Book Review - The Bellweather Revivals by Benjamin Wood
Eden Bellwether is a brilliant, posh and decidedly strange young Cambridge student. He has been cosseted and indulged by parents who, like his sister Iris, can’t quite decide if he’s a genius or something a little weirder. So far as Eden himself is concerned there’s no question. His academic brilliance is obvious. But he also believes he can heal people, using the power of music. This isn’t using music to get you in the right mood for a party, or listening to a bit of baroque to influence the brain waves before an exam, Eden believes he can mend limbs, cure cancer and....well if it sounds interesting, you need to read The Bellwether Revivals by Benjamin Wood to find out what else.
We’re told the story by Oscar, a real outsider, who falls in love with Eden’s sister and becomes increasingly disturbed by the strangely unhealthy sibling relationship. As events spiral out of control the tale turns into a pretty gripping read. This is a first novel and one which has faint echoes of other stories you might have read – the unsettling undergraduate clique of Donna Tartt’s Secret History, elements of Brideshead Revisited. But at heart it’s a gothic suspense story which takes the idea of a possible fine line between genius and insanity and runs with it. Maybe just the thing for a dark winter night...

12 This month we bring you a walk I’ve planned for quite a while and I’m really glad I eventually got around to it. Ogston reservoir is beautiful and this walk will give you the opportunity to see a number of nice views. There are a number of opportunities to let your dog run off the lead but there are a few stretches of road so take care and use pavements when possible. 4 1/2 mile circular walk around Ogston Reservoir A moderate and very scenice walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 – 2 1/2 hours. There are some hilly sections and the terrain is varied with some uneven and muddy parts so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended at this time of the year.
1. Begin in the “Fishermans Car Park” off Ogston New Road. Exit the car park onto the road taking care as the pavement on the other side only runs a short way. Turn right and Continue to the end of the road and turn left onto Butterfield Lane. 2. Opposite the church take a signpost on your right for Wessington. Cross the field and pass through a hedge. Cross this field, turn left at a way post through a gap in a hedge then cross another field, pass through another gap and proceed to a stile and onto the road. 3. Cross the road and directly opposite, take the stile by a gate onto a footpath. Continue along this path with hedges on either side. At the end of the hedges continue ahead to cross a field. Pass through a hedge and cross another field heading for a footbridge across the stream. 4. Take the left hand path after crossing the stream and follow the path alongside the der a e R ffer stream on your left until you reach a O bridge. Take the steps onto Ogston Lane and continue before taking a right hand turn onto Crow Lane. 5. Carry on along the road past the houses until it brings you to a fork. Turn left here along Hurst Lane. At the road, cross straight over and take a footpath straight ahead. At the end of the path turn left onto Beresford Lane. Very soon on your left take a stile over a wall on your left. 8. Cross the field, keeping the hedge on your left and at the end of the field turn left onto Badger Lane. Walk down this road as it heads towards the reservoir. At the bottom turn right onto the B6014, using the footpath, crossing the reservoir. 9. Take the next left onto Quarry Lane. Continue along the road before taking a signposted path on your right, just after a house with a ‘Methodist Church’ sign. Follow the path alongside the hedge and then uphill and across the field, heading for the top corner. Turn left onto a path and follow to a farm road. 10. Turn right and continue ahead, taking a footpath on your left just before reaching a building. Pass through a stile by a gate and follow the path down the side of the field, towards the reservoir. 11. At the road turn right onto Ogston New Road. Make use of the pavement on the opposite side and follow the road as it takes you back to the car park. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Keep the Christmas Season Crime Free with Derbyshire Police Although it is a busy time of year, there are a few steps people should remember to help ensure they stay safe and secure: Light up at home
If you can, use a timer switch to ensure a light comes on when you aren’t at home. Most glaries happen when a property is empty- leaving a light on can deter burglars.

Make sure you use a secure online payment service and use credit cards rather than debit cards. Don’t give out your personal or financial information online unless you know your contact is legitimate and mark off your online transactions against your bank statement.
Keep yourself safe:
Avoid using expensive mobile phones and other equipment in the street and if you are going out in the evening, make sure you have your keys, money, phone and plans to get home. Make sure someone knows what time you will be back.
Keep your car safe:
Make sure you park in a well lit car park and lock your car. Never leave any valuables in your car, such as mobiles or satellite navigation systems.
Don’t drink and drive:
Drink or drug driving can be fatal. If you are going out for the evening, stick to soft drinks if you are driving. Nominate a designated driver who can get you all home safely.
Know your alcohol limits:
We want people to go out in the Amber Valley and have a safe and enjoyable evening out. Antisocial behaviour, particularly related to alcohol, is one of our top priorities and we will be taking action against those who commit it. Know your limits.

Gardeners Calendar - Nov/Dec
Time to give roses a bit of care before the weather sets in properly. Cut off most of the year’s growth and take out large woody stems. This will prevent wind rock which damages roots. If your roses have suffered from blackspot, remove affected stems, but also make sure you remove damaged fallen leaves from around the bush to prevent spread of the disease. Specimen or special plants grown in pots this year may be at least partly protected if you move them to a sheltered corner away from too much wind and frost. External house walls can create a warmer micro climate –especially if your garden faces south. Wrap terracotta pots in bubble wrap to avoid them cracking – you see you know there was a reason why you kept it!
It may seem like hard work but if you get a nice day it’s worth working some organic matter into the soil before the real frosts start. It helps the worms do their work. Top Tip
Gather and stack bits of wood and logs to create a winter home for hedgehogs, amphibians and insects.
