Book Review - Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd

Most of us, most of the time, plan our lives to some degree. We do things with friends and family, we watch TV, go shopping, have fun; other bits we get through because that’s life and it’s what we do. But imagine a chance meeting with a stranger, and a decision made in a heartbeat, unravelling everything so that nothing is ever the same again and there’s no way back. That’s what happens to Adam Kindred on his way to a work interview. A moment’s kindness on his behalf leads to a chasm opening up in his comfortable life. And into that black hole fall all the things he relied on his money, his home, his job, reputation, family. Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd is a thriller. One of those fantastically readable books you find yourself devouring at two o’clock in the morning - and all the time you’re asking yourself what you’d do if it happened to you. It’s smart and slick and actually very funny in places but it’s also terrifyingly believable with some interesting thoughts on identity and corruption in big business. William Boyd is a brilliant storyteller; he’s been shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won any number of other awards. If you haven’t read any of his books this is a thundering way to start; if you have, it’s as good as the best..

DVD Review — The Karate Kid

11

How do you remake a cult classic? Do you go for a straight remake of the original or do you try something very different whilst keeping to the original idea? Well, if it’s possible this 0ilm does something in-between. For starters, perhaps this should have been called The Kung-Fu Kid. With Jackie Chan as the “Mr Miyagi” or in this case “Mr Han” the change in the martial art was inevitable. However, the most important change has to be the setting. This time the 0ilm is set in China and apart from the gratuitous Great Wall of China scenes, this really works as you really feel for 12 year old Dre (Jaden Smith) who is suddenly isolated in this strange world. The 0ilm follows the same storyline as the original as we follow Dre’s developing friendship with Mr Han as he teaches him Kung Fu, to help overcome the bullies who are ruining his life. I was dubious about this 0ilm as I loved the original so much but I really enjoyed it and would de0initely recommend it.

Reader Recommendation Pattie and Carol from Swanwick have contacted me this month to tell me how wonderful they :ind their re:lexology with Dawn at Serenity Therapy. They visit Dawn together and told me they always :ind her warm and welcoming and that the home environment makes it feel like a ‘home from home’. Pattie suffers from Carpal Tunnel and is con:ident that re:lexology has prevented her from enduring a dif:icult operation and she says she always notices when it is time to go again, as the symptoms return. Re:lexology has also helped Carol with reducing high blood pressure. Carol added that even though Dawn does not claim to be able to work miracles, if they go in with a speci:ic issue, for example, headaches, Dawn will work on this area and without fail they have either dissipated or completely disappeared. Pattie and Carol also told me that they have Hopi Ear Candle therapy before they travel on a plane and they swear by it. Carol suffers from the excruciating pressure pain and says this treatment alleviates it. As a person who suffers from this, I will de:initely be trying this next time I :ly!!

Christmas Cake Icing Recipe

Following on from last months Christmas Cake Recipe, here are the details of how to do the fun bits‌. The icing Top Tip - ideally you should marzipan the cake and leave for a few weeks to fully harden before icing but the minimum that the marzipan should be left to set is 24hrs. Ingredients Marzipan 700g Marzipan Apricot Jam (or any mild flavoured jam) Icing Sugar (to dust surface)

Royal Icing 2 Egg Whites 500g Icing Sugar 1tbsp Lemon Juice

Method For the Marzipan - Paste the entire cake with the Jam to prevent the marzipan from sliding off. Sprinkle the surface with icing sugar and roll out half the marzipan into a circle shape (the marzipan should be 3/4cm thick) and place on the cake. Trim off any excess and roll into a long strip with the rest of the of the marzipan, the same thickness as the top. Split the strip into 2 parts and apply each strip to the side of the cake in turn, trim off the excess and leave to set. For the Royal Icing - Beat egg whites lightly and add sugar until the mixture holds its shape and then add lemon juice for desired texture and taste. When applying to the Christmas cake, once marzipan has dried, brush it with water before adding the rolled out icing. Use similar method to the marzipan for making the icing fit the cake and decorate as desired. Enjoy!!

Gardeners Calendar - December Root Cuttings Now is a great time to take root cuttings of some of your -leshier, thick rooted perennials such as Rubus and Verbascum. When doing this try and take as much root as possible and portion this off into several cuttings. Then slice the roots into 1-3 inch sections. (the thinner the root the longer the section). Plant 1cm deep in a tray of compost. For best results keep in a warm green house and ensure they are exposed to light when the root begins to show. The roots should be ready in spring to replant.
