This month brings us lots of bank holidays and (hopefully!) some more lovely weather. There is so much going on in April, it is hard to decide how to spend your time , but hopefully the things to do pages and the feature on Midlands Railway will provide you with some inspiration. In addition, if you would like to learn something new in the coming months, Alfreton Workers Education Association have released their summer programme and it looks fantastic. If you are interested in history pertaining to the local area and you enjoy learning outdoors, +ind out more on page27. I think that we’ve now also reached the time of year when we can start considering making home improvements and get going with that spring/ summer cleaning. Check out Graham at Oasis Bathrooms on Page 14/15 and B Sole Plumbing on page 11. Of course, an absolute necessity in Spring and Summer is a good, reliable window cleaner, so I’m glad to see that Capewell have returned, who I use myself and cannot recommend highly enough (page 23). Editors Choice I have had a massive problem in my hall way for well over a year now— the dog has no respect for the house and splatters walls with mud from his walk!! So this month it got on my nerves so much that I contacted Tony from jobs to do. I decided that I needed wallpaper (speci ically the type that I can wipe) and having no experience with it, I was out of my depth. Meat of the Month - April is BBQ time! Homemade Beef Burgers
It is that time of year again to clean down the BBQ and soak up those few rays of spring sunshine after such an unforgiving winter. So why not follow this recipe and make your own Burgers‌.failing that, instead of buying minced beef from Owen Taylors, buy them ready made!!
Ingredients Beef Burgers 500g of minced beef 1 egg 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 small diced red onion 1 tbsp. thyme 1 tbsp. parsley 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & pepper - to taste 4 x Ciabatta buns Blue cheese Dressing: 100g sour cream 100g mayonnaise 50g Blue cheese crumbled Garlic powder Mustard powder 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Method
For the blue cheese dressing simply whisk the ingredients except the blue cheese together in a bowl, then stir in the blue cheese. Now cover and chill overnight in the fridge. For the burgers, place the beef, diced onion, egg, herbs, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt & pepper into a bowl and mix together. Using wet hands separate into four equal measures and roll into balls, then latten with the palm of your hand until they are an inch and a half thick. Cover with cling ill and place in the fridge for half an hour. To barbeque the burgers wait until the coals have turned white. Drizzle the burgers with oil and place on the grill until the burgers are browned on each side. This should take about 3-4 minutes for each side for a rare burger. If you want a medium burger cook for a further 2-3 minutes on each side To toast the buns, slice and place in the barbeque until they are browned. The Origins of the Easter Bunny
Have you ever wondered why Easter involves a bunny and brightly coloured chocolate eggs? Well it appears that we may have the Germans to thank for this particular vagary of holiday calendar.
“Osterhase” In 17th Century Germany the tradition of Osterhase involves children building brightly coloured nests out of caps and bonnets, which they would place in hidden parts of their homes and gardens. In this tradition if the children had been good the Osterhase (a bunny) would lay a brightly coloured egg in the child's nest. The tradition spread to the United States after being introduced by German immigrants. As the tradition has developed over the years the Osterhase has become the Easter Bunny, which hides chocolate eggs for children to +ind.

11 Undoubtedly the reason why both rabbits and eggs feature in the Easter celebrations is the early origins in the many pagan fertility festivals which proliferate this time of year. Really it is not surprising that rabbits have become such a symbol of fertility considering they can conceive a second litter whilst still pregnant with the +irst.
So Why The Eggs? One theory for the reason that eggs are involved in this festival is the link to the end of the Christian Festival of Lent, where eggs would be in abundance and they were eaten to celebrate. However, eggs are a pagan symbol of rebirth and it is possible this has been adapted because of the links to the Christian belief in Christ’s resurrection. One story linked to this belief tells of how Mary Magdalene visited the Emperor of Rome after Christ's resurrection and told him that Christ had risen. To which he pointed to an egg and said “Christ has no more risen than that egg has turned red�. At which point the egg turned red.

Book Review - The Whisperer by Donato Carrisi
If you look at book best seller lists, thrillers are always near the top. We love to escape into gripping stories which scare and mystify us. There’s now such a demand that there’s even a huge market for foreign thrillers, starting with Mankell’s Wallander series, and of course the incredible success of Stieg Larsson’s brilliant Millennium trilogy. If you go into a bookshop today, there’s whole shelves of Scandinavian crime novels. To judge by The Whisperer, by Donato Carrisi, the Italians could be next. This book has been a huge bestseller across Europe. It’s pacy, it plays games with you, the plot is labyrinthine, the characters pleasingly strange. For my money, despite the excited blurbs on the back cover, it doesn’t have the writing class or sense of place and genuine nailbitingness of Stieg Larsson’s books, but he was exceptional. The Whisperer is decent crime fiction, nicely creepy and with more twists and turns than a corkscrew. It starts with the gruesome discovery of six arms buried in a circle in a forest clearing. They belong to young girls who have been reported missing. But there are no bodies. So we have a serial killer; but there seems to be a parallel story going on which doesn’t click into place until the very end of the book. In the meantime you have to guess what it’s doing there. The reason for the book’s title also seems mystifying till the end, so I won’t give it away. But you’re a very clever reader if you guess the final revelations

This +ilm tells the true story of the machinists at Ford’s Dagenham plant in the 1960’s, who took on not only the bosses of Ford but also the government, to change the world of work forever and ensure that women were paid the same as men. With an all star British cast, including the Sally Hawkins as the leading lady, Rita O’Grady and support from Geraldine James, Jamie Winstone and Bob Hoskins, I defy anyone to dislike this +ilm! If you are expecting a ‘burn your bras’ rendition of the hardships of women, you will be very disappointed because this gives a very honest account of the times. It is funny and witty and jam packed with characters that either you have seen or can relate to.

Editors Choice Hopi Ear Candle at Serenity Therapy This month I have enjoyed another fantastic treatment from Dawn at Serenity Therapy - Hopi Ear Candle. I suffer from ear and sinus problems and Dawn recommended this therapy may help. I am a very squeamish person when it comes to my ears but as ever Dawn put me at ease instantly. She specially sourced the candles with eucalyptus to help with the sinuses which made me feel very special. The whole treatment takes around 30mins and there was no pain or discomfort. Spring has now sprung and you must be dying to get into the garden so here are a few things to think about. Rake your grass to remove moss and old dead grass. Aerate with a fork and feed with a good quality lawn feed Cut back last years growth on shrubs to enable the new growth to come through. Now is the time to plant summer bulbs and begin to plant seeds in a warm greenhouse or cold frame but make sure you take the time to protect them from any late frosts. Top Tip This is the month when weeds come back into growth, make sure you tackle them early to save work later on.

28 Update on the development of Riddings Park As a regular visitor to Ridings park, having seen how fantastically the park is transforming, I was interested this month in inding out how the development is progressing and how near it is to completion and I thought I would share what I learnt with you. The progress so far: The project is almost inished and can boast the restructured BMX mound and pathways, along with: • A new car park for the cricket pavil-
• The planting of £16,000 worth of ion trees • A re-surfaced car park on Shaw street • Installation of benches, picnic tables • New fencing throughout the park inand bins cluding in the horse ield • Development of the multi-user games area. Future developments: This is all great but we can all see there is still some work to be done to inish the job. Here’s a few of the things I found out they are still planning to do: • Lighting is still to be put in place from Park Side to Shaw Street, along with the repairing of existing light ittings. • Signs are to put up regarding the respect of the park • They are currently working with the Cricket Club to generate funding to renovate the Pavilion to improve changing facilities and to make it into a multiple use pavilion for the use of the Rugby and Football teams
