Seth Halpern He burst into our lives as the silly but sweet alien Mork from Ork leading a generation to say “ Nanu Nanu”. He had a long career making us laugh with lightning speed jokes that came faster than we could process them. He made us cry in award winning dramatic performances. Then he hung himself with a belt while his wife slept in another room. Robin Williams, the man many called the funniest man on the planet. killed himself in a horrible fashion. We wish it were just a prank, trying to get us to laugh, or maybe a tabloid gimmick for some PR. No, unfortunately, it is true and more than one generation of fans are stopped in their tracks wondering how this could happen. It wasn’t for lack of fame. Williams was

a household name for decades with no sign of fading away. He had a new TV series this past season. It wasn’t for lack of achievement. He managed to go from the #1 stand-up comedian to winning an Academy award for a dramatic role. Some have said it could be money. I’m not sure, but he certainly earned plenty and his work was still in demand (he has several films yet to be released). Not only did he do “well” but he did “good”. Raising millions of dollars for charity in many years of Comic Relief. Story after story tells of Williams’s kindness and generosity. He stated that fame and fortune wasn’t enough. So, what could drive someone who “had it all” to take his life and in such a drastic way? It was well known that Williams had

battled addiction for years. He had gone through several rehab programs and in 2006 spoke to Diane Sawyer in a network interview about his addiction. News of his hidden diagnosis of Parkinson’s have some thinking that he didn’t want to go through the pain deterioration of the harsh disease. Yet, another celebrity, Michael J. Fox, is publicly enduring Parkinson’s while enjoying career success. Some would say that He needed God and rightly so. He did say in a few interviews that he was glad to know “a loving God”. He spent some time in church through his life. Yet that didn’t seem to help. There is no record or evidence that he made a strong commitment to Christ. His friends tell of his struggle with depression and even some of his own jokes hint at

his sadness beneath the laughter. We don’t know when the problem began, but it seems clear that he did not have a happy childhood. Still most people, even suffering more difficult childhoods, don’t take such drastic and permanent actions. This was no simple bout of sad feelings. Williams battled clinical depression. This may have led to the substance addictions as a way of coping with the pain. Some in the Christian community might say that God will always heal depression, “After all, isn’t simply a lack of faith or trust in God that causes depression?”. NO! Many committed Christians suffer with clinical depression. Clinical depression is a physiological condition where the brain doesn’t produce the chemicals (Serotonin,

INSPIRATION GROWING DOWN by Paula McBride Hogar Para Ninos, Vicente Guerrero, Mexico I spend my free time with babies. I suppose I could exercise to work off some taco-induced flab, or boot up Rosetta Stone to improve my Spanish, but I love the babies and find myself in the orphanage nursery after work and on weekends. That’s why the “sweet young man from Chicago” had me in tears, too, before he barely started his testimony in our Friday chapel service. The nursery supervisor, Amy, posted it to Facebook this way: “This morning in sala my heart welled and my eyes leaked. A sweet young man from Chicago stood up and confessed that he came on the mission trip with his group feeling distant and disconnected from God. He also came with full expectations of hard manual labor out in the hot sun. To his surprise, he was assigned to the nursery to play with the babies. I can tell you firsthand that he was a delight to our little ones; he would lie down on the floor and get buried in little giggling brown bodies! He went on to share that he had observed that babies have one thing to give to the adults that care for them: trust. They trust us to wipe their noses, change their diapers....to fully take care of them.

He said he recognized in himself the need to put his trust in the Lord again to “grow down” and become like a baby before God.” I wonder if that man knows how foundational and correct he is in the idea of growing down. Jesus taught in Matthew 18:3-4, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like the child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus and the apostle John are tender in their frequent use of the words “little children.” For them, it’s more than just a term of endearment; it’s a description of how we are supposed to be. You may be arguing, “If we are to grow down and be babies, how will the work get done? Who will be the Christian soldiers? I thought we were to stand firm and put on the whole armor of God!” Yes, that’s a troublesome tension in the upside down economy of the kingdom of God where the lowest are highest. Perhaps we need to sit with Jesus, who made Himself a baby when He entered our world, and listen as He gives the first beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

THIS MONTH: “Finding Godly Counsel” Is getting ‘counseling’ a sign that we don’t trust God, or there is something wrong with us? The disciples were a little slow in understanding and they had Jesus! If we isolate ourselves out of fear or embarrassment, then we can fall and even cause others to be lead astray. Here’s what the Bible has to say: • He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. (Proverbs 10:17 NIV) • Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory. (Proverbs 11:14 NASB) • The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. (Proverbs 12:15 NASB) • A wise man will hear and increase in

learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel. (Proverbs 1:5 NASB) • Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16 NIV) We must know it is good to keep wise counsel. It is not a sign of weakness but a sign of a desire to grow in our relationship with God and others. We should be sure to always ask God first: James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV)

We struggle with our heart and soul. Seeking things to make us whole. Planning, working to one goal, My Father says, ‘Be Still’. We circle round in vanity, Fighting man’s insanity. Problem solving, proving right… How to ever follow Light, but My Father says, ‘Be Still’. Revelations come and go We question that we do not know. Hope and fear tied up in One, The Morning Star, The Holy one. In Peace and War, where is His Will? and yet…..My Father says, ‘Be Still.’ I know not why or where or who, Is right or wrong, false or true. Why people do the things they do, and have no fear denying you. In such a world, so sick so ill, Remind us Lord, Your Words, ‘Be Still.’

Psalm 46:10, ‘Be Still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’

INSPIRATION DEATH OF A FUNNY MAN By April James The death of Robin Williams causes one to stop and think. What could the hopelessness be inside a man, who by the world’s standards had it all? He was loved, had popularity and a successful career. He was a funny man, always laughing and making people laugh, now his laughter is silent, leaving others to weep. What could bring a person to make a fatal unchangeable decision? How often have we seen a smiling person, never sensing that deep inside they are hurting? That behind the facade something is wrong, something is missing; that they feel there is no hope. Where does hope come from? “Because He lives I can face tomorrow”, how true the song lyrics, as is, We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil 4:13). Sometimes all we can do is face one day at a time. We do it because of the hope we have inside, the hope that comes from knowing Jesus Christ. The hope we have that he will work all things out for good, although in the midst of suffering we can’t imagine how. As Christians we may not talk about certain topics we struggle with; depression, despair, grief, suicidal thoughts; feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, or other sufferings that we don’t think fit into

spiritually acceptable problems. We talk a good talk but, it doesn’t always line up with the truth in our lives. Suicidal thoughts is one such category, after all “Christians should not have such thoughts”. This can then lead to guilt and shame, starting a vicious cycle. Too often we are afraid to admit what we feel inside, lest we appear weak or be rejected. I for one fell into this category at one time. I admire King David; he didn’t hide what he felt, he laid it all out there, the good, the bad, and the ugly. David, like us, was a spiritual being having human experiences, which can be tough. Yet in the midst of hard times David acknowledged who God was and praised him. 2 Thessalonian 3:16 talks about being in peace in all situations; our hurts are situations that need peace. Hurts don’t often heal by covering or ignoring them. If we have a deep abscess the doctor has to open it up, expose it, in order to clean it out so it will heal – inside out. If it remains covered it festers and worsens, so it is with our inward negative feelings. The tragedy of Mr. Williams’ death is not because of who he was; it is tragic because each person’s life is precious, yet he felt it hopeless. Let good come from his death.

National Life Chain Sunday, October 5, 2014 National Life Chain Sunday 2014—on October 5, across the U.S. and Canada— will provide a visible and resolute voice for voiceless children who are threatened by the surgical abortionists’ cruel instruments or by the deadly chemicals in abortive birth controls. The location and time of each Life Chain will be posted at www.LifeChain.net (by state in the U.S. and by province in Canada). In this our 27th year of public witness on behalf of rejected Preborns, Life Chain will again fill sidewalks in hundreds of cities and towns (over 1500 in 2013). Sign messages will include “Abortion Kills Children”, “Adoption The Loving Option”, “Jesus Forgives and Heals” and other poignant signs available to participants, plus original, creative messages approved by local coordinators. In brief, Life Chain is an earnest ecumenical prayer ministry rightly viewed as an afternoon extension of Sunday morning worship. Pastoral leadership is key, idle talk is shunned, and the foundational intent of each Chain is to provide God an outreach to anoint and work through. Only He can defeat the powerful spiritual forces that crafted the abortion holocaust now ravaging America and Canada, but God

has assigned His church a strategic role. And how strategic is that role? Renown missionary Arthur Matthews reminded us in Born for Battle that “for every provocation against God’s cause there is provision for victory,” but “without God man cannot” (achieve victory) and “without man God will not” (provide victory). Thus, the rightful heart for prayer against the scourge of legal child killing is surely one of partnering— of partnering our love and protection for local Preborns “being led away to death” (Proverbs 24:10-12) with God’s eternal sovereignty. In preparation for October 5, let us trust in the faithfulness of our almighty God and commit humbly to His cause for desperate Little Ones in our church communities. COMMUNITY Bringing Youth in Our Community to Christ By LaDonna Curteman There are many ways to make a change for good in our community, but sometimes the most obvious way is overlooked, and that is through our youth. Young people are molded by what they see, by what they hear and by whom they associate with. This is the time when young people need to hear about the amazing grace of Jesus Christ and see how it can affect them personally now and for eternity and what better way to do this than through the music of today. Bringing young people to Christ is the purpose for the Community Youth Music Festival being planned for the Yuba/Sutter area. This festival is the collaboration of local Christian youth groups and youth bands with support from Christian-owned businesses and community members who have the desire to reach young people for Christ. Bringing young people together for an evening of fun, food and music will

encourage them to be bold in Christ and help make a positive change in our community. The goal is for Christian young people to “Be the influence.” The Community Youth Music Festival: Band Together for Christ, will be held on September 20, 6 - 9:30 p.m. at Faith Christian High School baseball field, 3105 Hwy. 20, Yuba City. Services provided: This is a 12-month, Christian faith based residential, live-in, discipleship program where men are shown how to live under authority. They are regularly and randomly drug and alcohol tested, taught the value of hard work and given job training so that they can find a job when they graduate. Upon graduation, they are eligible enter our Transition Living Center, a clean and sober house where former students can live in a safe environment and work at their new jobs as they reenter society. Matthew 5:45b (NIV) says, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Last year God sent rain on the festival. We need the rain, but hopefully he sends it afterwards this year. The Live Oak Festival is a celebration of the role agriculture plays in our community. No one imagined 166 years ago that Live Oak’s riches would come from the earth in the form of crops harvested instead of gold. Our community serves as an anchor for the diverse agricultural products grown in California. The Festival begins with a parade in our Historic Commercial District. The parade, which is free to enter, begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs down Broadway. Opening ceremonies follow in Live Oak Memorial Park between O and P streets adjacent to the Live Oak Community Center and the Live Oak Little League baseball fields. The festival opens at 11:00 a.m. and closes at 9:00 p.m. Admission and parking are free!

In addition to the parade, free admission, and free parking, there will be live entertainment, craft vendors, delicious food, children’s activities, and a wonderful and varied car show. Prizes will be given away throughout the day. Everyone is invited to meet Miss Live Oak Festival, and enjoy tons of other good-old-fashioned family fun. Car enthusiasts would be silly to miss participating in our parade and classic car show. This year there will also be a bicycle rodeo where youth are encouraged to bring their bicycles for safety inspections and free helmets. IN THE NEWS The Plight of Christians in Iraq and Africa By John Stonestreet/BreakPoint breakpoint.org In a recent New York Times op-ed, Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, asked “Why is the world silent while Christians are being slaughtered in the Middle East and Africa?” That’s a great question. As Lauder pointed out, “In Europe and in the United States, we’ve witnessed demonstrations over the tragic deaths of Palestinians who’ve been used as human shields by Hamas, the terrorist organization that controls Gaza.” Likewise, the United Nations “has held inquiries” into the goings on in Gaza. “But,” Lauder adds, “the barbarous slaughter of thousands upon thousands of Christians is met with relative indifference.” As Lauder tells Times readers, “The Middle East and parts of central Africa are losing entire Christian communities that have lived in peace for centuries.” And for examples, he cites Boko Haram’s preying on Christians in Nigeria and the “half a million Christian Arabs (that) have been driven out of Syria” during the past three years. And then, of course, there’s ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Lauder writes that “Historians may look back at this period and wonder if

people had just lost their bearings.” He asks why “there are no flotillas traveling to Syria or Iraq” and why “the slaughter of Christians” doesn’t activate the “social antennas” of “the beautiful celebrities and aging rock stars.” Not mincing any words, he called the world’s indifference to ISIS’ mass execution of Christians “obscene.” And of course, he’s right. And the saddest part is that what Lauder writes is true also of Western Christians. In an interview on “BreakPoint This Week”, Georges Sada, a former Iraqi Air Force General and a Christian, told me that Iraq’s Christians had been let down by their brethren in the West. They expected Americans to save them and their ancient community, and it didn’t happen. Why? Well, Rod Dreher, writing in his blog at the American Conservative, has a very plausible theory. He writes that “to many American conservatives, even conservative Christians, the Arab Christians of the Middle East are invisible. As far as they know, all Arabs are Muslims. Foreigners. Unlike us. End of story.” Dreher’s theory is consistent with what the president of Open Doors USA told

Tolerance -- A Tough Business Charlie Butts -- OneNewsNow.com Christian business owners are still under legal attacks for refusing to participate in same-gender “weddings” -– a call that a pro-family research and education organization thinks Americans should be free to make. This week the owners of Liberty Ridge Farm near Albany, New York, which is rented out for birthday parties and about a dozen weddings each year, have been levied a $10,00 fine and ordered to pay two women $1,500 a piece for not allowing the lesbian couple to have their 2012 wedding ceremony on the property. And similar trouble is brewing in Pennsylvania, where The Cake Pros bakery in Schuylkill Haven and W. W. Bridal Boutique in Bloomsburg likewise declined to be part of same-gender weddings. Randall Wenger, chief counsel for the Pennsylvania Family Institute, tells OneNewsNow that the owners are

Christians who recognize that the Bible expressly condemns homosexual conduct. “True tolerance should mean that we’re free to live according to our beliefs without being fined or forced out of business,” he submits. Wenger further points out that “tons” of other businesses in Pennsylvania, where “same-sex marriage” is legal, are willing to accommodate same-gender pairs. “It’s not as if somebody can’t go out and buy a wedding dress or get a cake baked,” the attorney states. “The issue is whether those who have a conscience against doing so need to be forced to do it to be made an example of, because somehow it’s wrong for us to think differently, believe differently or act differently.” He goes on to argue that “in America, we should have the freedom to do that.” Pennsylvania is considering a law that would criminalize actions such as those taken by the two business owners.

There are two sides to the gospel, a growing down and a growing up, but it’s the growing down that must come first. The disconnect with God vanishes as we yield to Him in trust and humility, and then we

grow up in Christ for fruitful service. Well, I had three tacos at a teachers’ luncheon today. I should go for a walk, but the babies will be up from their naps soon. I think I’ll head over to the Cuna (nursery) and practice growing down in my life with Jesus as I love on some babies!

He explained the lack of concern among American Christians for their brethren in Iraq by saying that “the denominations in Iraq aren’t recognized by Americans . . . The underlying attitude is, ‘They’re not us.’” On the other side of the political and religious divide, Dreher continues, “to many American (and European) liberals, all Christians are basically Pat Robertson and Fred Phelps. Christians are the yucky people they dislike at home.” For liberals, “All Christians around the world are the same, and they are always and everywhere the persecutors, never the persecuted. The persecution of Christians does not suit the Narrative.” Well, that narrative is tragically wrong. Canon Andrew White after a recent visit to northern Iraq wrote that he had “never

witnessed anything on the scale, or which has affected [him] quite so dreadfully” as what he saw. The only way things are going to get better is if we work overtime to be the difference to the indifference Lauder wrote about. A place to start might be by making sure, as Dreher suggested, that your pastor gets a copy of Lauder’s op-ed in the New York Times. Why not send it to the White House and the State Department as well? No doubt they’ve read it, but folks, it’s time to let them know that we’ve read it, too. It’s time for Christians in the West to make some noise. I can’t emphasize enough how urgent the need is for action. We have let our brethren in Iraq and throughout the Middle East down before. And if we do so again, “obscene” won’t begin to describe our indifference.

Norepinephrine and Dopamine) that help keep someone thinking clearly. Not that they are “crazy” or delusional. They simply find that very normal stress or worry becomes exaggerated and leads to hopelessness. It is no different than a diabetic needing insulin because their body doesn’t create it. It is no different than the person with high blood pressure who needs medicine to bring the pressure down. God CAN and often does heal these conditions. Although He is able to, it is clear that He does not always choose to heal us in this life. The evidence of that is all around us. If He healed every sickness every time, would we need or long for Heaven? My purpose here is not a theological discourse on healing but to communicate that we need to respond to people in need. Clinical depression is more than feeling bad because of negative circumstances and it is more than feeling

“blue”. People around us with much less than what Robin Williams achieved, battle this disease of Depression. It is important, even critical, that we watch for this in those we know and love. (For warning signs, see sidebar). We need to continue to share Jesus with all people including (and maybe especially) with those battling depression. Yet we should not neglect the reality of a disease because it affects the brain rather than another part of the body. If you know someone who seems to be displaying the warning signs of depression, please connect with them. Ask God how He can use you, listen to the person without preaching or giving advice. When they are finished sharing, pray with them, then give them a few resources including your contact info as well as a Christian counselor or pastor equipped to deal with this condition. I do not deny that there is very much a spiritual aspect to depression and it could be a spiritual attack needing deliverance. However, we need to treat the whole person, Spirit, Soul, and Body. Taking medicine does not show a lack of faith in God. I pray for healing, take medicine for relief and give glory to God for healing when it does take place. I believe heals sometimes using medicine, sometimes without it, and sometimes simply gives us the peace to live through the pain. I also believe that God uses each of us to help because there is no substitute for positive human interaction and influence when it comes to depression. So please be intentional about being part of the solution.

Warning Signs of Suicide These signs may mean someone is at risk for suicide. Risk is greater if a behavior is new or has increased and if it seems related to a painful event, loss or change. • Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself. • Looking for a way to kill oneself, such as searching online or buying a gun. • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live. • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain. • Talking about being a burden to others. • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs. • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly. • Sleeping too little or too much. • Withdrawn or feeling isolated. • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge. • Displaying extreme mood swings. • Additional Warning Signs of Suicide • Preoccupation with death. • Suddenly happier, calmer. • Loss of interest in things one cares about. • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye. • Making arrangements; setting one’s affairs in order. • Giving things away, such as prized possessions.

A suicidal person urgently needs to see a doctor or mental health professional. In an emergency, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255). (Editor’s Note: For local Christian-based resources see page 3 for churches that can help)

EDITORIAL A BRUTAL AND VIOLENT PEACE Jon Skillman Ironically, the major obstacle in the road to peace is…“The religion of peace.” And it appears the true face of Islam is finally beginning to bleed through the veil of peace. The action of groups such as Hamas, Boko Haram and ISIS, among others, has pretty much negated any claim Islam may have as being, “The religion of peace.” I know, I know…I shouldn’t condemn an entire religion for the actions of a few. But there are several reasons that make me do so. First, it’s more than a few. If you search the web for terrorist groups you will find there are many. You will also discover the most common thread binding them together is Islam. Second, the deafening silence from the “moderate” Muslims leads me to believe they will do nothing to impede their “radical” brothers. Third, Islam’s most holy book calls for the death of all infidels (that would include you and me dear Christians) and, even though the Quran does label lying as a sin, a lie told in the defense of Allah is quite okiedokie. So when Islam speaks, what are we suppose to believe? Well, by their actions, when Islam says their goals are to destroy Israel and

western civilization, I tend to believe them. And when they say they will establish a worldwide caliphate and implement Sharia law…I don’t doubt their sincerity. The peace loving members of Hamas seek peace by firing rockets from Gaza, into the cities and towns of Israel, while at the same time, deploying peace envoys through secret tunnels to bomb, kill and kidnap innocent Israeli citizens. They also have a longstanding tradition of lovingly teaching their children to hate. Boko Haram, seeks religious harmony in Nigeria by bombing or torching churches…then shooting or hacking to death parishioners as they flee the flames. They enjoy a good village massacre and kidnapping Christian schoolgirls to sell into slavery while at the same time, lovingly teaching their children to hate. But ISIS is undoubtedly, the most zealous of the peacekeepers. This group makes al-Qaeda look like a pack of Cub Scouts. There is nothing these peaceniks won’t do to bring peace to the world. They have established an expanding Islamic State in parts of Syria and Iraq by simply slaughtering all who stand in their way. Men, women and

SOUL QUAKE With all the bad news going on in the world (as I wrote about in last month’s cover story “Where’s the Good News”), it’s easy to think that the problems are “over there”- Iraq, Israel, Ukraine, even Ferguson, MO is a ways from Yuba-Sutter. But recently, I was reminded that major disasters can hit us in our “own backyard” and affect us personally. We had planned a weekend trip to Napa on August 24th. That’s right. If that date rings a bell it’s because at 3:20am on that day, the Bay Area suffered its worst earthquake since 1989 (and I remember that one very well!). And where was it centered? In Napa, of course. It was felt all around the Bay Area and even folks right here in Yuba-Sutter felt it. I don’t feel anything when I’m asleep, but that’s another story. So, why am I writing about this, you may wonder. Well, the news of the quake upset me so much I was a mess. No, I didn’t suffer any damage or injury and to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t even thinking about those who had. No, I was concerned about my trip! I was also concerned with possibly losing a few hundred dollars with the non-refundable reservation. .Even after hearing about it, I still wanted to go but my wife had the good sense to say “No”. After throwing a toddler-like tantrum, I had to realize that the world does

Seth Halpern - Editor not revolve around me. My “perfect” plan had been thwarted by Almighty God and there was nothing I could do about it. Well, poor me. With all that God has done this wretched soul, I was complaining about His decisions. God was “shaking” me up (pun intended) as well. I should have been praying for the injured but instead I was licking my wounds. After watching some of the news, my selfishness turned to sadness for the real victims. I have never been very flexible (either physically or relationally) but I had to learn Pr.16:9 the hard way that “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” My steps, my plans, and my thoughts were very “redirected” by the Lord and I had come back first to the Lord, then to my wife with my “tail between my legs” in humility before both of them. I’m very grateful that both my God and my wife are very loving, gracious and longsuffering toward me!
