We are therefore Christ’s Ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20)

By Albert Mohler The sight of the giant cruise ship Costa Concordia listing in the deadly embrace of the sea is now a graphic symbol of failure. Its timing is absolutely eerie, coming so close to the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. But, unlike the Titanic, this disaster did not take place in the middle of the ocean, far from the range of observation. The Costa Concordia appears to be almost touching the rocky Italian coastline. The digital revolution ensures that we are all able to see the wreck of the ship in living color. And then came the story. It appears that Captain Francesco Schettino deliberately took the Costa Concordia off its assigned course in order to bring the giant vessel dangerously close to the Tuscan coastline so that a crew member could greet his family. During the maneuver, the ship hit a submerged outcropping of rock, tearing a massive hole in the hull. Within seconds, the Captain knew the ship was

in trouble, and he brought the fast-sinking ship to rest on a reef, listing heavily on its starboard side. Within minutes, local authorities launched a rescue operation. Thankfully, the accident took place close to shore, and the captain had been able to crash the ship onto the reef, preventing it from fully sinking. Nevertheless, massive portions of the ship’s interior space quickly filled with the cold and dark water. The death toll could rise to as many as 40 or more. As of Wednesday night, eleven deaths had been confirmed, and another 24 passengers and crew remained missing. Authorities cited movement of the vessel and conditions on board as an indication that further rescues were unlikely. A flood of questions immediately surfaced. Why had the captain deliberately taken the ship off its course? What sane captain would bring a massive $450-million vessel with 4,200 passengers and crew into such clearly dangerous waters?

February 2012

Once the ship was compromised, were standard lifesaving practices followed? All of those questions were swirling about when a stunning development exploded its way into the conversation. An Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, obtained and released a recording of the Italian Coast Guard communicating with Captain Schettino after the accident. That conversation is sure to become part of maritime lore for generations to come. The recording makes clear that Captain Schettino abandoned his ship long before most passengers were rescued. Captain Gregorio De Falco of the Italian Coast Guard had discovered that Captain Schettino was not on board his ship, but in a rescue boat. Captain De Falco ordered Schettino to return to his ship and command the rescue operation: “Schettino? Listen Schettino. There are people trapped on board. Now you go with your boat under the prow on the starboard side. There is a pilot ladder. You will climb that

INSPIRATION Re-Gifting

SEA

by Paula McBride My dad could find the most romantic Valentines. He chose from the top of the display, big cards with lots of pink and flowers and lace. He chose cards with tender verses to express his love to my mom, my sister, and me, and he never forgot to honor his girls on that special day. However, in his own quirky way, he never signed them. Perhaps it was his ScotchIrish thrift--he knew if the cards weren't signed, he could use them again another year! My dad was regifting with cards about the same time First Lady Nancy Reagan was passing along unwanted trinkets and just before Jerry Seinfeld coined the word "regifting" when the infamous label-maker episode hit the network. "An awful lot of people don't see anything wrong with passing on a present they don't like to someone else," says researcher Karen Pine, "but it's a minefield. It's not just about the present. It's about the effort that has gone into choosing it and the emotion--it's like you are rejecting the giver by giving away their present." Does it surprise you to find it's just the opposite in God's economy? He wants us to give His gifts away! In fact, that's why He lavishes them on us with superabounding overflow. His resources are glorious and unlimited. They are free and available to those who yield their lives to Him in trust and obedience. Also, in God's economy, gifts, once given, return in blessing to the giver.

Continued from cover

Jesus gave love-gifts to His disciples before He finished His work on earth and returned to His Father in heaven. In each case, the intent was that the disciples give them away when He was gone. He gave them a pathway to the Father. Jesus explained that He was the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. He gave them a Partner in the person of the Holy Spirit who would be their Advocate, Counselor, and Teacher. He gave them an otherworldly peace to keep them from being troubled in the times ahead. After Jesus' death and resurrection, the disciples went out in power and proclaimed the availability of these gifts to all who would receive them, and the church was born. The spring from which these gifts flow is the irrepressible love of God. The apostle Paul describes it as too great to understand. He uses the imagery of a flood: deep, high, wide and long. But that still doesn't capture the magnitude with which it can rush into a soul, wash away futile attempts of ordinary human love, and completely fill it with the fullness of life and power--the ability to give away God's love to others. Paul is compelled to exclaim, "To God be the glory!" (Ephesians 3:14-21). In this month that celebrates human love, let's honor the Giver by giving away His gifts. We have what others want, gifts that truly satisfy. Let's be generous; the supply is inexhaustible!

ladder and go on board. You go on board and then you will tell me how many people there are. Is that clear? I’m recording this conversation, Cmdr. Schettino…” Captain De Falco continued: “You go up that pilot ladder, get on that ship and tell me how many people are still on board. And what they need. Is that clear? You need to tell me if there are children, women or people in need of assistance. And tell me the exact number of each of these categories. Is that clear? Listen Schettino, that you saved yourself from the sea, but I am going to… I’m going to make sure you get in trouble. …I am going to make you pay for this. Go on board, (expletive)!” Captain Schettino repeatedly refused to return to his ship, insisting that he was “here to coordinate the rescue.” Captain De Falco then ordered: “You go aboard. It is an order. Don’t make any more excuses. You have declared ‘abandon ship.’ Now I am in charge. You go on board! Is that clear? Do you hear me? Go, and call me when you are aboard. My air rescue crew is there.” Over time, Captain De Falco grew increasingly angry with Captain Schettino’s cowardly refusal to go back to his own ship. “You want to go home, Schettino?,” he asked in exasperation. “It is dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the pilot ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what their needs are. Now!” Italian authorities later confirmed that Captain Schettino never returned to the vessel, even when he was told that passengers remained in danger and some bodies had already been found. Across Italy, a stunned nation listened to the recorded conversation as it was broadcast by Italian media. Within an hour, the recording was available in English and a host of other languages — a

transcript of shame that was so shocking it seemed to be fiction. But it was fact. Captain Schettino was arrested within hours of the wreck, and he is likely to face criminal charges including manslaughter and abandoning his ship. Authorities quickly blamed Schettino for the accident, once it was confirmed that he had ordered the ship to leave its assigned course and when he was confirmed to have been in control of the vessel when the accident occurred. What are we to do with Captain Schettino? He will go down in history as an example of miserable failure, dereliction of duty, radical cowardice, and the collapse of manhood. He failed to do what any man in his position would be expected to do. He even refused a direct command to take up his duty, once he had abandoned it. We are left with the tragic picture of a frightened man who abandoned his post when he was most needed, and consigned over 4,200 human beings in his care to the dark water. It is a portrait of moral collapse and the forfeiture of manhood. Thankfully, this was not the only picture to be seen. Manrico Giampedroni, a 57-year-old crew member aboard the Costa Concordia devoted himself fearlessly to the rescue of passengers, returning to the listing ship again and again to find them and return them to safety. He stopped only when he badly fractured his leg and had to be rescued himself. Francis Servel, who attempted to flee the boat with his wife, Nicole, discovered that there was only one life jacket. He put it on his wife, and that was her last sight of him. “I owe my life to my husband,” she said. Continued On Pg 7 - SEA

As I went to put in a load of laundry, I noticed a woman who had so much laundry to do and was by herself. She was loading the washers as I left. I said “hi” to her and we spoke for a little bit but of course, I was in a rush. We live in OUR world and always in a hurry. When I returned to put my clothes to dry, she was folding her clothes. I did not know her name but she was a pleasant lady. She was having a hard time breathing and said she had not brought her oxygen with her. She had her motorized wheel chair and a trailer attached but she was overwhelmed with clothes. I felt so much compassion for her and right away I told her I was going to fold her clothes because I could not imagine her trying to do it herself. She told me she has been on dialysis for fifty one years; her arms with gauze but still had a positive attitude. As I helped her load her trailer, two guys walked in and helped her tie up her laundry so she could be on her way; By then I had a knot in my throat. Her faced was bruised but I did not ask her what had happened. She was so thankful and grateful telling us we were her “Angels”. To me it was something very little to do. As she left, I decided to follow her just in case laundry fell out of her trailer. As she went on the side of the highway right away her bags were dragging off; I pulled over and loaded up several bags in my car and I told her I would take them to her house. I was not surprised that

Radio Show

Hosted by Seth Halpern NEWS INTERVIEWS DISCUSSION no one else stopped to help as cars going by just stared. This is the kind of world we live in. We are in our "own world". As I drove away, I just started sobbing thinking here we are complaining about the smallest things and we are so blessed with health and must rise to the occasion and not ignore others. When my daughter and I got to her house, she was so thankful once again, but it was our pleasure to help her. She asked us inside and we found her house full of angels and she has so much faith in God. She told us the TV had fallen on her and that’s why she was bruised. She lives alone. We did find out her name. I gave her my phone number so if she ever needs anything to call me since she has no family close by. The next day she left me a message thanking me again. I wanted to share this story because I learned so much from this woman. I am so thankful for her example in the midst of trials; She did more for me than I did for her. We never know how God will use others to impact our lives in a positive way.

Continued from pg. 3 The Merchant Marine Officers’ Handbook states what is expected of a ship’s master, or captain. The first responsibility cited is this: The master is to be “the last man to leave the vessel.” Captain Schettino first told the Italian authorities that he had not abandoned his ship. He than changed his story to say that he had slipped and fallen into the rescue boat. Among the monuments on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland is a massive granite marker dedicated to the memory of Commander William L. Herndon. In 1857, Commander Herndon was in command of the commercial vessel Central America, under assignment to the United States government, when it ran into hurricane force winds. Commander Herndon gave everything he had to the rescue of those in his care. He evacuated 31 women and 28 children before the ship sank into the stormy waters off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. He gave his watch to one of the women and asked her to get it to his wife, explaining that he could not leave the ship while anyone remained on board. Survivors told of seeing Commander Herndon go down with his ship, cigar chomped in his teeth, his head bowed in prayer — a portrait of courage, devotion to his charge, and defiance of fear. Two U. S. Navy vessels have since been commissioned in his memory. Here we face two radically different men, who made radically different decisions. The decisions we make in the present will determine the kind of decision we would make in the future if we were to face the same challenge. Nothing less than the moral order of the universe is at stake when we consider the difference between Commander Herndon off Cape Hatteras and, off Italy, the Chicken of the Sea.

Supreme Court Ruling Hailed As A Victory For Religious Freedom Unanimous Decision Means Gov’t Won’t Tamper With Internal Church Affairs by Stephanie Samuel - Christian Post Reporter The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold ministerial exception in the case of Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School renews the church’s power to maintain the integrity of its religious message in Christian institutions and houses of worship, a conservative attorney said. When the Supreme Court unanimously rejected the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s claim to sue Hosanna-Tabor for firing former religious teacher Cheryl Perich, Attorney Mathew Staver said it also upheld the church’s right to control its religious message and protect it from government tampering. “The church would no longer be the church if it had gone the other way,” he asserted. “The church would be basically dominated by government regulation and would lose its unique message and ministry.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Hosanna-Tabor over what it believed to be a work dispute over an employer and a secular employee. Perich, who had been diagnosed with narcolepsy, was fired shortly after she returned from extended leave. The EEOC argued she was a secular teacher teaching from secular texts. Perich, however, taught religion classes and led prayer services several times a day. Critics say Wednesday’s ruling will

shortchange employees wrongfully fired from religious institutions. “Clergy who are fired for reasons unrelated to matters of theology – no matter how capricious or venal those reasons may be – have just had the courthouse door slammed in their faces,” the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said. However, Staver, chairman of the Liberty Counsel, said a court ruling affirming the EEOC’s power to restate Perich could have hindered a religious institution’s right to fire religious employees who teach and preach a religious message that is contrary to their faith in the future. “A Baptist school would eventually no longer be a Baptist school, a Catholic school would no longer be a Catholic school, a Jewish synagogue would no longer be Jewish synagogue,” he said. The Supreme Court voted 9-0 for ministerial protections, a gesture Luke Goodrich, a deputy national litigation director at The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, says is “a huge victory for religious freedom and a rebuke to the government.” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that the case was more than a mere employer-employee dispute and to treat it as such “intrudes

upon more than a mere employment decision. Such action interferes with the internal governance of the church, depriving the church of control over the selection of those who will personify its beliefs.” Now, Staver said, “If the church could not control the people who were communicating the religious message or a teacher, for example who is teaching in a Christian school, if they departed from the core teaching of the church or the religious institution, the school would be able to terminate under this ruling.” He also said religious schools like Hosanna-Tabor will no longer have to spend precious resources on this issue. The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod The Court, applauded the rul-

ing, saying, “The Court, in upholding the right of churches to select their own ministers without government interference, has confirmed a critical religious liberty in our country. The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod places great emphasis on the religious education of its children and the important role of commissioned ministers in promoting our faith, so we are thankful that the Court has confirmed our church’s right to decide who will be serving as ministers in our churches and schools.” He continued, “We also are thankful that this unanimous opinion will help secure the religious freedom of all religious organizations in America for years to come. Please keep the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court in your prayers daily.”

National Marriage Week National Marriage Week, running from Feb. 7-14, aims to strengthen and increase marriage rates – while reducing divorce – through hundreds of events, classes, and conferences promoting thesanctity of matrimony. “Marriage pays,” Sheila Weber, Executive Director of National Marriage Week USA, shared in a video clip. “Research shows that married individuals have far greater wealth and financial stability. They lead longer lives, have greater personal lives and better health.” Studies also found that children raised in a two-parent household perform better in school, teen pregnancy and addiction rates are lower, and they also have less trouble with the law, Weber claims. However, the executive director says that Americans can do even better, citing that $112 billion U.S. tax dollars are spent on divorce and unwed childbearing. According to Weber, 40 percent of children are born outside of marriage in America. Meanwhile, the head of the National Center of African-American Marriages revealed that 72 percent of all African-American babies are born out of wedlock. “In 1970, 79 percent of all adults in America were married,” Weber stated. “But today that has dropped down to 57 percent.” She urged, “Let’s work together, let’s strengthen marriage.” The goals of National Marriage Week USA is to promote the benefits of mar-

riage, elevate strengthening marriage as a national issue among policy makers and the media, and provide a new national clearinghouse of established, trusted marriage classes and conferences. This year's initiative includes new features such as “Date Night Challenge,” a 2-hour webcast with Dr. Greg Smalley and comedian Jeff Allen. Weber has also asked citizens to appeal to members of Congress regarding their RSVPs to a reception about why strengthening marriage is critical to the nation's economy. National Marriage week is part of an international movement – the vision of which is “to encourage the development and support of Marriage Weeks in 75 nations of World by 2021.” Worldwide, 16 countries are participating in the event. It is a celebration of the “diversity and vibrancy of marriage as the basis for family life,” according to organizers. According to the International Marriage Week website, Feb. 7-14 is a time to say “wake up. Marriage is a great idea.” In 1996, Richard Kane first introduced National Marriage Week in the U.K. The initiative has since spread to the Czech Republic, Hungry, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Australia. Co-founders Brent Barlow and Diane Sollee of Smart Marriages introduced Marriage Week to the U.S. in 2002. Continued On Pg 13 - MARRIAGE

MARRIAGE

CBA MARKETPLACE MONTHLY

Cont. from pg. 11

Huge Cash Reward by Dave Kugelman

Not really but wanted to be sure to get your attention. I wanted to give you some of the key reasons why you should consider joining the Christian Business Alliance. We meet every single Tuesday at noon with the exception of the last Tuesday of the year. The first Tuesday of each month we meet at the Bonanza Inn Convention Center and will (typically) feature a speaker who will share a personal testimony. This is a great opportunity to come and be inspired in your own Christian walk and is a great way to introduce nonbelievers to Jesus. Many people refuse to set foot in a church but are receptive to coming to a lunch meeting to hear a speaker (Especially if you buy their lunch). We never put anyone on the spot. We do give everyone an opportunity to introduce themselves and share where they work OR where the worship. For the balance of Tuesdays, we meet at businesses or ministries throughout the community. (Recently we met at Twin Cities Rescue Mission, Young Life, Glines Floor Covering, Pizza Factory to name a few) The purpose of these marketplace meetings is to specifically pray for these businesses or ministries. We also will pray

COMMUNITY

for attendees personal needs. Occasionally lunch is provided by the host business. There have been amazing times of God’s presence at these meetings. In addition, many deep friendships have been developed. We believe that God is going to move powerfully in the Yuba-Sutter marketplace. Won’t you join us? Finally, the CBA was founded out of a heart to encourage and challenge lukewarm Christians into a solid 24 / 7 relationship with Jesus Christ. Compromised Christianity destroys our witness for Jesus. We can only represent Jesus effectively when we are in a committed (obedient) relationship with Him. I’ll ask again, won’t you consider joining us? Feel free to contact me or any other member to hear more about the ministry of the CBA. To receive a weekly email with info on our upcoming meetings, please send your email address to Seth Halpern at editor@ambassadornewspaper.com. David Kugelman is the president of the Christian Business Alliance which meets each Tuesday at noon at various locations.

Join us from noon to 1pm at the Bonanza Inn the first Tuesday of every month for a time of encouragement, fellowship and prayer with the

Christian Business Alliance. All are welcome!

The event is spearheaded by a group of individuals and charities that believe a healthy marriage creates security and stability for the couple and any children that may come along. “If you are fortunate to be in a mar-

riage, you should look after it – and here are some tips to help you improve your relationship, and some signposts to organizations who can help you transform a good marriage into a great marriage.”

Kathy... Selfless inspiration; two words that come to mind easily when I think of you. Always giving, always thinking of others, an inspiration to those around you, all while trying to stay in the background. You are a blessing to me and our children.

~Love, Jerry

AS WE SEE IT Morality And The Economy No Separating The Two By: Chuck Colson The next election should be all about the economy, right? Wrong in spades! During the seemingly endless buildup to the Iowa caucuses, there was one consistent refrain repeated over and over. It’s like the big lie — the more you keep repeating it, the more people are going to believe it, but it remains a lie. The lie was simply this: that the political parties have to choose between social issues and economic issues. This year, the media and the party machines are telling us ad nauseam that the only issue that matters is the economy. So any candidate who wants to win the White House should just shut up about things like marriage, the sanctity of life, religious liberty, and those other annoying issues that distract us from focusing on jobs and the economy. But that’s crazy! Doesn’t anybody get the connection between the social issues and economics issues? One candidate who does, Rick Santorum had the courage to link the two in a recent Iowa town hall meeting. (And before I go on, please, folks, I’m not endorsing him or anyone. I never do.) Here’s what Senator Santorum said: “Yes, [the election is] about growth and the economy, [but] it’s also about what is at the core of our country . . . faith and family. You can’t have a strong economy, you can’t have limited government if the family is breaking down and we don’t live good, moral, and decent lives.” Precisely right. And what does he get for his remarks? Backhanded compliments for his showing in Iowa and a stern warning from, among others, the conservative National Review: Here’s what the National Review wrote online: “In a general election… where the focus is almost certainly going to be on economic issues, it is questiona-

14

The Ambassador

ble whether Santorum’s relentless focus on social issues will play well with independent voters, especially in the crucial suburbs.” Hogwash. If the nation’s current economic crisis has taught us anything, it’s that a healthy economy cannot thrive in the midst of moral breakdown. Ethical failures on Wall Street, Main Street, and Capitol Hill put us into this mess we’re in today, as I’ve said many times before. But how about some facts? I’ll have the citations for you at BreakPoint. org: Take incarceration rates: something Santorum has alluded to and I’ve seen with my own eyes: “Young men who grow up in homes without fathers are twice as likely to end up in jail as those who come from traditional two-parent families.” And “70% of juveniles in stateoperated institutions come from fatherless homes.” How about education? 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. And children from lowincome, two-parent families outperform students from high-income, single-parent homes. I could go on and on. Do you think that crime rates, incarceration, low educational achievement, out of wedlock births, affect the economy and government spending? Of course they do, and the statistics prove this! If you want a healthy, thriving economy you’ve got to have a strong moral societal foundation. And any so-called “conservatives” who think otherwise are simply deluding themselves; the two issues simply can’t be separated. As Christians, we can’t buy into the lie that we can separate economic prosperity from moral behavior. And we can’t be afraid to hold the candidates’ feet to the fire on this, either.

Courageous Seth Halpern

I have been anticipating the release of the movie “Courageous” on DVD. I was not able to see it in theaters because I was in the hospital in October. In January, I finally had the opportunity to see it. Wow! A lot of people had raved about it and so I thought it might not live up to the “hype”. It did. I laughed and cried. I was angry and happy. The script, acting and direction was superb. Best of all, of course, was the message. What a powerful, powerful message. Every father (and mother) should see this film. “Courageous” deals with the issue of fatherhood and the characters in the film represent many types of fathers-those who have been abandoned and those who have abandoned their children, those who were trying to be a good dad and those who were not trying. All of it speaks to the need for fathers to do right and to be “men of courage”. It is interesting that “Courageous” was released on DVD the same month as the Italian cruise disaster (see cover story). There, the main “character” is the real life captain of a large cruise ship carrying over four thousand people. Unfortunately, he showed himself not to be a “man of courage” as he (reports say) ran the ship aground while attempting to show off for fellow crew members and passengers. Worse, he

Seth Halpern - Editor “jumped ship” and got into a life boat while many scared passengers were still on board. He was responsible for the more than a dozen deaths and several dozen injuries in addition to millions of dollars in damage. Some are not heroes. God wants us to be men (and women) of courage. I have been reading a devotional book for the past several months by the Voice of the Martyrs ministry titled Extreme Devotions about men and women whose courage in the face of persecution has brought them through enduring suffering and torture simply for standing for Truth and doing the “right thing” according to God’s Word. I’m grateful that I have not been faced with a situation where I may need to give up my life in order to stay true to Christ. Yet, I am inspired to stand up for my faith in Jesus, even through ridicule or discrimination. I want to be courageous in the face of suffering or opposition. Where are you “men and women of courage”? Watch the film, then resolve to live it out.
