He had arranged for MKS Electrical and Alarms to have some work done after seeing their advert in the Amber Valley Voice. Mr Appleby wanted to let us know about the excellent friendly service he received. He said the engineer was clean and ef9icient and that the cost of the work was very reasonable. Editors Choice Although I provided a review of Wok This Way last month, much to the dismay of my scales, I can’t stop going back! I love the food and each time we try something different, and without fail, it is fresh, delicious and a taste sensation. My favourite dishes this month have been the beef Chow Mein and chicken with pineapple. For both dishes the ingredients were so fresh and full of flavour. The pineapple was tender and juicy and the sweet and sour sauce was the best I had ever tasted‌. unfortunately for my waistline, I can’t get enough!!!

Christmas Cake Recipe
If you are a Christmas cake maker, you will probably know that now is the time to start making the cake and you will probably have a tried and tested recipe. However, if this is your first time, why not make an early resolution and start making that cake….and here’s a recipe to help you! Ingredients 250g plain flour A pinch of salt 1/2tsp mixed spice 1/2tsp ground cinnamon A dash of vanilla essence 200g butter 200g muscovado sugar
4 eggs (lightly beaten) 2tbsp black treacle 2tbsp marmalade 900g mixed dried fruit 150g glace cherries 100g blanched, chopped almonds Brandy
Method Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 2/150C and grease and line a round tin with parchment paper. Cream butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl, adding the treacle, marmalade and vanilla essence until fluffy and light. Sieve the flour, salt, mixed spices and cinnamon. Add the eggs to the creamed butter, a little at a time, followed by a tablespoon of the flour mix. Repeat until well mixed and then add dried fruit, cherries and almonds. Put the mixture in the tin and bake for approx. 3hrs. Once cooked, remove and allow to cool before placing on a wire rack. Once cool, create a few holes and pour over approx . 50ml of Brandy. Let the Brandy soak in and wrap in foil and place in airtight container (holes side up). For an extra special cake, add in the same amount of brandy each week up until you are ready to ice the cake. See you next month for icing!

24 A SHOW OF LIGHT AT LEABROOKS IN NOVEMBER John Whitby and Greg Howard have combined forces to present an important new exhibition of their paintings at Leabrooks Gallery from Saturday, 6th November,2910 until the end of the month. Both artists have featured in the general exhibition space in the Gallery but this is the first time that visitors will have had the opportunity to view and purchase from a broader range of their work. Each of the artists find inspiration in the finer details as well as the more usual aspects of landscape and both focus on the shifting nature of light - but each of them brings to his subjects his own distinctive interpretation and colour palette as well as his take on the visual dynamics of a scene. Greg Howard, a water colourist, employs a technique which is surprisingly dramatic for his medium: he conveys depth in his images which are made all the more powerful by the sudden explosions of light at their centre. His paintings, which are often quite small, demand attention! John Whitby's water colour and gouache paintings, are frequently larger and softer in colour but are equally arresting because of their gentle focus and suggestion of harmony. Here the translucent quality of light is conveyed in broader brush strokes and less sharp outlines. The work of both artists, John Whitby and Greg Howard, will be of interest to those with a passion for local scenes and everyone who appreciates fine art. Also, in the run up to Christmas, why not call in for an early mince pie during the weekend of 27th -28th November, 2010 when there will be jewellery demonstration together with a pottery market? We are always pleased to see you!

Book Review - Lustrum by Robert Harris
Politics in Roman times were nothing if not cutthroat. Alliances and betrayals were the name of the game. Alpha-males like Julius Caesar and Pompey ruled with sublime indifference to the needs or wishes of the common herd. Psychopaths and playboys pulled the strings of political intrigue. Lustrum, by Robert Harris, is a historical thriller, told through the voice of Tiro, the secretary and slave of Cicero who was a famous orator, consul and one of the cleverest men of his time. Although it is a novel, Tiro (and Cicero and the other characters) existed in real life and some of Cicero’s great speeches as recorded by Tiro, provide the compelling backstory for the book. It’s a wry and human book – these are all human beings, even if they’re (lawed ones and the descriptions of the smells and tastes and casual cruelty of the times make it far more than just a page turner. Robert Harris has a deserved reputation as an international bestseller – a former journalist and BBC reporter, his most recent book before Lustrum was The Ghost, a thriller about a former British prime minister writing his memoirs (sound familiar?) which was turned into a Pierce Brosnan/Ewan McGregor (ilm by Roman Polanski. Harris knows his politics and his insider’s approach shows us one thing – times may change, power lives on.

DVD Review — Iron Man 2
27
Tony Stark (Downey Jr) is back….but with a difference. In this sequel, he has developed a problem that is shortening his life dramatically, so he has adopted the principles of James Dean - “live fast, die young”. Whilst he is partaking in one of his dangerous hobbies, his arch enemy (unbeknown to Stark) Whiplash (Rourke), unleashes an attack on him to exact his revenge. This, coupled with the issues of the Government taking Stark Industries to court in order to detain the Iron Man suits for military use, does not make for an easy time for Stark! With an excellent cast and as much fun as the =irst, the plot isn’t deep but it sure is entertaining! If you enjoyed the =irst =ilm, you’ll enjoy this but even if you haven’t it doesn’t really matter because it is excellent, all action, explosive fun!
