Gardeners Calendar - December

Prune apple and pear trees and cut down the canes of autumn fruiting raspberries Stake any young trees to prevent wind rock loosening the soil around the roots and damaging them. Dig over any beds you’re going to put new plants in next year so the frost has a chance to break down into the soil.

Top Tip If you’ve $ish in a garden pond, put a plastic ball in so you don’t have to smash ice to prevent a build up of methane from decaying plant life, killing the $ish

Help save train making in the UK

11

Actions to save Bombardier and up 15,000 UK high-tech manufacturing jobs in the UK continue with unrelenting pressure on the Government. Bombardier is the world’s largest train-maker and is currently engaged in a review that could result in its withdrawal from the UK. If it does, the impact on our local economy would be disastrous. The contract has not been awarded to Siemens - they just have ‘preferred bidder’ status. Current situation:• Peaceful protest meetings - local, in London and elsewhere - are set to continue • Pressure groups and lobbying of Members of Parliament continues • Bombardier Community Support Group has been formed and is rapidly increasing its level of inFluence • The legal situation has been referred to the European Commission • A question has been tabled with Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills - “Given the consensus view that Thameslink is a Government contract - is the Secretary of State prepared to stay within the law and stop the current tender process before a contract is signed?” A written response is awaited • Derby City Council have provided funding for a full Judicial Review Please keep your Finger on the pulse and do everything that you can to support jobs in the UK If you want to become pro-actively involved please contact Malcolm Holden - malcolm.holden@sixsigma-ltd.com

Book Review We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

13

We Need to Talk About Kevin, Lionel Shriver’s story of a Fictional high school massacre has sold more than a million copies, won the Orange Prize for Fiction and has just been turned into a Film. It’s easy to see why. This isn’t blood and guts – we don’t Find out the details of the killings until near the end. Thursday as Kevin’s mother Eva describes the event, is mostly a lurking sense of horror which pervades the book. But you always know where this book is heading and it makes the descriptions of Kevin’s growing up even more icily frightening. The story is told as a series of letters from Eva to her husband Franklin about their clever, manipulative and apparently sociopathic son who carries out a Columbine style slaughter at his high school. But this is a book which doesn’t take the easy way out. There are no pat answers to the question why, which everyone asks after this sort of atrocity. Eva is a complex character – almost as complex as her son. She and her husband try to bring their family up as well as they can. They’re human, they’re very different people and they both make mistakes, as all parents do all the time. The difference between Eva and Franklin, is that she, after failing to “bond” with Kevin as a baby, has continual fears about the always explainable behaviour of this seemingly unexceptional child while Franklin, believing the myth of childhood and families is determined to see only good in every circumstance. It’s a book which makes you think hard about the assumptions we make about parenting and human nature. It’s pitiless and disturbing and a very, very good read.
