Dessert of the Month - December is Brazil Nut Chocolate Roll

12

At Christmas you can’t beat a good yule log, so I thought I would provide you with exactly that...but with a twist!!

Ingredients 4 eggs 150g sugar 75g plain Flour 1 tsp baking powder

50g icing sugar 75g crushed brazil nuts (or nuts of your choice)

1 tsp vanilla essence A pinch of salt Jar of Chocolate spread

Method Pre-heat the oven to 400F or 200C. Beat the eggs and gradually add the sugar until the mixture becomes light coloured and thick. Leave to stand for a few minutes whilst you sift the Flour with the baking powder and the salt, then fold into the egg mixture and add the vanilla essence. Pour the mixture into a tin (approx 40cm x 25cm)lined with greaseproof paper and bake in the oven for approx 13 minutes. Immediately tip onto greaseproof paper sprinkled with icing sugar and carefully remove the paper that is now on top. Generously spread the chocolate spread and sprinkle the brazil nuts and roll up, wrap in paper and leave to cool. Once cooled, remove from paper and decorate with chocolate Flakes and icing sugar.

Book Review We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

15

We Need to Talk About Kevin, Lionel Shriver’s story of a Fictional high school massacre has sold more than a million copies, won the Orange Prize for Fiction and has just been turned into a Film. It’s easy to see why. This isn’t blood and guts – we don’t Find out the details of the killings until near the end. Thursday as Kevin’s mother Eva describes the event, is mostly a lurking sense of horror which pervades the book. But you always know where this book is heading and it makes the descriptions of Kevin’s growing up even more icily frightening. The story is told as a series of letters from Eva to her husband Franklin about their clever, manipulative and apparently sociopathic son who carries out a Columbine style slaughter at his high school. But this is a book which doesn’t take the easy way out. There are no pat answers to the question why, which everyone asks after this sort of atrocity. Eva is a complex character – almost as complex as her son. She and her husband try to bring their family up as well as they can. They’re human, they’re very different people and they both make mistakes, as all parents do all the time. The difference between Eva and Franklin, is that she, after failing to “bond” with Kevin as a baby, has continual fears about the always explainable behaviour of this seemingly unexceptional child while Franklin, believing the myth of childhood and families is determined to see only good in every circumstance. It’s a book which makes you think hard about the assumptions we make about parenting and human nature. It’s pitiless and disturbing and a very, very good read.

DVD Review - X-Men: First Class (12)

25

The X-Men franchise follows up on the recent success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine with the prequel stories of Professor X/Charles Xavier, Magneto/Erik Lehnsherr , Mystique/Raven and the Beast/Hank McCoy. Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr were close friends long before they became archenemies. They meet when Xavier rescues Lensherr, who is on a revenge mission fuelled by his hatred for the man who cruelly discovered his powers in a German concentration camp and twisted them for his own gain, Dr Klaus Schmidt (Kevin Bacon). United by a common foe Xavier and Lehnsherr team up with Raven and Hank McCoy to recruit other mutants and together they start to realise the potential of their awesome powers in time to save the world but not before circumstances cause a rift that will deFine their future. This Film is a vast improvement on the last two X-Men Films, living up to the standard set by the First two. James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender are central to this and are excellently cast as Xavier and Lensherr. The script is strong and keeps you guessing, even though you know how it’s going to end. Well worth the price and roll on the next one‌

Gardeners Calendar - December Prune apple and pear trees and cut down the canes of autumn fruiting raspberries Stake any young trees to prevent wind rock loosening the soil around the roots and damaging them. Dig over any beds you’re going to put new plants in next year so the frost has a chance to break down into the soil.

Top Tip If you’ve 3ish in a garden pond, put a plastic ball in so you don’t have to smash ice to prevent a build up of methane from decaying plant life, killing the 3ish
