The Food of Love - Steak Diane
8
If you are looking for something to cook for your loved one this Valentines (or you just fancy a tasty meal), why not try this recipe for Steak Diane…. I know it’s one of my favourites!
Ingredients 2 x Fillet Steaks 3-4 Medium sized shallots 150g Button mushrooms 250ml Double cream 75ml Brandy 1 x Clove garlic 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 15g butter
1 tbsp. Dijon Mustard 1 tbsp. Lemon juice 1 tbsp. Chopped parsley 1 tbsp. Chopped thyme Salt & pepper 2 tbsp. Olive Oil
Method First prepare the steaks by trimming the rind, Blattening with a rolling pin and seasoning with salt and pepper. Now seal the meat by heating the olive oil in a hot pan and sauté the steaks for 2 minutes on each side. For the sauce, in a large pan heat the butter and add the shallots. Allow to soften and then add the sliced mushrooms. Cook for two minutes before stirring in the sliced and crushed garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, thyme and lemon juice. Now tilt the pan away from you, pour in the brandy at the front of the pan and allow the Blames to ignite the vapours (or use a match). BrieBly remove from the heat and swirl to let the Blame go out. Return to the heat and add the cream, allowing the sauce to thicken, before adding the steaks and cooking to preference. Garnish with parsley and serve with the potatoes and vegetables of your choice. To Advertise please call Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638

Book Review - The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Help is the kind of novel any book club would love. Set in Jackson Mississippi in 1962, it’s a million miles from everyone’s idea of the decade of the hippies and the Beatles. In Jackson it’s still cotton plantations, white country clubs, and wives who stay home and organise benefits for the junior league while the black “help” clean their houses and cook and raise the white babies, though they aren’t trusted not to steal the silver. But things are just starting to change. While the obnoxious Hilly is persuading fellow league members that they should have toilets built in the yards outside their houses for the help (that way they don’t have to use the same facilities), college educated plantation daughter Skeeter wonders what happened to her black maid who suddenly left and decides to write a book from the viewpoint of the maids living around Jackson. It’s a risky business for all of them – these are still the days of the Klu Klux Klan. But Kathryn Stockett creates a warm, sometimes funny, sometimes shocking story of three women - Skeeter and maids Abigail and Minny - who become friends against all the odds. A mix of the mindboggling daily reality of lives on both sides of the colour divide, and the tension and suspense of the conspiracy needed to get their book written and published, makes for a gripping and fast read.

This month I took my (not so little) pooch to have a fur-cut by Emma at Pedi-Pawz. As silly as it sounds, I always feel very anxious leaving him for a couple of hours in a strange place with people he doesn’t know (I have separation anxiety, not him!!) However, as soon as I got to Emma’s house, I knew that he (& I) were going to be Bine. He was allowed to watch TV in the living room once he had Binished (his favourite past-time), which is great because he has never got along with the cages, even as a pup. Emma trimmed him exactly as I asked and he smelled beautiful. We are both really happy with the cut and with the prices she charges, we will be going back again.

The Origins of Valentines Day - From Weddings to Werewolves!
The origins of Valentines Day can be traced back to the 5th Century when it was established by Pope Gelasius I and it is supposed to mark the Christian martyr and Saint, Valentine. The true origins of St Valentine upon whom Valentines day is based are not entirely clear. However the most popular theory is that St Valentine was a Roman priest who executed during the reign of Claudius II. Valentine was arrested and imprisoned for marrying Christian couples. At Birst Claudius took a liking to the priest but after he refused to convert to Roman paganism and instead tried to convert the emperor he was condemned to death. In a more romantic (and highly dubious) telling of this story, before he was executed Valentine wrote to the jailers daughter, whom he fallen in love after supposedly curing her of her blindness. He Binished the note “from your Valentine” - The Birst Valentines Card.
Pagan origins - spring cleaning and human sacrifice Another theory on the origins of Valentines Day is that it was actually created to replace the Roman holiday of Lupercalia, which was celebrated form the 13th-the 15th of February and was a festival of fertility and puriBication. The Lupercalia festival is known as the “wolf festival” in honour of Lupa a she-wolf who suckled the infant orphans Romulus and Remus , the founders of Rome. However, this may well have emerged from the roman festival Februa - a puriBication festival which is basically “spring cleaning”. This festival was linked to the Roman god of the dead and purity Februus and gave it’s name to the Roman month Februarius, which later became February. Another possibility is that the festival originated from the roman festival Lykaia, which involved an ancient and secret ritual based on Mount Lykaion in Arcadia. It was this ritual that was thought to given birth to the myth of the Werewolf . At night the cult would climb the slopes of the mountain and make a SacriBice to Zeus Lykaios (the wolf zeus). During the ritual, human entrails were mixed with animals and eaten by the participants. Whoever ate the human Blesh was then supposed to turn into a wolf . Cupid
17
You may know him more as the chubby baby who Blutters around using his unfeasibly small wings and Biring arrows at people to make them fall in love, but in fact he is the immortal son of Roman Gods Venus and Mars. In the original myth, Venus, who is jealous of the beauty of a mortal princess called Psyche, in an act of revenge instructs Cupid to shoot Psyche with one his arrows so that she falls in love with a vile creature. Of course all does not go quite to plan and Cupid is startled by the waking Psyche and scratches himself with his own arrow, causing him to fall in love with her. What follows next is as convoluted as all the best myths are but sufBice to say Venus is not best pleased and places many obstacles between the young lovers to stop them being together. However, in the end love conquers all when Cupid makes a plea to Jupiter, king of the Gods, to allow them to be together. Jupiter turns Psyche into an immortal so she and Cupid can be together forever. A very Bitting ending for Valentines day!
Roses are red… The History of the Valentines Day Card The valentines day card is thought to originate back in the 15th century where the card would simply contain a poem expressing the senders love. The earliest surviving example was written by Charles, the Duke of Orleans to his wife when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following the battle of Agincourt. However the original “Roses are red…” verse, so commonly used, can be Birst found in Edmund Spenser’s 1590 poem, The Faerie Queen. It was the Victorian era which saw the modern paper valentine Blourish where the growth of a cheaper postal service allowed cards to be sent anonymously. This led to the mass production of cards in factories. Now the valentines industry is worth well over a billion pounds a year in the UK alone and over 25 million cards are sent.!
