Welcome to Amber Valley Voice

This year I am once again full of resolutions but the main one is to make them last longer than January!! I’m seriously thinking about another itness challenge and if that is one of yours, then maybe the best place to start would be Amber Valley Training. If you are looking for something to do this month, Chatsworth's elevenses looks interesting - particularly the talk by the Duke and Duchess. Also, Swanwick Hall’s production of the Little Shop of Horrors sounds like a fantastic night out and a good way to support our local schools. If you are a parent with a child under 5 and are looking for ways to get involved in the local community, why not visit Swanwick Cygnets (more information on page 18). After last months edition, Seals Fodder Room have let me know that they have had a fantastic response to Miller’s dog food and that it is ‘ lying off the shelves’ because it has proved so popular….I’m not surprised at that price. Don’t forget to visit Serenity Therapy to take full advantage of the discount available exclusively to Amber Valley Voice readers, a perfect treat to help you relax after Christmas. This month I tried an Indian Head Massage….read all about it on page 14. If after the Christmas lull you are fancying warm, comfort food, check out the winter vegetable soup recipe on page 8…….failing that pop along to Owen Taylors and buy yourself one of the amazing hand made pies, I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

Reader Recommends Mike from Swanwick contacted me this month and told us that he has had work done by both Anthony from Complete Plastering and Mick from MKS Electrical and Alarms. He told me he had some work that needed completing before Christmas and he was really pleased because both Anthony and Mick were able to squeeze it in around their busy schedules. Mike said that he was really happy with the result and was very impressed with the speed and cleanliness at which they worked. They were both really friendly and professional and couldn’t do enough to help, despite a few last minute changes to his request. In fact, he said he was so impressed, he has already scheduled in for them both to return in the summer months for some further maintenance and developments of his home.
Fast, friendly, reliable service with no mess All plastering work undertaken, including: • Artex cover-ups, • Repair work • Dry lining Competitive Prices Fully Insured For a free, no obligation quote or advice call Anthony on:

Winter Vegetable Soup Recipe
8
Serves approx 6 If like me, January is your least favourite month and all you want to eat is warm comfort food….check out this recipe for a yummy vegetable soup. Ingredients 2 Potatoes 2 Turnips 2 Carrots 2 sticks of celery Some cabbage leaves 2 small onions 225g of Green Beans
170g of Green Garden Peas 1420ml of Water 28g of butter A teaspoon of salt (or to preferred taste) A sprinkling of pepper (or to preferred taste)
Method Peel and chop all the vegetables into chunks and add together to a pan of the boiling water along with the butter and the seasoning. Leave for at least 1 hour or until the liquid has reduced to half the size and serve when you are happy with taste and consistency.
Editors Choice During the festive season I really fancied some good quality hand made food….that I hadn’t made! So I popped along to Owen Taylor Butchers and picked up a selection of the award winning pies that people have told me about. I couldn’t believe how delicious they were and every bit of meat contained in them was perfect (unlike the supermarket pies that contain mostly gristle). My family enjoyed them so much over the period, my in-laws even purchased some to take back up North before they left!!

Book Review - The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
There are some major historical events in The Lacuna by American novelist Barbara Kingsolver. She won the 2010 Orange Prize for Fiction for this huge sprawling story (670 pages) which takes in the death of Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky (pub quiz buffs will know he was assassinated with an ice pick in Mexico); the McCarthy witch-hunts of the 40s and 50s against alleged communists in the USA; and the lives of bohemian Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. But this isn’t a history book. Kingsolver moves like quicksilver between the dealings of history and individual lives. Her story plays with the idea that great events take place while ordinary people are doing ordinary things - making their dinner or going for a walk. Her protagonist, Harrison Shepherd is an “odd egg” - cook and secretary to Rivera, ally, servant and friend of Frida Kahlo. He lives with and meets extraordinary people, quietly and wryly observes and records in notebooks and looks for a life of invisibility. Inevitably, living so close to history, he gets caught up in its coat tails and his passion for writing shows how dangerous words can be. This is a story about identity and loyalty and some dark times of recent history, powerfully written and exceptionally readable. Don’t let the length put you off – Harrison Shepherd is an immensely likeable character with the power to illuminate the big stuff going on around him. This is an epic you won’t want to come to the end of.

DVD Review — Toy Story 3
11
The third instalment of the Toy Story series comes over a decade after the last release and it’s fair to say it hasn’t lost any of the magic of the First two Films. Time has moved on for the toys as well and the new Film Finds them coming to terms with the end of Andy’s childhood as he prepares to head off to University. Following a mix-up during packing the toys end up being donated to a day care centre, and whilst at First all things seem well the toys soon realise all is not as it seems and they have to launch a daring escape. As well as all the old stars there are lots of new characters to meet. Lots-O-Hugging Bear, Big Baby, Chuckles the Clown and Barbie even Finally Finds her Ken. As with all the Toy Story Films this is a must see for adults and kids alike . It is Brilliantly made, well scripted, well animated and well voiced but most of all it feels like the makers and actors treated the Film with as much love as we all give to our favourite childhood toys.

Editors Choice As part of the New Years Resolution ritual, I have resolved to take every opportunity available to try new things. So, this month I tried an Indian Head Massage from Dawn at Serenity Therapy. The Indian head massage is based on the Aurevedic system of healing which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. After the stress and strain of an enjoyable but busy Christmas period and a busy week of work I was in real need of something to help me Find my balance again. I didn’t know what to expect but Dawn made me feel comfortable and relaxed before she began. The massage began with the shoulders and neck and as someone who stores all their tension here, I really felt the beneFits. Dawn then moved on to my head and face as she worked on the chakra’s to allow energy to Flow, preventing the build up of negative energy which can cause stress, tension, aches and pains. Dawn Finished the massage with some Reiki healing and although I don’t profess to understand how it works, all I can tell you is it does. I could feel the effects of the energy Flowing as the Reiki took place and afterwards I felt calm and relaxed and the next day I felt really energised.

Give yourself a fresh start for 2011 at this friendly family run gym?
I was invited to try out this new gym at Somercotes and although I’m no gym bunny I was really impressed with the experience. The Free Induction Upon arrival the staff were really friendly and took the time to Gind out what I was looking to get out of gym membership. I was assigned a personal trainer, James, who designed me a 6– week tailor made Gitness programme (available to all monthly members), which took into account my goals, injuries and medical issues and my likes and dislikes. They even offer individually tailored diet sheets on request. James then Vincent, Gary and James will give took me around all the machines and showed you a warm welcome. me how to work them. Ordinarily, (and I have in the past) just nodded and gone along with what the trainer is telling me as they gallop through the information and you feel silly if you ask any questions. However, this instantly felt different, James took his time and made sure I understood what he was telling me. This made me feel much less self conscious than ever before…… I even felt able to ask all those questions and I didn’t feel stupid at all!
Women's Only Gym The best bit for me personally speaking was the fact that there is a completely separate gym section for women only. I have always found a mixed gym a little intimidating, as I am not particularly Git . If this doesn’t bother you the main multi gym area is mixed. But if like me, you also value the ability to train relatively privately, away from the main area, then you will really appreciate feeling more relaxed and able to train the way you want to in the women’s only area. Fantastic Gym Facilities
I was absolutely amazed by the full range of gym equipment that was available. If you are already a gym bunny, then you have probably already tried vibration plates, which offer an intense workout for those with less free time. They also have all the Cardio Vascular equipment and free weights which are every bit as good, if not better than the average big brand gym, except with a friendly atmosphere that you won’t Gind elsewhere. What’s more, for the serious athletic types, there are treatment rooms available and the helpful staff can even Gind the right theraAmenities pist for you to help with your problem. Once I had Ginished my gym session, I then got a tour of the extra facilities that are available to both members and non-members. The comfortable coffee shop allows you to make the gym an even more relaxing experience. There is also a supplements shop available to purchase everything from specialist body-building equipment and supplements to ordinary sports clothes, vitamins and minerals. Finally, if you still want to look good but aren’t really a gym person, or you have a holiday coming up, then you can still pay a visit for the sunbeds and new for January 2011 - a Sauna.
Thinking of Joining? One fantastic bene it of becoming a member of Amber Valley Training is the fact the there is no joining fee. What’s more, the fees are less than £1 a day. This is amazingly cheap and makes it more than affordable to stick to that resolution you made. As if that isn’t enough, the lexibility of membership is brilliant, as you are able to take a break from the monthly fee, when you go on holiday for example, and you will not incur any punitive fees….awesome! Gardeners Calendar - January Lawn Maintenance It is essential this month that (weather permitting) you repair any damage to the lawn to ensure a good turn out in spring/ summer. Therefore, replace any divots or dead areas with new turf. Also, make sure you repair any lawn edges, especially around bedding areas. If your lawn has suffered from water logging during the heavy snow period, put some fork holes in the lawn and ill with sharp sand to ensure that any excess water is absorbed. Don’t forget to recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch this month.
