Welcome to the July edition of Amber Valley Voice., Summer rolls and (at the time of writing this) some sunshine has arrived to brighten our days - that’s probably jinxed it now! This is our second month delivering to an additional 1000 homes, bringing our circulation up to 3500 homes. We now deliver to most homes in Swanwick Riddings and Leabrooks and have extended to a few areas in Somercotes. This has allowed us to reach even more of the local community. We really appreciate all the feedback we receive from our current readers, including their recommendations on local businesses, their input on community events and their opinions on the magazine...good or bad. DVD Review - The Adjustment Bureau

When this +ilm +irst came out at the cinema, I have to admit I did not fancy it. I thought “Oh no not another CIA/FBI/Bourne Identity, cop chasing +ilm”. However, I was totally wrong and I can’t rate this +ilm highly enough. It stars Matt Damon as David Norris, a charismatic politician with a glittering career that is about to take off, until it looks like a stupid moment from his past is about to derail it. However, just when David is about to accept defeat in the senate election a chance encounter with the enigmatic Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt) changes his life forever and brings him into contact with a world he never imagined existed. The Adjustment Bureau is an adaptation of a short story by Philip K Dick and if you have seen any of the other adaptions of his fantastic stories, such as Minority Report and I Robot, you’ll know that you are in for a mind-twisting roller coaster that has you rooting for the protagonist who is +ighting against the odds to outwit external forces beyond his control. This +ilm was a really pleasant surprise and I would happily recommend it to all our readers.

The Fry Chronicles - by Stephen Fry

You either like Stephen Fry (clever, entertaining, gossipy and funny) or you can’t stand him (smug, too-clever-by-half and everwhere). If your only experience of him has been the strange and acquired taste of TV’s QI, or the glorious Lord (or General) Melchett in Blackadder, you may not be aware that he’s written four novels and two volumes of autobiography – the latest of which is The Fry Chronicles. The book moves on from his nefarious adolescence – banged up for a month in a young offenders institution after running amock with someone else’s credit cards – through Cambridge university where he started a lifelong writing and performing friendship with Hugh Laurie and on into the manic burst of 80s comedy which produced performers such as Rik Mayall, Ben Elton and Alexei Sayle. His showbiz stories are full of name-dropping and they’re funny – not luvvie - and not always complimentary. He writes exceptionally well. He describes his love of words and language and you could never doubt it – his prose is honed and perfect. What he does try to do, (and with some honesty), is to pull back the mask of con:idence he wears – in his own words “so easily that its features often lift into a smirk that looks like complacency and smugness” and contrast it with the “anxiety, self-doubt self disgust and fear” in which he says he actually lives. He evidently has relentless depths of insecurity – he’s been diagnosed manic depressive and doesn’t let himself off lightly to say the least, but it’s never an uncomfortable read – although it is sometimes quite rude and will almost certainly make you laugh.

Meat of the Month - July is Lamb

The recipe this month is for Butter:lied leg of lamb. This recipe is perfect for a BBQ but can be cooked on a grill if the weather turns. A versatile dish that can be served simply with salad and new potatoes or green beans and dauphinoise potatoes. Ingredients I small chopped onion 1 boned and butter0lied leg of lamb. approx 2.25 kg or 5lb (why not ask your 150ml Olive oil butcher to do this for you?) 2 tablespoons of chopped rosemary 6 tablespoons of chopped mint 1 tablespoon ground black pepper Marinade 3 cloves crushed garlic Juice of 2 lemons

Method For Marinade: Place the lamb in a large plastic bag and add the garlic, onion, olive oil, rosemary, mint, pepper and lemon juice. Ensure the lamb is thoroughly coated and place in a refrigerator for about 6-8 hours, turning regularly. To cook: Remove the meat from the bag, taking care to preserve the marinade. Preheat a grill or barbecue to a high temperature. Grill the lamb about 10cm above the coals (depending on the heat) for about 8 minutes on each side,. Baste regularly with the marinade, until it is browned on both sides. Then move the grill a little further away from the coals and cook for a further 6-10 minutes on each side, whilst continuing to baste. Test the meat frequently until it is cooked to your preference. Carve into thin slice and serve with a fresh salad and your choice of potatoes for a delicious summer evening meal.
