Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Hello and welcome to the February edition of Amber Valley Voice and what an eventful February it has been so far!! The first snowfall of 2012 and our first sight of disruptive snow since the end of 2010.

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine
We have Valentines day to look forward to and my most favourite day of the year…..Shrove Tuesday (21st Feb this year...already marked on the calendar!). To conclude the month...we have a leap year, so a whole extra day in Feb, which is traditionally marked by females making marriage proposals and of course, we have half term. So, for a short month it is jam packed!! We have lots of local charities hosting events and fundraisers this year and lots of events for half term, so check out pages 6 & 7 for more information. There is a ’snowdrop tea’ at Ironville church and a table top sale at Swanwick Methodist church on pages 24 and 13. You could also rent out Ironville Church Hall if you wanted to host your own party at a very reasonable rate, see page 14. Finally, remember to keep the updates and reader recommends coming to keep this magazine truly local. Happy Reading!

Swanwick & Somercotes Safer Neighbourhood update
9
Every community across Derbyshire has a dedicated Safer Neighbourhood team, working in partnership with local agencies to address your concerns. PCSO Chris Bannister, PCSO Mark Rogers and PC Mark Stokoe (picture left to right) recently met with the residents at a Neighbourhood Panel meeting to discuss any issues that the community may have about policing in the two villages. The priorities that were set are included below.
The current priorities for Swanwick & Somercotes are: • Parking on the solid white line on Main Road, Leabrooks. • Road safety for young people, particularly those using scooters. • Littering on Somercotes Hill, Somercotes and Derby Road, Swanwick at the bus stops. The next Neighbourhood Panel meeting will be held on Thursday 8th March at 6pm, at Somerlea Centre, Somercotes.
The team would like to remind you that you are the eyes and ears of your community. Please pass on any information about crime in your area. If you see anything suspicious record relevant details, including vehicle/person descriptions and forward to the police.
For further information on Safer Neighbourhood policing in Swanwick & Somercotes e-mail alfreton.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk visit www.derbyshire police.uk or call the new non-emergency number 101.

Book Review Snowdrops by A.D. Miller
Once you’ve read Snowdrops by A. D. Miller you’ll never think of these little harbingers of Spring in quite the same way again. The word snowdrop is also Moscow slang for bodies which lie hidden by winter snow and only emerge in the thaw. This second de$inition lies quietly at the heart of this slowly evolving vortex of a novel. Russia has always seemed very different to the West, and the dark side of modern Moscow is depicted as a mix of sleazy glamour, decadence and moral decay with huge gulfs between rich and poor, and humanity and cynicism. Nick is a British lawyer working on maybeshady oil deals worth billions. The corruption he meets on a daily basis is already starting to get its hold on him when he’s seduced by Masha who he’s met apparently by chance on a Metro station. The slow slide into corruption and our capacity for self delusion so we can carry on having what we want is what this book is really about. But it’s fantastically evocative of sweltering summers and sadistically cold winters and of thinking you’re in love. Snowdrops could probably be best described as a psychological drama, although it has elements of a thriller. It’s sophisticated and disturbingly seductive and was shortlisted for last year’s Man Booker prize. It is A.D. Miller’s $irst novel – from 2004 to 2007 he was Moscow correspondent for the Economist and travelled widely across for former Soviet Union. That insider understanding gives this book an extra punch.

16 Here is the second instalment of our favourite dog walks in the local area. This walk starts off on the same route as the previous walk but instead takes you off towards the Codnor Park Reservoir, which can be so beautiful in the icy weather! The walk follows along the canal path before taking you back through the wooded area by Swanwick Junction. I hope you enjoy this walk and please remember if you have a local walk you would like to share please let us know by email at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638 Circular walk from Riddings Park, via Codnor Park Reservoir (Approx. 4 miles) This is a good walk to take with your dogs as it offers a range of scenery and lead and nonlead walking. The route is around 4 miles long, taking approx. 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It is fairly flat with some small uphill sections and the terrain is mixed with some sections which can be fairly muddy if it has been wet, so it is perfect if it is dry or icy cold!
The walk begins in Riddings Park. If you cannot walk their easily then there is parking by the community centre entrance on West Street and at the end of Shaw Street both of which are off or near Greenhill Lane. In Riddings Park head towards the bottom field which can be reached by a stile in the far corner of the cricket pitch or through an entrance in the fence located off the path in the wooded area. Using any of the paths, walk down to the bottom right hand corner of this field where there is a gate in the black metal fence. Go through the gate and head right along the footpath Carry on along the footpath as it becomes a road with a wall on the left (Park Mews). At the end of the road turn left onto Church Street Walk on past the Seven Stars and Moulders Arms public houses before taking the first left onto Spring Road and then the first right onto Nottingham Lane. Carry on down Nottingham Lane all the way to the end. You will pass under a bridge as the road bends to the right before it meets Victoria Street. Turn right onto Victoria Street, cross the road and heading into Ironville. Walk along Victoria Street until you get to Ironville Church., the road bends round to the right. Take a left here onto Casson Street keeping the school on your left, then take the next left onto Cinder Bank. Cross the road and carry on along Cinder Bank until the trees end, just before the bridge over the canal. On your right will be a street called Market Place and just next to this there is a stile in the wooden fence which you should pass through. This will take you down onto the canal path. Follow the canal path towards Codnor Park Reservoir. You will pass a stone bridge just before you reach the canal. Cross the metal footbridge which will take you over the canal where it joins the reservoir. Carry on ahead through the car park, keeping the reservoir on your right and take the path that follows the reservoir. Cross another metal footbridge and turn left following the canal path.

The canal path will pass some houses on the right and under a metal footbridge before you reach the end. Pass through a metal gate and up a small bank onto Newlands Road. Turn left on Newlands Road. Cross the road when safe and carry on up to just before the road crosses the railway. Take a wide grass path on your left opposite a ‘Golden Valley’ sign. Follow this path until you get to the natural burial ground. Pass through the burial ground keeping to the right. Near the Black metal bridge there is a gap in the fence where you can enter the woods. Pass through here, down some steps and turn left onto the woodland path. Shortly you will come to a fallen tree, turn immediately right here and then immediately right again onto the main woodland path. Follow this path, which can be fairly muddy for a short while, it will follow the railway on your right. Pass through a clearing and over a wooden bridge. Bear to the right, through a stile in the fence and turn right onto a path that will take you under a rail bridge and onto Slack Lane. Turn left on Slack Lane and walk under another rail bridge. Follow the path. On your left you will be able to get a nice view of Swanwick Junction Railway Station. Carry on along this path up the hill towards the White House on the Left. At the top of the hill turn right following the track with the hedge on your left hand side. Carry on through two metal gates until you reach the end of the fields where there is a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and carry on turning right onto peak avenue. Walk on until the road bends to the left. Take a right here and take the path onto Green hill Lane. Cross the road and take the second right onto Shaw street, which will bring you back to Riddings Park.

NEED A FAMILY LAWYER? CHOOSE ONE THAT FITS AND SUITS YOU!
23
If you have relationship problems, are fearful, insecure or stressed who do you turn to for advice and reassurance? At Ellis-Fermor & Negus we take a client centred approach to our work with you. It is important to us that you feel in control of your own situation, that you feel heard and understood and that you are able to communicate easily with us. With that in mind, our Family Department offers Specialist Lawyers skilled in a range of skills through which we offer a variety of services to help you to resolve your family issues. “One size does not :it all” and so, together we are able to choose a route tailored to suit your particular circumstances and needs, and what can be afforded. Most clients prefer, whenever possible, to settle matters without the worry, uncertainty and expense of court proceedings. We therefore offer a ‘Collaborative Service’ where we will meet with you and your partner and their lawyer to discuss issues in a spirit of compromise in round table meetings. Underpinning the process is a mutual agreement not to issue court proceedings during the process. Once the process has concluded orders are often applied for by consent to legally record the agreement. DVD Review - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (12)
26
The concluding part of the Harry Potter story has :inally made it to DVD and if you haven’t seen it yet, come out from the cave you have been living in and get yourself ready for an epic conclusion worthy of the series to date. The story picks up where part 1 left off with Harry on the hunt for Voldermorts Horcruxes which he must destroy to stop the evil lord. So much is crammed into the next 2 hours 10 minutes that it would be impossible to try and talk about the plot but suf:ice to say there are twists and turns along the way with the body count of key characters mounting as it builds towards a spectacular :inale. Devotees of the book will notice some deviations from the text but this is done with such skill and :inesse that it does not undermine the story signi:icantly. As someone who struggled through the :irst couple of :ilms I have grown to enjoy this series as the characters have grown up and it became darker and more serious. In particular this :ilm did not disappoint me and by the end I only felt a sense of loss that there would be no more.

Gardeners Calendar - February
29
February can be a bit of a waiting game in the garden; but there’s still things you can do. If you haven’t already pruned raspberry canes, cut them back to 6” Summer lowering clematis should be pruned on last year’s growth to knee height, cutting just above a bud, mulch and feed. If you forgot to prepare sweet pea trenches in Autumn, you can do so now. Incorporate compost or manure into the soil ready for sowing at the end of the month.
Top Tip Good time for planting bare root new roses – but avoid ground where they’ve grown before.

Are you a Hero?
Calling all Heroes in Amber Valley
Mencap are hoping to :ind 30 heroes in Amber Valley to sign up to do a tandem skydive in September 2012 at Langar Air:ield in Nottingham. Marie at Mencap says “ I always resisted the temptation as I was scared stiff but I eventually did it for my 40th birthday and was the 200th person that they have thrown out of a plane so far. I have to tell you that it was the most exhilarating, fantastic, amazing thing I have ever done and I would thoroughly recommend that everyone tries it at least once in their lifetime.” The money we raise at this jump in September will be directly supporting people with a learning disability locally and my team are here to help you every step of the way. We’ll be there on the day to hold your handbag or keep the rest of the family busy, so become a hero….sign up today and :ind out more.
