STUDIO PRACTICE Statement of Intent Name

Date Rationale I want to improve my technical skills in print processes, I need to practice the print processes I want to improve in - for me this is lino and monoprint (though I am also interested in screenprint). I also want to continue doing papercut and mixed media pieces and exploring new ways to communicate the tone of voice I am developing. I need to find out more about packaging and branding as I am somewhat interested in creating illustration for packaging - particularly for indie brands, and I have an interest in makeup. So maybe makeup packaging. I want to try it that's for sure. I don't want to overcomplicate any of my briefs, or do something I'm not particularly interested in to jump through hoops, as I will make something I am unhappy with and I want to make good art. This was my downfall last year. Simple ideas can be good. Themes / Subjects

Spooky Stuff - Monsters etc Pagan Holidays Music / Live Events / CD's / Album Art Books - Adult fiction / fantasy / not childrens books / not editorial work Feminism / LGBTQ Branding / Packaging - Makeup, Alcohol, Various Products, DVD Box sets Limited edition - Films, Music, Book packages etc. Pattern

Products / Methods of Distribution

Branding / Packaging - Makeup, Alcohol, Various Products, DVD Box sets Limited edition - Films, Music, Book packages etc. Posters Packaging design for products - Makeup, CD booklets, DVD Box Sets. - Novelty limited edition stuff that has illustration on it for some reason or other

Practical Skills / Media / Formats

Traditional Print - Particularly Lino & Monoprint (textures man) Collage / papercut Mixed media - Traditional and Digital used together Experimenting with different ways of using media to create a consistent tone of voice without using the same techniques over and over again or making the same work.

Brief 1:

One a week Monster Girls

Deadline

Ongoing May 2017 Rationale: I like drawing monsters & girls, I want to get better at papercut & Collage so each image must contain some element of this. (Not necessarily the whole image - to allow for experimentation. Must be done within a day - working to a restricted time limit - speed up work making. Brief 2: Draw Neil Gaiman's Stardust - BBC Radio 4 Deadline 26 / 10 / 16 Rationale:

Really quick turnover, similar theme to book covers, could lead into a bigger project after the deadline for the single image. (Perhaps adapting the Folio Soc brief to this book). Practice making a single image successfully for a close deadline.

Brief 3: Pagan Greetings Cards (Cards for Pagan Holidays)

Deadline

[unsure Jan / Feb?]

Rationale: Working with designs, practice lino printing and digital editing to create a design.

Applications of that design - thinking about products etc. Varied kinds of design all with a similar theme / aesthetic - making a collection practicing a tone of voice Brief 4: Travelling Man Deadline 27 / 10 / 2016 Rationale: Another short turnover brief - practicing making something of a higher standard at

a quick pace. Able to challenge my organisation skills as one of the 'leaders'. Limited colour palette and theme - working to constraints - making the constraints work for me. (Even though I helped set them) Brief 5: Buffy - Designs for commemorative box set of DVD's Deadline [unsure: Jan /Feb?] Rationale: Will allow me to research more into packaging - and create designs for packaging /

applying designs to products. Scope for posters / t-shirts / badges etc to be proposed a project for me to be self indulgent and have a lot of fun with.
