mericans are getting old. According to the US Census Bureau, the median age of an American is 36.7 years. Not only are we getting old, but we’re also living longer. The United Nations predicts life expectancy in industrial nations, like the US to increase from 76 years to 82 years in 2050. This is more than double the life expectancy in the 1800s. But, just because we’re getting older doesn’t mean we have to look or even feel older. All you have to do is turn on the tube, go to the mall or surf the Internet and you’ll see hundreds of “youth in a bottle” offers. Some of them are genuinely good and others, well, aren’t worth the bottle they came in. Here’s a rundown on some of the latest trends and what to expect.

Bags Under Your Eyes?

here have been eye creams over the years that have tried to clear these up. Not all of them were successful, of course. In fact, for the most part, they merely just covered up the bags. Vitamin K was touted as a great way to lighten up the circles under one’s eyes. It is a fat-soluble mineral that essentially controls blood clotting. As we age, our skin becomes thinner and thus the blood vessels under our eyes become more visible. Vitamin K, used as a topical application was thought to be able to constrict the blood vessels from dilating. But, it’s been difficult to apply as a topical ointment. There are new ideas on how to lessen the dark circles by “lifting” the skin under one’s eyes. Again, as we age, our skin begins to thin out. By thickening the skin under our eyes, we can lessen the effect of the dilated blood vessels. One natural solution to help with these bags is boost your intake of B-vitamins, iron and Vitamin E. Some companies have even created caffeine laden creams. It’s thought that the caffeine will help shrink the dilated blood vessels, at least temporarily. Retinol, which was highly regarded as an acne solution has been used to also temporarily reduce the dark circles under one’s eyes, because it tends to thicken your skin. Other more expensive treatments include a non-invasive skin treatment called Thermage. It uses a radiofrequency technique to help tone and tighten your skin. While most patients are generally pleased with the results, it is a very costly procedure and likely not for the average person on a budget. Other solutions include “dermal fillers”, which are administered at the doctors’ office. The doctor will inject these fillers to smooth out or soften wrinkles and fine lines under your eyes. Expect to see more use of these radio frequency treatments and also laser use to get correct blood vessel dilation, as well as to stimulate collagen under your eyes.

here are many reasons why our skin begins to sag, not the least of which is the lack diet and exercise. There’s a high correlation that too much sugar is also bad for your skin, not you’re your weight. Collagen, a naturally occurring protein, is one of the main connective tissues in our bodies. As collagen breaks down, our skin begins to sag. It is now commonly believed that sugar substances accelerate the breakdown of collagen. We used to believe that the only way to correct baggy skin was to opt for cosmetic surgery. Another option was to use skin peels to try to tighten up the skin. But, cosmetic surgery is well … surgery and its expensive. And the peels really didn’t work too well. Similar to baggy eyes, one of the prevailing procedures is to inject fillers into the sagging areas. A common filler substance is based on calcium micro particles. And, also just like baggy eyes, another common treatment is the use of Thermage, a radio frequency technology that stimulates collagen growth. Some new developments are making their way into dermatologists’ toolbox … thicker fillers that create more lift and volume in your skin.

Wrinkle, Wrinkle Go Away … and Stay Away!

here is no magic wand for wrinkles, but you can certainly make them a lot less noticeable. One of the prevailing solutions was Retina-A. It was at least a possible solution for wrinkles, after it was found to be useful for acne. But a number of people had undesirable irritation and dryness associated with long-term use of the product. Since Retina-A came on to the market, new solutions have found their way to consumers. They include silicone based topical solutions that essentially fill in the wrinkled spots. These topicals also add other ingredients such as antioxidants to protect your skin from damage. As in other solutions, these topical solutions also contain ingredients which increase collagen production. In addition, adding vitamins, such as C and E help restore your skins defensive system. Consumers need to remember that the injectable solutions are not necessarily cheap and they can be a bit painful. So, in the future, the injections may include some type of anesthetic to dull the pain.

Dimples Anyone?

imples or cellulite are a girl’s worst enemy. Unfortunately, many of us will suffer from this unsightly change in our skin as we age. Some of the prevailing thought for solving this problem includes reducing the water retention in the problem area. By doing so, it makes cellulite less visible. In addition, ingredients that can increase the volume in your skin in those problem areas will also reduce the visual look of cellulite. The most promising types of treatment include radio frequencies, such as Thermage and laser sculpting to smooth out the skin. These treatments, while effective, are also relatively expensive and must be administered by a licensed practitioner.

hin is in, except when it comes to lips. It used to be that the only way to get plump, luscious lips was to get painful and irritating injections of animal collagen. While it did work, it also had a nasty side effect which included swelling, allergic reactions, and didn’t necessarily last too long. Eventually, the industry produced human collagen which dispensed with the allergic reactions, but still did not have much longevity. New solutions that have become available include topical treatments which include antioxidants and hyaluronic acids which help to smooth out wrinkles on your lips as well as make them look fuller. Eventually, these solutions could even help stimulate your body’s own collagen growth.

he perfect skin is wrinkle free, spotless and unblemished. Retina-A made took acne free face to another level when it was introduced thirty years ago. But, as described earlier, it does have a side effect unacceptable to some people … irritation and dryness over prolonged use. In fact, for most adults it’s too irritating, as it was meant mostly for teenage skin. Some of the best home solutions include ingredient salicylic acid. Many solutions also add Retina-A in milder forms which basically give you the added benefit of anti-aging. For adults who have problems with dryness due to Retina-A, many providers are mixing in moisturizers and anti-inflammatories. Finally, there are treatments which deep clean pores. Once the pores are cleaned a pulsed laser of light is used to kill any bacteria that can cause acne to build up.
