The Future Is Here, Better Get Cooking!

T

his past January Colorado’s Best Kitchens attended the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas (the largest trade show of its kind), and the new major trend is automatic cooking features integrated into the computer brains of these latest wall ovens and ranges. The future is here! Turn your oven on from your phone before you get home. As you walk through the door, your oven is hot and ready to assist with your latest, ambitious culinary journey. Or if your best-laid plans have gone awry, just pop that take and bake pizza into that pre-heated oven to satisfy the family. From the same phone or other device, or by simply doing it the old fashion way and selecting your food from the menu touch screen on the oven, these new automatic cooking technologies use a combination of convection baking, microwave technology, the broiler, and even steam to beat the clock and provide a traditional flavor and presentation. Features like the integrated probe will monitor and cook everything from steak to fish, to the holiday turkey. Hungry for more technology? Some products team those features with other cooking methods like sous vide, and even cameras inside the oven so you can see how your food is coming along. How about having the entire meal cooking worry-free without having to lift a finger? Sounds good to me! But can these auto features outthink a professional chef? I’ve been cooking for almost 30 years so I thought, who better to take on that challenge? I lined up a few common dinner items that I enjoy at home and cooked them back to back, putting my experience up against the computer brain of the culinary robot. And frankly, I was pleasantly surprised! I love the speed of Monogram’s Advantium for baked potatoes, Dacor’s air fryer for chicken wings, Thermador’s extra low Star Burner for my green chili. The JennAir Culinary Center cooked my sweet potato hash in 11 minutes and I didn’t even have to pre-heat the oven. What about a delicate fillet of fish or a single chicken breast? Well, the computer gets the job done but can’t beat a pro-chef

This barbacoa tastes incredible served on warm corn tortillas and topped with sliced avocados. For an added kick I used some of the reserved spicy Chile Colorado Sauce to drizzle over the meat. Some other tasty toppings include chopped onions, chopped cilantro, a squirt of tangy lime juice, and for an added crunch some jicama slices.

or passionate home cook for quality, timing and control. Where the automatic cooking features really shine though are large roasts like prime rib, turkey, and on other foods with the longer cooking times like braised lamb barbacoa (which I feature here). Even pro-chefs enjoy having extra time in the kitchen — it comes in handy cooking while running errands. Take a trip to the market or catch your kid’s ball game, and relax because your food is cooking and waiting for you when you get home. And as for myself, even after years of cooking experience, sometimes I too enjoy a frozen pizza for dinner. –Celebrity Chef Mark Kalix

INGREDIENTS Chile Colorado Sauce: 1 Spanish onion, quartered 3 tomatillos, husked and washed 2 tomatoes, quartered 3 garlic cloves, peeled 4 New Mexico chiles, stemmed 4 ancho chiles, stemmed 1 ½ cups water, divided salt to taste Lamb: 2 ½ pounds de-boned lamb leg 2 tablespoons agave nectar Toppings for Tacos: 16 to 24 corn tortillas Sliced jicama Avocados from Mexico, cubed Chile Colorado Sauce Chopped fresh cilantro Lime wedges

INSTRUCTIONS Chile Colorado Sauce: • Preheat the broiler. • Put the onions, tomatillos, tomatoes, and garlic on a baking sheet. Put the baking sheet under the broiler and cook without turning until vegetables start to get charred about 7 minutes. Remove, set aside, and let cool to room temperature. • In a large dry skillet over medium-low heat, toast the chile peppers, turning them over, for about 1 minute. Transfer them to a saucepan with enough water to cover chiles and boil for about 15 minutes until they are soft. Drain the chiles and discard water. • Combine the vegetables and chiles in a blender with ¾ cup of water per blender (you’ll have to work in two batches) and puree until the mixture is smooth. Season with salt. Leftover sauce can be stored in refrigerator for up to a week. Lamb: • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. • Line a roasting pan with foil. • Rub agave nectar on the meat and generously season the lamb with salt. Pour 2 cups of Chile Colorado Sauce over the meat and rub it on all sides. Put the meat (fat side up) in the roasting pan. Roasting the meat fat side up allows the fat to drip down over the roast as it melts, thereby keeping the exterior nice and moist. • Seal the pan with two layers of foil creating a tight seal, and cook in the oven for 3 hours until meat is very tender. • Take the pan from the oven and let the meat rest for about 30 minutes. • When it’s cool enough to handle, coarsely shred the meat with your fingers or forks, discarding any fat. • Set out all the toppings in separate bowls and serve with the shredded meat. Warm up leftover sauce for a salsa topping and let everyone prepare their own tacos.

HEATHER ATTARDO: White cabinets just adapt to new colors easier than darker colors. White cabinets are timeless in the sense they blend with a variety of appliance styles and colors.

What is it about Shaker-style cabinets that are so timeless?

In this issue of Colorado’s Best Kitchens, our team of designers discusses tips and tricks for ensuring your kitchen remodel doesn’t need a re-remodel in five years. Because after all, just because it’s trendy, doesn’t mean it’s timeless. In general, what keeps kitchens in style?

you can add it in accessories. This is a budget friendly option and can easily be changed out when the trend is out. KARA HAYES: Five years can be a fairly quick turnaround for a trend. Looks tend to evolve from fashion, yet have longer KARA HAYES: I like to encourage clients to create a functional space first for how they use their kitchen, then look staying power in the home than on the runway. Simple clean at accent items to incorporate their favorite trend. lines always stand the test of time. Choose simple clean HEATHER ATTARDO: Exactly. Use a color, material, lines on items that take up the largest parts of the budget, or pattern that can easily adapt to different styles and like cabinetry and appliances. These elements also serve as become ageless. a clean canvas to add embellishments that are trendier like paint, light fixtures, cabinet hardware and tile. We’re getting lots of questions about gray JEANE DOLE: Yes I agree, stay with the classics for the big cabinets and what’s “safe”. ticket items like the cabinets. Lighting fixtures, tile, and the JEANE DOLE: Gray tones are still being used, especially wall color are less expensive items to update. in some parts of the country like Colorado, but the trend is ANDREA MULKEY: My advice is to also incorporate starting to fade — no pun intended! natural elements into the space. For example, wood grain and KARA HAYES: I actually think gray is a nice neutral for natural stone. many design aesthetics. Beyond paint, gray stains on different wood species can read more red or green or stay true gray. How can we fit in current trends? TRISH BONNEY: Trends are tricky. Some come and go so I believe gray’s staying power in cabinetry is anchored in its array of color variations. quickly they can be out before you know it while others hang ANDREA MULKEY: The “White Cabinets” joke in the on for way too long. Consider adding a new trend without design world is, “if white is out, wait a week, it will come right getting “too trendy” in doses. For example, honey gold was back.” More to the point is that white is a great way to update one of the color trends in 2019 and instead of painting an entire room in this color or upholstering a piece of furniture, a space while still staying true to that timeless look.

ANDREA MULKEY: It’s the simplicity of the design that offers people a clean, streamlined look. Most people can appreciate the simplicity of a modern design but are looking for a more transitional look. Shaker provides that compromise! JEANE DOLE: Andrea’s right. Shaker-style cabinets have limited details that keep them from looking dated. HEATHER ATTARDO: However, I’ve found that modern and simplistic decor doesn’t seem to work well with Shakerstyle cabinets.

Let’s talk plate racks, recessed nooks, and glass front cabinets.

Getting the flooring right seems paramount – do we agree on earthy, natural tones? ANDREA MULKEY: Yes, flooring is monumental in a space. It can really control a design. To go back to how to generally keep your kitchen in style, flooring is where you incorporate those natural elements on a larger scale. KARA HAYES: When I think of earthy, I think of muddy or clay/terracotta colors. These can be dated and tend to go in and out of style. Natural tones are more timeless. New finishes are now on the market to bring out the true beauty of natural flooring options, and these finishes prevent wood from yellowing over time. TRISH BONNEY: Wood floors have been around forever and the wood-look is extremely popular as well in LVT and tile. Flooring manufacturers are putting so much into increasing the quality and look of their products, so much so that some consumers have to get down and touch the product to confirm if it’s real wood or not.

What countertop options are timeless?

KARA HAYES: These are all elements that add interest to a kitchen space. How they are implemented changes over time, but the function they serve is timeless. Plate racks are now in drawers but remain common on open shelves. Recessed nooks are a great way to add layers of texture or color to a space, for example, using unique interior colors. Glass front cabinets with metal frames are common in contemporary design, or antiqued mirrors with wood frames exemplify rustic/farmhouse designs. TRISH BONNEY: Interesting organization and storage options are gaining popularity daily. I was extremely inspired at KBIS (Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) with some new, innovative ways to hide things and take advantage of all the nooks and crannies! I feel we’re taking a step back from glass front cabinets because of the need to hide and get things off the counters. ANDREA MULKEY: If the plate rack, nooks, and glass fronts fulfill a need for you, then by all means consider them. But often we find valuable space is taken up by unusable and expensive features. The name of the game now is less flashy features and more real function.

HEATHER ATTARDO: Muted colors with few to medium variations. Stones, concrete, wood are all great as long as they have the right color variations. Too much or too little variation in texture or color tends to date the surfaces. JEANE DOLE: And you can’t beat a Carrera marble-look. Consider this because there are nice quartz options that look like marble but wear better.

Subway tile has been a trend for about 100 years. Do you see it going out of style anytime soon? HEATHER ATTARDO: Never! There’s always a way to mix the subway pattern with other textures and colors. JEANE DOLE: I agree! Subway tiles will always be around but the sizes and textures vary over time. TRISH BONNEY: The 3x6 rectangle is not as trendy anymore. We are attempting to get away from the typical subway by taking that general shape and playing with the scale or adding a point on the end to make a “picket fence” look or doing a beveled edge. But when it comes down to it, the simplicity and simple shape will probably never go out of style.

howcasing a full suite of cutting-edge GE Monogram appliances, this open-concept kitchen in Arvada transformed from a somewhat clunky floor plan to a kitchen-family room with logical, convenient flow. Homeowners Jeff and Suzette Morgan wanted to keep the original footprint of their kitchen intact, but make it more open for entertaining with family and friends. “Although this part of the home theoretically already had an open concept,” explains cabinet designer Mike McCort of All About Cabinets and Countertops, “it was broken up into three separate areas — the kitchen, an office/ desk space, and family room. Our focus was to blend everything into one open entertainment area.” This was accomplished by transforming the desk area into a buffet space with a built-in double oven and more cabinet storage, cutting down half the island to counter-height, and adding hardwood flooring in the kitchen to match the rest of the first floor. “Mike was able to listen to our needs and requirements, work around some of the odd angles present in our kitchen, and provide us with a beautiful and user-friendly space,” says Suzette. “We kept our existing taupe walls and dark oak kitchen table, and selected granite countertops to unite all of the neutral tones. With white cabinets in the heart of the room and a warm gray cabinet for the island, buffet and wet bar, we chose brushed nickel hardware throughout. Glass door accents were done in a seeded glass. The Kichler lighting fixtures are a mix of stainless accents and oil rubbed bronze, a color that’s accented by the deep bronze tone in the granite, and feature the same seeded glass done in the cabinet doors.”

The backsplash in the kitchen area is a glazed porcelain subway tile in grey and pewter from Arizona Tile, while the wet bar features Cascading Waters glass tile from Daltile. To enhance cohesiveness and flow, the existing ceramic floor tile was removed and replaced with red oak, the same that surrounds it, and finished all in a classic gray stain.

UPGRADING THE APPLIANCES

At the top of Suzette’s wish-list was a double oven, and the Monogram 30-inch Professional model has not disappointed. Inspired by commercial kitchens, the upper unit has an upscale French door design with a precision engineered chain-drive mechanism that allows for one-hand opening of both doors at the

same time. The European Convection feature channels heated air from the top of the oven and circulates it around food on all sides for perfectly uniform baking and roasting. And the rest of the Monogram appliances are equally as impressive. The 36-inch Professional gas rangetop features smoothly finished edges and large electronic control knobs. There are two powerful burners on either side of a stainless steel and aluminum-clad griddle, which offers fast and consistent heating across the entire cooking surface. The built-in, 48-inch Professional sideby-side refrigerator boasts an advanced temperature management system and a climate-control drawer that can express-chill beverages, express-thaw meats, and set to specific temperatures for perishable foods. WiFi Connect lets the family wirelessly control functions from their smart devices. Rounding out this kitchen’s suite of stainless steel Monogram appliances are a fully integrated smart dishwasher with advanced wash system, a 24-inch beverage center, and a

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

This project was the culmination of a long process, as the Morgans did a great deal of research and interviewed a number of firms before they even began their remodel. “We’ve been planning the redesign basically since we moved into this home over seven years ago,” Suzette says. “We didn’t try to fit within a certain style, but designed our kitchen based on what we find functional and beautiful.” As mentioned before, they were very happy with the work done by Mike and his crew from All About Cabinets and Countertops, and also felt their selection of general contractor Rob Gabriel and High Country Home Improvements was the right choice. “His team of construction pros was detail-oriented and did immaculate work,” according to Suzette. She and the whole family are ecstatic about the end result. “I have definitely been cooking more in this new, gorgeous kitchen, and we’ve been entertaining more, too. Good friends have helped us break in the new space, sharing a glass of wine, cup of coffee or meal, and have been amazed at how much more open and bright the space is now. We waited years to initiate this project and sure wish we would’ve embarked on the process sooner! This new, updated kitchen is exactly what our house needed.”

hen David Beller and Nick Apel embarked on a remodel of their circa 1912 house in Denver’s Country Club neighborhood, they were determined to bring a fresh energy to the design while still honoring the property’s historical essence. “We wanted something that was highly styled,” says David, “but still true to the overall age and aesthetic of the home. Character was important to us, as was a feeling of whimsy and sophistication.” “We wanted something that was highly styled,” says David, “but still true to the overall age and aesthetic of the home. The under-cabinet wine reserve with a custom panel door blends the appliance in with the rest of the cabinetry.

Designer Allie Smith-Wise of C&C Kitchens was totally on board with this philosophy. “The design was truly a collaboration between myself and the homeowners,” she says. “Which I feel was just perfect. They’re the ones who use the space and it’s important to me that it fits and functions for their lifestyle. We tried to blend classic and contemporary, and between the classic cabinet style and the dark moody veins of the quartzite countertops, I feel like that was achieved.” The kitchen area is a combination of the original part of the house and an addition that was done in the late eighties. Before the renovation, the cooking area was packed into the addition, while the other half contained a six-person dining area. “We love cooking and didn’t need half of our kitchen’s square footage underutilized with more seating than our family has people,” David laughs. “By adding a window to the addition and spreading out the cooking/ storage area, we made our entire kitchen usable.” “Because this home is in a historic neighborhood,” Allie says, “adding the new window involved getting our plans reviewed by the Landmark Preservation Board. After receiving the okay to move forward, we had a

Now we’re cooking

For the all-important appliances, the homeowners originally chose a different top-ofthe-line brand name, but after doing research on customer satisfaction and, most importantly, reliability, they ultimately preferred the look and quality of the Thermador line. The refrigerator, bursting with LED light, is a built-in 36-inch model with French doors, and like the dishwasher, is enabled with Home Connect for personalized control, helpful notifications and remote diagnostics. double ovens. This new 2020 model features the perfect blend of professional-grade cooking along with a color TFT interface and Internet connectivity for remote control and monitoring, crowned above by a powerful Thermador hood. “We faced a challenge when venting the new hood properly,” says Allie. “The 48-inch range required a commercial sized hood for venting, but because it was placed by a 10-inch brick wall, we were unable to put the vent pipe in the wall or ceiling. So we had to customize each cabinet and hide the pipe to make it to the outside.” Capitalizing on the smaller island space and tucked away, a 24-inch MicroDrawer® microwave is built-in to the narrow end of the island and flush with the storage drawer below. Finally, a beautiful under-counter wine reserve with matching hardware and custom panel over a glass front completes the look.

The proof of the pudding

When asked how he and Nick feel about the finished product, David replies, “It’s better than we expected. We knew we loved the individual pieces, but we couldn’t see the larger picture. Allie kept telling us to trust her — and we’re thrilled we did.” “We love hosting guests and utilizing our home to raise money for nonprofits. The kitchen has not disappointed. And now, months after completion, we’re still in awe every day when we walk in. The best part is sitting at the island when

it’s just the two of us, looking around, and being in total appreciation of how the space turned out. We hope that feeling never goes away.”

Platte Park Charmer BY GEORGE MCCLURE

Located near the Old South Pearl Street shopping district in the desirable Platte Park neighborhood, just south of Washington Park, this bungalow had great street appeal when Larry and Mary Kay Mueller snapped it up a couple of years ago. The inside was terribly outdated though, so they knew a major renovation was in their future. “We loved the area,” says Mary Kay, “as the the ability to walk to restaurants and run/ exercise in nearby parks and open areas is really delightful. Saving and renovating a classic home like this, both for its improved livability and salability seemed like a win-win!”

Back to the Future

Having previously worked with designer Gavi Fiedler and the crew at Kitchens by Wedgewood, the Muellers called upon them once again for this project. Much of the inspiration came from the classic early 20th century style from which so much of great American design is drawn. “The bungalow dates back to 1908,” says Gavi, “with charming details found in houses of that era. We set out to make the kitchen the centerpiece of the home, and an updated, modern and upscale revision of a period kitchen seemed perfect.” The space is small, so creating a functional layout and maximizing storage were the two biggest challenges. “We approached this by adding a wall of shallow cabinets with lots of storage space,” Gavi continues. “The general contractor, Flenard Construction, removed one wall and installed the cabinets, and they did a great job. Vickey and Tim Rempel have an undeniable passion for design, and it shows in their effortlessly elegant kitchen.

T

he couple owns the design-build flooring, cabinet and remodel company, Expressions in Flooring in Aurora. And this particular kitchen, which was part of a larger remodel and might have been a daunting task for another family, was no match for the Rempels’ enthusiasm — the pair jumped right in and remodeled in four months! “This home was purchased and built by Shea Homes. We closed on a Friday at noon and had the house gutted by 5 p.m. Saturday,” Tim says. “We wanted to do our own thing in style and design.”

Elegant and Functional

The Rempels’ contemporary design begins at the centering quartzite island. Its grand size, spectacular marble-like finish and positioning designate a cohesive heart of the kitchen ecosystem. “For the island we chose quartzite with the look of marble but without the maintenance,” he says. “It also has the 6cm eased edge detail which gives the entire kitchen a presence of casual elegance.” The perimeter countertops compliment the island with a wink, made of solid graphite-grey quartz. Entertainment was a major factor in this kitchen’s design, so they made sure there was extra room between the counters and island. A unique corner coffee space with a raised countertop shows the extent of the Rempels’ attention to detail. The appliances were all carefully selected JennAir brand, chosen because they fit well with the overall design concept. The sleek silvery lines of the appliances help move the eye gracefully throughout the kitchen, and add some fun modern elements, like a luxe under-counter multi-tier wine cellar and pull out outlet cylinder. A 36-inch wide, stainless steel six burner cooktop is designed to sit flush with the countertops along the main wall below a modern, low profile hood to match. The JennAir French door, counter-depth refrigerator is also flush with the cabinetry and paired with a double wall oven with A 36-inch wide, stainless steel six burner cooktop is designed to sit flush with the countertops along the main wall below a modern, low profile hood to match.

matching handles to balance the kitchen. The double oven also includes JennAir’s renowned tablet-like Culinary Center, essentially a built-in cookbook display menu that works intuitively with the oven’s probe, and convection bake and roast modes. The precision of the Culinary Center even considers the cookware in use for that perfect dish. The JennAir built-in microwave operates like a drawer and opens just below counter-height for ease of use by all members of the family, with an additional warming drawer beneath for keeping breads, pies and other dishes ready until serving time.

It’s all in the Details

The ample cabinetry ensures storage room for all kinds of cookware, cooking components and supplies, while the light color evokes brightness and levity. “We used drawers and furniture base in painted maple, all soft close doors and drawers to give it a real furniture feel,” Tim says. “For door and drawer hardware, we use many different sizes to

match the size of the cabinets.” The result is a smattering of sizes, which keeps the elegance fresh. The wall tile is a funky hexagonal pattern, courtesy of the Big Apple. “This was a great find out of New York, it’s a unique porcelain pattern that is bold yet understated,” he says. The tile features a mix of soothing organic and structural geometric patterns that enliven the walls. The lighting brings the design full circle. “All lighting is LED 3000k that gives just the right color contrast to the surrounding areas.” Pendant lights dripping from the ceiling add a swank, yet quirky addition to the lighting scheme, while sunlight seeps through plantation shutters. “We chose plantation shutters to top off the overall look and we feel it came out perfect.”

Thoughtfully designed details elevate this kitchen to mastery, the kind that are distinctly from a duo with a passion for the craft. “This is our dream home,” Tim says. The house itself sits on the northern edge of the Black Forest at Sampson’s Gulch, where magnificent treetop views abound. It’s truly a dream kitchen for a dream home.

“I was familiar with the quality and reliability of KitchenAid products and knew they were built to last,” she (Clissy) says.

“My old kitchen was quite dated and I wanted a beautiful space I’d love to be in,” says Golden homeowner, Clissy Anderson. “I plan on living here for years to come, and updating my kitchen not only provided me a beautiful space, it made it more functional.” Working closely with her to help visualize her perfect kitchen was designer Delilah Collins, of TVL Creative, who explains, “We created a beautiful space that is definitely more functional and selected finishes and cabinetry which reflect Clissy’s sass and sophistication.”

First Things First

Clissy picked out her appliances relatively early in the process. “I was familiar with the quality and reliability of KitchenAid products and knew they were built to last,” she says. “I really fell in love with the fridge — the wine rack inside was really cool and it’s easy to organize everything in there — so I chose the matching stove, dishwasher and range hood.” The sleek design of the 20-cubic-foot side-by-side refrigerator features KitchenAid’s Preserva® Food Care System. Its two independent cooling systems help keep food fresh while the FreshFlow™ Air Filter minimizes odors, and the Produce Preserver delays over-ripening. With its counter-depth size, it gives the high-end look of a built-in, while the professionally inspired design features satin textured handles with beautiful red inserts. Having grown up with gas ranges, Clissy knew they worked better and faster than electric models, so she was especially excited for this upgrade. The beautiful unit she

“Since function is the number one priority in a kitchen remodel,” says Delilah, “I learned how Clissy utilized her existing kitchen in order to provide solutions to make the space work better.”

chose is a 30-inch, 5-burner model that produces flawless cooking results thanks to Even-Heat™ True Convection — the unique bow-tie design and convection fan ensure the inside of the entire oven is heated to the perfect temperature and stays there. There’s also a Steam Rack that offers the ability to add additional moisture to the inside of the oven for enhanced cooking results. The high-performance dishwasher features a fanenabled ProDry™ System, third-level rack and bottle wash system with flexible nozzles that can be inserted in deep glassware to ensure a spotless wash. Installation of the 30-inch wall-mount, 3-speed canopy hood was a bit of a challenge as it’s located near the middle of the house, but the contractor (Mike Collins with 5280 Renovations) eventually figured out how to vent it to the outside.

Form Follows Function

“Since function is the number one priority in a kitchen remodel,” says Delilah, “I learned how Clissy utilized her existing kitchen in order to provide solutions to make the space work better. For example, the island faced the other way before — it was getting in the way and didn’t work with the kitchen table. And there was a desk area in the kitchen, which was just wasted space as she never used it. We took that out and added more cabinets and shelves, and now there’s tons of storage. She was very clear on her unique style, so once we had the new flow figured out, providing material and finish options was a breeze!” Clissy describes the finished project as a luxury mountain home with a touch of city class. She loves the richness of the dark wood contrasted with the lightness of the Brittanicca quartz countertops from Cambria, which were purchased from and installed by Touchstone Granite. “Once I saw the Brittanicca, I was hooked!” she says. “There was no other countertop I’d be happy with. It has so much movement I had to have it.” Penny tiles over the stove make the exhaust hood the focal point, and the natural colors of the stacked stone backsplash tie everything together. A gray island pulls that color out of the countertops, and the theme continues with the light gray walls and a gray accent in the attached family room. Gray furniture finishes the look. “I wanted to keep my existing kitchen table as it has a sentimental meaning to me,” Clissy continues, “and I love the lines. The lights are a combo of 20th century lights from Restoration Hardware and a chrome dome fixture over my table. We added LED lights over the island and sink for task lighting.”

“I have zero regrets about my kitchen,” Clissy gushes. “I’d do it all over again. The timeline I got from my contractor was really accurate, my salesperson at Appliance Factory Fine Lines was great and my designer helped me get better pricing on many items. I also updated the entry-way light and all of the lights in my hallway, laundry room, and the loft hallway area upstairs.” The project turned out so well that Delilah and the countertop manufacturer Cambria actually threw a kitchen “reveal” party. “It was so much fun,” Clissy says. “There were two high school classmates in my home who hadn’t seen each other for 39 years! I had a great mix of friends, neighbors, former co-workers and family. It was a perfect way to break in my kitchen.”

And, according to Clissy, that festive feeling has not gone away. “I simply love it. I smile every time I walk into my home! Last November I hosted 13 for a family Thanksgiving dinner and cooked a full turkey meal. We had plenty of prep and serving space. I have had family in several times and my kitchen just works. I love it for simple breakfasts with my guy, big family meals and just everyday meal prep. I’m planning to host four other couples soon and can’t wait for them to see my beautiful kitchen and home. I want to entertain more for sure!” Appliances by

Lighten Up! By George McClure

Subhead type of intro line here?

We wanted a more practical and contemporary kitchen, along with some changes to the layout and opening up of the space. We went with a modern farmhouse design to incorporate both classic and contemporary styles.

NESTLED NEXT TO A MAJESTIC GREENBELT, this Ken-Caryl Ranch home has always had a great location and good bones, but was ripe for a renovation when Greg and Keri Galvan bought it in 2018.

“Our house was built in 1988, with the last kitchen renovation taking place in the mid-90s,” says Greg. “We wanted a more practical and contemporary kitchen, along with some changes to the layout and opening up of the space. We went with a modern farmhouse design to incorporate both classic and contemporary styles.” The couple made Steve Nelson and First Choice Restoration their first choice as the general contractor, having worked with the firm on a previous project. “Steve was great,” Greg says. “He helped walk us through what was practical and how it could potentially impact the cost of the project. He also referred us to local businesses where we could pick out our cabinets, countertops, appliances, etc., with competitive prices and contractor discounts.” According to Steve, “It was really a collaboration. I met with Greg and Keri to get their perspective and ideas, drew up a couple of things and sent them over, and then we worked things out from there. They made the final decision on colors, which included oak hardwood floors, outer cabinets in a soft white, island cabinets in an accented soft blue, the granite countertops, and white brick lay tile for the backsplash.”

A Room with a View

As part of the remodel, the wall between the dining room and old breakfast nook was removed, which improved the flow between the two spaces and increased natural lighting, and the island was enlarged to seat up to six people with great views out of the north-facing windows. Due to the number of windows and the view of the open space and hogback from the kitchen, Greg and Keri chose not to install pendant lights above the island, opting instead for recessed, dimmable LED lights throughout the kitchen, and two black pendant lights over the dining room table. Under-cabinet lighting was also installed in both the kitchen and dining room. Additionally, they added cabinets and a serving counter in the dining room to increase storage and counter space, and to carry the look and feel of the kitchen into that area.

Back in Black

“We chose Samsung appliances in the black stainless steel finish that does not show finger prints and swirl marks as easily as standard stainless steel,” says Greg. “The darker color helps contrast some of the lighter colors in the room, plus the new appliances give us additional food storage and preparation capacity.” All these models also incorporate Bluetooth and WiFi for the ultimate in modern convenience. Featuring elegant French doors, the magnificent counterdepth refrigerator (this one a four-door model with a sleek, handle-less design) offers a FlexZone™ drawer with a Smart Divider that sections off food to cool at different temperatures for more flexible storage. The built-in Autofill Pitcher automatically refills, providing cold water anytime the family needs it and the option to infuse their favorite refreshing flavor. Adjustable shelves go from standard to slide-in or flip-up to store bottles and other tall items with ease. At the Galvans’s request, the kitchen now has two ovens — a microwave-wall oven combination unit in an upper wall cabinet, and a second single oven in a lower base cabinet. Each is a 30-inch model with an easy-fill tray and a steam cook feature which lets the homeowners bake, broil, and roast with precise moisture, while two powerful convection fans circulate heat for even cooking. Boasting a dual power burner with a wide range of power from a high heat to a low simmer, the 5-burner gas cooktop offers powerful and precise cooking. Modern analog knobs are encircled by blue LED lights that indicate if the cooktop is on, and an included cast iron griddle lets the family cook their favorite breakfast foods across two burners at once. The cooktop is synced via Bluetooth to the matching hood, so the vent exhausts automatically to keep the kitchen smoke-free.

We all know that parties end up in the kitchen, and now we have plenty of space for that!

The Results

“We were stunned at how well everything turned out,” says Greg. “We were expecting a significant improvement when we started the project but had no idea how great it would end up being. When dealing with a house that was built in the ’80s, there will always be architectural and structural limitations you need to work around. There was some HVAC, electrical, and plumbing that needed to be rerouted, along with the entry to our laundry room. Considering what we had to work with, we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. “We had a small party on New Year’s Eve with friends and neighbors. Most of them had seen our old kitchen and were

blown away by the transformation. Everyone we have had over since the completion of our kitchen remodel has been thoroughly impressed. We will definitely be cooking and entertaining more at home. The new layout is much more conducive for meal preparation, and there is plenty of room now to entertain. We all know that parties end up in the kitchen, and now we have plenty of space for that!”

First Choice Restoration Locally owned and operated, at First Choice Restoration we take great pride in the quality and reliability of our construction services. CBK: This is a bizarre market. Affordability is becoming an issue. Potential buyers are frustrated by the process and limited inventory. JENNIFER: And that’s why staging is so important. Potential buyers need to be able to view themselves in their future space. Showcasing real estate at its maximum square footage and in its best light creates a higher potential, not only for a quicker sale, but for top dollar in the current market. CBK: What’s one of the most important areas of the house to stage? JENNIFER: First impressions can make or break a sale. So in my opinion it’s the entry or foyer. With the living room, kitchen and master bedroom to follow in priority order. CBK: Nice. Give us some tips to staging the entryway! JENNIFER: Be as spacious and open as possible. In other words, clutterfree. Use decor that showcases features of the house itself, while keeping functionality in mind. If there isn’t an alternate area, such as a mudroom, then consider items such as decorative hooks for coats, wicker baskets for a collection of seasonal items, and maybe a neutral rug. Function is key! Side note: keep your personal belongings during showings out of sight. CBK: It’s interesting how some just have the eye for this and others don’t. I fall into the “don’t” category. JENNIFER: (Laughing) Oh my God — I was 10 years old and I had this standard matching wood laminate furniture set. A bed, desk, dresser, and armoire in a very small bedroom. I rearranged my room too many times to

count, determined to figure out how to gain more square footage so my friends and I could play board games on the floor! I remember my excitement when I figured out the best space plan was by sliding that huge monster of an armoire into the closet and voilà. I had gained an additional six square feet in my room! Bonus... I had created a custom closet too. CBK: I guess some people just figure it out. JENNIFER: I’m a problem solver by nature. I love a challenge in finding solutions that create better function and purpose. While tapping into my creative side, I bring beauty and style to suit any interior space! CBK: Let’s talk money. What’s the return on investing in staging? JENNIFER: Great question! There are a lot of statistics and data that continue to confirm staging is a win-win. Recent Forbes and Denver Post articles mentioned The National Association of Realtors who estimates that for every $100 spent on staging a home, a seller can potentially recoup $400. CBK: Really? So what’s the range someone can expect to spend on staging? JENNIFER: About $300-$3,000. It may be as simple as a consultation that includes a little “Staging 101”, followed by recommendations in priority order. From there it depends on what kind of hands-on help the client needs to get the home stage-ready — from organizational assistance to furniture rental. I offer flat rate staging packages for easy transparency!

CBK: What should a first-time stager client know before contacting you? JENNIFER: Have your notepad and pen ready! My first priority is to educate homeowners and realtors on staging basics while addressing potential issues that could hold back a potential buyer. CBK: How long does this process generally take? JENNIFER: Anywhere from 2-4 weeks. I always recommend the sooner I see the property the better! That way we can address any maintenance repairs and unfinished projects. If furniture rental is appropriate, we can get a jump on setting up delivery and install that fits everyone’s schedules. CBK: Even though there’s so much at stake, there are still skeptics out there. What should we leave them with? JENNIFER: Where a client has a lot of pride and joy in purchases or updates they’ve made over the years, I’m able to assess a property without personal strings attached to create better selling points within different spaces of the home. At the end of the day, if you want top dollar and a quick sale, what do you have to lose? CBK: Exactly. JL Interiors Design LLC. JL Interior Design is an A-Z Interior Design Company providing a multitude of interior services for homeowners, general contractors, and realtors in the Denver Metro area. 303-870-4885 jenn@jlinteriordesign.net https://jlinteriordesign.net/
