Wood Duck On a sunny April morning, I was hunkered in a blind I had placed near a small, woodland pond in northern Minnesota, hoping to photograph waterfowl. Spring is when male ducks are fully plumed with iridescent feathers glowing–all the better to impress hens. This male wood duck swam close to my blind, climbed onto a log in the water, and proceeded to preen its gorgeous feathers. Mother Nature used her entire box of Crayolas when she designed wood ducks.—Bill Marchel
