The great american world view test The 2012 Election By Albert J. Mohler www.albertmohler.com
Ambassador Challenge p. 7
A
merican presidential elections are the world’s most public display of the democratic process. The global media follow the American elections with a fervor that is easily understood—what happens in an American presidential election matters all over the world. Our presidential campaigns are political pageants and electoral dynamos. But, as any honest thoughtful observer will understand, our elections are also great worldview exercises. We reveal our worldview by our vote. This is particularly true of the 2012 election. The presidential nominees of the two major parties represent two very different worldviews and visions. President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney have adopted policy positions that place them in direct conflict, and the platforms of their respective parties reveal two radically different renderings of reality. Years ago, Governor George Wallace of Alabama remarked with disdain that there is not “a dime’s worth of difference” between the Democrats and the Republicans. In a sense, he was at least partly right. A look back at the platforms of the two parties in the 1950s and 1960s reveals little division over many of

the issues that now frame our national debate. Some of today’s issues were simply missing, of course, given the fact that they were not even part of the national conversation. But on issues of the economy, foreign policy, the function of government, and a host of other issues, the parties held positions that were far closer than is the case today. Divisive issues such as the war in Vietnam would be addressed with different policy proposals, but the platforms of the two parties reflected a shared moral and political framework—a truth that would shock many Americans today. All that changed with the social and political divisions that came with the 1968 and 1972 elections, when the Democratic Party experienced its great transfor-
mation concerning a host of social issues. The 1980 election saw the Republicans experience their own transformation, with social issues such as abortion rising to major attention in the party platform. Fast forward to 2012, and the distance between the two parties is breathtaking. The nation’s political polarization is clearly evident in the radical distinctions between the Republican and Democratic platforms. But this polarization is not merely political. It is fundamentally moral and ideological. These two platforms present two contradictory understandings of realities as basic as human life, liberty, and the institution of

THE AMBASSADOR The Ambassador is a free, monthly publication promoting unity and revival among the local Yuba-Sutter area Bible-believing churches. The Ambassador has a circulation of 6,000 and is distributed in local churches and businesses in the community. The purpose of The Ambassador is to pursue the great commission of Christ by making disciples and to encourage, inform, challenge and connect the local body of Christ. We believe in the inspiration and authority of the Bible as the written word of God. We believe that God exists as One, in three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that the atoning work of Christ (His death) on the cross and His resurrection is the ONLY means of salvation and the only way to Eternal Life in Heaven. We welcome editorial content from anyone wishing to promote the mission of The Ambassador. All articles and advertisement content is subject to the approval of the editor. INSPIRATION There is always wonderful There is always wonderful, if we have eyes to see. Even in the darkest hour, I know my God Loves me. Every trial we go through, Has been through His Hands First. He has a plan for every man, There to quench all thirst. Step by step He leads us through, carries us awhile. Until we leave our fears behind, and Grace bestows a smile. Our Father knows our every need, Never lets us go Though we may wander far away Still yet He Loves us so. Even in the roughest storms I know my God Loves me We walk by Faith and Grace assured, of Wonders yet to see. - Elizabeth Hexberg Wheatland

The Mantle of Sorrow By Paula McBride
Written in memory of Linnea Lomax for her family For me, sorrow is a distant cousin. When my dad passed away due to the ravages of Parkinson’s disease, he had lived a full and productive life. Though we would miss him, we rejoiced that he was called up to heaven. We imagined him dressed in a baseball uniform managing the angels in the outfield. My brother was sixty-four when he graduated to heaven, but for him, too, it was a release from disease. I know the sorrow of broken relationships and a fractured family, but I’ve never had my heart ripped out of my chest by the loss of a loved one who died too young, too soon, or too tragically. Many are more closely related to my insidious cousin, and for some, raw grief is fresh. Questions are still hurled at God whose face seems turned away. “Why do bad things happen to good people? Does God even care? Do my prayers do any good? This isn’t the way it was supposed to turn out. How can God be glorified in this outcome?” Tragedy brings us to a fork in the road of our allegiance. Standing in the median is Jesus, the Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief. His hands are outstretched and we can see His scars. He whispers that many have followed the road of rage and bitterness to end up broken shells of humanity. “Enter in with Me,” Jesus says. “I trust you for this. As we share our suffering, the seed of yourself will fall into the ground. It will die, but in the end, bear much fruit.” Can we give our allegiance to a God who demands so much? Let’s look at the Person who is pleading with us. Scripture tells us that God allowed His one and only Son to be brutally slain for us. There’s the grandest “Why!” of all time. If God is good, why? It’s a greater good than we can wrap our minds around. God was good enough and loved us enough to do the unthinkable to redeem us. It was God’s Son who was wounded and crushed for our sins, Isaiah wrote. He was beaten that we
might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed! In knowing God, we look through the suffering of Jesus. Perhaps God’s face comes more clearly into focus when crowned by thorns. Nicholas Wolterstorff wrote, “It is said of God that no one can behold His face and live. I always thought this meant that no one can see his splendor and live. A friend said perhaps it meant that no one could see His sorrow and live. Or perhaps His sorrow is His splendor.” Loved ones who have walked the road of allegiance to Christ in their sorrow know this splendor. They testify of indefinable intimacy with Jesus. They say that, though they have sadness, they would not go back to the time before the tragedy. They value the abiding love, joy, peace, and hope that is their present experience. Many are in ministry to the grieving. When God entrusts us with the mantle of sorrow, let’s wear it splendidly. There are many at the fork in the road who need to know that Jesus cares.

“Election” (cont. from cover) marriage. Though the two parties have taken opposing positions on many of these issues for years, the radical nature of this current polarization is new. ABORTION AND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE The parties differ about matters such as health care and the environment, the power of public employee unions, medicare, and foreign policy. But those differences, real and consequential, pale in contrast with the positions taken by the parties concerning the issues of abortion and same-sex marriage. In 2012, the Democratic Party becomes the first major political party in the United States to call for the legalization of same-sex marriage. “We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under the law for same-sex couples,” states the platform. This follows President Obama’s announcement earlier this year that his “evolving” position on same-sex marriage now reached the point that he would openly call for same-sex couples to be given the legal right to marry. The velocity of the Democratic Party’s shift concerning same-sex marriage was on full display on the stage of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, when former President Bill Clinton nominated President Obama for re-election. In 1996, President Clinton signed the
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law after a massive bi-partisan majority in Congress approved the legislation. That act established that the United States government would recognize only the union of a man and a woman as marriage, and that no state would be required to recognize a sxame-sex union performed in any other state. Just 16 years later, the Democratic president who signed that act into law nominated a Democratic president who is working for its repeal. President Obama has ordered his Attorney General not to defend DOMA in the Federal courts. He and his party now openly call for what that federal statute—still bearing the full force of law—prohibits. The Republican platform stated: “We affirm our support for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.” Thus, the Republican platform calls for nothing less than a Constitutional amendment to prevent what the Democratic platform demands the law to affirm. That Constitutional amendment, Republicans argue, is made necessary by the very fact that the Democratic President will not defend DOMA. On the issue of abortion, the Republican platform states, “we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the

RESOURCES Building a Stronger Relationship By Dr. Susan McNally
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. NIV Ephesians 5:33 “Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband” American King James Whether it’s a relationship with your spouse, your child, or your co-worker, or another relationship that has soured, you can begin to rebuild through understanding respect, positive communication, honesty, and thoughtfulness. Today let’s start understanding within the marriage relationship, the foundation of society. Generally speaking women hunger for affection that isn’t always sexual (hugs, holding hands, cards, etc.), and conversation, a mutual sharing of ideas, feelings, and interests. Primarily she needs to know her man loves her then she can more readily open herself to him. When a man meets her needs, including financial support, she is more likely to be content in the relationship. Men generally desire a satisfying sexual relationship, and need respect or admiration. He may also crave her joining him in his sports or outdoor interests. When a woman meets his needs he is more likely to be content in the relationship. Focusing on the positive, not the

negative is characteristic of healthy communication. Most women are good at pointing out our husbands’ faults and failures, and acting out anger and frustration when our needs are not met. This leads to defensiveness and distance in our marriages. Yelling, nagging, and belittling are disrespectful and ineffective. God suggests a radical concept: Treat your husband like a king; eventually, he will begin to treat you like a queen. Praise is appreciated, and like nutrients poured upon a plant, praise stimulates positive growth. Notice what he does right and verbally encourage him by complimenting him. Even partial success should be reinforced. This is also help in all relationships. Men love a challenge so appeal to his intelligence by asking him to help you solve a problem. Ask for his help and avoid being overly critical. Women need to watch your attitude and actions. Respect is a verb and a noun. We demonstrate respect through our action and our attitude. Wives need to work at showing respect in thought, word, and deed. He will be more willing and able to give you the love and affection you desire if he is admired and respected. Dr. Susan McNally, Ph.D., LMFT is a licensed therapist in Yuba City. Dr. McNally may be contacted at 530-7403268.

Get Out Of Town!
Chillin’ in Monterey! by Seth Halpern
The Central Valley heat took its toll on us this summer and my wife and I needed to get away somewhere (anywhere) that didn’t require a continuously running air conditioner. I don’t know about you but I get a little tired of hearing “How do you like this heat?” or the more cynical “Is it hot enough for you?” After a year of health issues, heart surgery, and other trials, it was time to get away.. God graciously blessed us with time in September where we could enjoy our old stomping grounds in San Jose and a blissful taste of heaven in Pacific Grove. We spent three nights enjoying cherished time with long-time friends in San Jose. Afterwards, we drove down to Monterey, where we hadn’t been since moving here from San Jose almost a decade ago. The temperature drop from mid 90’s here to the 60’s was a welcome change as we drove south. My wife and I were given a two-night stay at the Martine Inn, one of the finest B&B’s in Pacific Grove. We almost missed it as we drove on Ocean View Blvd because we were marveling at the beauty of the crashing waves. Don Martine, the owner, designed and operates The Martine Inn, a “living museum” of sorts. The elegance of the 25 room converted Victorian mansion is unsurpassed by any inn of my experience. Stellar service compliments the luxurious sterling silver, crystal and fine china with
which breakfast is served. The only thing that may exceed that is the view. Wow! What a sight. To see the handiwork of our God who created the vast and powerful oceans! The sighting of a migrating whale
capped our experience. The staff had not seen one this close before. God was truly showing favor on us. What a blessing! After breakfast we spent some time at the nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium. The $35 admission price was high, but it is known to be a very special place and set right in the heart of Monterey’s famous Cannery Row. The Open Sea exhibit provided a dramatic welcome as you walk up to the 90 foot window displaying sharks, giant turtles and other fish swimming together. Another favorite of many (us included) was the popular Jellies Experience is a temporary traveling exhibit that adds to the MBA’s already impressive collections of Jelly Fish. The Sea Horse exhibit was also fun contemplating what
RESOURCES God may have been thinking when He created these strange looking creatures! We enjoyed a late lunch on Fisherman’s Wharf and headed back to the inn. After a brief rest we headed to the dining room for early evening hors d’oeuvres. We spoiled ourselves on delicious appetizers and decided to enjoy the sunset instead of eating dinner. We sat on a bench just a few yards from the front of the inn. We overloaded our senses with the freshness of the ocean air, enjoying the symphony of seagulls, sea lions, ocean waves and more as they played in perfect harmony. I could have sat watching God’s creation for hours, but the breeze picked up and sent us inside to enjoy our room. The Carriage Room was exquisitely designed in a floral theme. Antique yet usable furnishings filled the room. The elegance, antique décor was combined with modern luxurious bedding, towels and robes. The deep claw-foot tub was inviting but so was the Lobby’s Game Room with an 1880’s Pool Table and more. I didn’t have the time to partake of either. Don is a collector and restorer of Classic MG’s. He has 16 on display. Somehow, our time was too brief to see much of that as well. Checkout came too soon on our second day, but the friendly staff sent us on our way with a “Thank You” bag which included home-made banana bread and bottled waters for the road. I purchased a “Martine Inn- Do Not Disturb” door plate so that I could remember the peacefulness of our stay. We have been to Mendocino
and Fort Bragg, but I vote for Pacific Grove as the most beautiful place to go to enjoy the Coast. It’s not much further and the setting is unmatchable!

COMMUNITY ”Election” (cont. from p. 7) unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.” The Democratic platform states: “The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.” The worldview clash could hardly be more dramatic. The Republicans frame the issue in terms of the unborn child’s “fundamental individual right to life.” The Democrats frame the issue as “a woman’s right to make decisions”—including the explicit right to decide to kill the baby in her womb. These are two contradictory moral claims. One party claims that no abortions should be legal and the other claims that all abortions should be legal. Each party is driven by their own moral logic. The Republicans are driven by the belief that, at every point of development, every individual human being is sacred and has a fundamental right to life. The Democrats are driven by the belief that the woman’s unfettered right to choose an abortion is paramount, and that a woman can demand an abortion at any time for any reason— or for no reason. As their language states, “We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.” The most revealing words there are “any” and “all.” CONFLICTING WORLDVIEWS Both parties hold these positions because they are, in truth, the inevitable consequences of basic worldview assumptions. These assumptions include belief that marriage is essential to human flourishing and cannot be redefined without bringing on human disaster, contrasted with the belief that the liberation of humanity from oppression and prejudice requires the redefinition of marriage. In the background are contradictory assumptions about human sexuality, sexual morality, moral authority, individual autonomy, and the ends to which human be-

ings are to aim their lives. The assumptions framing the abortion positions of the two parties include the belief that every human life is sacred and to be protected at every point of development contrasted with the belief that a human life takes on greater worth and right to live as the development continues, but is tentative at least until the moment of live birth. The belief that the baby is itself the most urgent moral unit is contrasted with the belief that the woman and her right to control her own reproductive destiny is paramount. Behind these beliefs stand convictions and assumptions about human dignity, the worth of human life, the responsibility of the society to every human life, the purpose and end of human reproduction, and nothing less than the meaning of both life and death. We are not looking at minor matters of political difference. We are staring into the abyss of comprehensive moral conflict. Christian voters can escape neither the consequences of their vote, nor the fact that our most basic convictions will be revealed in the voting booth come November. Christians cannot face these questions without the knowledge that God is the Giver of life, who made every human life in his image. We cannot consider this election without the knowledge that our Creator has given us the covenant of marriage as the union of one man and one woman as the demonstration of his glory and the promise of human flourishing. Americans will elect a president in November, but our vote will reveal far more than our political preference. The 2012 election is a worldview exercise of unprecedented contrasts—an unavoidable test of our most basic convictions. The electoral map will reveal more than an election winner. It will reveal who Americans really are and what we really believe.

Sunday, October 7th is Life Chain Sunday. Many Christians across the country will stand together along busy streets and highways publicly displaying signs that communicate the pro-life message. It saddens me that many Christians have termed this topic political and therefore choose to ignore it. Though much of the public discussion on the issue of life seems to fall into the political category, it is not political, it is a moral issue. I will personally confess that I do not do enough for the Pro-Life cause. However, with that said, many of us can do something. Would you please consider joining with many Christians on Life Chain Sunday from 2:00 to 3:30 along Colusa Avenue in Yuba City? For more information, contact me at the Church of Glad Tidings: 671-3160 x204. Please take a moment and read the following passage of scripture which declares that regardless of how someone is conceived, God ultimately is the One who creates each individual life. Therefore it is precious and needs to be protected. See you on the 7th. Psalms 139:13-16 (NIV) For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s
womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Passing on the Love of Jesus Operation Christmas Child
View from the Pulpit “CASINO CONFUSION”
(editor’s note: This is a new section that hopes to offer the wisdom and counsel from local pastors on areas of everyday living . The purpose is to help readers, show diversity within the body, and provoke discussion. It is not intended to promote division.) Q. Is it appropriate to go to local
casino like Colusa Casino or Thunder Valley even if it’s just for the food and/or concerts? Jesus hung out with sinners and prostitutes. The religious leaders of the day were scandalized. Jesus sought out those opportunities. I think He would be fine with going to a local casino as long as when we did it, it was with love and humility, led by the Holy Spirit and becoming God’s presence among them with flesh on. (I would not recommend it, however, to someone with either smoke allergies or a gambling addiction) Lois Black First United Methodist, Yuba City God commands us to “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (1 Th 5:21 KJV) NO, going to Casino for any reason is to support the Casino. Gambling is not only wrong it is sin. Winning is at the cost of someone’s misfortune. Casino meals and concerts are subsidized from someone’s misfortunes. They are used as hooks to entice and temp people.
It is the devil’s playground. Attending the Casino tarnishes our testimony and witness for Christ and His Kingdom. We therefore should be willing to sacrifice the pleasures of the world for Christ and abstain. Trust God HE provides! Miguel Jurna First Baptist Church of Olivehurst In all such matters, the Holy Spirit is meant to be our guide. Romans 14 clearly indicates that the Spirit may give differing guidance to each of us in such matters. Generally speaking, I believe that Casinos would very likely be the kind of place that Jesus would take his disciples to eat, and display a miracle of healing or in some other way demonstrate the love of God to lost men and woman. That is the specific reason He came to earth - to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Both in His day, as now, there are always plenty of “Pharisees” to condemn anyone for “hob-knobing” with sinners, especially if anyone dare venture onto “their turf” to do it! But the joy of sharing Christ’s love is always worth the risk of criticism by the self-righteous nay-sayers! I say, “Stay focused on sharing the love of Christ with somebody, stay away from the slot machines & card tables, and GO FOR IT!!!” Dave Bryan Church of Glad Tidings

Do you have a burning desire to share how Jesus has blessed you? Your life is so much better just because of Jesus. You know other lives could also be miraculously changed if they would only listen. BUT they don’t want to hear. “What are you, some kind of Jesus-freak?” So you learn to be quiet, to hide your faith behind a polite smile, tempering your words with caution. Sound familiar? That’s how the world tries to smother Jesus, how Satan muzzles our testimony, how he places a bowl over the shinning light Jesus ignites in our hearts. But there are places in the world that heartfelt testimonies about the love and grace of Jesus are shared in powerful ways. Beginning in 1993 Operation Christmas Child has sent over 100 million shoebox gifts around the world. These gifts are a tool, introducing children to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Countless children who received those gifts also accepted Jesus who profoundly changed their lives. Today those children are teens and young adults, longing to share the power of Jesus. That is where The Greatest Journey opens hearts to Jesus. Christian lives in Ecuador. He received a shoe box gift when he was ten years old. Through the box, his mother’s encouragement, and a local church, Christian came to know Jesus. But his faith was shaken when his beloved mother was diagnosed with a kidney disease. Christian prayed for Jesus to heal her, to provide the money for transplant surgery. However, she died two years later. “I didn’t want anything to do with God after my mother’s death. I was angry. I stopped going to church,” Christian stated. Yet Christian’s friends kept praying for him, and a few years later, he returned to church. In 2009, Christian received Jesus as his Savior. He realized that God alone had carried him through those dark, troubled years, never abandoning him. Now twenty, Christian is eager to share the miracle of Jesus. At his church, he teaches young shoebox recipients Bible lessons from The Greatest Journey,
the Operation Christmas Child followup discipleship program. Each Saturday Christian and two other instructors work with 120 children: memorizing scripture, praying, and praising the Lord in worship. “The people in my church supported me and worked with me, helping me during a difficult time in my life,” said Christian. “That’s why I want to work with children, to teach them everything I have learned.” Perhaps we too can learn from Christian. If we persevere, God will open doors for us to share His infinite love with a dark, hurting world. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 • Dollar Tree Events - Operation Christmas Child @ 1460 Bridge Street, October 6th, October 13 – 9am- 6pm. the Democrats are bent on growing government and spending more while Republicans want to cut spending. Let’s see…if things were tight and I was in debt, what would I do? I guess it’s different when you’re spending other people’s money. Why is it liberals and progressives perceive hate on the faces of Christians yet fail to see it on the face of Islam? Don’t they see the riots or hear the chants of death to America coming from “the religion of peace?” No, they’d rather point the finger of blame at some “insensitive,” insignificant filmmaker. It’s time to stop apologizing for freedom and start standing up for it! It’s time to stop bowing to those who, by their own words, actually hate us! It’s time to stand up for God and with Israel! It’s time America assumes its rightful place…Under God. The choice is yours.

Back on the air! The Ambassador Radio Show, which I have hosted weekly for several years has been on hiatus for quite a while. Last year’s heart bypass and a myriad of other issues have sidelined me from the microphone and headset. The station replayed previous shows until the replays had been rerun ad nauseum. Last month, I nervously sat back in my host chair and took to the airwaves again. My first show back introduced Josephat Mmanyi from Samaritan Village Orphanage in Tanzania ( an international ministry with a strong Yuba City connection). In upcoming shows, we will be hearing testimonies of the Lord’s Gracious and wonderful transforming power in the lives of people of many backgrounds. We’ll also chat with ministry leaders, authors, and others who have been given to us by God to speak life and wisdom into His people. I first began radio with Dave (Kug) Kugelman and Sean Blount a number of years ago in Sacramento on KFIA. These days we have different shows. Dave and Sean host Taking Back Christianity where they have lively discussion about the news of the week and talk about how we should live in our current culture. Well I did it! It was probably the most painful experience I have ever endured, but I did it…I watched both the Republican and Democratic conventions. I have to tell you, the only truth I was able to glean from either party was…Talk is cheap and truth illusive. And the only common thread between the two was… ”This is the most important election in recent memory…possibly ever.” I agree. America has come to a pivotal fork in the road. In the simplest of terms, the way to the left leads to more dependency on government, while the road to the right leads to more individual responsibility. Turn left to continue on to Greece or right to return to America. One of the most glaring illustrations of how the two Parties differ was the floor vote to reinsert God into the Democratic platform. After three voice votes, which appeared to be evenly divided, the chair declared the motion to include God, approved. This was met with a chorus of boos from the convention floor. The fact that the Democratic Party seems equally split on God should be troubling to all Christians, and begs the question: What does the party really stand for? Well, it became abundantly clear as a parade of speakers passionately supported “a woman’s right to choose,” which really means; a woman’s right to choose to kill her unborn child. In other words, she has the right to refuse accountability for her choices and actions. You’ve come a long way baby, but your baby…not so much. Many also spoke on the right to marry who or whatever they desired. Where in the heck did all these, so called, rights come from anyway? As speakers droned on about this right and that right, it became clear that the Democrats have no moral standards regarding sexuality…it’s that whole accountability thing. That’s probably why half the party voted against God. They prefer a form of sexual anarchy. On the issue of our economy and national debt (16 Trillion dollars and growing by Billions every day)
