veryone loves BABIES. They’re always cute! That’s why baby and puppy videos usually win the grand prize on America’s Funniest Videos. Baby pictures are always fun to see and (for every parent with a pulse) to show. So, take a moment and play our game. Can you guess all the pictures without “peeking” at the answers. Number 1: This baby girl was originally named Destiny Hope at birth in 1992. She grew up with a famous country-singer dad who helped her to get cast on TV at an early age. As Disney’s pride and joy for a number of years, she starred as every young girl’s hero from 2006 to 2011. Miley Cyrus then moved on to music videos and has revealed herself (pun intended) to all as the “notso-innocent” girl of Disney fame. Number 2: This cute baby boy was born to multi-national parents but
soon was raised only by his mother. She encouraged him to pursue learning and be successful. After graduating Harvard Law School, he practiced law until being elected to State Senate. A few years later, Barack Obama became the first AfricanAmerican to be elected President of the United States.

In high school, this jock was all-state in football, basketball, and baseball. He turned down a major league baseball offer in order to concentrate on football. Last year, Turlock native Colin Kaepernick led the San Francisco 49’ers to the Super Bowl.
Number 5: Can you guess
number 5? Probably not. You see, number 5 is no celebrity but an “average” baby. Is (or was) your baby an “average” baby? To you, he or she was probably the most beautiful baby in the world!. No one would expect otherwise. No, baby number 5 was not born to anyone famous nor achieved the fame or success that these other babies have achieved. In fact, her only achievement, so far, is not even her achievement but more her mother’s achievement for choosing to keep her despite facing a difficult situation. It might have been easier to “get rid of the burden”, but she realized that this baby was a gift, not “a burden”. Baby number 5 is not only beloved in the eyes of her mother, but like all babies, she is loved by God. That’s because, like the other babies, she was created in the image of God. God is not “average” and He doesn’t create babies in His image to be “average”.

Casual Banter or a Tame Tongue?
Seasons and Giants
by Paula McBride The words were out of my mouth before I thought of their consequences. I tried to excuse them, saying I was only joking, but my conscience convicted and sentenced me guilty. You see, here at the mission, a large-scale building project is preparing a concrete-block apartment complex for staff housing. The intent is to get us moved out of ancient travel trailers into something that doesn’t cause so many maintenance problems. The trouble is, I like my trailer. But I didn’t have to say so. Paulino and his buddy were taking a break at the construction site, and as I walked by, he called out to me. “Hey, Paula, which apartment do you want for yours? We’ll put your name on it.” “I don’t want one,” I bantered back. “I like the privacy of my trailer and the little piece of dirt around it where I can grow things. Besides, it’ll be noisy here, and I won’t have much of a view.” “Aw, but here you’ll have lots of fellowship with your neighbors,” Paulino countered. “Plus,” I interrupted, “whoever heard of putting the bathroom inside the front door instead of near the bedroom? “My voice was changing from banter to petulant. I continued my walk to where I was going without really finishing the conversation with Paulino, but I began a verbal chastisement of myself. “What in the world were you thinking to be so unappreciative of Paulino’s effort?” I scolded myself. “You know how hard he has worked since the demolition of the old motel till now. You know his injuries. You know his delight in the progress that has been made. You know he feels the staff will have warmer housing this winter, and he’s been a big part of it.” I knew what I had to do. I went to Paulino later, and told him I was wrong to be unappreciative of his labor on the new staff housing. I was wrong to use words

that tear down and don’t build up. In a manner very typical for him, he brushed off the apology and said he didn’t let it get him down. He is working for the Lord, not the staff. It’s that humility that tugged on my conscience in the first place. Paulino has a beautiful servant’s heart and didn’t deserve my thoughtlessness. Some may think I don’t need to get so bent out of shape over casual banter, but I’m a long-time student in the Holy Spirit’s School of Self Control, and I don’t want to fail Taming the Tongue 101 another time. I’ve had deadly experiences with my tongue in the past. As I walk with Jesus, I want His thoughts to be my thoughts and His words my words. I take to heart Paul’s counsel in Ephesians 4:29b, “Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” And though I’m far from being a Proverbs 31 woman, part of her description resonates with me: “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness” (vs. 26). Oh, if only that were true more often! There’s room for more students in Taming the Tongue 101. Would you care to join me? With the Holy Spirit as tutor, we’re sure to become more like our Master.
Life is a most interesting thing; it can be challenging, fun, a time to work and to kick back. Like all of nature, our life has its seasons. Everyone’s season is different; we are all at various stages within our specific seasons. As you look at the seasons and contemplate what they are about, do you wonder how you made it through some or how some pass so quickly while others drag on forever. Do you ever stop to marvel at how the Creator plans and organizes them? How one season prepared you for the next? There is the beginning of a season which can be thrilling or a little scary, even both at the same time; perhaps you are in the middle where newness has worn off but it’s not yet old hat or second nature. For some it may be the end of a season where you sense there is a shift coming in the atmosphere to something new. A time to be wise, for your eyes to be opened and spirit tuned in to the season that is at hand. To what the Father is doing, the shifting and shakings taking place, the business that is not as usual. Being ever vigilant, watching so as not to miss it. To tune in to the sound of His voice, that you will recognize it in the midst of all other clamoring voices and follow it as He leads. Make the most of each season whether they feel good or not; seasons of rest, of being still and knowing He is God,

seasons of preparation and testing, season of growth and higher accountability. Take the time to ask the Lord at each stage what He would like to reveal or do in you through the experiences instead of trying to shortcut them. Ask the Lord how you can serve Him and bless others. Ask Him to allow you to see from His perspective. Will you come to love the dream He has for you or will you complain at every step as the Israelites did in the wilderness? Complaining, demanding, not remembering God’s goodness and faithfulness, not trusting Him to fulfill His promise to bring you into the promise land and deliver you from the giants before you? What are some of the giants; fear, doubt, hardship, what ifs’, or the unknown? Have you lost sight of the faithfulness He has shown as you have journeyed through the seasons, as you have dealt with the lions and bears in life? Stir up your faith as your recall all He has done for you, remembering He is a God that doesn’t change. His faithfulness of yesterday will be His faithfulness in tomorrow. How He who worked all things out for your good will continue to do so. His same good plans and hope for your future is still there. It is not a time to run or cower, not a time to be slain or kept back by the giants from entering your new season, the promised the land. It is a time to spend with the Lord, a time to dine on Him, snacks will not suffice, you need hearty meals; feasting on His words, they are life to the bones and spirit, be fatted on Him. Then take Him with you, and don’t try to do what He asks on your own, you need Him in order to accomplish what is ahead. Continually drink from the Well Spring of life, being refreshed, revitalized, that you do not grow faint or weary. Then go valiantly into the new season in the Lord’s Presence and Power, His Grace and Providence, to slay the giants and take possession of the promises.

Keeping the Faith Take It with You When I first met Father Thad I was a Baptist minister and he was the priest at the neighborhood Catholic parish. Thad was an astonishing man, a depository of mind-warping experiences, not the least of which was a personal story I loved to hear him tell. A parish he once led desperately needed to expand its ministry. But one man in the parish absolutely resisted, always squelching prospective change by saying something like, “My grandfather gave the land for this church; my daddy cleared the trees for the building; and we’re not going to change anything” (Catholics don’t have a monopoly on this sentiment). Thad finally had enough. In his remarkable way, he secured a diocese blessing and obtained a piece of land on the other side of town. He called the local house builders, and had the church relocated! I have this charming picture in my mind of the church, steeple atop, rolling down the road on stilts led by a vestment-clad Father Thad, reading the gospel and splashing holy water along the way. When I first heard that story I told Thad, “If you were a Protestant, you could have just started another church.” His response was priceless: “Why start another church, when you can take it with

you?” Truth told, that is pretty good ecclesiology. Ecclesiology is what seminarians call the “doctrine of the church.” It answers the question: “What is the nature of the church?” After several hundred years of modernity and religious institutionalism, more and more people are recognizing that the church is not a building. The church is a people, not a place. It is a living movement, not a fixed address. When the last homilies, sermons, songs, testimonies, and prayers are offered at your congregation or parish on Sunday morning, you don’t leave the church. You will leave a specific gathering of the church, certainly, but you take the church with you – because the church is you. You take it on the road, across town, into your workplace or university, into your living room, classroom, and board room: You embody the presence of Christ in the world. We will not be defined so much by “where we go to church,” but by whether or not we will be the church once we leave the building. As Father Thad put it so accurately: “Why start another church, when you can take it with you?”

To start, to live, and end each day. To breathe, to be, to give, to bear, the weight of life and all I care. In every Season, every storm. Every good thing, every thorn. The one we skipped earlier. Of course, there is no picture here because this baby was never brought into this world. He or she began life created by God but was at some point during the nine month period determined to be not so beautiful. In fact, he or she was determined to be a problem or a burden, perhaps maybe an inconvenience. At this point, some of you readers may be offended, hurt, angry or sad. Let me first say that if you have made a poor choice in the past (regardless how poor), there is healing, forgiveness and grace in the loving arms of Jesus, our Savior. Remember, you too were that beautiful baby created in His image long ago. He can and will restore you if you surrender the pain and regret to Him. However, if you or anyone else does not see a problem with ending the lives of babies (and I may add in a rather hideous way), then I would challenge you to do some thoughtful soul searching. Many people don’t like to discuss this issue for fear of offending and choose instead “tolerance”. That is what many Germans chose as they sang louder in their churches in order to drown out the
sound of the screaming Jews on the trains going by on their way to die. We need to speak up for the innocent and voiceless. There are two events coming this month where you can support the cause of these beautiful babies. On Sunday, October 6th from 2:00 – 3:30pm, people will gather along Colusa Hwy in Yuba City and stand as a Life Chain in order to quietly and prayerfully defend those babies before those passing by. On October 19th, A Woman’s Friend Pregnancy Resource Clinic will hold its annual fundraiser to help woman considering abortion to choose to carry their babies to term. (If you cannot attend these, please be in prayer for them and ask God to reveal what you can do to support life). Former athlete-turned-senate candidate and TV commentator Craig James says he’s not going to be quiet about his dismissal from Fox Sports Southwest. The NFL Pro Bowler was hired recently by Fox Sports Southwest as a college football analyst but in short order was given the boot – not because of a bad job, but because Fox Sports stated his views, which reflect traditional biblical belief, clashed with the network’s human resources policy. James had just finished his first show on Fox Sports Southwest the previous evening when he got a call saying his services were no longer needed. “My phone rings, and I see it’s the general manager, and I’m thinking, ‘Boy, I’m already getting a promotion!’ [But] he let me know that my services were no longer needed and didn’t tell me exactly what was going on,” he explains. “ I found out the next morning that it was based on my position, my biblical belief from what I had said back a year earlier ... at least a year earlier in the U.S. Senate campaign ... that marriage is between a man and a woman.” James, who had previous worked for ESPN, ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in May 2012. During his campaign, he stated he would not march in a “gay pride”

parade, that homosexuality was a choice, and that those who engage in homosexual relations would have to answer to God. He is hopeful his termination from Fox Sports for holding a biblical view on marriage is a wake-up call to all like-minded believers. “They’ve got to stand up and be heard,” he urges. “I do think we’re at a fork in this road in this country and we have got to be heard. I believe brothers and sisters have got to be bold and passionate because the other side is being bold and passionate – they’re being heard and we’re not. And I just believe that that is important. That, to me, is the message that has to come from this.” And he’s not discouraged, explaining his goal in life isn’t necessarily based on being a successful broadcaster. “This is a time where evil prevails when good people do nothing, and you can’t shine light on darkness unless the light shows up – and I am prepared to take the arrows,” he shares. “It’s not about me, and I guess that’s where the calm comes from. I know that the Lord has placed this in my life for a reason. He knows my goal in life. My goal in life is that when I meet my maker, he says: Well done, my good and faithful servant. I don’t want to let him down in this episode.” James made his comments Wednesday on American Family Radio’s “Focal Point.”

81 Christians Killed in Pakistan’s ‘Deadliest-Ever Church Attack’ By Anugrah Kumar, Christian Post At least 81 Christians attending Sunday worship service in their historic church were killed and 131 others were wounded after two Taliban suicide bombers stormed the building in northwest Pakistan. The victims of what is being called the deadliest-ever attack on Christians include 37 women. Blood, body parts and pages from the Bible could be seen at the church after the attack, Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper said, calling it “the deadliest ever (attack) targeting Christians in Pakistan.” About 400 worshippers were exchanging greetings after the service at the 130-year-old All Saints Church in the city of Peshawar when the two bombers, each carrying about 6kg (13 pounds) of explosives, launched the attack. The walls were pockmarked with ball bearings that had been packed into the bombs to cause maximum carnage in the busy church, the newspaper said. “I saw myself in the air and then on the ground inside a huge fire of ball,” Sabir John, a church member who lost one of his arms in the blast, told The Guardian. “I’ve never seen such piles of human bodies,” Arshad Javed, chief executive of Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital, told Wall Street Journal. All Saints Church comes under the Church of Pakistan denomination, a
united church that is part of the Anglican Communion and a member church of the World Methodist Council. There are about 70,000 Christians in Peshawar. The community accounts for about two percent of the 180 million people in Pakistan. Sections of the country’s Christians reacted with anger. Protest marches were held across Pakistan to demand protection. Christians are also routinely targeted by Islamist extremists with accusations under the country’s notorious anti-blasphemy laws. The bombers were between the ages of 20 and 22, according to reports. Speaking to Reuters, a faction of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying, “(The Christians) are the enemies of Islam, therefore we target them. We will continue our attacks on non-Muslims on Pakistani land.” The TTP faction, created to kill foreigners to avenge U.S. drone strikes on Taliban and al Qaeda operatives, told Agence France Presse, “We carried out the suicide bombings at Peshawar church and will continue to strike foreigners and non-Muslims until drone attacks stop.” Muslim minorities, including Shias and Ahmaddiyas, also often face attacks by Sunni terror groups in Pakistan. Ex-Mormon Shares Secrets From the Church of Latter-day Saints By Tyler O’neil , CP Reporter A Christian professor and evangelist said that after 30 years in the Mormon Church, she came to a unique realization – the Bible is more accurate than the Book of Mormon, and God is bigger than the transcendent man worshipped by the “Latter day Saints” (LDS). “I began to feel like somebody was pulling back the curtain in Oz,” Lynn K. Wilder, associate professor of special education at Florida Gulf Coast University, former tenured professor at Brigham Young University, and author of Unveiling Grace: The Story of How We Found Our Way Out of The Mormon Church, told The Christian Post in an interview. She contrasted the Mormon and Christian churches, unmasking LDS secrets – polygamy, racism, and a fundamental distrust in the Word and Power of God. When Wilder and her husband, Mike, searched for a church home following their marriage, they found most churches “boring and out of touch,” she said. She had also been reading the Old Testament thoroughly and became convinced that “these must be latter days,” since Israel had returned to its homeland. Mormon missionaries knocked on her door, spoke about the “latter days,” and welcomed the Wilders into a close-
knit community. “They take you in, they love on you, they began to supplant my biological family,” Wilder explained. Joining the church gave her and her husband a higher status in the college and church communities. In 1999, Brigham Young University offered her a job. U p o n moving to Utah, however, the professor recounted new discoveries – the Mormon scriptures still preach racism and polygamy, despite LDS public denials. “The Bible doesn’t teach that the mark of Cain was dark skin,” she explained, “but the Book of Mormon does.” She noted that the mark of Cain is in other Mormon scriptures, too, besides the Book of Mormon. It wasn’t until her son Micah left the Mormon Church, however, that Wilder considered questioning their doctrines, she said. Refusing to present him to the high council for excommunication, she and her husband sent him away, and he encouraged them to read the New Testament. “Mormons believe that the Bible

Their scripture tells of a “great apostasy” following the death of the apostles, such that there was no true church until Joseph Smith founded Mormonism in 1830. But when Wilder read the New Testament, she was mesmerized. “I became consumed with this God of love, the God of grace,” she said, noting that Mormons believe in works-based salvation. According to the LDS church, your deeds get you into heaven, she explained, while “in Christianity, Christ did all the work on the cross.” The LDS church also teaches that Jesus failed to hold His church together, the professor noted. She quoted Joseph Smith’s History of the Church, where the Mormon founder wrote, “I have more to boast of than any man had. I am the only man who has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam…. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it.” Wilder said she believed that God is strong enough to keep His church together and to preserve the message in the Bible. In Mormonism, however, God is not omniscient or omnipotent, “he is a man, basically, who is continuing
to progress and I can be on that same journey,” she said. The former BYU professor explained that, according to LDS doctrine, the best Mormons will proceed to become gods like the creator. Women can only achieve this if they are married, and only apostates – those who reject the LDS church – will go to hell with Satan and his minions. Even Hitler and murderers, by contrast, will reach the bottom level of heaven, she said. The ex-Mormon recalled that, when she turned to Jesus, she began to see signs of the personal Biblical God (the Mormon God is not personal, she alleged) touching many aspects of her life. Her book tells the story of a picture of Christ that survived a burning building, and of a Billy Graham sermon lodged deep in her memory. Wilder testified that a buyer showed up at her house the day after she and her husband had decided to withdraw from the Mormon Church, and a college dean offered her a job for which she had never applied. “Christianity is wonderful because of God,” she said. “He’s created for all of us a new family, a new life, and the most amazing trust in Him because of what we watched Him do.” In addition to teaching, she and her husband run a ministry dedicated to “helping Mormons understand a bigger God, trust the Bible, and give a different Jesus a chance.” She said they aim to reach the thousands of Mormons who left the LDS church – often to revert into Atheism or Agnosticism.

When Fake Love Seems Real by Kole Farney Many people who reject Christianity do so because of a perceived lack of love in churches. This rejection has caused a reactionary trend that seeks to soften the disapproval of sin and magnify love. In order to reach those people who think teaching about specific sin is graceless and unloving, churches have closed the business of opposing evil. Being wise in their own eyes, many churches have found themselves giving approval to those who practice all kinds of unrighteousness (Rom. 3:32). Slander, murder, strife, homosexuality, envy, disobedience to parents and other sins that are normalized and approved by our society, are regrettably approved by many churches as well (see Rom. 3:18-32). We think: let’s celebrate our differences, smile, think cozy thoughts, and get along. In the eyes of the world, the highest form of love has become unrestricted tolerance of sin and sinful people. What can be done when that which is not love is said to be the highest love, and that which is authentic love is stamped as bigotry or intolerance? First, we must remember the relationship of love to sin. The beloved apostle says, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [the
satisfying sacrifice] for our sins” (1 John 4:10). The love of God in Jesus is all about delivering people from sin. The world says that love ignores sin, but the Scripture asserts that love exposes it. The cross of Jesus Christ is the greatest display of love the world has ever known. It is also the clearest
demonstration of our sin. The only Son of God was slaughtered as a wrath-bearing sacrifice. Therefore, to speak of love without referencing the sinfulness of man is a grave misrepresentation. How then can we speak of love if our mouths will not utter the truth that men and women are lost in sin? Second, we must refuse to call evil good in the name of tolerance. Listen to Isaiah, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isa. 5:20).
Redefining good and evil apart from God and the Bible is very dangerous. Woe to us if we try. A comprehensive rebranding effort works for flailing companies, but it will not work for the church. If, in the name of tolerance, we stop speaking about the great need for salvation made plain by sin, then the cross of Jesus is useless and our love is fabricated. Calling evil good will not change the truth. Suppose this is the sort of church you attend. A church where sin is not serious and the cross of Christ is not properly applied. How can you make a difference? Two things must be done if undiscerning tolerance is to be ousted as the imposter that it is. First, you must realize that judgment of sin is a very prevalent truth in the Bible. You could say, “But the Bible is all about love and forgiveness, right?” From Genesis to Revelation, the forgiveness of God is necessary because wrath and judgment are real. Chemotherapy is necessary only when cancer is present. The forgiveness provided by the cross is the greatest love, not because it ignores sin, but because it deals with it. Second, you yourself must do something in light of judgment and salvation. Maybe you have been thinking that letting sin remain in your own life or the lives of others around you has been the most loving thing to do. Consider, however, a man walking toward the edge of a cliff blindfolded. He does not see the
edge approaching, and likes the feeling of the blindfold on his face. The merely tolerant person lets him proceed because he does not want to offend the man by pointing out his error. The loving person runs after the man, pleads with him to remove the blindfold and see the reality of his coming destruction. If the tolerant person is blindfolded himself, that is one thing, but if the tolerant person sees clearly that the man will soon fall, that is another. The professing Christian who forsakes the truth of wrath and judgment upon sinful men and women, forsakes love. Real love points out the judgment that is coming and how to escape. On Sunday, a drone strike killed six militants and wounded four in Pakistan’s tribal area of South Waziristan. “These drone strikes have a negative impact on the mutual desire of both countries to forge a cordial and cooperative relationship and to ensure peace and stability in the region,” Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who had proposed peace talks with the TTP earlier this month, called the attack “cruel,” and said it is against the tenets of Islam. “Terrorists have no religion and targeting innocent people is against the teachings of Islam and all religions,” Sharif said in a statement. “Cruel acts of terrorism reflect the brutality and inhumane mindset of the terrorists.” The Pakistani government has announced three days of mourning were announced, and formed a four-member committee to gather evidence based on accounts of witnesses. Political parties agreed to hold peace-talks with the Taliban earlier this month. However, Imran Khan, who heads the regional ruling party, sought to highlight the futility of the federal government’s peace efforts with the Taliban. “Isn’t it strange that whenever peace talks are pursued, these attacks take place, and I want to point out that there was also a drone strike today,” he told reporters.

In memory of Reverend Dana Andre Poe, Pastor Lighthouse Christian Center, Olivehurst, California November 5, 1954 – September 16, 2013 Pastor Dana Poe went to be with his Savior on September 16th. Please pray for his wife, Linda and his family, as well as his congregation in their time of grief and transition. Below is a personal tribute to him by Sandi Juri. When I sought the Lord about what I should write about Pastor Poe, the word “legacy” came immediately to mind. To make sure I really understood what a legacy was, I “googled” it and checked several dictionaries for a definition. Most referred to property or money left by an individual. I knew that wasn’t what God had in mind.
Kernerman English Learner’s Dictionary defines legacy as “something from a previous time that has influence now”. That made more sense. Pastor Poe’s legacy certainly wasn’t about money or property. It was so much more. From the time I walked into Lighthouse Christian Center (LCC) about two years ago, I was impressed with Pastor’s ability to communicate the Word in such down-to-earth, relevant terms. He obviously spent many hours hearing from the Lord and studying the subject matter for his sermons. I had heard many excellent sermons over the years, but these were different. Pastor backed up every point in his homilies with multiple scriptures. He left a legacy of a new appreciation for the Word – a desire to dig deep to find “gems” like the ones he uncovered in his studies. As a man of God deeply in love with the Lord, he also demonstrated that love through his relationships with his family, his congregation, and the many persons affiliated with the Pentecostal Church of God throughout the United States. He was respected by all who came in contact with him. His legacy in love is reflected in his deep devotion to his wife, Linda, and to his children, all of whom are serving the Lord, as well as in the network of believers from coast to coast who have been impacted by his ministry.

They learned by his example to believe that the Lord would provide for their every need. He always put others needs before his own. He left a legacy of trust. He left a legacy of joy. He truly delighted in his wife, in each of his children, including his daughters-inlove, and especially in his granddaughter Elizabeth. His smile and laughter were contagious. His sermons were always sprinkled with humor and laughter. We in the congregation looked forward to coming to church to share in that joy. He was generous, both with his finances and with his time. Though he spent 3 mornings a week in dialysis for the past several years, he was always available to minister to those in his congregation, wherever they might be. Whenever another congregation within 100 miles or so was having a revival, or the youth were having an all-nighter, he was there. He never put his own comfort
ahead of supporting other ministries. He left a legacy of caring for others. Gone, but not forgotten… may we live on in your legacy, Pastor... we love you and look forward to our reunion day! And I close with his favorite phrase…”To God Be the Glory!!!”

At the young age of five, Brian Naglee worked with his dad on his Smartsville ranch. His dad, a great father and Christian example, taught him early in life the value of work. “Son, you need to learn to enjoy your work”, the older, wiser man told young Brian. Those were some of the values imprinted on him as he grew. That is probably why when other kids were partying and “hanging out”, Brian was hard at work mowing lawns. He stayed away from trouble by throwing himself into two areas: his work and Boy Scouts. He achieved Eagle Scout status as well as Bronze and Silver Palms. Brian was just as passionate about his work. His peers laughed as they drove
by him thinking him the fool as they watched him sweat with his mower in hand. Yet, he knew then that he would be the one laughing soon. Brian earned a reputation for excellent performance and would have a full-time lawn mowing/ landscaping business called Four Seasons Landscaping by the time he was finished with high school. Business continued growing and because of his passion for his work, he enrolled in Yuba College to study Ornamental Horticulture, in which he earned his A.A. degree. Brian’s love of learning what he specialized in continued and he still to this day takes twice as many classes as necessary in order to be the best he can be for his customers. Remembering another one of his dad’s thoughts “Always keep your customers happy”, Brian still
wants to know everything there is to know about his field. His hard work has paid off in many ways. While most of his peers were still looking for a party and a job, Brian was able to buy his first house at the age of 20. Though not a “partier” in his younger days, Brian admits to his vices and acknowledges that even though

COMMUNITY he was raised by Godly parents and always attended church, he didn’t have a real relationship with God until 1982. After some close calls at high speeds on his motorcycle, he received a wake up call from God and realized that the Lord had given him a second chance. Brian committed himself to the Lord at the age of 25 and switched “from bar-hopping to church-hopping” Soon he learned the blessing of tithing and his business really took off! After starting to tithe, Four Seasons Landscaping tripled in business! Not all was great in his life though and he had suffered a divorce but even through that God was using it for blessing. Out of that came his daughter Jennifer and he was led to a Divorce Recovery Program. Through the program, he met the love of his life, Susan, his wife. Susan helps in the business, which in 1997 was changed to All Seasons Tree and Turf Care and is now incorporated. In addition to her role in the business, Susan is busy with a houseful of people. They have 4 children and 8 grandchildren, some of whom live with them along with Susan’s mom. These days Brian is still mowing lawns but he also very busy doing much more as the premier “tree doctor” in town. He is often called upon to consult and diagnose problem or “sick” trees. He also does a lot of spraying for pests and other problems. Brian still loves his work but his passion is mostly for how he can share the Lord with clients, peers, and everyone else he comes in contact with through his work. He wants people to “Look up and be ready!” He’s excited to save trees but so

Elija was found outside of Arusha in an area known as Sekei. He was abandoned by his mother or another relative on December 3rd, 2009. A lady found him crying and took him to the Police Station. The police advised the woman to take care of the child while they tried to find the parents or a relative. The police brought the child to the Social Welfare when the woman taking care of the baby was unable to care for him any longer. Elijah looked faint, had lost hope and his body was tired when he arrived at Samaritan Village. He was sick because of a lack of enough food and a balanced diet. Elijah is doing well now.

Suppose It Was Your Child They Wanted To Kill? by Dave Kugelman Please accept my apologies for the sensational headline. I really need to capture your attention. So often, Christians (yes, I include myself in this appropriate criticism) are both pathetic and apathetic when it comes to being more intentional in our efforts to speak out for the sanctity of life and speak out against the horrific demonic act of aborting our pre-born children. Do we care enough to get involved? I hope your answer is yes. If so then please mark your calendar to participate in Life Chain Sunday, October 6th. Many Christians across the country will stand together along busy streets and highways publicly displaying signs that communicate the pro-life message. It saddens me that many Christians have termed this topic political and therefore choose to ignore it. Though much of the public discussion on the issue of life seems to fall into the political category, it is not political, it is a moral issue. I will personally confess that I do not do enough for the Pro-Life cause. However, with that said, many of us can do something. Would you please consider joining with many Christians on Life Chain Sunday from 2:00 to 3:30 along Colusa Avenue in Yuba City? And please challenge your pastor to get your church involved. I cannot think of any good reason for any church not to participate. Here is the Bible verse that calls us to action: Ephesians 5:11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. EDITORIAL IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SECEDE…

I read in the paper recently that there is a growing secession sentiment among some of California’s more rural counties. This rising secession movement is driven by the very same inequities that triggered the Colonies to break away from Jolly Old England. You know, that whole taxation without representation bug-aboo that brewed tea in Boston’s Harbor. I know, technically we have representation but the representation afforded rural Californians is so disproportionate to that of the ultraliberal urban left coast that it is rendered impotent. This leaves water rights, agriculture, spending, taxation, social and moral issues in the hands of urban bureaucrats more concerned about social justice than the nuts and bolt issues that hold things together. With a super majority of liberals in both houses of our state legislature, and a governor who answers to the name, Moonbeam, California is quickly becoming a state of rainbows and lollypops. And odds are not good that our more conservative voices can rise above the din of social activists and special interests. Sacramento is cranking out laws faster than lawmakers can pocket their… ah…oh, let’s just call ‘em…perks. The main problem with many of these bills is they go beyond the scope of reason, redraw constitutional restraint and little consideration is given to potential consequences. All this, in unison with an ideologically driven judiciary, leaves little room for compromise. Oh, and on top of all that, our state attorney general and governor have somehow acquired
the right to pick and choose which laws they will defend in court (prop 8 comes to mind). This is all very concerning to Christians who have seen the state’s education codes gutted of God and stuffed with all kinds of perversion, and school curriculum rewritten to mandate the glorification of “alternative lifestyles” (non-pc language read as…immoral lifestyle). And now a new law, set to go into effect January 1, 2014, allows students from kindergarten through 12th grade to choose what restroom and/ or locker room they prefer to use… regardless of their God given gender. In plain English, Sacramento is so over the rainbow, it no longer represents me or my Christian values. How in the heck did this happen? Well, in my opinion: When those living “alternative lifestyles” are elected lawmakers…they immediately set to the task of writing bills that legitimize “alternative lifestyles.” And when you have a legislature awash in a sea of bobble-head liberals who nod anything into law that makes them feel good about themselves…what else can we expect? You know, the more I think about it, this secession idea is looking pretty darn sweet. We can build a state of reason…a state of Godly Morality and let Moonbeam and his minions skip off into the sunset singing Kumbaya. But that is not what we are commanded to do. We are commanded to go forth into all nations making disciples. And yes, that includes... The State of California.

AS WE SEE IT Facebook: Having “Friends” and Being “Liked” I enjoy using Facebook regularly and I try to use it for productive purposes. I rarely play games (or respond to “requests” for it) but I do use it as a way to keep up on what’s going on in my “community” (people and events I’m interested in). I also use it often to “message” people with a question or a word of encouragement. I don’t post much of my daily activities on my personal account, but I do post regularly on my Ambassador page. I would encourage you to “like” the Ambassador Newspaper page to receive my posts about upcoming events, news items, Ambassador contests/activities, etc. It is interesting, however, how Facebook has redefined some relationship terms such as “friend” and “like”. I remember years ago as a kid in school wondering and talking about who our real friends were and if that girl “likes” me or “like likes me”! Of course, I have read about and even personally know happily married couples who “met” on Facebook. It is possible to have a meaningful relationship that started out online. I know someone who met a good friend online and after years of friendship finally went to see her. They waited with much anticipation and hugged emotionally when meeting in person for the first time. Yet, that is not the norm. How many of your Facebook
Seth Halpern - Editor friends would you invite to your birthday party? Recently, I was on Facebook and noticed how many “friends” were available in my “Chat” window. I also took note of the fact that most of them were “friends” that I had very little interaction with or had never personally met! About 650 people “like” the Ambassador page, but some are from another country and don’t even speak English. Some of my nearly 500 friends, I have never met or spoken with. Others, I met once, but would not recognize in the store. They are friends of friends. So, started decluttering my “chat” window of people who I don’t chat with. That got me to thinking…the Bible says we are “a friend of Jesus” (John 15:14,15). So, I wondered if some of us think of it as a “Facebook style” friendship with God or a real friendship. Have you developed that relationship with Him by “chatting” with Him regularly so that when you meet Him you will run up to give Him a huge, emotional embrace. Or will you give a cordial handshake and say “Nice to meet you”? If your answer is the latter, it might be time to log out of Facebook and log in to the “Good Book”!
