Focus Laboratories has announced that a clinical study on their VitaSight O3+Maqui Dietary Supplement, conducted by Edward Paul, PhD, was published in the Journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology. Dr. Paul, the creator of O3+Maqui, generated his study “A Combined Regimen of Dietary Supplements Containing Omega-3 Fish Oil and Standardized Maqui Berry Extract Improves Dry Eye Related Symptoms in a Pilot Randomized Interventional Clinical Study,” to conclude the importance of combining omega-3 in a re-esterified triglyceride form with maqui berry to benefit dry eye sufferers. “O3+Maqui is a unique oral approach capable of relieving dry eyes by supporting natural tear production and decreasing symptoms associated with ocular surface disease. Patients experienced a 91% increase in tear film breakup time and a 78% improvement in symptom scores.” Dr. Paul said in a company news release. “O3+Maqui in combination outperformed omega-3, maqui extract, and placebo on OSDI, DED score assessment, MMP-9 and corneal staining.” In his institutional review board-approved, single-site, randomized, interventional, placebo-controlled, comparative, pilot clinical study patients were enrolled and divided into four groups. Patients were evaluated by corneal staining, changes in tear osmolarity values, matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels, Schirmer’s test, and tear breakup time. Patients ranged in age from 26- to 78-years old and were 77 percent female, 23 percent male, with 92 percent being caucasian. “To the best of our knowledge we describe herein the first clinical study to investigate using this combination of supplements to treat patients with DED,” said Dr Paul. His study concluded that dietary supplements of re-esterified omega-3 fish oil and standardized maqui berry extract outperformed re-esterified omega-3 fish oil alone as a treatment for dry eye disease. His creation, O3+Maqui, has patented unigel technology that offers a precise dosage combination of 2,745 mg of purified, highly-refined omega-3 fish oil in a re-esterified triglyceride form and 100 mg of MaquiBright (maqui berry extract) in softgel form. “O3+Maqui represents an effective approach to restore comfort and composition of one’s tears and eye moisture. Now a natural, orally-administered nutrient can soothe your eyes from the inside out by stimulating healthy tear production to restore your eye’s delicate ecosystem,” said Dr. Paul.
