Book Review Nightwoods by Charles Frazier

American writer Charles Frazier’s books drip atmosphere. His :irst, Cold Mountain, was made into a :ilm. And even while you’re reading the most recent - Nightwoods - you can see the likely movie scenes in your mind’s eye. But don’t get the idea that he writes to a formula. His writing is very and to the point but almost poetic in the way he describes the landscape around the semi derelict mountain lake tourist lodge where young Luce acts as caretaker – an almost-job which gives her plenty of room to hide from her past. It’s what she wants – a quiet life with no questions asked, nights of Nashville country music on the radio and yellow lights on the far side of the lake. Then her murdered sister’s almost feral children turn up with a social worker who offers her the option of looking after them or seeing them taken into care. The children are strange; hell bent on setting :ire to everything. The people towed along in their wake are lethal. This is part love story, part thriller. Whether Luce and the children and the slightly dysfunctional people on her side of the divide can be any match for the unexploded violence which waits for them all is what drives the moody narrative of the book, but it’s as much about the characters and the sense of place, as rushing through the story. Maybe the Hollywood movie will be good. You might like to get the book while you’ve still got a chance to enjoy its style and subtlety.

Reader Recommends Ann from Riddings contacted me again this month to tell me that she had used Steve from S.T.Roo8ing and that she would like to recommend his work. Ann said that “Steve had come to resolve a leak that they had but he ended up resolving a few other issues! He replaced some lead around the chimney which stopped the leaking in the loft and replaced a cracked roof tile. After inviting me up the ladders to demonstrate that the damage was legitimate...after my decline, he disappeared back up the ladders and came down with footage of the damage on his phone!! He was really reasonably priced, he arrived on time and worked really hard and I can’t recommend him enough. We’ll certainly be having him back in the spring for another job.”

16 This month we are bringing you an interesting walk to help you stretch your legs and make the most of the summer sun (if it ever arrives!) There will be plenty of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead but as always make sure to ensure their safety & abide by the country code at all times. As always, if you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638. 4 Mile Circular Walk from Pentrich via Butterley Reservoir Another great walk for you and your dog. There are some fantastic views across to Crich Stand and a chance to see some landmarks relating to the Pentrich Revolution. The route will take about 2 hours. It is fairly even but there are a couple of relatively steep uphill sections. The terrain is mixed and a good pair of boots and long trousers are advised to avoid stinging plants on the paths.

Begin at St Matthews Church in Pentrich. Walk down in the direction of the Dog Inn taking a left before the pub onto Asher Lane towards Ripley. Follow Asher Lane , crossing the road to stay on the pavement. Immediately after you pass under the A38 bridge turn left up a concrete track. Follow footpath signs down a narrow track with a large hedge on the left. Carryon to the gate and cross the railway line before making your way up towards the reservoir. Walk along the path with the reservoir on your left. Take care to ensure your dogs are under control and do not disturb any fishermen. At the end of the reservoir turn right, walking along Butterley Lane. At the end of Butterley Lane turn right back onto Asher Lane. Carry on back under the A38 bridge and take and immediate left onto a footpath. Walk along the footpath until it breaks into two paths. Take the left hand path leading down towards the canal. Take care along this stretch of track, it may be muddy and slightly overgrown. with every purchase of Millers At the end of the path there are a Complete Dog Food with this coupon large set of steep steps. At the top of these turn right, walking along the A610. At the traffic lights turn right onto the B6013. Walk along the path and take care crossing the road at the Devonshire Arms.

Carry on past the farm until you reach the old mill. Cross the road here and take a narrow footpath up the side of a house. At the end of the path pass through the gate into a field and walk uphill keeping the hedge on your left up to the top of the field where you will find a stile. Cross the stile and continue up another field , again keeping the hedge on your right. Take some time to look out across to Crich Stand for some fantastic views! At the end of the field there will be another stile. Cross into another field and continue along until you reach another stile. This stile will take you right into another field. Walk along with the hedge on your left until you reach a stone gap. Pass through the gap and head up towards Pentrich, picking up a path that takes you to a stile in the hedge. Cross the stile and head across the field towards St Matthews Church. Pass through the graveyard and join the main path that takes you away from the church and down the steps to where you began the walk.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Swanwick & Riddings Safer Neighbourhood update

23

In July 2012 Derbyshire police restructured the Safer Neighbourhood policing teams to offer a better service to you, and to work more in conjunction with our local authority partners. This means that the of:icers who cover the Riddings area now work alongside of:icers from Somercotes. PC Mark Gibbs, PCSO Paul Hubber and PCSO Meikel Miller have joined up with PC Chris Anthony, PCSO Mark Rogers and PCSO Chris Bannister. The team, who now cover Riddings, Ironville, Somercotes, Swanwick, Leabrooks and Pye Bridge will continue to offer the same service and to target community concerns. Recently the area has suffered from a number of thefts from gardens and sheds. We would urge residents to help reduce the risk of having items stolen by making sure sheds, outbuildings and any garden items are secure. Items like hanging baskets can be secured with strong cable ties and we would advice people to remove items of garden furniture from view, preferably storing them in a locked shed or garage when not in use. Always make sure that sheds and outbuildings are secure and consider investing in good quality locks, alarmed locks or screws that once :itted cannot be removed. 25 How often do you say to yourself “I shouldn’t have done that” It may apply to many aspects of life, but where manual work applies, it can have more serious implications. So often we think “ I’ll just ,inish this gardening” then injure ourselves because our muscles are physically tired, but this becomes even more problematic when we really need to carry on. You can’t move house and stop in the middle because you are tired and if your work is manual, you simply have to continue. To keep injuries to a minimum, there are a few rules to keep in mind, especially if you are more vulnerable eg a builder, electrician, plumber or gardener for instance. The best rule is to think about your FEET. F- Fit –are you ,it to do the job or is someone else better suited? Does it need to be done at all? Or is there a tool you can use to make things easier? E- Environment – Are you in an awkward space? Can anything be moved to make your job easier? Are there dangers which need to be considered ,irst? E- Effort – Consider what you are moving, carrying or working with and the strain on your body in a particular position. Can it be made easier? T – Time – Are you in a hurry? Rushing a job puts pressure on us making muscles work harder than they need to and we tend Registered Osteopaths to take risks when we are short of time. Spreading the load by taking breaks gives and Physiotherapists who can help in relieving your muscles time to recover and reduces injupain ries. And if you are moving things – think FEET again – they need to be pointing in the direction you are going, to avoid twisting which is one of the high risk factors for back and rib injuries – but don’t look at them –look where you are going too! DVD Review - This Means War (12)

26

When two best friends and CIA Agents fall for the same woman….there will inevitably only be one winner. Lauren (Witherspoon) has been unlucky in love and keeps bumping into her ex and his ,iancé e around town...we’ve all been there. However, when her friend registers her on a dating website and she meets Tuck (Tom Hardy) she thinks she has found the man of her dreams until she bumps into FDR (Chris Pine) in the video store….. This is a fast paced modern romcom with plenty of masculine action in the form of ,ights, explosions and CIA tracing gadgets! This ,ilm is great fun to watch and although it does have its cheesy moments, it is funny and entertaining. The male viewer has Witherspoon and lots of explosions but the female viewer has Hardy and Pine and a feel good happy ending! It probably isn’t going to win any Oscars or awards for cinematography but it is well worth a watch if you fancy a bit of escapism for the evening.

Gardeners Calendar - August

29

This is a great time for seed collection – there’s nothing better than plants for free! Snip off seed heads when they’re dry and place in labelled paper bags or envelopes. The seeds will tumble out when they’re ready and can either be sown early to overwinter for next year where appropriate or if stored in labelled screw top jars and kept in a cool place they will be ready for spring sowing. Prune climbing or rambling roses which don’t repeat flower once they’ve finished flowering. Also cut out old fruited canes on raspberries. Clear out any debris or fallen leaves from ponds – the fewer nutrients there are in the water, the less likely you are to get algal growth.

Top Tip If you’re a cook as well as a gardener, take advantage of an abundance of herbs by freezing them. Basil, chervil, chives, fennel leaves and parsley all freeze well. Wash and finely chop. Cram into ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze. Once frozen, remove from trays and store in labelled plastic bags in the freezer. Add to dishes at the end of cooking to get best flavour.
