The Apostle Paul once had much of what he thought was valuable, but he chose to count it as nothing so he could know Christ. Paul’s focus changed, and he found the ability to praise while imprisoned, serve in spite of shipwreck, and witness instead of worry. This month we are thinking about what we have and thanking God for His bounty. Have we considered being thankful for what we don’t have? When our possessions, health, security, and reputation are poured out to God, we are free from anxiety and fear. We are filled with trust in a God who sees the sparrow fall and who clothes the lilies of the field. When God is our everything, we can be thankful with nothing. Happy Thanksgiving!

We’re...DIFFERENT by Elisabeth Quick From all sides, secular life is abrasive. Sometimes it feels as though your morality is being scrubbed down with one of those horrible wire brushes. Sometimes it feels more like you’re being pounded by a jack-hammer. People you love and respect pulling on you to make poor decisions, your favorite show taking a turn to the risqué, the beat to that new song is cool except for the raunchy lyrics but everyone is listening to it; sometimes it’s hard to be a sheep in a world of wolves. Sometimes it’s OK to take time and cry out to God. This is nothing new. Thousands of years ago, when God’s chosen people were trying to make it to their promised land, they were a little nervous about how they were going to get there. And from a secular mindset, they had good reason. They were going to have to cross through borders of enemies and face big, mean, scary peoples who did all the things they weren’t supposed to do. God’s people were going to look stupid. They were going to be outsiders. They were going to smell different, eat different, look different. They worshipped a god who wasn’t on the Top 10. But God told them, ‘don’t be afraid of them, I’m bigger, stronger, faster. I’m fighting for you. Don’t give them a second thought. I’ll get you through this.’ (Deuteronomy 3:22). Do you ever have moments where it feels impossible? I know that I

feel discouraged when we have open discussions about faith in my philosophy class. The same information I hear and marvel at God’s big-ness, they suck Him right out of it. It is as if they can’t see the golden thread of Divinity that is woven through everything known and yet to be discovered. God let me kick this around for a few days before whispering Romans 8:7 to me. With that verse, I felt just a little piece of His heart. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God, not only does it not submit to Him, it just can’t. This realization is saddening. Once again we are reminded that there is a serious need for us to shine as bright and pure as we can through Christ. How can we do that if we’re blending in with the wolf pack? We need to be sheep-ish, in a biblical way. As the holidays approach, try your best to stay true to Grace. Check your materialism. How is your heart? Remember we are set apart, so we’re going to be different. How different are you?

Overwhelmed by Joe Grinnell I was working on the stucco phase of a house in Beverly Hills. I walked outside to get some tape to keep masking. There it was. A new Porsche 911. Wow, what a car. But I immediately went into panic mode, the car was parked next to the stucco mixer and it was running, splashing all over. The owner quickly moved it, as he viewed me nearly jump on the car to protect it. I got his attention, I saved the car. The owner of the car also owned the house and we became friends while working on his home. Then one day I asked him what kind of work he did? He answered, “Oh we don't do that in my family”. Immediately “the deer in the headlights” look. I was overwhelmed, I couldn't comprehend that answer, my mind couldn't grasp it. A new home in Beverly Hills, a brand new 911 Porsche... “Oh we don't do that in my family”. I quickly adjusted however, and asked what color was going on the next wall. I never brought it up again. Have you ever been overwhelmed? Life happens! The good, the bad and the ugly. But what has overwhelmed me more than anything else in my life is the love of God.

To think that God gave His Son to die for me so I could live forever in heaven and have abundant life now, overwhelms me. To think that Abba Father was waiting for me to open my eyes this morning so He could begin to lavish His love upon me, overwhelms me. I know me, sometimes I don't even like me, let alone love me. But He does! He gives us this day as a present (the present) for such a time as this, so that we may be surprised and catch Him in the very act of being 100% guilty of pouring His grace out to us even in midst of storms. He is the Great initiator of love,. We are responders, freely receive, freely give, we need to redeem the time right now to be overwhelmed with His present purpose and love for us. I saved the Porsche. Jesus offers to save you and me and the human race. I protected a perfect car with my body of partition. He saved a sin dented wreck (myself) by enduring His passion and taking the nails in His hands and feet for me. The stucco splashes were quickly washed off the prized possession but He took our dents, fears, bondages, addictions, issues, hang-ups and habits into the tomb with Him and left them there after He arose so we could have the hope of a new life now. I'm overwhelmed. I may not ever hit sixth gear in a 911, and I got some miles on this present body I live in, but I've got a new everlasting, perfect body on order. I'll get it when Jesus comes back for those who were once wrecked with sin but are now being made whole by His great love. 2 Cor. 9:15. Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift. I'm overwhelmed.

Freedom, Schmeedom Religious Liberty On Trial By: Chuck Colson joy such so-called “freedom of worship.” Freedom of religion, however, means the right to live out your faith in private and in public. Well, not long after Clinton’s speech at Georgetown, the Administration said it would no longer defend or enforce the Defense of Marriage Act — that’s a federal statute! Earlier this month, the administration announced it would not renew a $19 million contract with Conference of Catholic Bishops to help sex trafficking victims. Why not? Well, we do know the ACLU sued the government to terminate the contract because the Bishops Conference wouldn’t help sex-trade victims obtain abortions! And recently, the Department of Health and Human Services issued regulations that would force all employers — religious or otherwise — to purchase insurance that covered contraception and other “preventative care.” Could that be true? True enough that the President chirped “Darn Tootin’” at a political rally. What is the Administration up to? The Catholic Bishops are alarmed enough that they are forming a committee to press the Administration on its overtly hostile approach to religious freedom. This is why everybody listening to me today has got to read and sign and get friends to sign the Manhattan Declaration. If you have read it already, go and read it again. We’ll have a link for you at BreakPoint.org. I think there’s good reason to fear that if we fail to raise our voices now, we will be forced into civil disobedience. It’s time to rally our forces. Christians should not have to compromise their faith to remain free and equal citizens. Again and again, we must make clear, as the Manhattan Declaration states, we will under no circumstances ever render to Caesar what belongs to God.

Can the government really tell a church whom to hire as a minister? That frightening question is very relevant today. As reported by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, The conservative Scalia and the liberal Kagan seemed bewildered by the Obama Administration’s unbelievable assertion that there should be no “ministerial exemption” for churches when it comes to hiring. That’s the issue at stake in the case Hosanna-Tabor Church v. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. Who, in the end, decides who is a minister and who is not? A church, or the government? In his excellent opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, Stanford’s Michael McConnell, a former federal judge, notes that for “40 years lower courts have applied a ‘ministerial exception,’ which bars the government from any role in deciding who should be a minister. “But,” McConnell continues, “the Obama Justice Department has now asked the court to disavow the ministerial exception altogether. This would mean that, in every future case, a court — and not the church — would decide whether the church’s reasons for firing or not hiring a minister were good enough.” Folks this is frightening. And I can’t but help wonder if there’s not a deliberate pattern here by the Obama Administration to restrict religious freedom. Now, I’m not given to conspiracy theories, but how else do we interpret the Administration’s actions over the past couple of years? Remember last year, I warned something was up when Hillary Clinton proclaimed that “freedom of worship” was a top U. S. priority. As I explained then, “freedom of worship” and “freedom of religion” are not interchangeable. One allows you to worship any way you want in private — even Chinese citizens en-

Now What? By the time of this writing the “Saving Us” event is behind us. Many of you who are reading this article were in attendance that night and personally signed the “Yuba Sutter Commitment to be “PURE.” Thanks to all of you who committed to be PURE for Christ. For those not in attendance, details of the PURE commitment are outlined below. Please consider joining with other believers to be intentional in impacting this region for Jesus Christ. Prayerful I will commit to regular prayer for not only myself and my family but for my neighbors and community to experience revival. I will pray for opportunities to lead others into a relationship with Jesus Christ the only One who can deliver us from our current situation. United I will commit to finding ways to get beyond the barriers of denominational and individual church “walls” and enter into meaningful fellowship with the larger Body of Christ. Repentant/Righteous I will commit to repenting of my past and present disobedience to Christ and by His Spirit will seek to be obedient to His Word (the Bible) inasmuch as I am able. When I fall, and am convicted by the Holy Spirit, I will once again repent, knowing that this not only frees me but serves as a role model to other believers and unbelievers alike Engaged I will commit to becoming engaged in Kingdom building through not only prayer but action. I will partner with organizations in our community such as the Christian Business Alliance and The Ambassador that promote the biblical values that our nation was founded upon. I will lend support for ministries, churches, and individuals who seek to glorify the Lord, as I am directed by God. I hereby sign this declaration on this day ____/____2011 ____________________________________________ Signature

By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35 Our love for one another can be clearly demonstrated by how we serve and help one another. As most of you know, our dear friend and brother in Christ, Seth Halpern recently had a heart attack and a subsequent triple by-pass operation. I’m pleased to report that the surgery was a success. He is now going through the slow and painful recovery process. (Note to Seth: Many of your friends have emailed, called and sent me text messages asking about the status of your health. It is obvious that you are truly loved by so many in our community. I am including myself in that

group. Once you recover, I will resume my sarcastic mode of communicating with you, but for now, only kindness. Seth and I meet weekly to discuss a variety of issues, from personal to business. One recurring topic is the stress that Seth and Angelica feel each month hoping and praying that enough revenue comes in to pay bills. God has blessed them by meeting monthly expenses. Seth has to make new sales calls each month in order to generate the necessary revenue. Since Seth’s recovery will be two to three months, I am personally asking on his behalf for his current supporters to submit your monthly payments in a timely fashion and for others who may not be supporting the Ambassador to consider some type of monthly support. Thanks for caring.

RESOURCES Does God Want Christians To Be Happy? Christians often ponder this question because it is popular to proclaim that God is more interested in our holiness than in our happiness. However, is it really possible to separate these two notions? In a very practical sense, one wonders how attractive Christianity would be to the world if Christians were curmudgeons! But Scripture seems to suggest that we of all people should be happy. In fact, the English word “blessed” translates the New Testament Greek word makarios, which means “happy.” In his Sermon on the Mount, none other than Jesus himself described as “happy” those who live faithfully in the Kingdom of God (See Matthew 5:1-12). It is interesting that ancient Greek philosophers for several centuries prior to Christ wrestled with this very issue. They were in search of the key to eudemonia, that is, happiness or human flourishing. They concluded that it was arête and phronesis, that is, virtue and practical wisdom respectively. But they were interested not in a person who just does good and moral things, but in a person who was indeed internally virtuous. Only such a person could be said to be happy and flourishing. So far the Bible would agree. But unfortunately, these thinkers did not entertain a doctrine of sin and, therefore, sought in futility to achieve this end through human effort alone. The beauty of Christianity is that it completes the puzzle by providing the enabling power to achieve such a condition, and it does not restrict this gift to phi-

losophers, but offers it to all people. This power resides in the person of the Holy Spirit who is given to and resides within all those who believe. It is the power that raised Jesus from the dead and that now also works within us, enabling us to become actually “holy” persons, that is, truly internally transformed human beings. Therefore, it is true that God is infinitely concerned about our obedience which leads to holiness, our inner transformation and progressive deliverance from the power of sin. But this is also the very path to happiness and human flourishing, so God must be infinitely concerned about our happiness as well, so concerned that he has graciously provided us with the power to achieve it! Hence, happiness in a biblical sense is not about the nature of our circumstances or the stuff we possess, but about living faithfully in the Kingdom of God. By so living, we learn to enjoy those things that God gives us in life as gifts without clinging to them as necessary components of our eternal well being. In addition, we learn that we need not fret when the wicked prosper, or when hard times and suffering come our way, but in the midst of these challenges, we may instead continue to delight ourselves in the Lord, who works all things together for the good of those who love him and who are called according to his purpose, and who gives us the desires of our heart (Romans 8:28; Psalm 37:1-4; Proverbs 13:12). One In Four Believers Are ‘Christians In Name Only,’ According to Survey Changing the Face of Christianity Inc., a non-profit corporation dedicated to reversing negative Christian stereotypes, has released the results of a quiz designed to determine how well Christians live the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through the quiz, the organization found that one in four self-proclaimed Christians admit that they do not live according to Christ's teachings. The anonymous assessment consisted of 10 multiple choice questions that returned a score to the participant at the end, which then indicated to that participant if he was 'Far from Christ," a "Worldly Christian," "A Good Christian," or a "Spiritually Mature Christian," which was the highest rank possible. The responses, which were collected over a seven-month period from January 2011 to July 2011, indicated that 23.7 percent of Christians in the pool of over 2,000 questioned were classified as "Worldly Christians" or Christians in name only, as defined by R. Brad White, the founder of Changing the Face of Christianity Inc. "When posed with a real world situation which tests their faith, they tend to do what the rest of the world does, instead of living as Jesus instructs," White said

about "Worldly Christians." "To be clear, these aren't 'bad' people. The score results suggest they think much more about themselves than they think about God and other people. Reading the Bible and praying aren't a common practice. These are people that you would probably be surprised to find are Christian, if it weren't for the cross around their neck. These people are in the sweet spot of where we need to do our work. We are here to walk along side them, love them, educate them, mentor them, and guide them into living their faith through their words and actions." White said this is the group his organization is particularly eager to help to put them back on the path to righteousness. "We are currently piloting a revolutionary way of 'doing' Christian small groups, that helps Christians live their faith; a sign of Christian maturity," he said. "Instead of just doing Bible study after Bible study, our small groups platform gets people studying, serving, praying, praising, and enjoying their lives together." RESOURCES “I Am/You Are” Apologetic For Success by Christian Biscotti

Christian DVD Review “INDOCTRINATION” INDOCTRINATION is a very powerful documentary that should be seen by every Christian. It follows a homeschool family as they try to answer the question whether it’s better to homeschool or go to public school. Interviews with Christian teachers, principals, and students demonstrate how toxic the environment is in the public schools. Documentary footage of elementary school students being taught homosexuality is frightening. The head of the National Education Association says it’s not about the children, it’s about power. Of course, almost every local teachers union in the United States is affiliated with the National Education Association, so every local teachers union has been corrupted in one way or another by its radical leftist worldview. Because of the power of these unions, many states now require all teachers to indoctrinate students with leftist ideology promoting all kinds of immorality. INDOCTRINATION is well made. It has suspense, humor, and

surprises. It includes a timeline of the attack on Christianity going back to John Locke and then Jean-Jacques Rousseau that’s eye opening. INDOCTRINATION is a must-see movie. Its topic is one of the most important topics of our day. INDOCTRINATION is highly recommended.

The year 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of the completion of Mt Rushmore National Memorial, which began on October 4, 1927 and was completed on October 31, 1941. Luigi Del Bianco, an immigrant from Italy and Lincoln enthusiast, carved our 16th president’s face and knew every bump, wrinkle and spot on Lincoln’s forehead, nose and jaw. Luigi’s son, Luigi Jr. (Lou), remembers vividly his father’s consistent words of encouragement, especially during the 14 years it took for his father to finish his job at Mt Rushmore. Luigi would look into his son’s eyes and say, “I am Luigi, you are Luigi”. And with these words Lou felt this incredible bond and belonging to his father. It gave him hope, vision and connection to something bigger than himself - his roots, his destiny, his calling. Genesis 1:26-27 shares the same words from God the Father to us, His children, “Let us make man in our image…” (vs. 26). In essence God says, “I AM” therefore “you are”. This truth alone, from the beginning of His Story, has great meaning and freedom for us. We are made in God’s image; we are His children; we reflect Him in our mind, soul and body. Therefore, we should be like God; holy, righteous, creative, optimistic,

winsome, free, loving, powerful, beautiful, gentle! Because we belong to God we should feel His closeness, sense His delight in us and hear His voice (John 10:27). Because we belong to God, life and death is now put in context along with everything we experience here on earth. Our outlook, ideology, paradigm, attitude and hope all derive from God’s words to us, “I AM” (Exodus 3), “I love you” (John 3), “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). I am going to use this truth with my girls and our new son, Lincoln Harrison, from now on. I’m going to look into my daughter’s eyes, and into my son’s eyes, and say to them, “I am Biscotti, you are Biscotti”, “I am your dad, you are mineyou belong to me…”. I want my children to always know my love and delight in them and in the same way I want my children to always know God’s love and delight in them- that His very presence is in us and He is with us. As Lincoln’s face is stamped into every penny and his image is on every $5 dollar bill, so we are stamped in God’s image. This truth alone should get us out of the funk that we often get into and back on track to succeeding and overcoming (Rev. 3:21) in this life and as we prepare for the life to come.

The Twin Cities Rescue Ministries (TCRM) is a place where the body of Christ becomes one working together in unity. Jesus said in John 17:21 that “they all may be one, as thou father art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”(KJV) I have discovered that through need and suffering the body of Christ rises up and comes together to meet the challenge. We, at TCRM recently experienced this when we were able to house and help six men who lost nearly everything they had through the fire in Marysville that destroyed their motel. It united the community and us at the Mission. We did everything we could to help them with food, bedding, clothing, showers, support, counsel, rides, etc., and the greatest thing of all, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My hope was that through this disaster each man would have the opportunity of being born again and becoming new creations in Christ. We, at TCRM are blessed to have over 25 churches partnering with us. The Gospel is being preached every night, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. We have alter calls following the chapel services and always a hearty meal served to all. We have daily Bible studies at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. We transport over 10 men every Wednesday to a local Celebrate Recovery Program, with more road trips in the future to local recovery meetings. We have chapel service every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. with awesome worship and dynamic preaching of God’s word. Brunch follows and all are invited to stay and fellowship. One of the purposes of the Mission is to help out eve-

ryone in need with what we have to give and connect the dots for them through the resources available in our blessed community. We offer free GED study classes at Marysville Adult School, plus bible study courses, day labor for contractors and people needing help with different projects. We have established mandatory drug testing for staff and kitchen help with zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use on Mission property. Those who test “dirty” or are under the influence of alcohol or drugs have disqualified themselves from our program and are promptly escorted off the property. On any given night, we have 25 – 40 men staying overnight at the Mission. Recently two women waiting to get into the Salvation Army Depot stayed the night in our dining room on cots after being touch by God. Both are now in the program at Salvation Army. God is also raising up young evangelists and teachers of His word hungry to preach. We take groups to the Well Ministry of Rescue in Chico and also Oroville Rescue Mission and share our testimonies in God’s word. The needs are many as you can imagine with over 100 meals prepared daily. So if God lays upon your heart to help us here, we will gladly receive it with hearts of thanksgiving. Speaking of Thanksgiving, our annual Thanksgiving Banquet is coming up soon and all are invited. It starts at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2011. May God bless us with hearts of thanksgiving and liberality this holiday season, all for the glory of Him who died and rose again to give us new life. Occupy God’s Kingdom

AS WE SEE IT

By Jon Skillman

It seems to me that the “Occupy Wall Street” protests lack both direction and defined goals. I believe there are two main reasons why this is true. First: Like most protests, it is being hijacked by a number of opportunistic groups bent on advancing their own agenda. This causes the movement to pull in different directions and clouds its original intent. For example: Anarchists seize on any opportunity to create chaos. They’re usually the ones who start kicking in windows, looting stores and setting cars afire. Their goal is to, “Bring down, ‘The Man,’ man.” Now this is in direct conflict with the goals of the socialists who depend on, “The Man” to finance their Robin Hood ideology of wealth redistribution. They’re usually the ones carrying the signs reading, “Where’s My Bailout?” Then there are the Marxists whose sole purpose is to collapse capitalism and replace it with… something… or… maybe not. Now, if we add in some unions and a few community organizers, we’ve got ourselves a pretty volatile mixture. And, if it’s stirred up with a little resistance from, “The Man,” we’ve got the fixings for a nice little riot. The second reason why I feel the Occupy Wall Street movement lacks credibility is, its finger of blame isn’t pointing to the root cause of its discontent. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m a little ticked off too. My nest egg has been severely

14

The Ambassador

cracked, and all the Merrill Lynches and Goldman Sachs can’t put it back together again. But I don’t blame Wall Street, or the bankers. I see them as the result of, not the reason for. When America, as a nation, turned her back to God, she twisted herself off the very foundation upon which she was built. With no accountability or responsibility to God, (fear of God) man was left to follow his own will. This is rarely a good thing. Without God’s standards of trust, honesty, honor, integrity and character a free market, let alone a free society cannot exist. “Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world cause by evil desirers.” 2Peter 1:8 So here’s an idea: Why don’t we move to, “Occupy God’s Kingdom?” The direction and the goals will be crystal clear because no self-respecting anarchists, Marxists or socialists would be caught dead at a rally for God. Oh a few environmentalists might show up because God did grant man stewardship over the earth. Unfortunately, many environmentalists have chosen to worshiper the earth rather than its creator… those we’ll give a canvas grocery bag and an organic fig and they’ll be as happy as an endangered newt.

Thankfulness James Halpern (interim editor)

Thankfulness can come from horrifying situations. It can stem from tragedy, and grow from pure, unadulterated sorrow. Thankfulness was usually brought to my attention once a year on a gorgeous November day, with the smell of turkey in the air. The routine telling of what we were thankful for, only was preceded by the common side effects of enlarged waistbands, drossiness and being down right full. This November would bring on a whole new meaning of thankfulness that I experienced the previous month. As most of you know, or will now know, my father, Seth Halpern, was in the hospital. What seemed to us a s a minor heart issue was now being assessed as a heart attack and multiple ones at that. After enduring the news and reviewing our options, surgery seemed the only possible solution. Three long days and a triple triple bypass surgery later, I am writing this article thankful as I can be that God spared my father’s life. As I have never had a close emergency within the family. The days were stressful and challenging, though I would never truly admit it. The only one true thing that had possibly kept me afloat was the grace

Seth Halpern - Editor and mercy my God showed my father, and in turn, showed me. Coming from the now rare instance of both parents being present during childhood, I have always seen my dad as a great man. Not some one I have agreed with all the time, but a great man nonetheless. The wisdom and passion that I’ve seen God give him, is truly amazing and inspiring. The Ambassador, my dad’s co-piloted creation with God has sustained our family for over seven years, and when everyone else would have thrown in the towel, my dad kept on fighting. That is why, when we realized the situation we were in, it was as devastating as I have ever experienced. One thing IS clear though, God saved my dad. It was not by mere luck. It was not by coincidence. It was not by some mystical universal force, but by the God of the Bible and ruler of my heart. I am thankful for all of the little things, but most of all I am thankful to God for my dad.
