Book Review Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant
Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant is a great antidote to the winter blues in recession obsessed England – even if it’s to show us that Financial woes are nothing new. This time we’re in Italy in the 16th century where the conditions of the time had a dramatic effect on the lives of one set of women in particular. By the turn of the 16th century, the price of wedding dowries had risen so high that most noble families could not afford to marry off more than one daughter to a fellow nobleman. The result was that the remaining young women - almost half the noblewomen in Italy - were sent to convents where they were forced to become nuns. Life in the convent was difFicult even for those who wanted to be there, so we can only imagine how it felt for those still wedded to the world outside. Windows were bricked up, contact with the outside world was virtually non-existent. Even music and luxuries such as books and pieces of furniture from home were removed by inspectors. The story of SeraFina, a 16-year-old who had a life and love outside the walls presents us with a compelling tale full of cultural and historical detail but with the pace and suspense of a thriller. Is she fated to a dusty old-age or can she ever return to a life where pleasure is not a sin beyond comprehension? Sarah Dunant’s novel, the third of her Italian historical trilogy, is based on the real history of the time. A former presenter of BBC2’s The Late Show and Woman’s Hour, Ms Dunant is also a Cambridge history graduate, so we’d imagine she knows her stuff. It certainly makes a change from UK 2012.
