Welcome to Amber Valley Voice

3

Welcome to the October Edition of the Amber Valley Voice. Despite the recent heat wave the onset of Autumn is upon us. This is one of my favourite times of the year. I love the colours in the trees and the fun and games to be had at events such as Halloween and Bon"ire Night. As usual there is lots to do in the local area so if your looking for a way to get involved then check out the Things To Do on pages 6 & 7 for some ideas. The recent news around the potential housing developments in Swanwick has caused some controversy in recent weeks. I would like to applaud those who have given up their time to stand by the courage of their convictions and set up a petition against this. If you would like to know more there are some details on page 18. I’m really happy to say there are plenty of other community contributions to the magazine this month. We have received updates on the local priorities from our Riddings and Ironville Safer Neighbourhood team on page 23 and there are some details on the Jessop Medical Practice Patient Participation Group on page 29. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to new and returning advertisers. I am happy to let you all know that after the success we have had with this magazine over the last year we will be launching an Alfreton and Broadmeadows edition of the Amber Valley Voice at the start of December, we only hope it is as well received as the Swanwick, Riddings and Leabrooks edition!

Happy Reading! Emily

Ingredients Meat 1 large duck 1 1/2 tbsp Chinese Eive spice 1/2 tbsp salt 1/2 tsp ground ginger Salt Small piece fresh ginger 2 large sprig onions

Plum Sauce A dozen plums 2 tbsp water 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp vinegar 1/2 tsp Chinese Eive spice 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp chilli powder 75 grams brown sugar

Method To prepare the duck: Wash the duck and pat dry with kitchen roll. Mix together the Chinese Eive spice and salt and rub liberally over the whole duck. Rub the ground ginger inside the duck then chop and crush the fresh ginger and chop the spring onions and stuff inside the duck. To roast the duck, preheat an oven to 170 degrees (gas mark 3). Place the duck in a large roasting tray and cook in the over for around two hours. Every half hour pour away the fat from the duck. If you like it extra crispy turn the heat up to 220 degrees for the last 20-30 minutes. To serve, shred the duck using two forks. To prepare the plum sauce Remove the stones from the plums and place in a pan with the water. Bring to the boil and then simmer whilst stirring adding the Chinese Eive spice, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger and chilli powder. Heat until the plums break down and the sauce thickens. Add the sugar to taste. The skins can be removed if preferred. To serve Present the shredded duck along side the warm plum sauce, the cucumber and spring onion and the steamed pancakes.

13 Editors Choice Last month my oven broke down so I spoke with Safeway Electrical who were able to identify it was a simple problem to *ix. They ordered the part and were able to come over in a few days at my convenience. I found out that although they are relatively new to the area they are a family run business who have been in the trade for over 25 years. They put a real emphasis on customer service and needless to say they *ixed my oven in no time and I’ve had no problems since. I can highly recommend them to our readers

Book Review Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

Life moves slowly and along narrow tramlines in 1950s Ireland. Opportunities for young women to break out of the constraints of family, church, and boring work are few and far between, so when Eilis Lacey is offered the chance to emigrate and take up a job in a department store in Brooklyn, New York it is, as we would say today, a “no-brainer”. Even so, leaving everything she knows and starting a new life in a city which seems to belong to a different century, not just another continent, is a painful and disorientating business. This is despite Eilis’ parish priest insisting that parts of Brooklyn are just like Ireland, with Irish people everywhere. Just as she starts to embrace 20th century America, with central heating, a love affair with a handsome Italian American and the chance to re-invent herself, Eilis is called back to Ireland. Her new-found é migré status gives her a complicating glamour in Wexford which makes her realise how far she has travelled and how difEicult it is to go back home. Brooklyn by Colm Toibin has a serious and thoughtful heart. But it’s truly joyful in places and the observational humour is sly. – A snooty Irish grocer admonishing her employee that “no-one likes Elies, especially not on a Sunday” for instance, has an Alan Bennett ring. The novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and it won the Costa Award. It’s got a lovely old-fashioned feel to it and is very simply told. It packs quite an emotional punch; but the writing seems deliberately understated, underlining the drama of Eilis’ choices between what she wants and what she has to do.

DVD Review - THOR (12)

25

As the latest "ilm off the production line of fantastic "ilms based on Marvel comics I was really looking forward to THOR and I’m glad to say I wasn’t disappointed. Thor has been prepared to take over the throne of Asgard from his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) since he was a child but he clearly still has many lessons to learn. His reckless actions place the kingdom at risk and his father has no choice but to banish him to Earth. Stripped of his powers Thor must learn what it takes to be a true king before he can return to Asgard to rescue his home from an evil power. There are some good performances including Natalie Portman as Jane Frost and Chris Hemsworth who is excellent as Thor and I would expect to see plenty more of him in the future (and not just in the probable sequel!). Thor is everything you would expect from this type of "ilm, a good story, vividly imagined with great special effects but most of all it is great entertainment!

Gardeners Calendar - October

As soon as dahlias and other summer Elowering bulbs and tubers start showing leaf blackening from frost, lift and store them. Leave them to dry out for three or four days, cut stems back to no more than 3 inches and store upside down in a cool place for the winter (above 4 degrees). Plant spring bulbs. Daffodils can go in a bit earlier than tulips which like it to be properly cool before planting. If you want to get evergreens started this is a good month. They’ll keep growing during the winter and don’t need so much moisture.

Top Tip Plant early bulbs away from the edge of borders then you can put spring bedding in to disguise their dying leaves when they *inish *lowering.
