Line

What is the name of the company, organization or individual utilizing this website? The company is Vogue, which is a Fashion magazine publishing company known all over the world. The link to this website is www.vogue.com.

LINE is being used in the design to:

X Create a mood X Organize other elements on the page

___Create texture through illustration

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe how this advertisement or website uses LINE.

The designer who created this website design had a very simplistic creation in mind. The website has an abundant use of line throughout the entire site, but the home page is where the action starts. If the line creation was not existent, then there would be complete chaos with this layout. The lines create a separation and structure to all the headlines, captions, and photos they have to display. The whole structure of the layout is very pleasing, and creates a very easygoing, but strict feeling. For example, the different headlines have underlines and borders of some sort, to show the distinction between what needed to be read first, which would then be separated from the text that follows it. The designer’s intent was to create an accessible, but attractive website, but keep it interesting for the viewer to be entertained. The design is very simple to understand, and doesn’t create a burst of confusion when glancing through it, which is a plus to the designer. This is a fashionable company, so the designer wanted to re-create the company, and make it as simple, but fresh and interesting just like the new fashion trends. So with the website being a clone of what the company is all about, this definitely was achieved in this design.

The use of line in this design has a dynamic impact on the audience that it targets. Whether or not the design was understandable and precise, this would make a huge difference on its success as a website. This being said, also to mention, the different colors that were used with this website are continuous, and create an even greater sense of cohesion with the entire website.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of LINE in this design. Line was used very knowledgeably in this design, and certainly makes a positive feedback for the audience of this company. With the design being very effective, it not only makes the designer look great, but shows off the company very well and creates a better feel for what their company is all about.

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website? The primary audience of this website would be any age, either young or elders. Whoever is interested in the new and upcoming Fashion trends around the globe would enjoy being a part of this magazine. Whether you’re on the website or glancing through one of their multiple magazines, you get the same feel; an organized structure, which is clear-cut and straight to the point.

Shape

What is the product or service being advertised?

SHAPE is being used in the design in the following way(s):

X Photos and illustrations are creating shape through the actual shape and content of the art.

X Line or a line illustration is creating the predominant shape

X Shape is sustaining the viewer’s interest.

X Shape is organizing the page

X Shape is helping the viewer understand the concept

X Shape is leading the viewer’s eye through the design

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe how this advertisement or website uses SHAPE.

The designer of this advertisement was very creative at the least, and created something that attracts the attention of the reader. The Town House Crackers are being advertised as stated above, and to showcase this product, was an abundance of pictures, all family oriented and exciting, that was shaped into the shape of a house (hence, the Town House company.) Other than that, the shape that was created, this being the house, gave the advertisement a sense of happiness that could be shared with any reader who was flipping through the pages of whatever magazine it was that they were reading. The designer themselves could easily have been attempting to make it seem as if these crackers were delicious and a key staple to any occasion. As it seems, there is a “home-y” feeling to this advertisement and that is what makes the connection between the company and the audience it is targeting. The impact this shape has on the audience is pretty powerful, since everyone can mostly relate with family, and spending time with the people you love. Well here, they want to show you that you can do so, and also enjoy these crackers simultaneously.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of SHAPE in this design.

The product that is being advertised is Town House Crackers.

The shape this advertisement created such an impact on readers, since it is a design that cannot be forgotten. Its two simple words: product recognition. Whenever someone enters a store, they will look for the Town House Crackers when in dire need for a snack, thinking they will bring them enjoyment, as seen on their ads that they witnessed at some point in time. So you can see how this affects the way the product is selling. If it is successful, the product is selling. •

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website? The primary audience of this advertisement would be any age range really, as long as they have a love for a good cracker and want to experience how wonderful Town House Crackers taste!

Texture

What is the product or service being advertised?

TEXTURE is being used in the design to:

X Create a particular mood or feeling

___Fill individual shapes or areas

X Reinforce or support the concept of the design

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe how this advertisement or website uses TEXTURE.

This advertisement can almost speak for itself, but if you were to glance at the image the designer chose to use, you would probably get a sense of enjoyment, and maybe even hunger. The pita chips are enlarged in this advertisement and truly show the texture of the chips themselves. When flipping through pages of a magazine, the reader would see this and think “Yum!” or “Wow, that looks pretty tasty!” When you think about why the designer would do such a thing, it’s called marketing. This is an intelligent way to market this product to whoever this company’s audience was. The one thing that will sell a product, especially food, is seeing it up close and personal so that the reader could really get a grasp on what this product is really all about.

By the designer taking their product and blowing it up to show its true texture, it really gives the advertisement a whole new meaning. I think utilizing texture this way, was smart, in fact, brilliant. That is because this is what makes food product sell. If the customer witness’s a product using any of the senses, it may be slightly more appealing to them and that’s when they would go out and purchase that product. There are other ways the designer could have gone about this, but this was the best way. The designer’s intent on this advertisement obviously was to target a certain audience. And in turn, that audience that they were hoping to target, would go out and purchase this product because of the great skill that was used in marketing it to its customers. With no doubt in mind, who wouldn’t ponder over the thought of purchasing this product? The designer was very creative using this technique, as it added depth and a sense of understanding to the reader by showing what the product was all about, as they scanned through the pages of their magazine.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of TEXTURE in this design.

I feel that the use of texture was developed wonderfully in this design. If it were attempted in any other way, I don’t think it would have been as successful. Like mentioned earlier, when selling food products, you want your audience to be able to almost taste that product, while being right in front of their face. You want them to remember that product, and make sure that next time they go grocery shopping, that item is in their cart. The whole point is, you want to make the design memorable.

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website? The primary audience for this advertisement would be any age, whoever would appeal to pita chips, or cinnamon/sugar types of food. This is a very universal product, which anyone could enjoy.

The product being advertised is Stacy’s Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips.

Balance

What is the product or service being advertised?

BALANCE is being used in the design in the following way(s):

X To create a mood.

The product being advertised s Eos Lip Balm.

___Symmetrical balance is reinforcing the message—such as; serious, conservative, sophisticated, stable, elegant, etc. X Asymmetrical balance is reinforcing the message—such as; relaxed, informal, freeform, creative, etc.

___To create visual tension by being obviously unbalanced.

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe in your own words how this advertisement or website uses BALANCE. In using balance to create a message, this designer was really thinking. This advertisement contains an image of a glass bowl, containing multiple lip balms that have a dab of whipped topping on top of them, reenacting as a bowl of ice cream. Surrounding this is a spoon on the right, while there are miscellaneous strawberries on the right just placed randomly. By creating this interesting picture, the designer has created a whole different story. By pretending that this lip balm was in a bowl, ready to be eating, it brings out how “delicious” this product is. And how the reader portrays this message, can be different. You could either see it as a way to entertain the reader, with humor; or simply just being creative and attracting attention to the product by presenting it this way. The asymmetrical balance truly reinforces the message, which is a calmer and natural way. This product was proposed with organic material, and it promotes using organic products. The fruit even adds to being healthy as well, with the flavor of the lip balm being strawberry. This advertisement would present itself to contain approximate symmetry, by the different sized components through the whole ad itself, but it is equally weighted. The bowl itself containing the lip balms is symmetrical, but not with the lip balms included. But the spoon on the left and the strawberries on the right, in addition to the text in the upper-right hand corner, create this “balance” throughout the advertisement. (Hence using the word balance.)

The designer used balance in a way to attract customers, and make them feel calm, and stress free. By using this product, you wouldn’t have to ever worry about your lips being un-moisturized. The impact that balance has on the audience it attracts would be the symmetrical-like layout, but since it is not exact, it really gives is a little more something.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of BALANCE in this design. The use of balance really strikes the audience with aspiration to purchase this product.

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website? The primary audience of this advertisement would be anyone that could be in dire need of lip balm, who may have chapped, or dry lips that could really use a clean, and natural lip balm. This product can be used by any age, at any time, so the audience for this product is actually very universal.

Contrast

What is the name of the company, organization or individual utilizing this website? The product being advertised would be L.A. Colors cosmetics.

CONTRAST is being used in the design in the following way(s):

X Strengthen an idea; support the message. ___To create a contradiction (BIG written in very small type).

X Contrasting colors

___Contrasting values

X Contrasting shapes

X Contrasting texture

X Contrasting typography

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe in your own words how this advertisement or website uses CONTRAST.

This advertisement is very appealing in the use of layout the designer used. If it were without the about qualifications, then it would not have succeeded as an advertisement. This design features a girl who is also wearing the makeup and nail wear herself, and on the bottom of the page, showcases a few of their products. The nail polishes are pouring out; there are palettes of eye shadow, and a textured background that is just a little too much to handle all at once to the human eye. But this is what makes the advertisement stand out. The designer clearly got their point across, and used contrast to their advantage. With cosmetics, you would think a clean and pure message would suit the designer. Not in today’s market. You want your products to stand out from the rest, and look appealing with different strokes of brushes and patterns combined. And that is exactly what the designer has attempted in this design.

The impact this design had on its audience is a wow factor. It really sticks out, flipping through a magazine and coming upon this advertisement. It really does it for the design, and with all the different shapes and patterns used to complete the overall message, it brings it all together as a whole.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of CONTRAST in this design.

I feel that this design works well for the use of contrast. If it were spared on some parts of the advertisement, it would not succeed as well as it would with all these other key elements scattered about the ad. I think that in cosmetics, you want to be unique, and like mentioned earlier, you want to stand out in the crowd. And keeping that in mind that is exactly what the designer created.

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website?

The primary audience of the advertisement would prosper more towards teens or young adults, seeing as it is in the cosmetics department. But it could also target older generations as well. Anyone with an interest in being creative, would get a kick out of this design.

Unity

___Unify the design with consistent elements (grouped/repeating elements)

X Lead the viewer’s eye through the design

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe how this advertisement or website uses UNITY.

The use of unity in this website layout is very predominant. The company’s logo is the letters “TD” inside a green box, with green being their known color in everything to do with their company. On the website, they have various ways they used the green aspect. On the top of the page, consists of their logo of course, and from there is a multitude of green features. Some of the links on the web page are green, in addition to any clickable links such as the search box’s “GO” link. This is a very key way to address the company’s logo, and spread it throughout the whole layout by just using the color of the logo. You can almost not even include the logo on this website, and just look at the contents and the color green, and just assume that it is a website built for TD Bank. It is just a recognizable color, and the company has made it this way for them, which also helps their business. The designer’s intent was to clearly make sure that the viewer understood who the company was, by a quick glance at this home page, which is definitely accomplished. Anybody who is a part of this bank can also speak for the design of the website, because they can quickly recognize their bank, and this design is very simple but has much to say about itself with just using one key color. The use of unity in this design also can help organize the page, and with the different pages attached to the site, their links are also green, and that continues throughout the whole entire website. The use of unity is just so immense that it’s impossible to go onto any page of this website and not see that significant color green.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of UNITY in this design. The use of unity was certainly effective, which is great for this business/ organization. For a company to display itself online, they want a layout that speaks for their business, and shows their professionalism. This layout does all of the above. It not only creates an organized and simplistic design, but is more convenient for the user to navigate through the site.

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website? The primary audience of this website would be any age, any gender; anyone who could hold an account from TD Bank. This website is an easily-navigated place where people can go to look for information on the bank itself, or account holders can sign onto their online accounts. This is a designed website that can reach out to anyone who is in search for information on bank accounts, etc.

Color

What is the name of the company, organization or individual utilizing this website? The company that is utilizing this website is Koleston Hair Color, and the link to this website is http://www.koleston.com/en-SA.

COLOR is being used in the design in the following way(s):

X Creates a mood or feeling

X Creates visual tension and movement

X Provides unity and balance

___Provides structure and forms a grid in a design

___Provides a sense of order

___Creates harmony

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe in your own words how this advertisement or website uses COLOR.

The use of color in this website design was taken into consideration with the product the company was promoting. The color purple is predominantly used on this website, with a cast of a curvy texture in the background, which stands out to make the design look sleek, and easy to understand. The color itself is known to stand for royalty and higher-ranked in society, which gives it a classy feature as well. The use of the picture of the model with the wavy, voluminous hair is used continuously in the slideshow that exists on the site, and the model’s hair looks sleek and shiny as if mocking the design behind them. The product is hair color, and the designer wants it to appear that if you use this company’s products, you will feel like a queen, and look slick like the design presents itself as. The simplicity of the design is noticeable, but like stated, less is more. The design here doesn’t need a multitude of patterns and designs to make it look flashy and artistic, but a bit of a texture and smoothness, and they have a successful website design. The impact this leaves on the audience of the site would be productive, and they would see much more success rather than using some other type of design.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of COLOR in this design.

I think that the use of color in this design is very successful. If it were attempted in any other way, it would not see the great achievement that it has reached by using this design. The designer was also attempting to reach the audience with the sophisticated design, and look very stylish and neat. This design could not be more simplistic, but catches the eye of a trendy individual who is very invested in their appearance. •

Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website? The primary audience of this website would be any aged female, who either colors their hair, or is looking to invest money into hair color for either a business or personal use. With the economy being so negative, hair color is a definite money saver these days, especially for moms who don’t have the money or time to go out to a fancy salon and spend tons on their appearance, this could be an alternative to that and save women loads of money.

Value

What is the name of the company, organization or individual utilizing this website? The individual utilizing this website would be a guy name Mike Kennedy. This is a personal blog. The URL is thisafterthat.com.

VALUE is being used in the design in the following way(s):

X Creates a mood or feeling ___Creates contrast X Creates movement and direction

Please thoroughly explain your answer to the question above and analyze/ describe in your own words how this advertisement or website uses VALUE.

The designer used value in a very interesting way in this website design. The different text types and elements on the page, are a very light version on value. The text on the top of the page that reads “THIS AFTER THAT” is a darkerlight shade, and as the page progresses, the value of the page tends to be a little lighter. The way the designer intended to do this, would be to create a relaxed feeling as a person came upon this website. The website also consists of arrows, that guide you through the page, and where to navigate next. The value of the page also connects with the navigation of the page as well, by it starting with a darker tone, and progressing to a lighter tone as the page scrolls down. A couple different headings and titles are that darker color, then starting to progress all over again as the viewer was to read this website design. The impact the design has on its audience would be that it creates a more easyto-read layout while viewing the webpage. The use of shape is also apparent here as well, with the arrows mentioned earlier, that guide the viewer down the page. But the predominant use of value is very obvious in this design.

Please describe the effectiveness of the use of VALUE in this design. The use of value in this design is used very effectively, and it has created such a simplistic web page layout. But simplistic is not always a bad thing. It creates such an easy-going feel to it, and makes the viewer feel relieved, that navigating this web page won’t be a hassle to them.

• Who is the primary audience of the advertisement or website?

I would say the primary audience of this advertisement would be anyone really, that would understand the subjects that this person discusses on their blog. Or it could also pertain to those who are really into blogging, or looking to create their own blog for personal reasons or for a business.
